Substitute at Amsterdam daycare made child sex abuse images of 13 kids, molested 2
A 66-year-old man from Almere, who worked as a substitute teacher at a daycare center in Amsterdam, is suspected of sexually assaulting two children. He is also suspected of producing child sexual abuse images of those two and 11 other children. The man was arrested in November and has been in custody since, the Public Prosecution Service (OM) announced on Monday.
For most of the involved children, the man took nude photos of them “depicting no sexual acts,” the OM said. “The arrest was not previously reported to allow the police to thoroughly investigate the case.”
The Amsterdam police arrested the man at his Almere home on November 26 after the father of a 2-year-old girl reported the man for sexually assaulting his child at her daycare center. The man, working as a substitute teacher, allegedly picked her up and indecently touched her.
This happened on November 20, the man’s first day as a substitute at the daycare center, the OM said. “The daycare center immediately terminated its relationship with the man upon learning this.”
The police raided the man’s home and seized data storage devices for further investigation. Over the past three months, the police have been reviewing the footage and identifying the victims.
Investigators discovered that the man also sexually assaulted a 13-year-old boy when the child was in his care in January 2024. He also took nude photos of this boy, the 2-year-old-girl, and two other children: a 3-year-old-boy and a baby. Three of the four children lived in Amsterdam at the time, and one lived in Almere.
The police also identified nine other child victims. “The investigation into the offenses against these nine children is still ongoing,” the OM said. The police have no indications that there are more victims or that the man collaborated with others. “There are also no indications that the man distributed the child sexual abuse images.”
The examining magistrate arraigned the man on November 28 and remanded him into pre-trial detention. He is still in custody. The first preliminary hearing in his case is scheduled for March 11
