Yet Another Day-Care Worker Charged with Child Sex Abuse

Day care worker from Omaha charged with child sex abuse

By - Associated Press

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Police say a day care worker from Omaha has told investigators that he sexually assaulted as many as eight young girls.

Mark Mays, 24, was arrested Thursday and jailed on suspicion of eight child sexual assault counts. He was charged Friday with one count of first-degree sexual assault of a child, and authorities say more charges could be filed later.

Mays, on Friday, waived his right to a preliminary hearing. His arraignment in Douglas County District Court has not been set.

He is being held in the Douglas County jail on $2 million bond and could not be reached for comment. His public defender, Cathy Saathoff, did not return a phone message left Saturday at her office, which was closed for the weekend.

Omaha detectives with the special victims unit were called to investigate, police said, after other day care workers reported finding Mays in January with a naked 2-year-old girl.

Police said Mays told investigators he had sexual contact with eight girls ranging in age from nearly 2 to 3 years old.

Mays has worked at two child day care centers in Omaha since May, police said. He worked at La Petite Academy from May until August, and Little Hands at Work and Play Daycare from December through Jan. 7.

Police said investigators have contacted the families of all suspected victims. Police continue to investigate whether there are more potential victims.
