Police continue investigation into the distribution of child sexual abuse materials by volleyball coach
Investigators believe there may be additional complainants
The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) believes there may be other complainants following a 2025 investigation in relation to the distribution of child sexual abuse and exploitation material.
On May 23, 2025, Steven Cabral, 33, was arrested and charged with transmitting child sexual abuse and exploitation material, possessing child sexual abuse and exploitation material, and accessing child sexual abuse and exploitation material.
On June 15, 2026, Cabral pled guilty to possessing child sexual abuse and exploitation material. A sentence hearing has been scheduled for October 2026. Cabral remains on release and is bound by several conditions including that he has no contact with anyone 16 years of age and younger.

The EPS continued their investigation and identified new information indicating additional individuals may have been victimized by Cabral, who coached and refereed youth volleyball teams in Edmonton involving players between the ages of 12 to 17.
“Following the court’s decision to release the accused after charges were initially laid, police continued their investigation and learned about new information that suggests that there may be additional complainants,” says Sgt. Maciej Rocki with the EPS’ Northwest Patrol. “We know that conversations with children are hard for family and friends to have when these matters arise, but we want to ensure that we are able to provide support and a safe environment for anyone who may have information to come forward and speak with police.”

Male Arrested Following Child Luring and Sexual Exploitation Investigation in Whitby
A male is facing several charges following a child luring and child sexual abuse and exploitation material investigation in Whitby.
In late 2025, investigators with the Internet Child Exploitation Unit began an investigation into a male alleged to have lured a 12-year-old and 13-year-old female through Reddit and Snapchat into sending sexual abuse and exploitation materials. The suspect operated under the usernames DeliveryNormal7189 on Reddit and manu041.01 on Snapchat.
In 2026, investigators with the Internet Child Exploitation Unit executed a search warrant at the suspect’s residence in Whitby. Several electronic devices were located and seized. The suspect was located in the residence and taken into custody without incident.
The suspect is an employee at Durham College, and police have concerns there may be further victims. A photo of the accused is attached and can be viewed at www.drps.ca
Manu SUGUNAKUMAR, age 23 from Whitby is charged with: Luring Person Under 16 to Facilitate Sexual Assault x2, Luring Person Under 16 to Facilitate Sexual Interference x2, Luring Person Under 18 to Facilitate Making Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation Material x3, Make Sexually Explicit Material Available to Peron Under 18 for the Purpose of Facilitating Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation Material, Luring Person Under 16 to Facilitate Invitation to Sexual Touching, and Publish Intimate Image Without Consent.
He was held for a bail hearing.

WHITCHURCH-STOUFFVILLE MAN FACING HUMAN TRAFFICKING
AND CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE AND EXPLOITATION MATERIAL CHARGES
Investigators with the York Regional Police (YRP) Counter Exploitation Unit have charged a Whitchurch-Stouffville man with human trafficking and child sexual abuse and exploitation material offences in an on-going investigation.
On April 1, 2026, the Peterborough Police Service began an investigation into a missing female youth from their area. The youth had been seen getting into a grey sedan.
Soon after the vehicle was identified, YRP investigators were contacted to assist in locating the vehicle as it was believed to be in the Whitchurch-Stouffville area.
On April 2, 2026, the vehicle was located at a residence in Whitchurch-Stouffville. Concerned for the youth’s well-being, investigators entered the residence under exigent circumstances.
The youth was safely located and a 47-year-old man was charged.
Search warrants were executed at two residences associated to the man following his arrest.
Investigators are releasing his photo as they believe there are more victims. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact police.

18-year-old charged with possession of child sexual abuse material in Inuvik
Several devices seized for ongoing investigation
Inuvik RCMP say they have charged an 18-year-old with possession and distribution of child sexual abuse and exploitation material.
The man was arrested on June 23, 2026 following an investigation that began in June 2025, according to a release from RCMP Tuesday.
Several devices were seized for forensic examination during the arrest and the case remains under investigation by the Internet Child Exploitation unit.
“At present time, there is no indication that any children in the region have been victims of abuse related to this case.”
The man is released on several conditions, including no contact without anyone under the age of 16 and to avoid public spaces where people under 16 may be present.
He is set to appear in court in Inuvik on July 21.
