Tulsa man waives preliminary hearing in child sexual abuse-murder case
A Tulsa man charged with sexual abusing and killing his girlfriend’s 16-month-old daughter waived his right to a preliminary hearing Thursday, Tulsa County District Court records indicate.
Cody Alan Johnson, 30, waived his right to the hearing on four counts pertaining to Sawyer Paige Jefferson, who died in a hospital Dec. 5.
Special Judge James Keely directed Johnson to return to court June 6 to be arraigned on charges of child-abuse murder, child neglect and two counts of child sexual abuse, court records show. The arraignment is set before District Judge Sharon Holmes.
Johnson and his girlfriend took Sawyer to the emergency room at Saint Francis Hospital, where she was unresponsive and in cardiac arrest on arrival, an arrest report states.
Doctors placed the child on life support, but she never regained consciousness and later was pronounced dead, police said.
The charges allege the baby had extensive injuries, including brain damage, a detached right retina, extensive bruising to her head, and bleeding from her vagina and anus.
The couple told police that Johnson had been watching the infant at Shadow Mountain Condos in the 6300 block of South 80th East Avenue when she slipped on a toy and fell, Johnson’s arrest report states.
Johnson has previous felony convictions for knowingly concealing/receiving stolen property and driving under the influence, according to court records.
