Iran charges two actresses for not wearing hijab
Al Jazeera, April 24, 2023:
Tehran, Iran – Two renowned actresses in Iran have been charged for not wearing headscarves, as authorities intensify efforts to crack down on people violating the country’s mandatory hijab laws.
Iranian state media reported on Tuesday that Tehran police have referred Katayoun Riahi and Pantea Bahram to the judiciary, accused of “the crime of removing their hijab in public and publishing its images in the virtual space”.
The well-known actresses could potentially face fines or prison terms if prosecuted.
Last week, photos of 53-year-old Bahram posing without a headscarf at a film screening went viral.
The 61-year-old Riahi, another veteran actress, was previously arrested in November on suspicion of “collusion against national security and propaganda against the establishment” after she became the first of her peers to post an image of herself online without a headscarf in support of nationwide protests that erupted in September.
The months-long protests began after Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman, died following her arrest by the country’s so-called “morality police” for allegedly not adhering to the country’s hijab laws, which were adopted shortly after the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
It was actually for wearing her hijab incorrectly!
During the protests, several other high-profile actresses, including Taraneh Alidoosti, took off their headscarves in solidarity and were subsequently arrested, prompting support from abroad.
A growing number of women across Iran have abandoned their mandatory hijabs since the protests, with streets and public places in Tehran and elsewhere increasingly seeing women without headscarves.
The authorities had largely refrained from cracking down on the women in public in recent months, and the green and white vans of the morality police have also been taken off the streets, but a notable shift has taken place this month.
Police chief Ahmadreza Radan, appointed by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in January amid speculations about his predecessor’s shortcomings during the protests, has promised to “seriously” deal with people violating hijab rules that are central to the Iranian government’s ideology……
Like most devout Muslim men, they like to keep their women largely invisible.

These “love jihad” incidents stem from supremacist assumptions. Muslim women are forbidden to marry non-Muslim men: “Do not marry idolatresses until they believe, for indeed, a believing slave woman is better than an idolatress, even though she pleases you. And do not give your daughters in marriage to idolaters until they believe, for indeed, a believing slave is better than an idolater, even though he pleases you. These people invite you to the fire, and Allah invites you to the garden, and to forgiveness by his grace, and explains his signs to mankind so that perhaps they will remember.” (Qur’an 2:221)

Gujarat: Kamu Sheikh, Sadiq, Ramzan, and two others allegedly murder Shaista
for being in love with Brijesh; Hindu boy seeks probe
OpIndia, April 25, 2023:
In a shocking case reported from the Navsari City of Gujarat, Mohammed Kamu Sheikh, Sadiq Mohammed Sheikh, Ramzan Sindhi, Siddiqi Sheikh, and Shoaib Sheikh have been accused of allegedly murdering a girl named Shaista. Shaista was in love with a Hindu boy named Brijesh and this is reportedly the reason the accused persons are said to have killed her.
According to the Navbharat Times, the Gujarat Police has received a complaint against the family members of Shaista. The complaint was registered by Brijesh, who alleged that the girl was brutally abused and beaten to death for falling in love with a Hindu boy. Brijesh also said that the family members secretly buried the dead body and tried to conceal the matter. He has demanded an investigation into the case and also a post-mortem of the dead body.
Brijesh and Shaista were in a romantic relationship. But the family members of Shaista were opposed to their relationship. They also had issued threats to Brijesh and had asked him to stay away from her….
According to Brijesh, Shaista was last seen on April 20 and after that, she was murdered. He has filed a complaint against five of her family members named Mohammed Kamu Sheikh, Sadiq Mohammed Sheikh, Ramzan Sindhi, Siddiqi Sheikh, and Shoaib Sheikh, and has demanded a post-mortem of the dead body.
Apart from Brijesh’s police complaint, it has also come to the fore that some notorious accused are also involved in the incident. One of them also runs a gambling den. Brijesh says that there are more persons involved in the crime. He also added that there is a threat to life as well. However, the father of Shaista has denied all the allegations and has said that she had committed suicide and also left a note before allegedly taking the extreme step. The police, however, are investigating the case from all angles.
Honour killing: Man burns wife alive in Pakistan’s Punjab province
Another was raped, then attacked with acid
PTI, April 26, 2023
A husband allegedly burnt his estranged wife alive in a case of so-called ”honour killing” while another woman came under acid attack after being raped in Punjab province of Pakistan, police said on Wednesday.
In the first incident, suspect Tariq allegedly burnt his 40-year-old wife Shazia for what he called ”disgracing the family’s honour” in Cheechawatni district, some 209 kms from Lahore, on Tuesday, police said.
Police official Ejaz Aslam said that Shazia had left Tariq a year ago after developing differences over domestic issues and started living with her parents’ house. Aslam said Tariq suspected that Shazia had relations with a man of his locality and on Tuesday he visited his in-laws and doused Shazia with petrol and set her ablaze and fled.
His action was apparently based on mere suspicions! This is justified in the Quran by Mohammed himself.
She was taken to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival. She has left behind two daughters and four sons.
Police registered a case against Tariq and arrested him.
In a separate incident, two men threw acid on a married woman after raping her in Okara district, some 130kms from Lahore, on Tuesday.
Police officer Jahanzeb Wattoo said that main suspect Rizwan wanted to develop relations with Shahida Bibi, 30, but she refused.
On Tuesday, Rizwan along with his accomplice abducted her at gun point on her way to home and raped her at a deserted place. The suspects later threw acid on her face….
Islamic madness at its finest! This woman survived the attack but will never be the same again. I guess that's the point.

Pakistan: Muslim burns his wife alive for ‘disgracing the family’s honor’

In the Qur’an, a mysterious figure, known as Khidr in Islamic tradition, kills a boy in an apparently random and gratuitous attack. He then explains: “And as for the boy, his parents were believers, and we feared that he would overburden them by transgression and disbelief. So we intended that their Lord should substitute for them one better than him in purity and nearer to mercy.” (18:80-81)
And according to Islamic law, “retaliation is obligatory against anyone who kills a human being purely intentionally and without right.” However, “not subject to retaliation” is “a father or mother (or their fathers or mothers) for killing their offspring, or offspring’s offspring.” (Reliance of the Traveller o1.1-2).
Muslims commit 91 percent of honor killings worldwide. The Palestinian Authority gives pardons or suspended sentences for honor murders. Iraqi women have asked for tougher sentences for Islamic honor murderers, who get off lightly now. Syria in 2009 scrapped a law limiting the length of sentences for honor killings, but “the new law says a man can still benefit from extenuating circumstances in crimes of passion or honour ‘provided he serves a prison term of no less than two years in the case of killing.’” And in 2003 the Jordanian Parliament voted down on Islamic grounds a provision designed to stiffen penalties for honor killings. Al-Jazeera reported that “Islamists and conservatives said the laws violated religious traditions and would destroy families and values.”
