A South Texas priest is behind bars after he was arrested on multiple sex trafficking and child sex-related charges. The 52-year-old priest was serving at St. Luke's Catholic Church in Brownsville, according to the Cameron County District Attorney.

Fernando Gonzalez Ortega is facing charges of sexual performance by a child, sexual assault of a child, continuous sexual abuse of a child, trafficking of a person, and continuous trafficking of persons, according to a news release sent to MySA from the Brownsville Police Department.

He was taken into custody on Monday, February 12, in the 1900 block of Barnard Road. He has since been arraigned at the Brownsville City Jail and his bond was set at $800,000.

As part of his bond conditions, he must install an ankle monitor before release, surrender his passport, and not leave Cameron County while the cases are pending, according to a statement from the DA released to Valley Central.

The Catholic Diocese of Brownsville has released a statement on the arrest and has removed Gonzalez Ortega from active ministry and prohibited him from “exercising any priestly ministry anywhere.

In the statement, Bishop Daniel E. Flores said the diocese received the allegation of sexual misconduct with a minor by Father Gonzalez from an individual who came forward, who is now an adult. Bishop Flores reported the allegation to police after speaking with the Diocesan Victim’s Assistance Coordinator.

"I am deeply saddened and ask you to join me as I pray for the individual who came forward and the family, and all the parties affected, including parishioners, and the clergy across our diocese who tend to their faithful with fidelity and compassion," Bishop Daniel E. Flores said.
