Former Canada world junior players plead not guilty in sex assault trial

Five former members of Canada’s world junior hockey team have pleaded not guilty in their sexual assault trial that began Tuesday.

Dillon Dube, Carter Hart, Michael McLeod, Cal Foote and Alex Formenton were charged with sexual assault early last year in connection to an alleged group sexual assault in London, Ont., after a Hockey Canada gala event in 2018. McLeod is facing an additional charge of being a party to the offence of sexual assault.

The players, all dressed in dark suits, entered their pleas one by one in a packed London courtroom Tuesday morning. Superior Court Justice Maria Carroccia will preside over the trial, which is expected to unfold over several weeks, beginning with jury selection April 22.

News of the event first broke in May 2022 after TSN reported Hockey Canada had settled a civil lawsuit with the female complainant.

That report triggered a series of events, with intense scrutiny focused on Hockey Canada that eventually led the entire board and leadership team to resign.

London Police, which closed an initial investigation without charges in 2019, would reopen the case three years later and lay charges.

Chief Thai Truong apologized to the victim in February 2024, saying “it shouldn’t take years and years for us to arrive at the outcome of today.”

He and other officers offered few details, saying they could not compromise the ongoing legal case.

A court ban prevents the release of any information that could identify the complainant, whose version of what happened in 2018 will be tested in front of the defendants in court.

Shannon Sharpe accused of rape in $50 million lawsuit after ‘rocky consensual relationship’

Hall of Fame tight end Shannon Sharpe has been accused of rape by a woman under the pseudonym “Jane Doe” in a 13-page, $50 million civil lawsuit filed Sunday and obtained by The Post.

The complaint, filed in a Nevada state court, alleges the ESPN personality committed assault, sexual assault, battery, sexual battery and engaged in the intentional infliction of emotional distress during a “rocky consensual relationship” that lasted nearly two years with a woman more than thirty years younger than him.

The plaintiff alleges Sharpe brutally sexually assaulted her several times at the end of 2024 and the beginning of 2025.

The complaint accuses Sharpe of threatening to kill her multiple times, being “manipulating and controlling” and “repeatedly threatening to brutally choke and violently slap her.”

Sharpe denied all allegations of coercion or misconduct in a statement through his counsel to The Post on Monday.

“One time specifically, he was yelling at her while there was a firearm visible in his room,” the complaint states. “Terrified for her safety, Plaintiff tried sharing her location with friends from her iPhone — just in case. But Sharpe saw her doing this. The moment he realized what she was doing, he grabbed her by the neck and told her ‘If you ever do that again, I will f–king kill you.'”

The complaint claims that Sharpe recorded the two involved in sexual acts together without her knowledge and then shared those videos with his friends and associates without her knowledge or permission.

The plaintiff is not the woman that Sharpe accidentally shared audio of on an Instagram livestream “on accident” while having sex in September 2024, the complaint states.

However, the plaintiff claims she began to end the relationship after that incident — because he “cheated” when she thought they were in an exclusive relationship — and Sharpe relentlessly pursued her afterwards.

“A woman can say ‘yes’ to consensual sexual relations with a man ninety-nine times, but
when she says ‘no’ even once, that ‘no’ means no,” the first page of the complaint reads.

“Defendant Shannon Sharpe, a man who is accustomed to getting what he wants, completely fails to understand this basic concept. After many months of manipulating and controlling Plaintiff — a woman more than thirty years younger than he — and repeatedly threatening to brutally choke and violently slap her, Sharpe refused to accept the answer no and raped Plaintiff, despite her sobbing and repeated screams of ‘no.’”

The plaintiff and Sharpe first met at a Los Angeles gym in early 2023, and their first conversation took place at the gym when she was 20, according to the complaint, which states that Sharpe offered to buy her “fake tits” if she won a fitness challenge that he proposed.

The civil lawsuit states that the woman visited Sharpe at his Beverly Glen mansion on multiple occassions and that he would physically, emotionally and psychologically control her.

“This cycle of control, fear, and submission became routine,” the complaint states. “Yelling at her, controlling her, forcibly grabbing her by the neck when he got upset, saying he was going to ‘kill her,’ and asserting dominance became the norm.

Sharpe was sued a day before Front Office Sports reported that he is expected to sign a deal for his “Club Shay Shay” podcast that would exceed $100 million after his contract with Colin Cowherd’s The Volume podcast network expired recently.

Sharpe, who appeared on ESPN’s “First Take” on Monday, has yet to publicly address the lawsuit as of Monday afternoon.

“Mr. Sharpe categorically denies all allegations of coercion or misconduct – especially the gross lie of “’rape’ — and will not submit to what he sees as an egregious attempt at blackmail,” Lanny J. Davis, who is representing Sharpe, said in the statement. “He stands firmly by the truth and is prepared to fight these false claims vigorously in court. He looks forward to vindication through due process and a judgment based on the facts and the law.”

The woman is represented by Micah Nash and Tony Buzbee.

Buzbee represented more than 20 women who sued Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson, beginning in early 2021, alleging sexual assault and misconduct.

Watson served an 11-game suspension from the NFL in 2022 and was required to pay a fine and undergo treatment.

The three-time Pro Bowler settled 23 of the 24 lawsuits filed against him.

The Perverted Lives of the Rich and Famous > BackStreet Boys' Nick Carter sued again; Billionaire Frank Stronach - more sex assault charges; New Pornographers surprised at pornographer drummer

Nick Carter is facing new sexual assault allegations in a lawsuit that claims he sexually assaulted a woman and gave her a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that led to cervical cancer.

In the lawsuit, filed last week in Nevada, a woman named Laura Penly claims that she met Carter in late 2004 when she was 19 years old and he was in his mid-20s and they began having a consensual sexual relationship when they “would see each other approximately every few weeks” when she visited Los Angeles, according to documents obtained by People.

Penly alleges that she had asked the Backstreet Boys singer to wear a condom and he “refused,” telling her that he was “clean” from STIs, according to her filing. (Global News has not independently viewed the legal documents.)

According to the lawsuit, Penly says that prior to Carter, now 45, she never had unprotected sex with anyone.

She alleges that in early 2005, she went to Carter’s apartment but only wanted to watch a movie with him. Her lawsuit alleges that Carter “told her no because the only reason she was there was to have sex.”

The lawsuit alleges that the sexual assault “forcefully” happened on his bed, despite Penly “saying ‘no’ multiple times.”

Carter allegedly “failed to use protection to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted infections.”

Penly says she was told to keep the assault a secret since no one would believe her anyway. But a few months later, Carter allegedly apologized and she went to see him again where she alleges she was sexually assaulted for a second time, according to the lawsuit.

The woman alleges that Carter “infected plaintiff with various sexually transmitted diseases, including the human papillomavirus (commonly known as HPV), a sexually transmitted infection known to cause health problems such as cervical cancer.”

Penly allegedly tested positive for chlamydia and gonorrhea, as well as cancerous cells following a doctor’s visit in July 2005.

By August 2005, Penly “was diagnosed with Stage 2 cervical cancer and had to undergo numerous treatments,” according to the suit.

Penly claims she dealt with “severe emotional distress, physical anguish, medical issues, intimacy issues, and other complex trauma” following the diagnosis and alleged assault.

She is seeking damages in excess of $15,000 and is demanding a jury trial.

“It takes profound courage and resilience for survivors of sexual assault to publicly come forward in pursuit of justice, particularly in the music industry that has long fostered a pervasive environment of sexual exploitation,” Penly’s lawyer, Gianna N. Elliot, said in a statement.

“Carter used his power, status, and fame to sexually abuse and assault multiple young women and avoid any accountability. This lawsuit aims to change that pattern,” Elliot continued.

“We hope that Laura receives the justice she rightfully deserves and that this lawsuit serves as a catalyst, empowering other survivors to raise their voices and hold their abusers to account,” Elliot concluded.

Carter has denied Penly’s accusations, which his lawyers, Liane K. Wakayama and Dale Hayes, Jr, called “nonsense from the gang of conspirators and their lawyers who continue to abuse the justice system to try to ruin Nick Carter.”

“It’s drawn from the same predictable playbook — lie in wait for decades until Mr. Carter is celebrating a professional milestone, then hide behind litigation privilege to make utterly false claims in an attempt to inflict maximum damage on Nick and his family,” his lawyers said in a statement.

Carter’s lawyers claim that the singer doesn’t recall ever meeting Penly.

“He certainly never had any romantic or sexual relationship with her. Ever,” they said.

Penly’s lawsuit marks the fourth sexual assault lawsuit filed against Carter.

In August 2023, an unnamed Pennsylvania woman filed a lawsuit in Clark County, Nev., alleging that the singer raped her when she was 15 years old in 2003.

In the legal filing, the woman, identified only as A.R., claimed Carter sexually assaulted her multiple times in 2003, when Carter was 22 and 23 years old. She alleged Carter raped her in separate instances onboard a yacht and a boat in Florida, and sexually assaulted her on a bus.

In one instance, A.R. claimed Carter provided her drugs and alcohol at a party onboard a boat in October 2003. After she became drunk, A.R. alleged Carter took her to a cabin where he allowed three other men to watch him rape her.

A.R. also claimed she contracted HPV from Carter.

She sued him for sexual battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress and negligent infliction of emotional distress.

She was the third woman to file a lawsuit of this nature against the Backstreet Boys star.

Two other women, Shannon Ruth and Melissa Schuman, have also accused Carter of rape and sexual assault. Ruth said Carter raped her when she was 17 years old.

In February 2023, Carter filed a countersuit and denied both women’s claims. He called Ruth and Schuman “opportunists” who took advantage of the #MeToo movement to “defame and vilify” him for financial gain.

As part of earlier lawsuits, Ruth said Carter invited her onto a tour bus after a concert in Tacoma, Wash., when she was 17 years old. She claimed Carter gave her alcohol and forced her to perform oral sex before he raped her. Ruth also alleged that she contracted HPV from Carter.

In 2017, Schuman, a former member of the girl group Dream, accused Carter of sexually assaulting her when she was 18.

Schuman told the court Carter sexually assaulted and raped her at his Santa Monica, Calif., apartment in 2003 after giving her a sedative. At the time, Carter (then 22) and Schuman (then 18) were co-workers filming the thriller movie The Hollow.

In August 2024, Carter filed a $2.5-million countersuit against Schuman for defamation and interference with existing and prospective business contracts after she filed a suit against him for sexual assault and battery in April 2023.

Through his lawyers, Carter said Schuman’s lawsuit caused him to lose $2.5 million in business partnership deals with MeUndies, VRBO, Roblox and The Children’s Place, according to a Rolling Stone report. Carter also said ticket sales for his shows had slowed as a result of the lawsuit, leading to less profit.

Carter’s countersuit maintained he had been “falsely accused” of wrongdoing by Schuman, who has a “thirst for Internet relevance.” His lawsuit claimed Carter and Schuman had a “flirtatious” dynamic prior to having consensual sex in 2003.

Carter has never faced any criminal charges in relation to these allegations.

Frank Stronach committed to stand trial after preliminary inquiry into two charges

An Ontario court has committed billionaire businessman Frank Stronach to stand trial on two charges related to two complainants as part of his Toronto sexual assault case.

Ontario Court Justice Jacqueline Freeman made the ruling at the end of a preliminary inquiry that dealt exclusively with those two charges, which court has heard were the only ones eligible for the proceeding.

In total, Stronach – who has denied all allegations against him – will stand trial on 12 charges in Toronto. The trial has not yet been scheduled.

None of the arguments or evidence presented at the preliminary inquiry can be reported at this time because of a standard publication ban meant to preserve the accused’s right to a fair trial.

Stronach, who became one of Canada’s wealthiest people as the founder of auto parts giant Magna, is facing separate charges in York Region after the case was split into two last year.

Peel regional police charged him last year with 18 counts, including sexual assault and indecent assault, involving 13 complainants across Ontario.

Some of the charges date back decades, as far as the 1970s.

He was accompanied by a small group of supporters over the several days of the preliminary inquiry.

Drummer for indie rockers the New Pornographers arrested over child sexual abuse images

Joe Seiders in custody following search of home, vehicle and phone, after allegedly attempting to film child in California restaurant restroom

Joe Seiders, the American drummer with Canadian indie rockers the New Pornographers, has been arrested for possession of child sexual abuse imagery.

A statement made by the sheriff’s office of Riverside county, California, alleged that evidence has implicated Seiders in two incidents. On Monday 7 April, an 11-year-old boy reported that a man attempted to film him in a restroom of a fast food restaurant, and on Wednesday 9 April, police officers received another report from the restaurant, that a man was “entering and exiting the restroom with juvenile males at the business”.

Officers arrested Seiders at the scene, and secured search warrants for his home, vehicle and phone: “Evidence was located implicating him in the two reported incidents, along with additional crimes, including possessing child pornography,” the statement reads. He was also charged with annoying/molesting a child, invasion of privacy, and attempted invasion of privacy.

Seiders is being held in jail with bail set at $1m, and is due in court on 22 April.

The New Pornographers responded with a statement reading: “Everyone in the band is absolutely shocked, horrified, and devastated by the news of the charges against Joe Seiders – and we have immediately severed all ties with him. Our hearts go out to everyone who has been impacted by his actions.”

Right! The New Pornographers - surprised that their drummer is a pornographer! I wonder if they are interested in buying the tropical island I have for sale off the coast of Labrador?

Fronted by AC Newman and the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Neko Case, the band are an enduring presence in North American indie, with a catalogue dating back to 2000 debut album Mass Romantic. One of their former members is Dan Bejar, AKA Destroyer. Their biggest chart success came with 2014 album Brill Bruisers, which reached No 13 in the US charts, after which their long-time drummer Kurt Dahle left and was replaced by Seiders.

As well as touring with the band, Seiders performed on their three most recent studio albums. He has also backed Case as well as artists including John Oates, Juliana Hatfield and Gary Jules, and previously played in the group Beat Club.
