Arrests after historic child sex abuse allegations at Lincolnshire churches

Arrests have been made following a number of allegations of historic sexual abuse of children at a group of Lincolnshire churches

Lincolnshire Police has confirmed a number of people have been bailed pending further enquiries as part of an investigation called Operation Redstone.

This was launched following "a number of concerns" being referred to the force in 2015 after a review of past safeguarding cases by the Diocese of Lincoln dating back to 1958.

As a result, Stephen Crabtree, right, who served as the rector of Washingborough and Heighington until 2014, was jailed for three years in March this year after admitting six counts of indecent assault on a 15-year-old girl between April 1992 and April 1993.

Lincolshire Police confirmed in September that it was looking into historic abuse claims surrounding the Cathedral School in Lincoln, which educated the minster's choristers and was amalgamated with others in 1996 to become Lincoln Minster School.

Operation Redstone covers all areas of the Diocese of Lincoln but neither officials there or Lincolnshire Police will give specific details about the number of arrests or the number of alleged victims, citing operational reasons.

However, a charity which supports historic victims of child abuse believes that giving such detail could prompt more alleged victims to come forward, as has happened in the youth football abuse scandal.

Peter Saunders, founder of The National Association for People Abused in Childhood (NAPAC), said: "Our priority is always to support the victims and we would want to avoid anything that would hamper any potential prosecutions.

"Victims do deserve some semblance of justice and if the perpetrators are still alive there's some hope.

"But I think it would be helpful for the Diocese of Lincoln and Lincolnshire Police to release details of the number of arrests and the number of complaints in this investigation in a considered and appropriate manner.

"This could give other alleged victims the confidence to come forward.

"I have personally spoken to a number of Jimmy Savile's victims who say: 'If only we had known there were others I'd have come forward'."

Couple sentenced to total of 40 years for

sex abuse against children

A couple from Northamptonshire have been handed jail terms totalling more than 40 years for a sustained campaign of sexual abuse against children.

Gavin Kennedy, 40, was sentenced to 22 years while his partner, 32-year-old Jessica Stone, received 20 years. Both defendants were given a further extended sentence which means they will be on licence for a total of eight years each after their release.

The pair, from Desborough, were found guilty of 18 charges relating to child sex abuse following a week-long trial at Northampton Crown Court in October.

During the trial, prosecutor Nicola Moore said Kennedy had been the initial instigator for the acts, which sprang from a taste in extreme pornography.

Ms Moore told the court that Kennedy possessed a “voracious sexual appetite” and searched for pornography using phrases such as “barely legal”, “very young girls” and “jailbait” - a coarse term referring to children under the age of sexual consent.

The couple were charged with three counts of causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, engaging in sexual activity in the presence of child, aiding and abetting the rape of a child under 13 by a male and aiding and abetting the rape of a child under 13. They were also convicted of two further counts of sexual assault of a child under 13 and one of cruelty to a child.

I am very pleased at the length of the sentence handed down by the court following 

a long and complex investigation. This has concluded a very difficult period for all 

involved, and I hope they can start to put the events of the past behind them and 

rebuild their lives now that justice has been done.

Detective Superintendent Stewart Gull said: ‘We have made it clear that historical abuse, whether sexual, physical or emotional, is unacceptable and will be investigated.'

ALMOST 100 allegations of historical child sexual abuse have been reported to the States police since the force launched a major investigation 18 months ago, the JEP can reveal.

In one of the largest abuse inquiries the Island has ever seen, seven investigators are currently working on 18 cases of alleged abuse, many of which date back to the 1970s and 1980s.

So far the inquiry, codenamed Operation Whistle, has resulted in two convictions. Another two suspects are awaiting trial in the Royal Court.

Files on four more suspects are with the Law Officers Department, which will decide whether or not to launch prosecutions.

Speaking about Operation Whistle, Detective Superintendent Stewart Gull, head of crime services for the States police, said: ‘Operation Whistle has proved both complex and challenging. In bringing together a dedicated team from other sections, we have been keen to maximise the support for victims and, where possible, bring offenders to justice. With 18 ongoing investigations, this work continues.

Elvis Impersonator Stands Trial On

Child Sex Abuse Charges

An Elvis impersonator from south-east Cornwall stands trial over a string of child sex charges.

Derrel Weaver is accused of 12 counts of indecently assaulting a young girl and two of gross indecency.

The offences are alleged to have taken place between 1994 and 2014.

The 62 year old from Widegates in Looe is appearing at Truro Crown Court.

He denies all charges.

The trial, which began on Monday, is expected to last until the end of the week.

Jersey Child Abuse Inquiry - Does It Really Want to Know?

A funny thing happened on the way to the truth at the Jersey Child Abuse Inquiry. A sudden, unexpected left turn raises the question of whether or not the Inquiry really wants to know what happened.

On Wednesday 18 November (day 109 of Inquiry) anti Child Abuse campaigner, and former Jersey politician, Trevor Pitman, gave his, much anticipated, evidence as a public witness to the on-going CHILD ABUSE INQUIRY.

Mr. Pitman's substantial statement, with some 20 plus supporting documents, was believed to be a damming, and scathing, indictment on Jersey authorities, not only in Child Protection failures, but in the corrupt and politicised "justice" system which, it is believed, is at the heart of the Child Abuse cover-ups.

In the video interview below, Mr. Pitman talks of his shock after being asked by lawyers to the Inquiry to familiarise himself with a number of documents because he was to be asked questions on them. Only to discover that NO questions were asked on the documents he was provided. Why would the Inquiry Team apparently mislead, or waste a witness' time like this?

The fact is that Mr. Pitman was questioned on very little else other than his time working as a professional Youth Worker. This is a little concerning when one considers that Mr. Pitman was giving evidence to the Inquiry as part of phase two which according to the Chair Francis Oldham QC:

“In October the Inquiry will begin hearings in relation to Phase 2. At that stage we will look at the decisions taken in relation to the timing of the police investigation and subsequent decisions to prosecute alleged abusers. Did those responsible for deciding which cases to prosecute take a professional approach? Was that process free from political or other interference at any level?"

It is difficult to reconcile how experiences of being a Youth Worker meets the criteria for phase two of the Inquiry. It's further concerning (as discussed in interview below) to discover that, according to Mr. Pitman, the Inquiry Team does not have possession of a number of crucial documents needed to understand "The Jersey Way" and the culture that allows Child Abuse(rs) to continue on the Island despite the Establishment cry "Lessons Have Been Learnt."

These documents include the six appendices to The Sharp Report, The Hansard of the In-Camera debate where former Home Affairs Minister Deputy Andrew Lewis revealed that he had (possibly illegally) suspended the then Chief Police Officer Graham Power QPM where Mr. Lewis has some significant questions to answer. 

The third set of documents are a number of boxes of documents, where there is a paper trail, seem to have gone missing. It is unclear as to whether the Inquiry Team has made any attempt to obtain any of these sets of documents but it was made aware of their existence some 17 months ago.

Mr. Pitman's live evidence lasted approximately two hours which, as mentioned above, largely consisted of questions relating to his time as a Youth Worker. When Counsel to the Inquiry announced she had no further questions for Mr. Pitman there were audible gasps from a packed public gallery who were left wondering is the Inquiry just going through the motions by calling Anti Child Abuse Campaigners as witnesses? Why was Mr. Pitman not questioned according to the criteria of phase two? Is the Inquiry burying crucial evidence that could expose "The Jersey Way?"

As we have mentioned previously the Inquiry looks to have done some GOOD WORK in some areas and some NOT SO GOOD work in other areas. This latest episode unfortunately falls into the latter category.

Celebrities, politicians and sports stars are among 13 famous people who will be questioned by police investigating a child sex abuse ring in Jersey.

Detectives revealed prominent figures who are "well known" will be quizzed "imminently" into allegations of institutionalized sex offences on the Channel Island.

Officers have not revealed their identities but confirmed that 13 of the suspects are public figures including celebrities, media personalities, politicians and sports stars.

They are among dozens of people likely to be questioned over the next few weeks as part of Operation Whistle investigation into historical child abuse.

In Jersey, the latest allegations of abuse include some suspects and victims not previously identified in the force's 2008 child abuse investigation, Operation Rectangle.

The alleged abuse is said to have occurred between the late 1930s and mid 2000s across four institutions, including the infamous Haut de la Garenne children's home.

The other institutions, which have not been named, are no longer functioning.

Detective Superintendent Stewart Gull said his task force expects to begin interviews "imminently".

He said the police have around 50 victims and 45 suspects - some of whom are dead or not yet identified - but 13 of them to be questioned are well known.

He added: "Some of them are celebrities, politicians, some of them are people in the media, some of them are sports people. These are people who are well known."

"Some of them are still alive and some of them are deceased but we will not be disclosing more than that.

"Some of them were visitors to the island, some will have been resident."

He also confirmed the oldest cases date back to the late 1930s but the majority are from the 1970s and 1980s.

He said: "The most recent cases have been reported in the last five to ten years.

"There may be arrests made imminently.

"There will be interviews soon and some of the suspects will have to travel to the island from the UK."

It is understood there may be some crossover with the London Metropolitan Police's Operation Yewtree investigation into sexual abuse carried out by the former children's TV presenter, Jimmy Savile.

Savile is not believed to be one of the 13 prominent suspects identified but officers said the force had fielded several further complaints about abuse carried out by him in the island.
