Live updates: Student says SouthTech teacher sexually abused her 'almost every single day'

WEST PALM BEACH — Prosecutors have begun presenting their case against a former SouthTech Academy teacher accused of sexually abusing his student and letting her buy a rope to hang herself.

This week's trial follows rejected plea deals for 10- and 25-year prison sentences — fractions of the penalty Damian Conti will face if jurors convict him as charged. Prosecutors amended the charges twice before landing on the five Conti faces today: four counts of unlawful sex between a student and teacher, and one of attempted assisted suicide.

Conti, 37, is accused of grooming the student during the 2023-24 school year. Lawyers for the teen's family say Conti offered to serve as her mentor, communicating first with her over school email, then text and Instagram in August 2023.

Investigators believe he began sexually assaulting the girl — identified in court only by her initials — in his classroom, a storage closet and off-campus parking lots the following month.

Wisconsin man accused of producing child sex abuse material involving toddler

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - A federal indictment was returned against a 29-year-old Shawano man on Tuesday, accused of creating child sex abuse material.

Brandon M. Boogren is accused of creating several videos of himself and a then-two-year-old child involved in sexually explicit conduct. According to federal authorities, Boogren then is alleged to have given the images to a person in Houston, Texas, via the internet.

According to the Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, Boogren faces a mandatory 15 years’ imprisonment and up to 30 years’ imprisonment if he is convicted of the charge. He may also be fined up to $250,000 and would be required to register as a sexual offender under state and federal law.

This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation with the assistance of the Shawano Police Department. It will be prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Daniel R. Humble.

NJ elementary teacher accused of sexually abusing student, having his child when he was 13

A New Jersey elementary school teacher was indicted for allegedly abusing a student over the course of several years, while it is also being reported that she gave birth to the boy’s child.

Laura Caron, 34, a former fifth-grade teacher at Middle Township Elementary School, is accused of engaging in an inappropriate sexual relationship with the student who had been residing in her home, the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office said. 

The abuse allegedly started when the boy was 11 in 2016 and carried on for four years until 2020 when he was 15. During this time period, prosecutors said, Caron was employed as a fifth-grade teacher at the Middle Township Elementary School.

Police began their investigation last year after receiving a tip that the victim’s father had made a post on Facebook claiming that Caron’s 5-year-old child looked like his son, Fox 29 reported, citing court documents. 

The outlet reported that Caron had taught the victim and at least one of his siblings. The boy’s family later became friends with Caron and at some point, the victim and his siblings began staying with Caron once or twice a week, before they began living with Caron permanently from 2016 to 2020, the outlet reported. 

Court documents also allege that the victim confirmed to police that he was in a sexual relationship with Caron and that he was the father of her young child. The child was born when the victim was 13 years old. 

A friend of Caron’s told the New York Post that the accused threw a baby shower for the child and told friends that the father was "out of the picture."

Caron was arrested in January, with the grand jury's indictment coming down last week. She is now charged with aggravated sexual assault, which carries a penalty of 10 to 20 years in prison, in addition to sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child, which each carry potential penalties of five to 10 years, Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland announced. 

The prosecutor’s office did not mention anything about the child in its press releases.

"These allegations are deeply disturbing, particularly given the position of trust the defendant held in relation to the victim," Sutherland said.

An Ohio school administrator, who was married with children, was sentenced to three years in prison on Tuesday for having sex with a teen student in her office.

Emily Nutley, a 43-year-old former counselor who worked with at-risk students at St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati, pleaded guilty to sexual battery in April, and must also now register as a Tier 3 sex offender every 90 days during her life, WLWT's Karin Johnson reports.

Although Ohio law does not mandate a prison term for such a crime, the victim's family called for the maximum possible sentence. Ohio asked for a five-year sentence, while the defense asked for probation.

A sentencing memorandum obtained by the Cincinnati Enquirer said text messages showed Nutley initiated the sexual relationship with the male student in late 2023. Nutley had texted the student, who was 17 at the time, sent nude photos of herself to him and had at least four sexual encounters with him.

When the teen tried to end things with Nutley, who was 42 at the time, the documents state that "she threatened to kill herself" and paid him to keep quiet about the relationship.

The student told his parents about the situation on Oct. 7, 2024, and met with school administrators the following day, the newspaper reported. On Oct. 11, 2024, the school fired Nutley after an internal investigation.

In the memorandum, prosecutors likened Nutley to "most pedophiles," saying that she "preyed on the most defenseless person she could find.

Nutley’s attorney, Joe Suhre, filed a separate sentencing memorandum, describing her as a "broken woman" who suffered from mental illness and alcohol abuse and was a survivor of sexual abuse.

Suhre said that when the sexual encounters with the student began, Nutley was depressed over the death of her brother and the dissolution of her marriage. He said a psychologist treating her found her behavior to be tied to "unresolved trauma."

Prosecutors wrote that the student "will pay the price for the rest of his life" over Nutley’s actions.

Since her conviction in April, Nutley has been in a treatment program for those convicted of sex crimes, Suhre said.
