Paedophile who sexually abused infant and incited rape of another child jailed

Andrew McAdam, 36, pleaded guilty to nine charges spanning March 2023 to September 2024.

A paedophile who sexually abused an infant and incited the rape of another child has been jailed for 10-and-a-half years.

Andrew McAdam, 36, pleaded guilty to nine charges spanning March 2023 to September 2024.

Police Scotland said the sexual crimes against the infant took place in Edinburgh and the Trossachs.

The force said McAdam's offences also included conspiring with others across the border to commit sexual abuse, sharing indecent images, sexual exposure, public indecency and sexual communications.

He was jailed at the High Court in Glasgow on Tuesday.

In his sentencing statement, judge Lord Scott said McAdam conspired to sexually exploit and abuse his infant victim and "incited and encouraged the rape" of a separate child at the hands of another man.

The judge stated: "Some conspiracies go no further than the agreement to commit a crime before a change of mind or detection, but this wicked conspiracy was made real."

Lord Scott added: "All of this was entirely for your own gratification."

Part of a victim impact statement prepared by the infant's parents was read out to the court.

In it, they said: "The potential impact of [the child] finding out what happened in the wrong way is catastrophic.

"It is like holding a bomb with the power to completely destroy your child's life if it is detonated at the wrong moment.

"It is terrifying not knowing the impact that this will have, not knowing if our approach to telling [the child] will be the right one."

The parents also lamented that when the child grows up and "inevitably makes mistakes or choices" they disagree with, they will "forever question if the crimes [the victim] faced at such a young age and their impact, direct or indirectly, will have contributed".

Highlighting the criminal justice social work report prepared, Lord Scott said McAdam had "shown no convincing or meaningful remorse".

The judge noted: "You take limited responsibility for your offending - deflecting, minimising and denying the full extent of your involvement."

McAdam was handed an extended sentence, with 10-and-a-half years in jail and three-and-a-half years on licence once released back into the community.

He was also placed on the sex offenders' register indefinitely and banned from contacting his victim.

Police Scotland urged all those who have experienced sexual abuse to report it to the force.

Detective Inspector Wells said: "McAdam subjected his child victim to horrific abuse."

The DI added: "Sexual crime of any kind has no place in society and we remain committed to supporting victims and bringing those responsible to justice."

Jail for man who sexually abused 6 boys, confessed voluntarily and underwent chemical castration

Chen Caijin, who himself was a victim of childhood sexual abuse, came forward to the police and asked for the maximum number of strokes of the cane.

Singapore Supreme Court

SINGAPORE: A man who had sexually abused six boys when he was a youth voluntarily confessed his crimes to the police when he was an adult, asking for the maximum number of strokes of the cane.

He also voluntarily agreed to receive injections that amounted to chemical castration.

Chen Caijin, a 34-year-old Singaporean, was sentenced on Wednesday (Oct 28) to jail for 19 years, one month, two weeks and 14 days, with the maximum 24 strokes of the cane.

He pleaded guilty to six charges including sexual penetration of a minor, molestation, taking nude photos of a child, voluntarily causing hurt and relinquishing a bank account.

Another 16 charges were considered in sentencing.

THE CASE

Chen committed the sexual offences for a few years after 2010, when he was aged between 17 and 20 and the victims were aged between nine and 16 years.

He got to know the victims through playing arcade or online games or through mutual friends.

He paid for some of the victims' games, with at least one victim allowing the sexual offences to continue as he was worried Chen would stop paying for his games and meals if he didn't.

The first victim was a school drop-out who would sniff glue with his friends and game at a 24-hour Local Area Network (LAN) shop in Geylang.

Chen paid for the gaming by the victim and the victim's friends. He also tried kissing the boy, who was 14 to 15 at the time, but was pushed away.

Chen molested the victim multiple times, causing him to feel uncomfortable. The victim kept quiet as he thought Chen was "just playing", the court heard.

One night in 2010, while Chen was with the victim and the victim's friends at a void deck, he performed a sex act on the boy.

When the boy woke up, his friends were laughing at him, which confused the victim.

Chen also sexually assaulted the boy when he slept over at Chen's house.

Chen also performed sex acts on another victim and took nude photos of him, which he shared with three mutual friends without consent.

CONFESSION

The offences went undetected until Nov 1, 2019, when Chen sent an email to the police.

He said he had committed serious crimes in the past but had not been caught. He said he wanted to ask some questions before deciding whether to admit to the crimes.

He also said he wanted to "negotiate a certain type of punishment".

He sent another email to the police a few days later, saying he deserved to be punished and asked how he could be sentenced to the maximum number of strokes of the cane.

The police invited Chen to provide a statement in person, and Chen did so on Nov 8, 2019.

He admitted to molesting several individuals and having sex with underage victims. However, he refused to reveal their identities or details as he did not want to be arrested or detained.

The police seized his phone and began identifying suspected victims.

They discovered that he had engaged in at least 22 sexual offences between 2010 and 2014.

Chen was largely cooperative throughout investigations and willingly disclosed information on his sexual crimes.

He was arrested in April 2024 and has been remanded since then.

A psychiatrist at the Institute of Mental Health examined Chen and said he had personality disorder with prominent masochistic and antisocial traits.

He also had paraphilic disorder, with an extensive history of childhood sexual trauma.

Dr Cheow Enquan said Chen's main sexual interest was in teenage boys, but he also had strong paedophilic tendencies as he displayed sexual interest in males under the age of 13.

There was no direct contributory link between any of his conditions to the offences, Dr Cheow found.

SENTENCING

Deputy Public Prosecutors Ho May Kim and Sarah Siaw sought at least 18 years' jail to 20 years and four months' jail, along with an additional 14 days' jail for breaching his remission order.

They also asked for the maximum 24 strokes of the cane.

Chen has past convictions for offences including theft.

Ms Ho highlighted Chen's persistent and predatory conduct, as well as the number of victims.

She accepted that Chen had voluntarily come forward but said he withheld crucial details and did not want to be arrested in 2019.

Chen was defended by Mr Pramnath Vijayakumar and Ms Alysha Saraswathy Ratnam from Pro Bono SG.

Ms Ratnam said her client did not present as a "typical sexual offender".

While he was now 34, the sexual offences were committed when he was 17 to 20 years old, she said.

She said Chen was sincerely remorseful, which he had demonstrated in several ways including his voluntary confession.

Ms Ratnam said Chen wished to negotiate a sentence purely because he felt he deserved a harsher one.

He was wracked by guilt and determined not to commit such offences again, so he proactively sought medical treatment at IMH, said the lawyer.

She said Chen was prescribed injections that lowered testosterone levels to manage his sexual urges.

Doctors said this was a form of chemical castration, she added.

Chen even proactively requested an increase of the dosage to assist him in managing his urges, said Ms Ratnam.

She added that Chen himself is a victim of childhood sexual abuse, but did not elaborate.

"The defence is not submitting that this should excuse his offending," said Ms Ratnam.

"We merely wish to raise this factor to give this court a holistic picture of Mr Chen and the internal struggles he wrestled with," she said.

She said that as Chen grew older, he realised the gravity of his offences and tried to right the wrongs he had caused.

His mother, who is 71 years old this year, was diagnosed with stomach cancer in April and Chen wishes to see her again before she dies, said Ms Ratnam.

In sentencing, Justice Mavis Chionh said there was a "disturbing" pattern of conduct where Chen would strike up a friendship with a victim before initiating physical contact that escalated into sexual acts.

It would not be accurate to attribute his offending conduct purely to youth, youthful folly or lack of self-restraint, she said.

Justice Chionh said it was also troubling that Chen himself informed his IMH psychiatrist that he continued to molest other inmates and even prison staff while he was remanded.

Still, she accepted that Chen had shown genuine remorse including voluntarily submitting to chemical castration.

For sexual penetration of a minor, he could have been jailed for up to 20 years and fined or caned.

Dutch couple found guilty of years of sexual abuse of six children

The district court in Utrecht has sentenced 57-year-old Richard van den B. from Woudenberg to 20 years in prison and compulsory psychiatric treatment on Tuesday for repeatedly sexually abusing very young children. Some of the victims were drugged with GHB. Van den B.'s ex-wife, 34-year-old Evertje van E., who was also involved in the abuse, received a 12-year prison sentence and compulsory psychiatric treatment.

The six victims, five girls and a boy, were relatives of Van E.'s brother or children of a close friend. Over the course of six years, the couple repeatedly looked after the children, who were between 0 and 9 years old.

Prosecutors had recommended 30 years in prison and compulsory psychiatric treatment for Van den B., while demanding a 20-year sentence for Van E. However, the Utrecht court handed down considerably lighter sentences after finding that fewer offences had been proven.

It found no evidence that the youngest child had been sexually abused, although it ruled that she had been "sexually corrupted," including through the defendants having sex in front of her.

The investigation began in October 2024 after one of the children told her mother about the abuse. Searches of the defendants' phones subsequently uncovered 8,000 pages of messages containing graphic discussions of past, planned and desired sexual abuse.

The court said the couple had spoken about the children in a "demeaning and deeply contemptuous" way, treating them merely as objects to be used. The victims continue to struggle with the trauma and are undergoing therapy.

Van E. cooperated with investigators and openly discussed the case during the trial. She suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, partly as a result of years of sexual abuse by her father. The court said her testimony helped corroborate the children's statements.

Van den B. continued to deny remembering the repeated abuse during the trial. The court dismissed this as “completely unbelievable,” saying he was failing to recognize the profound impact on the victims and was causing them further suffering.

Both defendants were also ordered to undergo compulsory psychiatric treatment, as the court said letting them re-enter society without treatment would be “irresponsible.”

A man and a woman have been charged by detectives investigating reports of non-recent child sexual abuse in Bradford.

Brenda Altham, 68, has been charged with nine counts of counselling the rape of a girl under the aged of 16.

Paul Hinsley, also 68, has been charged with four counts of counselling the rape of a girl under the age of 16.

The charges relate to offences which are reported to have occurred in the Thorpe Edge area of the city in the late 1970s and relate to one female victim who was aged 14 at the time.

The defendants, who are both from Bradford, have been bailed to appear at the city's magistrates' court on 1 December.

Former Junior A hockey executive charged with child luring, sexual exploitation in Alberta

CALGARY - A former Junior A hockey broadcaster and executive who worked with teams across Western Canada is facing five charges related to alleged sexual offences involving underage male hockey players from Alberta and Saskatchewan, as RCMP investigate whether there are additional victims.

“Our investigation is solely focused on our three (victims) as of right now,” said RCMP Cpl. Dan Campbell. “We’ll be welcoming anyone that believes that they were a victim as well to come forward.”

Tyler Robb King, 39, has been charged with three counts of child luring, one count of sexual exploitation and one count of making child pornography.

RCMP say the three alleged victims were male hockey players from Alberta and Saskatchewan who were under 18 at the time of the alleged offences. All three played hockey within the Okotoks Oilers Athletic Association.

According to court documents, the three child-luring charges involve separate alleged victims, with offences said to have occurred at or near Okotoks, Alta.

The first allegedly occurred between June 2021 and April 2023, the second between January 2021 and October 2024, and the third between September and October 2022.

King was a broadcaster and assistant general manager of business operations for the Okotoks Oilers hockey team until the summer of 2024.

The investigation began after the organization contacted police about a former employee.

Campbell said the Okotoks Oilers reported “that one of their former employees was soliciting and compensating players for intimate images and sexual videos.”

In a statement Monday, the Okotoks Oilers said they were “not aware of these allegations while this individual was with our organization.”

“After his departure, we received information that, while unverified at the time, raised enough concern that we felt it needed a closer look. We reviewed it carefully and passed it to the RCMP.”

The organization said it is co-operating with investigators and that the safety and well-being of its players remain its highest priority.

King joined the Okotoks Oilers in 2021, where he spent three seasons before moving to British Columbia to work with the Nanaimo Clippers as vice-president of business operations.

“King has been employed and has worked with hockey teams in Fort McMurray, Okotoks, Brooks and Nanaimo,” Campbell said.

The Brooks Bandits also issued a statement Monday, saying the organization is aware of the case and will co-operate with local RCMP.

In 2025, King joined the State University of New York at Oswego as a professor of practice specializing in multimedia journalism and sports, according to his university biography. The biography also identifies him as a faculty adviser to the campus television station.

Police say King was arrested Friday at the Lansdowne border crossing near Kingston, Ont., after living and working in the United States.

He was remanded into custody following a judicial interim release hearing and is expected to be returned to Alberta to face the charges.

The RCMP investigation remains ongoing, with police working alongside other jurisdictions as they seek to identify any additional potential victims.

None of the allegations have been proven in court.

‘If bad adults are in positions of power, bad things can happen’

For Greg Gilhooly, a lawyer and survivor of sexual abuse by former junior hockey coach Graham James, the allegations bring back painful memories.

“The decades kind of fall away. And I’m taken back to when I was a teen and, you know, trying to remember just how vulnerable I was at the time,” he said.

Gilhooly said young athletes can be particularly vulnerable when adults hold significant influence over their futures.

“Because so much is at play and adults have control over your future, if bad adults are in positions of power, bad things can happen.”

Doug King, a professor of justice studies at Mount Royal University, said the allegations highlight the seriousness of potential abuses of trust and authority.

“If you are under the age of 18 and a person in power, trust or authority uses that power, trust, authority to exploit you, that’s serious,” he said.

Gilhooly also warned against dismissing allegations simply because someone is well regarded in the community.

“Anybody is capable of everything, and you don’t ever really know anybody,” he said.

For anyone considering reporting past abuse, Gilhooly said the decision must remain their own.

“I would never tell somebody to come forward who wasn’t comfortable coming forward. But I would say that coming forward has been a good thing for me in terms of my recovery.”

Man, 39, charged in child sex offences case worked for Nanaimo hockey team

Alberta RCMP say a 39-year-old man is facing multiple charges in connection with a child sexual offences investigation.

Tyler King is charged with three counts of luring a person under 18 years, sexual exploitation of a young person and making child sexual abuse material. Dan Campbell, with the South Alberta District general investigation section, said Monday (Nov. 2).

King, who is a Canadian citizen, was arrested at the Ontario-New York Lansdowne border crossing, just outside of Kingston, Ont., on Oct. 30. He was living in the U.S. and was employed by the State University of New York at Oswego at the time of his arrest.

Campbell said he is not aware of King being under investigation in the U.S., but police are “still liaising with all partner agencies.”

Three of the victims were under the age of 18 at the time of alleged offences. Campbell said the investigation is currently only focused on those three victims.

Police say the victims are from Alberta and Saskatchewan, but wouldn’t specify which communities the victims were connected to.

They were all Junior A hockey players.

King has worked with multiple hockey teams in Alberta, including teams in Fort McMurray, Okotoks and Brooks, as well as the Nanaimo Clippers in B.C. and teams in Ontario.

Campbell said King held “a variety of corporate business and communication roles throughout the years, with a fair number of organizations.”

'Dreadful' rapist abused girls in his car for cash

Duncan Leatherdale

A "dreadful" paedophile who gave money to two young vulnerable teenage girls after he repeatedly raped them in his car has been jailed for 15 years.

Paul Black
, 36, first met the victims, who were aged 13 and 14, online and went on to rape them on multiple occasions after driving them to an industrial estate, Teesside Crown Court heard.

The girls said they had been targeted for their vulnerability, while a judge said Black took advantage of the "impressionable young girls".

Black, from Springwell, near Washington, who had previous police cautions for flashing and sexual assault, admitted 28 offences including eight counts of child rape.

Black made contact with the 13-year-old victim on Snapchat and, despite her telling him her age, quickly arranged to pay her for sex, prosecutor Shaun Dodds said.

Posing as a 25-year-old man called James, Black would pick her up in his car and drive to an industrial estate on Teesside where he would rape her, the court heard, before calling her degrading names and giving her cash.

The painter decorator raped her three times and her 14-year-old friend five times, the court heard, with the girls saying he was "very pushy" and would ignore their requests to stop.

Indecent images

Black would make comments along the lines of he was "paying for it so they had to do it", the court heard.

He also got them to send sexual images of themselves to him, the court was told.

The offending came to light when one of the girls was found at school with a bundle of cash, which led to her telling teachers what had been happening, the court heard.d

When he was arrested, police found dozens of indecent images of children on his phone including videos of young girls being raped, Dodds said.

He admitted to police he raped the girls and claimed he had given them more than £400.

Black also admitted requesting sexual images from 13-year-old girls online, the court heard.

In statements read to the court, the girls said they had been struggling to cope with the effects of Black's abuse.

One said she felt she had been "targeted" and "used" by him due to her "vulnerabilities", while the second said she would feel "safer" knowing he was in prison.

She said initially she thought she was to blame but now understood "none of it is my fault".

'You didn't care'

Black had no previous convictions but did have three police cautions all for sexual offences, Dodds said.

In 2005 he exposed himself to a female stranger, three years later he threatened to publish indecent images of a 16-year-old girl he met on social media and in 2014 he grabbed the buttocks of a woman as she jogged past him, the court heard.

Judge Richard Clews told Black those previous encounters with the law "obviously did not change anything in the way you lived your life".

He said Black made contact with the "two young impressionable girls" purely for his own sexual gratification, adding the rapist repeatedly "took advantage" of their vulnerability in a "quite dreadful way".

The judge said Black "enticed" and groomed the victims with money, telling him: "You didn't care quite frankly whether they consented or not, you were going to do what you wanted to do regardless."

His actions had had a "very considerable effect" on the girls, the judge added.

He ruled Black was a dangerous offender and ordered him to serve a further three years on extended licence upon his eventual release from prison.

Black must also sign the sex offender register for the rest of his life.

Speaking after sentencing, Det Con Sean Hobbs, from Cleveland Police, said Black was a "predator" who "used Snapchat to groom young girls solely for his own sexual gratification".

The officer praised the "courage" of the girls for speaking to police, adding their testimony had "gone a long way to ensure Black has no choice but to admit what he has done and secured a prison sentence".
