A nurse at a hospital in Egypt's Dakahlia Governorate handed over the newborn in exchange for a flat and a sum of money.

Dubai: What should have been the happiest chapter of a young Egyptian woman's life instead uncovered an alleged human trafficking case dating back nearly two decades, after her family unexpectedly refused to allow her to marry.

The woman, identified only as Nour, had accepted a marriage proposal when the family that raised her reportedly rejected the match without explanation, despite there being no apparent objections to the groom.

The refusal prompted a relative to intervene, revealing a secret that would upend Nour's life. According to her account, the relative told her that the people she had believed were her parents were not her biological family.

Shocked by the revelation, Nour confronted the woman she had known as her mother. After initially denying the claim, the woman allegedly admitted that she had acquired the infant through an illegal arrangement in 2006 after struggling with infertility.

According to the alleged confession, a nurse at a hospital in Egypt's Dakahlia Governorate handed over the newborn in exchange for a flat and a sum of money. The child was then allegedly registered under the name of the woman's husband using forged records.

Determined to uncover her origins, Nour launched her own search and eventually located the nurse said to have been involved in the transaction.

She said the nurse admitted details of the alleged deal during a confrontation. However, before revealing the identity of Nour's biological family, the nurse reportedly fled the country, cutting off what Nour described as her only remaining lead.

Now abandoned by the family that raised her, Nour said she is supported only by her husband as she continues her search for her biological parents.

"I don't want money or an inheritance," she said in an emotional appeal that has circulated widely on social media. "All I want is to hug my real mother, know my roots, and find out whether my family has been looking for me."

Attorney general invests $400,000 to support victims of sex trafficking and child abuse in York Region

Ontario Attorney General Doug Downey has announced up to $400,000 to help young survivors of sex trafficking and child abuse in York Region.

He was at the Region of York’s headquarters in Newmarket June 19 to award as much as $200,000 each to BridgeNorth and the Cedar Centre.

“The work that both BridgeNorth and the Cedar Centre are doing is really remarkable,” he said.

Proceeds of crime fund 

The funding comes from the 2026-2028 Civil Remedies Grant, funded by the proceeds of crime.

“One basic point is that crime should not pay and we’re making sure it does not,” said Downey, adding the government is allocating $5 million through the fund to help 27 law enforcement agencies and community and Indigenous organizations fight crime and strengthen public safety across the province.

BridgeNorth is a survivor-led organization committed to ending sexual exploitation in Canada.

‘Sex trafficking happening in York Region’

“BridgeNorth exists because, sadly, sex trafficking is happening right here in York Region,” executive director Karen Todd, said.

“We help youth experience freedom from sex trafficking through advocacy, education and awareness and direct services … Youth often don’t recognize that what they’re experiencing is exploitation and don’t always identify themselves as victims.”

The Cedar Centre provides trauma-specific therapy to youngsters and youth who have experienced childhood violence, as well as adults who experienced violence as children.

The funding for BridgeNorth will expand the organization’s LifeEdge Intervention Program, which provides services to youth aged 12 to 19 who have experienced sex trafficking or sexual exploitation.

The funding will allow BridgeNorth to serve four to six youths, depending on how long it takes each of them to achieve their specific goals, Todd said.

The funding for the Cedar Centre will support staffing as the organization works to develop York Region’s first child and youth advocacy centre.

Future centre will help child abuse victims 

Once built, the centre will bring multidisciplinary teams under one roof to reduce the trauma abused children and youth and their non-offending guardians now endure having to retell their experiences to different professionals in various locations.

Cradling a bravery bear, given by the Cedar Centre to young abuse and violence victims, which she later gave to Downey, Cedar Centre executive director Alison Peck called the funding a transformative moment for the organization.

As the first program of its kind in York Region, Cedar Centre’s Child/Youth Advocacy Program will ensure that children and youth who are victims of crime receive the specialized support they deserve, she said.

“Our child/youth advocate program is the first pillar of York Region’s emerging child/youth advocacy centre, Project Hope. And it represents our first brave step together,” Peck said.

“In York Region, on the days when children and youth face their most challenging moments, this is about them being brave. This is about us being brave with them. And this is about you (Downey) being brave enough to believe in all of us. So, this bear is for you.”

BridgeNorth and the Cedar Centre support some of the most vulnerable members of the community, Newmarket-Aurora MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy said.

“The work that they do is not always easy at all. It required patience, it requires expertise. It requires great compassion and an unwavering commitment to helping children, youth and families through some of the most difficult challenges in their lives,” she said.

The funding will help ensure that children, youth and families affected by violence, exploitation, and trauma have access to the specialized care and support they need close to home, Gallagher Murphy said.

“Every young person deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential,” she said.

The government is investing in services that not only help survivors heal but also strengthen community safety across York Region, she added.

Three girls were rescued by police in Lethbridge from a forced confinement situation in which one of the girls was allegedly drugged and pimped out to several men over multiple days.

The Lethbridge Police Service said on Tuesday it has charged a man with unlawful confinement, sexual exploitation and human trafficking in connection with multiple incidents where vulnerable girls were targeted and sexually assaulted.

It stems from a call police received last month in the southern Alberta city.

On Dec. 19, 2025, police said officers responded to a report that a 14-year-old girl was being held in an apartment along the 500 block of 8 Street South.

Police said a man answered the door and the girl was located inside in medical distress. She was taken to hospital and the man arrested.

Police began searching the apartment and two other girls, aged 15 and 16, were found inside it.

The 14-year-old girl told police she had been forcibly confined and repeatedly sexually assaulted by both the man who was arrested and other men over a three-day period. During the raping, police said the girl was also forced to consume drugs.

The 15-year-old and 16-year-old were also forced to stay in the apartment for several hours, during which time the man exposed himself.

Skye Atoa, 50, of Lethbridge, is charged with trafficking of a person under 18, sexual assault of a child under 16, sexual interference, obtaining sexual services of a child for consideration, indecent exposure to a child under 16, sexual counsel of a child and three counts of unlawful confinement.

Based on the investigation and evidence to date, Lethbridge police believe there may be additional, unidentified victims.

Because of that, police released Atoa’s photograph in an effort to encourage other possible victims, who may not know the accused by name or may only know him by an alias, to come forward.

“Anytime we have these types of incidents it’s incredibly concerning, especially when they involve our vulnerable population, and we want to keep everyone in our city safe,” said Lethbridge police Staff Sgt. Ashlin Snowdon.

In addition, Atoa is also charged in connection with a previous sexual assault in October 2025, where a 24-year-old woman police described as “vulnerable” was sexually assaulted at his place.

“The assault in October, we were actively investigating, and that investigation did take some time,” Snowdon said. “So while the accused was in custody, we’ve been in a position to lay additional charges in relation to that investigation.”

In that case, Atoa is charged with sexual assault and obtaining for consideration sexual services/communicating for the purpose of sexual services.

Atoa, who police said has been in custody since his arrest in mid-December, was granted bail following a court hearing on Monday. He is anticipated to be released from custody Tuesday on several conditions.

“Some of them includes not having any contact with the victims and witnesses and then not having communication or contact with persons under 18 years old,” Snowdon said.

Atoa’s next court appearance is Feb. 2.

This is not so far-fetched as it might seem to most Russophobes. Some years ago, Putin enacted laws stopping the adoption of Russian children by foreigners. The laws were enacted partly because of stories of horrid abuse of such children. Some of those stories possibly came from this blog.

The brutal treatment of the Russian-speaking people of Donbass before the war started made it easy for Putin to imagine the wholesale kidnapping and selling of these kids during the war.
