Former Colorado sheriff’s deputy arrested in Mexico on suspicion of child sex exploitation
A former San Miguel County sheriff’s deputy who fled the country after state investigators searched his home, was arrested in Mexico on suspicion of dozens of counts of child sex exploitation and failing to report child abuse.
Jesus Damian Nieblas, 28, is accused of having 27 videos showing child sex abuse, according to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
Agents searched Nieblas’ home and vehicle in Norwood on July 10, about the same time he fled the country, the sheriff’s office said Friday.
He was arrested by Mexican law enforcement in Agua Prieta, which is adjacent to Douglas, Ariz., and was transferred to the U.S. Marshals Service at the border.
Court records show Nieblas was arrested Monday. He faces 28 counts of sexual exploitation of a child, all felonies, and 27 counts of failing to report child abuse or neglect, all misdemeanors.
Nieblas resigned from the San Miguel County Sheriff’s Office on June 25, before the CBI started investigating him, state officials said.
He is in custody at the Cochise County Jail in Bisbee, Ariz., on $100,000 bail. His next court date was not available Friday.
