Another Madeleine McCann emerges, this one in the USA - What do you think?

U.S. woman claims she’s Madeleine McCann, shares DNA test to try to prove it

On the left is Madeleine McCann, and Eugenea Collins, who claims to be the missing girl, is on the right. Family of Madeleine McCann/ Eugenea Collins / Facebook

An American woman from Arkansas is claiming that she is the real Madeleine McCann, a British girl who disappeared in 2007 while on a family vacation in Portugal.

Eugenea Collins, 22, began posting her claims on Instagram in September 2024 with the username TheOfficialMadeleineMcCann, and the account features numerous side-by-side photos of Collins and McCann.

In her most recent post, Collins shared an ancestry DNA test that shows she is 68 per cent English and northwestern European, which she believes supports her claims.

Collins claims she has struggled to obtain official identification, including her birth certificate. In an Instagram post from November 2024, Collins wrote, “I am 22 years old and my birthday is October 23rd 2002. I am unable to get an id due to my paperwork not having the same matching name all of the way across.”

“I have also never seen an original birth certificate just the one from after my stepdad adopted me which created one and ‘sealed’ off everything and up until 2018 you weren’t Able to ever have the stuff opened back up,” she added.

“Without an id I can’t go to college or even get a job so I can support myself. I graduated high school a year early and I could really do something with my life if given the opportunity.”

In another social media post, Collins shared photos of her biological father, named Eugene, and claimed he looked similar to Christian Brueckner, who was under investigation in the 2007 disappearance of McCann.

“I was always told the man in the photos was my biological father Eugene Collins. The man I’m named after. I never had any relationship with this man whatsoever and I was always told he was a little off in the head,” Collins wrote.

“My mother never allowed us to have any kind of relationship with him whatsoever and now I understand why.”

Collins said that she’s “met him a couple of times” and claims he’s “always been weird about his picture being taken.”

“When I first saw the photos of Christian Bruckner I instantly recognized that man,” Collins wrote.

Brueckner hasn’t been formally charged in the McCann case. He spent many years in Portugal, including in the resort of Praia da Luz around the time of McCan’s disappearance there in 2007. He has denied any involvement in her disappearance.

Collins also told the U.K. tabloid Daily Mail that she first began to think she was McCann when she saw Polish woman Julia Wandel claim the same thing while appearing on Dr. Phil.

“If it wasn’t for me seeing her on the Dr. Phil show I would’ve never known. In a way her stupidity actually helped me find my family,” Collins claimed. “I saw the age progressions and it was like I was looking in a mirror. I just know I saw pictures of myself online and it says I’m missing.”

Collins said she has tried to contact police in Arkansas about her claims but they have not taken her seriously.

Arkansas is a long way from Portugal! I see Eugenia has fuller lips than Maddy and her ears appear to be different. The coloboma in Maddie's right eye is not there, although I have personally seen them come and go in friends, usually friends who have been traumatized.

This comes just days after Wandel, also known as Julia Wandelt or Julia Wendell, was arrested and accused of stalking McCann’s family by contacting them incessantly and turning up at their home in the U.K.

Wandel was arrested on Wednesday at an airport in Bristol.

According to the outlet, she has been charged with stalking four members of the McCann family — parents Gerry and Kate, and twin siblings Sean and Amelie — throughout 2024 and into 2025. She is also alleged to have paid unwanted and unsolicited visits to their home twice, in May and December of last year.

On the left is Julia Wandel, the Polish woman who claims to be missing girl Madeleine McCann, on the right. @iammadeleinemccan/Family of Madeleine McCann

The charges state the alleged contact, which came in the form of phone calls, voicemails, a letter and WhatsApp and Instagram messages, “had a substantial adverse effect” on the family.

In 2023, Wandel began posting numerous pieces of “evidence” to social media, saying she believed she might be the missing McCann.

Her spokesperson said a DNA test confirmed Wandel was not the missing girl. In fact, the test showed that Wandel has near 100 per cent Polish heritage, with no evidence of British or even German ancestry.

Polish police disputed Wandel’s claims that she was McCann about a week after she reached viral fame and Wandel’s own parents spoke out about her campaign, saying they were “devastated” by her claims and the worldwide media attention they garnered.

Portuguese police apologize to Madeleine McCann’s parents

Portuguese police have apologized to the parents of Madeleine McCann for the way the family was treated during the investigation into their three-year-old daughter’s disappearance in 2007.

Earlier this year, a group of senior police officers from Lisbon travelled to London to meet with Madeleine’s father Gerry McCann, according to BBC Panorama. The officers reportedly apologized to Gerry for the handling of their investigation.

Madeleine went missing from a hotel room in Praia da Luz, in Portugal’s Algarve, while on vacation with her family in May 2007. Gerry and Kate McCann were dining with friends at a nearby tapas bar, leaving Madeleine and her two siblings asleep in their bedroom on the evening she vanished.

Her disappearance launched a cross-country investigation and resulted in an international media frenzy. Publicity for the case only increased when Gerry and Kate were named as formal suspects, or “arguidos” in Portuguese. The parents were questioned by police, who at the time believed they may have staged the abduction.

In the years since Madeleine’s disappearance, Portuguese police have said their initial investigation was improperly handled.

Gerry and Kate were cleared of suspicion in 2008. They have not commented publicly on the apology from Portuguese police.

Where is the investigation now?

In the more than 15 years since Madeleine’s disappearance, Portuguese officials have collaborated with English and German police in an attempt to locate the girl and her kidnapper.

In June 2020, German police said Madeleine is assumed dead. British authorities continue to treat her disappearance as a missing person case.

Later in 2022, authorities appeared to make an advance in the cold case when German police named Christian Brücker (sic), a convicted sex offender, as a formal suspect.

It was the first time a formal suspect had been named in Madeleine’s case since her parents were declared “arguidos.”

Brückner, who is German, is currently serving a seven-year prison sentence for raping a 72-year-old woman in 2005 in the same area where Madeleine went missing. He has separately been charged with rape, sexual assault and sexual assault of a child.

Brückner has not been officially charged in Madeleine’s case. He has denied any involvement.

In May, police in Portugal launched a new reservoir search for Madeleine’s body at the behest of German authorities. During the search, officials used rakes and hoe-like tools to prod the ground beside the Arade dam, about 50 kilometres from where Madeleine vanished. German prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters said police in Portugal were investigating the area “on the basis of certain tips” but did not share any other information.

Wolters this week praised the apology from Portuguese police to the McCann family.

“It’s a good sign,” he told the BBC. “It shows that, in Portugal, there’s development in the McCann case.”

Madeleine’s disappearance remains unsolved. This year, on the 16th anniversary of their daughter’s disappearance, Gerry and Kate said Madeleine is “very much missed.”

The family said it is “hard” to describe how they feel. They shared the poem The Contradiction by Clare Pollard because it “resonates strongly with us.”

“I cannot hold you, yet I do: // please let me hold you in my head // and where you are now, hold me too,” the poem reads.

Madeleine McCann - Possible new clues found in Portugal after Maddie's 20th Birthday

Reservoir search in Madeleine McCann case uncovers ‘relevant clue’

If she is alive, Maddie would be 20 now (12 May 2023). With all the scenarios running through my head as to what might have happened to her, I often think it would be better if she is in Heaven. We may have to wait until we get there to find out the whole story. God have mercy on that girl and her family.

A three-day police search of a remote Portuguese reservoir has reportedly turned up a “relevant clue” in the 2007 disappearance of British tot Madeleine McCann.

Portuguese authorities on Thursday wrapped up their search of the Algarve reservoir some 30 miles from the Praia da Luz resort, where the 3-year-old girl was last seen alive 16 years ago.

German sex offender Christian Brueckner, 45 — jailed in his homeland for an unrelated case — allegedly visited the reservoir “some days” after Madeleine vanished.

Portuguese Judiciary Police were tight-lipped about the outcome of the search, which involved sniffer dogs, digging equipment, a drone and a tree cutter, saying the effort “resulted in the collection of some material that will be subject to the competent expertise. The material collected will be handed over to the German authorities.”

Portuguese newspaper Correio de Manha (Morning Mail) reported that in the course of the search, cops came upon a “relevant clue,” but it’s unknown what it was.

Several items were reportedly removed from the Barragem do Arade dam area, including a bra strap, pieces of fabric and plastic items, but it’s unclear if they’re related to Madeleine’s case, the Mirror reported.

Police were reportedly searching for a gun and a camcorder that allegedly belonged to Brueckner — and had been stolen and then thrown away by two of his former accomplices in a petty-crime gang.

According to a jailhouse informant, the camcorder was believed to have footage of Brueckner torturing and raping an American woman and a teenage girl, the Daily Mail reported.

the search, which was launched at the request of German authorities.

The latest search came after a request from German authorities and involved Portuguese, German and British detectives.

Work crews flattened a 160-square-foot area and dug 2-foot-deep holes. Additional holes were dug closer to the reservoir, which is less than half full because of a drought.

German prosecutor Christian Wolters said authorities would assess the outcome and may issue a statement as early as next week.

In 2020, German officials named Brueckner, who was in the Algarve in 2007, as a suspect in the toddler’s murder, but he has not been charged and has denied any involvement.

Brueckner is serving a seven-year prison sentence in Germany for raping a 72-year-old woman in Portugal in 2005.

The disappearance of the little girl has gotten worldwide attention, spawning several books and true-crime documentaries.

Police investigators in three countries are still trying to piece together what exactly happened the night Madeleine vanished from her bed on May 3, 2007. She was sharing a room at the Praia da Luz resort with her 2-year-old twin siblings while the children’s parents, Gerry and Kate McCann, had dinner with friends at a nearby restaurant.

Gerry and Kate McCann had left their three children sleeping alone in a vacation apartment when
Madeleine was kidnapped.

When Kate went to check on the kids around 10 p.m. that night, she found a window open and Madeleine gone.

Earlier this month, the McCanns shared a heart-rending tribute to their missing daughter on what would have been her 20th birthday.

“Happy birthday Madeleine! We love you and we’re waiting for you. We’re never going to give up,” they wrote on Facebook.

Madeleine McCann suspect won't be tried for Portugal rape cases

..

German court declines to try jailed Madeleine McCann suspect

in Portugal rape case

By Olivia Land, NYPost

A German court has declined to try a convicted sex offender for a series of alleged rapes in a move that may threaten the investigation into British toddler Madeleine McCann’s mysterious disappearance in Portugal 15 years ago.

The court in Braunschweig threw out several rape and sexual offense charges against Christian Brueckner, who was formally identified last year as a suspect in another case, the mystery of 3-year-old McCann.

Brueckner – who is identified as “Christian B.” in formal documents to accommodate Germany’s strict privacy laws – is currently in prison for the 2005 rape of an elderly woman in Algarve, the same region where Madeleine was staying with her family when she vanished on May 3, 2007.

He was additionally charged last year three counts of aggravated rape and two instances of child sexual abuse that took place in Portugal between Dec. 28, 2000 and June 11, 2017.

On Thursday, however, the regional tribunal ruled that they could not pursue the cases because Brueckner’s last known address was in another German state, The Journal said.

As part of the ruling, the officials also revoked the urgent arrest warrant that was issued for Brueckner last fall.

In a statement to The Journal, Brueckner’s attorney, Friedrich Fuelscher, claimed that the court’s decision means it will also not be able to pursue the “‘Maddie’ case.”

A spokesperson for the court, however, declined to confirm that and stressed that the five charges were separate from the McCann investigation.

“We will continue to investigate in the Maddie case and the accused remains in prison,” prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters told Reuters in an email.

Madeleine McCann was just days away from her fourth birthday when she disappeared from her family’s vacation apartment in Praia da Luz. In June 2020, Wolters speculated that the toddler had been murdered – and that Brueckner was the likely culprit.

“We don’t have the body and no parts of the body, but we have enough evidence to say our suspect killed Madeleine McCann,” he explained during a bombshell appearance on Australia’s 60 Minutes.

Brueckner has denied any knowledge of what happened to Madeleine. Last year, he claimed that he was having sex in a camper van at the time the child was abducted.

The update in Brueckner’s case also comes shortly after a DNA test disproved a Polish woman’s allegations that she was the missing tot.

Julia Faustyna, 21, made headlines earlier this year when she made social media posts claiming that she had sufficient evidence to suggest she was Madeleine.

Earlier this week, police in California seized a cell phone tied to Faustyna as the story remains in limbo.

Madeleine’s parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, approved the DNA test but have since refused to comment on the situation.

Late last month, however, the couple was said to be “delighted” at the news that the UK’s Metropolitan Police was set to receive $370,000 to aid in the ongoing search.

“It gives fresh hope,” a source close to the case said of the cash injection.

Girl who could be Madeleine McCann, submits DNA samples - could be Livia Schepp

Woman claiming to be Madeleine McCann submits DNA test

By News.com.au
March 13, 2023 10:52am  Updated

A Polish woman who believes she could be Madeleine McCann has submitted samples for forensic testing to determine if she is the missing Brit.

Julia Faustyna, who also goes by Julia Wendell, has been claiming on Instagram and TikTok that she may be the child – who disappeared from a family holiday in Portugal in 2007 – due to similarities in their age and appearance.

She has amassed tens of thousands of followers on both platforms as a result, posting under the handle @iammadeleinemccann.

Julia Wendell submitted samples for three different forensic examinations that will outline her DNA sequence.
Instagram/@iammadeleinemccan

The 21-year-old has submitted samples for three different forensic examinations that will outline her DNA sequence, along with a 23andMe-style genetic test to establish her ancestry, private investigator Dr. Fia Johansson told RadarOnline.com.

“If the results come back that she’s British or from that area then we are going to continue our investigation into Madeleine McCann and communicate with the detectives in Portugal,” said Dr. Johansson, who relocated Wendell from Poland to a safe house in the United States after a series of death threats.

“We have a lot of evidence right now that shows Julia was definitely trafficked to Poland from another country by an international sex trafficking group.”

“We are still conducting an investigation but Julia is definitely not the biological daughter of her parents in Poland.”

If Wendell’s ancestry comes from the same region as Madeleine’s parents, Gerry and Kate McCann, Dr. Johansson said she will immediately send the DNA sequence to Portuguese investigators for comparison.

Julia Wendell – who has said she does not “remember most of my childhood” – previously said that Madeleine’s parents have agreed to a DNA test.

She claims that details of her childhood don’t add up, leading her to believe that she was abducted as a toddler and that she has a spot in her right eye and a beauty mark on her cheek similar to Madeleine’s.

Earlier this month, however, Pawel Noga from the Provincial Police Headquarters in Wroclaw told Polish news outlet Gazeta that authorities have “ruled out” Wendell’s version of events to be “true”, according to an English translation of the outlet’s report.

The TikToks show off similarities between Wendell and Madeleine McCann.

In a 15-minute video posted to her Instagram, Wendell and her “spokesperson”, psychic medium, and private investigator, Dr. Johansson, refuted the officers’ statement.

Dr. Johansson said that “no police officers in Poland said that she (Julia) or she is not Madeleine McCann” and it was “all lies.”

She said the pair also intended to “force” Wendell’s mother to submit to a DNA test.

Internet users have also speculated that Wendell could be Swiss girl Livia Schepp, who disappeared in 2011 with her twin Alessia, aged six.

“Julia is very open to the idea she may indeed be another missing child and they are hoping to carry out a DNA test with her family,” Dr. Johansson recently told The Sun.

“I’ve spoken to her about this and she is open to the fact she could be any missing child out there – not just Madeleine. Julia just wants to know the truth about who she is.”

“One of the reasons she made the connection to Madeleine is because one of the suspects in Madeleine’s case looks very much like a man who she says abused her as a child.”

“But the same man could be connected to Madeleine and other missing children – this is how predators and traffickers work.”

“Julia has taken a DNA test and we are investigating if it’s possible to check her DNA with that of missing Livia.”

“We are investigating all possibilities at this stage.”

Wendell’s family in Poland, meanwhile, have spoken of their “devastation” at her claims.

“For us as a family, it is obvious that Julia is our daughter, granddaughter, sister, niece, cousin, and step-niece. We have memories, we have pictures,” the family said in a Facebook statement, via Polish missing persons organization Missing Years Ago.

“Julia also has these photos, because she took them from the family home with the birth certificate, as well as numerous hospital discharges.”

“We always tried to understand all situations that happened with Julia. Numerous therapies, medicines, psychologists, and psychiatrists – Julia had it all guaranteed. She wasn’t left alone.”

“Threats to our address from Julia, her lies and manipulations, activity on the internet. We’ve seen it all and we’ve tried to prevent it, to explain, we’ve asked her to stop.”

Internet users have also speculated that Wendell could be Swiss girl Livia Schepp, who disappeared in 2011 with her twin.
Instagram/@iammadeleinemccan

The family hinted at Ms. Wendell’s motivations, writing that she “always wanted to be popular.”

But, Dr. Johansson urged the family to consider a DNA test, and to “get in touch with us directly so we can discuss the case with them rather than releasing statements online.”

“Some of the information Julia has told us and the evidence we’ve seen doesn’t match what the family are saying so we would like to talk about it directly with them,” she told The Sun.

“It seems suspicious to me that Julia’s family will not take a test, which could clear these claims up very quickly.”

Madeleine McCann Story gets weirder and weirder

Family of woman claiming to be Madeleine McCann ‘refuse

to take DNA test’ to rule out possibility she’s missing Brit

Emma Parry, The Sun
Published: 17:03, 22 Feb 2023. Updated: 17:13, 22 Feb 2023

THE family of the young woman who claims to be Madeleine McCann are refusing to take a DNA test to rule out the possibility she is the missing youngster, it has been claimed.

Julia Wandelt, 21, from Poland, has gone viral after suggesting that she may be Maddie, who disappeared in 2007.

Julia Wandelt believes she may be missing Madeleine McCann

Julia is now being investigated and represented by Dr. Fia Johansson, a psychologist, medium and private detective, who says she is doing her best to resolve the case quickly and not bring unnecessary distress to the McCann family.

Fia says she is trying to persuade Julia’s Polish family to provide a DNA test to solve any mystery over the girl’s parentage but so far they have flatly refused.

She is now urging one of Julia's family members to agree to do a test, which could answer Julia's questions about their family background instantly.

Madeleine went missing on May 3, 2007. Credit: AP

"We want to be very respectful to the McCann family, and respect the privacy of them and their kids while we don't know exactly who Julia is," Fia said.

"My feeling is that we need to force the mother or a member of Julia's family to take the DNA test rather than disrupt the peace of Kate and Garry, which is not necessary.

"If a current family member will take a DNA test we could solve this. But they are refusing to.

"I have been personally talking to Julia's mother and told her we will make her safe and secure in any way she needs but she is still refusing to take the test. She claims she has Julia's birth certificate but our worry is that you can easily forge this."

Julia has been sharing her story on social media where she reveals the reasons that have led her to believe that she is Madeleine.

She claims to have been a victim of sexual abuse when she was young and says that a German paedophile, who was a suspect in the Madeleine McCann case, was her abuser.

Julia also points out she has moles in similar positions to Madeleine and also showed that she had a marking in her eye, similar to Madeleine's coloboma, which means her pupil is a different shape.

Madeleine's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann have never given up hope of finding their daughter.

But sources earlier told The Sun that Julia’s claims may be hurting the family. They said: “It causes unnecessary pain for Kate and Gerry. So many false claims have been made over the years and they don’t need any more."

Fia, who has worked with law enforcement in the US in the past as a psychic detective and private investigator, says she understands the family have to protect themselves from unverified claims and wants to respect their privacy.

Known as the Persian Medium, Fia has previously told The Sun how she has helped solve murders, find terrorists and even helped a member of the Royal Family escape a blackmail plot.

She says she has been involved in the official Madeleine McCann investigation since 2019, when she made a psychic "prediction" that Madeleine was still alive.

However, she says she is keeping an open mind on Julia's case and is trying to ascertain the facts.

"I made a prediction in 2019 that Madeleine was alive and loved music and will end up finding her identity by herself," Fia said.

"So all of a sudden I thought with this case there seemed to be a lot of matches, Julia is a talented musician she plays piano. Also, the town she is living in is very close by to Germany.

"At this moment I can't answer whether this is Madeleine or not. But a lot of things are following my own prediction and I can't ignore that."

Fia said she became involved with Julia after a detective got in touch with her about her case.

"When Julia started to go viral through Instagram my investigation team had some conversations with a detective who was officially involved with the case and who I have been in touch with since 2019," she said.

"They said they didn't know if Julia was legitimate or not yet but that it was worth looking into and as I am a psychologist, human behaviorist and a researcher and had worked on the Madeleine McCann case they thought I could help and work out why this person thinks she is Madeleine McCann.

"I immediately sent two of my team to Poland and look into the situation and figure out exactly who she is and what she is doing."

The disappearance of Madeleine in 2007 remains one of the biggest unsolved cases in British history. The youngster was only three when she vanished from her family's holiday home in Portugal.

Her parents had left her sleeping with her siblings while they had dinner at the hotel's restaurant - before realising at about 10pm that she was missing.

The couple have since devoted their lives to finding the little girl - now left with Madeleine's "Cuddle Cat" as one of the last reminders of their daughter.

More than £12million has been poured into the investigation for her since 2007.

Madeleine McCann - Woman claims to be the missing girl, wants DNA test

..

Madeleine McCann’s parents agree to DNA-test woman

claiming to be their daughter

By Olivia Land
February 21, 2023 10:19am  Updated

Missing British child Madeleine McCann’s parents have agreed to a DNA test for a Polish woman who believes she’s their daughter — though even representatives for the young woman making the stunning claims admit that her background is “messy.”

Gerry and Kate McCann, whose 3-year-old daughter, Madeleine, disappeared on vacation in Portugal over 15 years ago, are following up on Julia Faustyna’s claims that she is the kidnapped toddler, a source told the Daily Beast this week.

Faustyna, 21, became an internet sensation this month after she started posting on social media under the handle @iammadeleinemccann. Earlier this week, she updated her Instagram bio with “Kate and Gerry McCann agreed for DNA test!”

In one of her first Instagram posts, Faustyna writes that she does not remember most of her early life except “holidays in a hot place where was [a] beach and White or very light couloured [sic] buildings with apartaments [sic].”

Many of Faustyna’s posts document apparent physical similarities between herself and Madeleine, including a distinctive brown smudge on both girls’ right irises.

“I have similar eyes, shape of face, ears, lips, I had the gap between the teeths [as Madeleine],” she wrote in one post alongside several photos of both herself and the missing tot.

Julia Faustyna claims that she is kidnapped British toddler Madeleine McCann.

Kate and Gerry McCann are reportedly submitting DNA to determine Faustyna’s identity.

“I need to know the truth. I need [a] dna test and I need to talk with Madeleine’s parents. Help me!”

In other posts, Faustyna points out perceived resemblances between herself and Gerry and Kate McCann.

Madeleine, of Leicestershire, was last seen sleeping alongside her infant siblings in her family’s Praia de Luz vacation rental on May 3, 2007. When Kate McCann checked on her children around 10 p.m., she found the bedroom door and window open and Madeleine gone.

In her posts, Faustyna also shared the police sketch of the man multiple witnesses saw carrying a child in the resort the night Madeleine disappeared.

I recognise this person..it looks very similar to my abbuser [sic],” she wrote.

While it is unclear what kind of abuse Faustyna may have suffered, she makes references in her posts to being victimized by a “German pedophile.”

News that the McCanns are reportedly pursuing Faustyna’s claims, however, comes amid growing concern about the young woman’s mental state.

Faustyna says she and Madeleine have the same smudge on their right iris.

Smudges in the iris of an eye, from my experience, are caused by trauma. It has always bothered me that Madeleine had one at such an early age. Again, from my experience, smudges tend to disappear over time as the trauma is dealt with. Here, Julia's smudge appears at 6 o'clock, while Madeleine's is about 7 o'clock. Do smudges move?

“[Julia’s] mental health at this moment is not good,” spokesperson Dr. Fia Johansson, also known as “Persian Medium,” shared in a video update to Faustyna’s Instagram profile on Monday.

“She needs help,” Johansson continued, noting that Faustyna’s background is “challenging and messy.”

If Julia is Madeleine, there is no question that her mental health would be extremely vulnerable. Her eyes in the adult picture at the top belie a lot of pain and sadness, and possibly drug use, which would not be a surprise.

Johansson did not reply to The Post’s request for a comment. A representative for Gerry and Kate McCann could also not be immediately reached.

Christian Brückner was identified as a suspect in the McCann case last spring. ITALIAN CARABINIERI PRESS OFFICE

Though local authorities initially suspected Gerry and Kate of killing their daughter and disposing of her body, investigators later surmised that Madeleine was possibly kidnapped by German sex offender Christian Brückner.

Authorities reportedly are still investigating Brückner, 45, who was formally identified as a suspect in the McCann case in April 2022.

According to the Daily Beast, Brückner was a handyman in Praia de Luz at the time of Madeleine’s disappearance. He is serving a seven-year sentence for raping a 72-year-old woman at the resort in September 2005.

“We welcome the news that the Portuguese authorities have declared a German man an ‘arguido’ [suspect] in relation to the disappearance of our beloved daughter Madeleine,” the McCanns wrote on their website following Brückner’s official identification last year.

“Even though the possibility may be slim, we have not given up hope that Madeleine is still alive and we will be reunited with her.”
