Child Sex Abuse in Australia, and Everywhere else > Signs of Grooming

Warning over common childhood games

amid hidden Aussie crisis

that's 'too uncomfortable to talk about'

Grooming can look like everyday acts of kindness and familiarity.

But even something as seemingly innocent as this can be a

vehicle for boundary-testing.

In Australia, a staggering 79 per cent of child sexual abuse (CSA) victims know their abuser, and an estimated one in four Australians have experienced abuse themselves. It’s a confronting reality — one that affects millions across the country — and yet still too often exists in silence.

Experts say breaking that silence is critical to removing the shame and stigma that continues to prevent so many survivors from coming forward.

Shelley is both a mother and a survivor of child sexual abuse. She understands firsthand the weight of carrying the burden and how difficult it can be to speak out. In an interview with Yahoo News Australia, she stressed that addressing the abuse means going right to the root of the problem.

"I’ve learned that prevention isn’t just about education or the occasional conversation. It’s about creating a way of life where children know they are safe, heard, and believed — always," she said.

"We can’t control what others do, but we can control how we show up for our children. That means raising them in an environment where trust is built every day, where body autonomy is respected from the start, and where no topic is too uncomfortable to speak about."

What are some of the subtle signs of child grooming?

Shelley said that also includes the hard work parents and caregivers must do on themselves —acknowledging personal wounds, challenging harmful beliefs, and letting go of the idea that "it won’t happen to us." In many cases, she pointed out, abuse doesn’t come from strangers — it happens within families, social circles and communities. In some cases, the harm even comes from other children who have been victims themselves.

Leading child protection organisation Bravehearts is calling for greater national awareness around this issue with the launch of its new campaign, "Grooming Hides Behind Harmless". The campaign shines a light on the often-subtle behaviours predators use to groom children and the adults around them, gradually building trust to lower suspicion and gain access.

Bravehearts CEO Alison Geale explained that grooming can look like everyday acts of kindness and familiarity. But even something as seemingly innocent as children’s games can be a vehicle for boundary-testing. She said games like hide and seek, tag, doctors and nurses, mums and dads or play fighting can, in some instances, be used as a cover to push physical boundaries under the guise of play.

While those games are a normal part of childhood, she emphasised the importance of being alert to patterns, like an adult or older child frequently initiating one-on-one play in private settings, encouraging secrets, or dismissing a child’s discomfort. When a child is repeatedly isolated from others under the pretext of fun or special attention, it could be a red flag.

"It’s important to understand that grooming takes time and involves the grooming of not only the child but also those adults around the child," Alison said. "Gaining the trust of parents or even organisations is a critical component of gaining access to the child.

"The grooming process can take time, sometimes years, as the offender builds trust. When treating a single behaviour in isolation, protective adults can view that as harmless, joining the dots can be tricky."

The campaign urges all adults — parents, carers, teachers, coaches, neighbours — to recognise that awareness is a vital tool in prevention. By learning to spot manipulative behaviour early, people are better equipped to protect their kids.

"Learn as much as you can about the signs," Alison said. "Child sex offenders are cunning and manipulative, often gaslighting parents, caregivers and other adults, leading them to believe that any suspicions they have are unfounded."

Despite the 2017 Royal Commission recommendations, significant action is still lacking, particularly around unified national measures, Alison warned. She said there's still an ongoing need for stronger collaboration between state and federal governments on key issues like reporting, education, sentencing, and implementing a national Working with Children Check. While the National Strategy is making progress, crucial areas of prevention and treatment still require urgent attention.

"A quarter of Australians have experienced child sexual abuse, and this is a conservative statistic," she said. "Parents and caregivers need to recognise this alarming fact, become knowledgeable about the facts and feel confident to be vigilant about the adults their children spend unsupervised time with."

If you believe a child is at immediate risk of harm, call triple zero without delay and report to police. For guidance or support, you can contact Bravehearts’ toll-free National Information and Support Line on 1800 272 831 (available Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 4:30pm AEST).

The Perverted Lives of the Rich and Famous > Bambaataa sexually abused and trafficked boy 12; Zion Williamson's violent rapes

Hip-hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa loses civil case suing him for child sexual abuse

The plaintiff, who alleged that Bambaataa sexually abused and trafficked him when he was 12, was granted a default judgment after the DJ failed to show up in court

Hip-hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa has lost a civil case suing him for child sexual abuse and trafficking after failing to show up in court.

In 2021, the anonymous plaintiff alleged that the DJ and producer sexually abused and trafficked him for four years, beginning in 1991, when he was 12 and Bambaataa 33 or 34 years old.

Bambaataa, born Lance Taylor, has never responded to these specific allegations, Rolling Stone reports. The Guardian has contacted representatives for Bambaataa for comment.

Judge Alexander M Tisch granted the plaintiff a default judgment “without opposition” in New York state’s supreme court.

Bambaataa has faced numerous allegations of molesting boys.

In 2016, the Democratic party activist and former music industry executive Ronald Savage alleged that Bambaataa had repeatedly abused him in 1980, when he was 15 and Bambaataa 23. In 2024 he recanted his allegations, saying that he met Bambaataa at a club he had used a fake ID to enter.

“Bambaataa is not a paedophile and, in my eyes, he was doing something that was consensual with someone that he thought was of age,” he told AllHipHop. “I wish, back in 2016, I remembered about the fake ID.”

At the time, the allegations prompted more alleged victims to come forward, with Rolling Stone reporting that 12 men in total – not including Savage – have accused Bambaataa of sexual impropriety.

A man claiming to be a former bodyguard for Bambaataa, Shamsideen Shariyf Ali Bey, said: “I’ve walked in on stuff where I say: ‘What the f*** is going on.’ He travels with late teens. Those are the ones he takes overseas with him. When I went with him on tour in the states, I would stay in one room and he would have boys in the room with him.”

The musician denied all allegations in a 2016 interview with Fox 5 News, but left his position as the head of his Universal Zulu Nation organisation: “I never abused nobody. You know, it just sounds crazy for people to say that, to hear: ‘You abused me.’ You know all my people back then, you know the hundreds of people that been around me. If something like that happened, why you never went to none of them?”

Alongside DJ Kool Herc, Bambaataa was one of the originators of hip-hop and began throwing block parties in the South Bronx in the 1970s.

Zion Williamson accused of rape in bombshell lawsuit

Pelicans star Zion Williamson is being accused of rape by a woman claiming to be his ex-girlfriend.

In a bombshell lawsuit filed Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court and obtained by The Post, the woman, identified as Jane Doe, alleges Williamson raped her twice in 2020.

In one instance, Doe claimed Williamson, 24, arrived to the Beverly Hills home he purportedly rented while training during COVID on Nov. 23, 2020 and demanded sex.

According to Doe, Williamson called her “stuck up” and a “bitch,” and when she refused to engage in sex, the 6-foot-6, 280-pound power forward “pinned Plaintiff down on the bed with her hands behind her back and raped her.”

Williamson is alleged to have taken her phone and choked her for “talking too much” afterward.

A second claim of rape occurred the following month, in which Doe spoke of potentially visiting a friend, leading Williamson to have allegedly “picked her up, threw her down to the ground, and pinned her shoulders down so she could not move,” and then he reputedly “violently raped Plaintiff in multiple ways.”

She says he then took her phone and computer so she could not “contact anyone to secure a ride elsewhere, report the assault, or seek medical care.”

In a statement provided to The Post, Williamson denied the allegations through his legal reps.

“We take these allegations with the utmost seriousness, and we unequivocally deny them,” his reps said. “The allegations contained in the complaint are categorically false and reckless. This is the plaintiff’s third set of attorneys. This appears to be an attempt to exploit a professional athlete driven by a financial motive rather than any legitimate grievance.”

Williamson acknowledged a consensual, casual relationship with Doe, and that she only began demanding “millions of dollars” after their time together ended.

He intends to file a counterclaim against Doe and will seek “significant damages for this defamatory lawsuit.”

“While these allegations are false, we recognize the seriousness of the claims and welcome the opportunity to prove the truth in court,” his reps said. “We are confident that the legal process will expose the truth and fully vindicate Mr. Williamson.”

Doe’s suit alleges a pattern of “abusive, controlling, and threatening behavior toward Plaintiff” that also occurred in Louisiana and several other states.

Williamson is also accused of threatening to have his security guard shoot Doe “in the head while the security guard was present and carrying a loaded firearm multiple times in Louisiana between 2020 and 2023,” and “threatening to have his paid security guard kill Plaintiff’s parents, after informing Plaintiff that he knows their home address multiple times in Louisiana between 2020 and 2023.”

“Our client is very adamant about this — it’s not her desire or our desire to litigate this case in the press,” Doe’s attorney, Sam Taylor with the Lanier Law Firm, told The Post on Friday. “It’s a very serious case, as reflected in the allegations. Our client looks forward to her day in court where she can go and explain to a jury what happened to her, the things she endured for this defendant and getting justice.”

Doe claims to have been in a “dating relationship” with Williamson beginning around 2018 while he was a freshman at Duke, and the relationship continued through June 2023.

Williamson went on to be the first overall pick by New Orleans in the 2019 NBA Draft.

Despite an injury-marred start to his career, he made the All-Rookie team in 2020 and has twice been an All-Star in five seasons, all with the Pelicans.

Williamson has made headlines over his personal life on a numerous occasions.

In April, Williamson was dragged into a home invasion incident involving the mother of his child, Ahkeema Love, 31, who was arrested for attacking a romantic rival.

Love was charged with home invasion, aggravated battery and stalking after she broke into an unidentified woman’s residence and “grabbed the victim’s hair and struck the victim with keys clenched in her fist,” Kenner police said in a probable cause affidavit, per NBC News.

Williamson was not named in the affidavit.

Love was served an order of protection as part of her custody release following a bond hearing, according to court records.

In 2023, adult film star Moriah Mills claimed she had an intimate relationship with the former No. 1 overall pick, and threatened to release alleged sex tapes of the two.

In March, Love revealed she is pregnant and celebrating “another addition to our family” in an Instagram post.

She did not name the child’s father.

Love and Williamson welcomed a daughter in 2023.

Lovely family.
