Accounts of Hamas guards raping hostages featured in documentary

In a new documentary about sexual crimes committed by Hamas, released hostage Agam Goldstein-Almog (17) gave a harrowing account of a fellow captive who was raped at gunpoint by a Hamas guard.

In the documentary “Screams Before Silence” former Meta COO and author Sheryl Sandberg interviews Agam Goldstein-Almog who describes one of many instances of sexual violence suffered by captives in Gaza, both female and male.

Goldstein-Almog describes sitting in her cell with a young female hostage and asking her what she had been through.

“She started crying, and I cried with her,” she said.

The other hostage told Agam what she had been through before she was moved the night before.

Although hostages aren’t usually held by themselves, the young woman was alone with a guard, and he told her to wash herself in the sink.

As she did so, he came up to her and put a gun to her head.

“He started kissing her, and she started crying,” Goldstein-Almog described. “Then he took off all her clothes and touched her all over her body.”

The hostage then said the Hamas guard assaulted her for half an hour while she was crying.

“I asked her, ‘Did you do what he told you?’ and she said, ‘Of course. I didn’t have the option not to,’” Goldstein-Almog recounted.

The next day the hostage was taken to another location and the guard warned her not to tell anyone what had happened.

This leaves one with the  impression that the raping of hostages is not systemic, but occurs when a guard might be able to isolate a girl/woman from other prisoners and guards. Or, am I being too kind here?

Goldstein-Almog said that most of the hostages had stories about sexual or physical abuse at the hands of the Hamas guards.

Her testimony is only one of many accounts given by freed hostages, first responders and survivors featured in Sandberg’s “Screams Before Silence” documentary that will be released in April.

When asked what prompted her to make the documentary, Sandberg said, “When this happened on October 7 and evidence started coming out about the sexual violence, rape and genital mutilation, the silence was really deafening.”

“People are denying it particularly because of the polarization around the October 7 attack,” she added. “So this documentary is giving people the opportunity to bear witness, to hear it firsthand from people who were there, saw things, heard things, and first responders who saw the bodies,” she continued.

Sandberg said the documentary tells “the story of how these women, and some men, spent the last moments of their lives” and will be an important tool in holding those responsible accountable for their crimes.

Teacher, 40, and his former student girlfriend, 22, accused of sex with two younger girls

A high school teacher has been arrested for allegedly engaging in sexual relationships with two former students. 

Gary Bettencourt, 40, of Turlock, California is accused of having a relationship with one victim, 17, from early 2015 until she graduated last June at Pacheco High and another student over the course of two years when he worked at Los Banos High ten years ago.

The most recent victim has also accused Bettencourt's girlfriend, 22-year-old Devyn Egan, of molesting her as well. Egan was formerly a student of Bettencourt's in high school.

Prosecutors filed charges against the couple on Monday according to ABC, and believe that there could possibly be more victims.

'Throughout the investigation, we received several pieces of evidence which included social media. We recovered information from computers so we were able to tie some information to our second victim,' said Los Banos Police Chief Ray Reyna.

'Their charges involve unlawful sexual acts with a minor, lewd contact, and several other charges related to that type of conduct.'

Reyna later added; 'We believe there are more victims, and the detectives are working to identify them through the social media communications.'

Drugs and alcohol also played a part in these relationships according to the Merced Sun-Star. 

Dr. Steve Tietjen, the superintendent for Los Banos High where Bettencourt worked from 2002 to 2010, said; 'It's very disturbing. You hope that it never happens during your career, and when it does, it's like a punch in the stomach and it's a betrayal of the profession.'

Bettencourt, who had been on unpaid leave since September when these accusations first became public, is now on unpaid leave and being held with Egan at Merced County jail.

Telford guard quits job amid child sex abuse investigation

Allegations of child sexual abuse led a Bowie County man to quit his job as a correctional officer with the Barry Telford Unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice last month.

Michael Avis, 31, resigned his position mid-January. He is currently being held in the Bowie County jail following an arrest for indecency with a child by contact, court records show. Bail is set at $100,000.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Avis was babysitting a 5-year-old girl on Christmas Eve while her mother was out shopping. The girl told her mother of the alleged abuse days later and allegedly told staff at the Children’s Advocacy Center in Texarkana that it wasn’t the first time Avis touched her inappropriately on top of her clothing.

If convicted of indecency with a child by sexual contact, Avis faces two to 20 years in prison and a fine up to $10,000.

Smithfield man arrested for downloading child porn now faces child sex abuse charges

LOGAN — A 43-year-old Smithfield man, previously arrested for downloading child pornography, now has been charged with multiple counts of sexually abusing a child.

Daniel Stapley appeared in 1st District Court Monday morning. Judge Thomas Willmore scheduled a preliminary hearing for February 23, when state attorneys will present their evidence in the three cases. At that time, the judge will determine if the defendant will be bound over for trial.

Stapley was originally arrested after investigators received evidence that he was accessing images of child porn over the internet. Deputies served a search warrant to his parent’s home, where he was currently living in the basement. They seized his smart phone and took it as evidence. He was later charged with seven counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, a second-degree felony.

On February 6, Stapley was arrested while out on bond. State attorneys filed four new charges against him, including aggravated sexual abuse of a child, a first-degree felony, sex abuse of a child, a second-degree felony, dealing in materials harmful to a minor, a third-degree felony and a misdemeanor of lewdness involving a child.

During Monday’s court appearance, Judge Willmore ordered Stapley to remain in jail on a new bail of $40,000.

Stapley could face up to life in prison if found guilty.

Girl sues Netflix and documentary producer for using her image and name in film about child sex trafficking

The 14-year-old wears a cheery red shirt with her hair tucked behind her ears, a baby in her arms.

A series of similar photos flick past in the documentary: the girl with the baby, peering down at her child protectively, the duo together in front of a white board filled with upcoming activities.

These seemingly innocuous pictures, featured in the 2013 Netflix movie 'Tricked', have been at the center of a sensitive legal battle between the entertainment streaming service, the company that produced the documentary - Three Generations - and a victim of sexual abuse from Colorado.

The girl in the photos, referred to simply as 'Jane Roe' in court documents, sued Netflix and Three Generations for using her real first name and personal photos in the documentary, which highlights the inner workings of human trafficking and prostitution across the country. The original filing asked for damages in excess of $100,000.

Now, DailyMail.com has learned that Jane Roe has dropped the case against Netflix - but not Three Generations - in a move that would suggest some sort of agreement was worked out between the parties. 

When DailyMail.com asked Jane Roe's attorney Ahson Wali if there was a settlement involved, he said: 'We had to make a strategic decision,' and would not comment further. 

The documentary is still streaming on Netflix.

Now at least 18 years old, Jane and her attorneys argued in court documents  that because she was the victim of a sexual crime, her name and identity should not have been released to the public.

They claimed that none of her private information or history was available from any public source before the documentary was filmed.

In August of 2016, Jane realized she was a focus of the documentary when a relative told her about the film. 

Sergeant Daniel Steele of the Denver Police Department, one of the investigating officers in the case, is filmed giving details about the criminal case against Jane's abusers and how he came to know the young teenager. 

'We'd had a girl that my wife and I were mentoring named [Jane], who was actually the same age as my eldest daughter,' Steele said.

'[Jane] was 14 years old and she started living with her mother, who was a drug addict, and mom decided that it would be a good idea to have her daughter start performing sex acts on local drug dealers to get drugs for free.'

Eventually, she was taken out of the custody of her mother and placed in the foster care system. Steele hoped Jane, and her infant daughter, would be able to 'succeed' and 'move on' from her tough upbringing by being a part of his family.

Steele said: 'We welcomed Jane into our home, she spent Christmas with my family. I cared a lot for her.

'For some reason, there's a lot of animosity between social services and the police department. There was distrust from the start of me, what my motivations were. We were told what was best for Jane was not to be with us.

'I mean she was a kid, and she's been trounced on her whole life and treated like s**t her whole life, and of course she's going to go back to what she's used to.

'I tried to save her and I couldn't save her, and coming to the realization that you can't save all of them is hard. There's always at least one, and it's really hard when you try to do everything you can for them and they still fail.

'If she called me today and said, "Hey, I messed up, and I got involved in this environment," I will go help her. If she was locked up again, I would go visit her again,' Steele said in the film, choking up at several moments.

Despite Steele's emotional testimony, Jane said she suffered 'tremendous humiliation' after watching the documentary. Her full name was used in the final credits, along with the series of photos. 

'The statements that Steele made were not only false and defamatory [referring to Jane 'going back to what she was used to', i.e. prostitution], but Plaintiff's name and identity were of a private nature. Plaintiff was a victim of sexual crimes as a minor,' court documents filed by Jane's attorneys stated.

Jane goes on to describe how the film has affected her personally

'Having my identity and personal details exposed in the documentary Tricked has caused me severe anxiety and grief. I fear further public disclosure of my identity and the abuse I suffered as a minor.

'I believe that the publicity of these allegations will cause me to be re-traumatized and endure the same emotional turmoil I originally experienced as a victim of these crimes. The thought causes me severe stress and anxiety.

'I fear the possible impact on my daughter if the details of my abuse become public. My daughter is not old enough to understand what happened to me, and I fear my daughter will learn of what happened to me from some other source.

'I fear that my daughter will endure significant emotional distress if she learns of the way in which I was victimized as a child. 

'I am currently a stay-at-home mother, but someday would like to obtain an education and a career. I fear that I will not be able to obtain employment if the information revealed in Tricked becomes more widely known to the public,' Jane wrote. 

In other scenes of the documentary, Steele is shown arresting various pimps accused of abusing women and gathering evidence with other police officers. Several named former prostitutes also give their own personal take on the damaging industry.

In the lawsuit agaist Three Generations, Jane Roe is  seeking actual damages, emotional distress damages and all legal fees in a trial by jury.

‘Fallen Angels’: Sex Tourism & Philippines’ Abandoned Fatherless Kids

Angeles City in the Philippines is a well-known sex tourism destination, particularly for retired men in search of sex for sale. One frequently ignored offshoot of this is the sex workers’ children, who are subsequently abandoned, by foreign travelers.

Catholicism is the dominant religion in the country but with Angeles once home to an American air base, the city’s reputation became intertwined with the sex industry and is often branded as “Sin City.”

While the booming sex industry has been previously reported, the number of children growing up in the city without a father goes ignored.

Hundreds of young women in city find themselves with no other option than to sell their bodies for sex at various bars and nightclubs across the city. Speaking to an RT Documentary crew, a number of these women, now also mothers, say the fathers of their children will often deny that a child is theirs or just don’t care.

Often, it is the men’s lies that result in these unplanned pregnancies with women, who have sometimes been beaten or raped. One woman, Sarah, explained to RT that the father to her child, an Australian man, plied her with alcohol before she passed out. When she woke up, he told her “nothing happened.”

“I believe he took me by force,” she said. “Later, I asked him what happened. He said ‘Nothing. Nothing happened’.”

When Sarah found out she was pregnant, she told the father but he didn’t believe her.

“I told him he was my only client who didn’t use condoms,” Sarah says, but the man refuses to recognize his daughter. Even though she has a newborn, Sarah continues to prostitute herself to make ends meet and make sure there’s food on the table. Her son is left with her aunt, Nalee, who also has a daughter born of an encounter with a Scottish sex tourist.

In Nalee’s case, the man told her he had had a vasectomy. “But how did I get pregnant if he was sterile,” Nalee asks. “I didn’t know I was pregnant. A month later I did a test and it came back positive... If I’d known I was pregnant I would have taken pills.”

“I don’t care if you don’t want to help me but you have to support your daughter,” an emotional Sarah says. “I’ll keep working at the bar just to provide for my child.”

Sarah is well aware of the dangers involved in her line of work and says she is often “scared that something bad might happen” or that she’ll “get beaten up.”

“That happened to a friend of mine,” she told RT. “There’s a rumor that one of the girls was killed at the American hotel and her body hidden under the bed.”

For this reason, Sarah says she prefers “working" with older clients. “If I tell them I have to go home, they let me and at times they pay me extra, so I can buy milk for my daughter,” explained Sarah.

While the women try and do the best for their children, the kids themselves remain optimistic about their situation but do still miss their fathers. One such child is 12-year-old Jean-Lester, who hopes that one day he might meet his father.

“I’ve grown up, Dad. I hope to see you one day,” he says. “I wish you could come to my birthday.”

Jean-Lester’s father was a German tourist who left before the child was born. His mother then abandoned him when he was 2-months-old, leaving him in the care of a transgender neighbor named Pia.

“I love you very much, Pia. Please don’t abandon me,” Jean-Lester says. “Thank you for taking care of me. You raised me God won’t take her away from me, so I’ll take care of her when I grow up.”

Although their fathers may have abandoned them and they are being raised in slum like conditions, the children are surprisingly optimistic about their futures. Jean-Lester says he wants to become a teacher “and help the children who can’t go to school.”

“I’ll teach them until they finish school and help them any way I can,” the child says. He doesn’t want to stop there though. “After becoming a teacher, I want to become a doctor too,” he adds. “I want to be able to cure various diseases. That way I’ll be able to treat Pia and other sick people.”

A friend of Jean-Lester’s, Mary-Ann, is also a byproduct of the sex industry. The daughter of another German sex tourist who fled, the young girl says she has often imagined what her father looks like.

“I see him with long, pretty hair and a beard, this is what he looks like,” the 12-year-old says. “That’s what a lot of the foreign men that my mum has dated have looked like.”

Although she may be only 12-years-old, Mary-Ann is not oblivious to her history but is not keen to repeat it either.

“I don’t want to work in a bar, like my mom had to,” she says. “I don’t want to only have two years of schooling like her and end up working in a bar because I want to become a doctor when I grow up.”

Another woman told RT Documentary how her son’s father, an American man who still lives in the city, accepts he is the dad. For his part, he pays the mother 2000 pesos ($50) per month but she still struggles to provide food for family, some days having to ask her neighbors for food. According to the man’s neighbors, he has “a lot of girls that have more babies” and that each of them “gets 2000 pesos,” for which they must call to his house at a specific time and date to get the money.

At least one tourist bucked the trend when he visited the city and ended up marrying one of the prostitutes, Jen, after she fell pregnant in 2001.

“I just love her… the smile, she’s very funny and a very good face,” Patrick, an Irishman, told RT. Still living in Angeles, Patrick and Jen have three children but luck hasn’t been on their side when it comes to health. Patrick suffered a stroke in 2013 with his wife, now 34-years-old, suffering one shortly after, for which she remains bedbound and unable to talk, with Patrick caring for her.

For the men that visit Angeles in search of sex though, unplanned fatherhood hasn’t been deterrent and many don’t care about the consequences.

“You can take the girl out of the bar, but you can’t take the bar out of a girl… because they never change, they want the money,” one male tourist told RT. “It’s hard to trust a Filipino woman.”

Matthew Freud has cancelled a party which was due to be held tonight following his father Sir Clement's exposure as a paedophile.

Mr Freud, the 52-year-old founder of Freud Communications, has contacted guests to say he will no longer be holding the get-together, which would otherwise have been going on at the same time that ITV's Exposure documentary about Sir Clement's child abuse was being broadcast.

Mr Freud has a contacts book filled with celebrities, and guests at his previous parties have included Kate Moss, Idris Elba, Naomi Campbell, Tilda Swinton and Bob Geldof.

However the party that had been scheduled for tonight was described as a get-together for senior staff of Freud Communications and their friends.

Mr Freud has so far made no comment about the revelation that his father abused girls over a period spanning at least four decades.

His mother, Lady Freud, has apologised to Sir Clement's victims, saying she is "shocked, deeply saddened and profoundly sorry" for what he did to them.

Mr Freud's parties at his £20 million home in Primrose Hill, north London, often draw together clients and friends from the world of fashion, music, television and film.

Pop superstars including Noel Gallagher, Muse front man Matt Bellamy, TV presenters such as Dermot O'Leary and the actress Liv Tyler have all been party guests at his home, but no famous faces were expected at tonight's event, according to insiders.

This morning Andrew McGuinness, chief executive of Freud Communications, emailed guests to say: "With everything that's going on we think it's best to postpone this evening."

Sources have told The Telegraph that Mr Freud has already been shown the ITV documentary, which features interviews with two victims who were abused between 1948 and the late 1970s.

Sir Clement Freud, who died in 2009, had been "on the radar" of child abuse charities even before his death.

His early life
The grandson of psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud and brother of artist Lucian, Clement was born in Berlin in 1924, but fled to Britain with his Jewish family when the Nazis came to power.

As one of the country’s first celebrity chefs, he became a regular on TV and became a household name thanks to a series of dog food adverts in which he starred alongside a bloodhound called Henry.

He later moved into journalism before beginning a 14-year career in the House of Commons in 1973, where he shared an office with Cyril Smith, who was subsequently exposed as a serial paedophile.
