Manama, Bahrain: A court in Saudi Arabia has ruled in favour of a 17-year-old Saudi girl who refused to marry a man in his 90s.
The girl filed the law suit to abort her marriage contract after she discovered that the man who was about to be her husband was not the man her father had shown her.
The girl said that her father told her that a handsome young man in his 20s wanted to marry her. He later brought the young man home and the girl said that she accepted the marriage proposal.
However, when the marriage contract was drawn up later, she discovered that the groom’s birthdate showed that he was in his 90s, local news site Sabq reported on Wednesday.
She eventually discovered that her father had planned to marry her off to the old man and that the man she saw at their house was an accomplice in the scheme to deceive her and make her accept the marriage proposal.
According to the local traditions, the bride’s custodian signs the marriage contract.
The girl, who was living with her father after the divorce of her parents, told the police that she could not accept the marriage and preferred to abscond from home and ask for legal assistance, particularly that her father had bought her a ticket to go to Madina and join her husband.
The case was eventually taken to the court which on Tuesday issued its verdict to declare the marriage “null and void”.
Social media users blasted the father for his behaviour accusing him of “selling his daughter to the old man.”
They said that legal action should be taken against him for his abuse of his daughter’s trust and for chartering a horrible future for her.
Several users saluted the girl's courage and expressed admiration for her determination.
