B.C. Grandpa gets 7 years for sex abuse,
bestiality involving dog
A B.C. man who sexually abused three of his granddaughters, including an act of bestiality involving his pet dog, has been ordered to spend more than seven years in federal prison.
The 79-year-old man, who cannot be named under a court-ordered publication ban put in place to protect the identity of the victims, was sentenced after he was convicted on four counts of invitation to sexual touching and one of bestiality.
The offences took place in Northern B.C. between 2004 and 2013, when the victims were between the ages of four and 11. The communities in which the offences took place cannot be identified under the publication ban.
In one case, the man ordered his 11-year-old granddaughter to remove her pants and rub margarine on her genitals. He then directed his dog to eat the margarine.
In another case, he forced a nine-year-old granddaughter to watch pornography and then asked her to “do it for me.” She declined. In another case, he masturbated in front of a four-year-old granddaughter.
The man has no prior criminal record and plans to move to Kamloops with his wife once he is released from prison.
Prosecutors asked for nine years and the man’s defence lawyer sought six. B.C. Supreme Court Justice Paul Walker split the difference, sentencing the man to 7.5 years in prison.
In addition to the time behind bars, he will also be prohibited for life from having any unsupervised contact with anyone younger than 16. He was also given a 10-year firearms ban and ordered to submit a sample of his DNA to a national criminal database.
Swim coach accused of child sexual assault;
Berkeley, Emeryville police seek other alleged victims
Emeryville and Berkeley police are seeking more alleged victims after a man was taken into custody on suspicion of child sexual assault last week.
Tyler Livingston, 25, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of the sexual assault of a child. Police began to investigate Livingston after parents reported concerns about their children's interactions with Livingston, who taught swimming.
"Livingston has worked as a swim instructor in the Bay Area over the past few years and may have spent some time as a substitute teacher," Berkeley police said in a news release Thursday. "BPD wants victims and their families to know that they are not alone and encourage them to contact police."
Police did not release information about how many cases were being investigated, or over what span of time the suspected assaults took place.
Emeryville police urged potential victims and those with information related to the case to reach the department at (510) 596-3733.
BERKELEY — The alleged sexual assaults of young boys by a Bay Area swimming instructor went on for more than a year before his arrest last week, according to court records and authorities.
The suspect, Tyler Livingston, 25, of Emeryville, has been criminally charged in alleged assaults on five boys under age 10.
Police in both Berkeley, which is the lead agency in the investigation, and Emeryville, where Livingston lived, have said they believe there might be more victims and are urging them to come forward. Berkeley police said they have been interviewing other potential victims, but have not yet asked prosecutors for additional charges.
Livingston was charged Friday with 11 felony counts, including seven counts of lewd acts upon a child under the age of 14 as well as charges of intercourse or sodomy with a child 10 or under and continuous sexual abuse of a child under the age of 14, according to the records.
He was also charged with possession of a controlled substance with a firearm and manufacture or sale of a large capacity magazine, after an unregistered firearm and suspected cocaine were found in his apartment on 40th Street in Emeryville when he was arrested July 11.
He has pleaded not guilty and was being held at Santa Rita Jail without bail. A judge denied his request to be released on his own recognizance on Monday and he was scheduled for a bail hearing Friday.
