Creepy Oregon dad’s bizarre excuse for drugging
12-year-old girls’ smoothies at sleepover
The Oregon father who drugged his 12-year-old daughter’s friends at a sleepover has been sentenced to two years in prison — and claims he only put sedatives in the girls’ drinks because he wanted them to get a good night’s sleep.
Michael Meyden was sentenced Monday after pleading guilty to putting drugs in fruit smoothies he then served the young girls who were staying at his Lake Oswego home in August 2023.
Meyden, 57, apologized for his actions in court while claiming his actions were because he “just wanted them to go to bed” after they stayed up past 11 p.m. against his wishes, the Oregonian reported.
“I was overly fixated on them going to bed, yes, that is true,” he said, adding he wanted them to sleep so they could be well rested the next day.
“My whole life is destroyed,” Meyden said. “Everything that was important to me up until that point is gone.”
Meyden’s wife divorced him shortly after accusations were leveled against him and she retained custody of their two children.
In May, he attempted suicide, and the former family home where the incident occurred has been sold.
“I am hearing you express shame and remorse and I think those are authentic,” Judge Ann Lininger told Meyden on Monday.
“I think you have created a lot of pain and you rightly note that your own family is suffering a lot.”
Meyden dosed the girls’ mango smoothies with the prescription nervous system depressant benzodiazepine and insisted they drink them that August night — and was only caught after one of the girls failed to fall asleep but knew something had been done to her.
“Mom please pick me up and say I had a family emergency. I don’t feel safe. I might not respond but please come get me, Please. Please pick up. Please. PLEASE!!” that girl wrote in a desperate text to her mother around 1:45 a.m. that night.
Throughout the night, Meyden made trips to the basement where the girls were sleeping and checked if they were asleep, at one point putting his finger under a girl’s nose to check her breath and at another moving one around where she lay.
Thanks to the text, the girls were all rescued by their parents by around 3 a.m. that night, and were brought to the hospital, where they tested positive for drugs.
“You played Russian roulette with my child’s life,” one girl’s mother said at the sentencing. “She is barely 5 feet tall and on a good day 70 pounds soaking wet and you overdosed her.”
A few of the girls even testified, with one telling Meyden he’d made her life “a living hell” since that night.
“We were taught adults are people we can trust, people we can go to when we need help or when we are scared,” the girl said.
“Yet adults are not people I can simply trust anymore. They are people who scare me and make me think twice: What if they were to hurt me the same way as Mr. Meyden?”
Meyden pleaded guilty to three felony counts of causing another person to ingest a controlled substance.
*Only Meyden knows if he's telling the whole truth here, but I have to wonder why his wife took his kids and left right after he was accused. I also wonder why he kept going downstairs while the girls were sleeping, or nearly so. Was he afraid he might have killed them? Was he up to something more nefarious? He knows; God knows; Judgment is coming.
