"I SMASHED MY COMPUTER LAST NIGHT"
WHEN HE HEARS WHAT WE KNOW about him, his eyes well up with tears. The middle-aged man dressed in a shirt and sailing jumper leans back in his office chair and glances at the two doors to his office.
"It's just you and me here now?"
"There's another door leading to a colleague's office that doesn't close tight. I don't think there's anyone in there," he replies in a low voice.
"We're sitting on quite a lot of information about people who we believe have downloaded child sexual abuse material, and your name came up."
"I see."
The dog by his feet lazily wags its tail. On the narrow table separating us lie transcripts of images and lists of files containing sexualised images of young children. According to VG's material, these are files this man has downloaded.
He folds his arms tightly across his chest.
"I don't know what to say. You're a journalist. I have no idea how this will look when you're done with me. If this gets out, my life is over. How on earth did you find out all this about me?"
FOR TEN MONTHS VG HAS BEEN MAPPING AND IDENTIFYING NORWEGIANS who are believed to have download images and videos showing child sexual abuse. The man sitting across the table from us is one of them.
The material we are now publishing has been uncovered by VG's Einar Otto Stangvik, one of Norway's leading data analysts. Two years ago he exposed a Conservative Party politician who had hacked his way into and stolen private images young girls had taken of themselves.
VG holds detailed information on 78 Norwegians who, according to our data, have spent time, money and resources on increasing the demand for videos showing children being abused.
We know who they are, where they live – and what was downloaded to user names, computers and IP addresses that can be traced back to them.
The data material in our possession is highly comprehensive. Apart from the police, few others have as full an overview of individuals believed to have actively downloaded child sexual abuse images in Norway.
The material consists of a total of 36 million lines of data, which is equivalent to a novel consisting of one million pages.
Exposing downloaders of this type of abuse is an extremely demanding task.
Some downloaders hide behind anonymous user names, secret e-mail accounts and multiple IP addresses.
But we found them all the same.
They are all men.
VG Helg has contacted ten of them.
