Cobb Co., Republican chairman pleads guilty to CSA and gets 30 years
MARIETTA, GA — Former Cobb County Republican Party Chairman Joe Dendy pleaded guilty Friday to child molestation charges and was given a life sentence, with 30 years to be served in prison.
Under a deal reached with prosecutors, Dendy, 72, pleaded guilty to multiple sexual offenses against two boys between 2004 and 2011.
Joe Dendy, the former chair of the Cobb Republican Party, raises his hand before testifying that he understood the charges against him and was pleading guilty of his own will. Though attorneys on both sides were scheduled to argue over motions filed in Dendy's case, a deal was reached that saw the 72-year-old plea guilty to all 13 charges against him, ranging from aggravated child molestation to cruelty to children.
Now that's a plea deal I can live with!
GOP leaders: Joe Dendy plea not reflective of our party.
Illinois Governor signs legislation removing statutes of limitations on sexual abuse crimes
by Lindsay Offutt
Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner signed SB 189 on Friday removing the statutes of limitations on certain sexual abuse crimes. The legislation amends chapter 38, sections 3-6, of the Illinois Criminal Code to eliminate a time guard for reporting felony sex crimes and sex crimes against children. Under the previous code a victim of these sex crimes had to report the crime within 20 years of reaching age 18. The statute now reads:
When the victim is under 18 years of age at the time of the offense, a prosecution for criminal sexual assault, aggravated criminal sexual assault, predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, aggravated criminal sexual abuse, or felony criminal sexual abuse may be commenced at any time when corroborating physical evidence is available or an individual who is required to report an alleged or suspected commission of any of these offenses under the Abused and Neglected Child Reporting Act fails to do so.
The stricken language above expands the time period and circumstances under which a prosecution for sex crimes can commence. Some of the crimes covered by the bill include child pornography, solicitation for a juvenile prostitute, promoting juvenile prostitution, criminal sexual assault, and sexual conduct toward minors. The legislation takes immediate effect.
Rape and other sex crimes are frequent issues in the international legal community and have made headlines in the past several months.
In June, Japan's lower legislative house approved changes to Japan's century-old rape laws that would expand the definition of rape, lengthen prison sentences to five years and allow prosecutions to occur in instances where a victim did not press charges.
In May Australia announced plans to decrease child sex trafficking by prohibiting registered sex offenders from traveling overseas.
The same day, the US Supreme Court ruled that the federal age of consent was 16.
Earlier the same month, the India Supreme Court upheld the death penalty in the case of a gang rape which led to the victim's death.
In July 2016, the German parliament unanimously passed a law expanding the definition of sex crimes, making any form of "nonsensical sexual contact" a crime.
Ex-preschool teacher sentenced for
sexually abusing 3-year-old's
CHICAGO -- A 13-year prison sentence has been handed a former Chicago preschool teacher found guilty of inappropriately touching two 3-year-old students during nap-time and in a bathroom.
Jian Feng (who, apparently, is male) was found guilty Thursday in Cook County Circuit Court of predatory criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal sexual abuse.
Judge William Lacy sentenced the 27-year-old Feng to an additional three years in prison for the sexual abuse, to be served consecutively to the 13-year sentence.
Prosecutors say surveillance video in 2014 captured Feng and the child walking in and out of a bathroom at the school. Feng admitted to inappropriately touching the girl. He said his brain made him do it.
In a second incident that occurred in January 2015, he touched a girl while she was lying down for a nap.
