Child Sexual Abuse USA > Alabama man gets 70 years; N. Dakota man gets off on technicality; Texan gets Life; Massachusetts detective charged with murder, CSA

Alabama man sentenced to 70 years in prison for online sexual exploitation of children

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — A Madison County man has been sentenced on charges related to sexual exploitation of children.

U.S. District Judge Madeline Haikala sentenced Michale Shawun Hill, 43, of Harvest, to 70 years in prison, followed by lifetime supervised release. As part of his sentence, Hill was ordered to pay $40,500 in restitution to the victims of his crimes.

Hill pleaded guilty to distributing child pornography, advertising child pornography and possessing child pornography. Hill is a registered sex offender after being convicted in 2007 for sexual misconduct involving a minor.

“Protecting those most vulnerable from predators is a vital part of keeping society safe,” U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona said. “Our law enforcement partners continue to do outstanding work in identifying and locating these predators and putting them behind bars where they belong.”

According to the plea agreement, in the summer of 2020, Hill was talking with someone he believed was a 14-year-old female but who was actually an undercover agent with the FBI Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force in Jacksonville, Florida.

The communications by Hill were sexual in nature.

FBI Birmingham’s Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force carried out a search warrant at Hill’s home. He admitted he was attracted to girls 15 to 19 years of age. Still, he denied that he had participated in online groups dedicated to the exchange of child sexual abuse material or had downloaded any such material.

However, after further investigation, it was revealed that Hill had distributed child pornography online and had advertised child pornography in a social media group of about 50 other people.

A forensic examination of Hill’s electronic devices revealed over 250 videos and 700 images of child sexual abuse material.

FBI Birmingham’s Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force investigated the case along with FBI Jacksonville (Florida), the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office and the Huntsville Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney R. Leabb White prosecuted the case.

Grand Forks man's child sex abuse conviction tossed

after prosecutors inappropriately presented evidence

The North Dakota Supreme Court ruled David Gaddie didn't get a fair trial because Cass County prosecutors presented statements that alleged he sexually abused the child's mother.

BISMARCK — North Dakota’s top court has thrown out a Grand Forks man’s conviction in a child sex abuse case because prosecutors from Cass County inappropriately showed jurors evidence that alleged he sexually abused the child’s mother.

In a unanimous decision, the North Dakota Supreme Court ruled Wednesday, Aug. 28, that Grand Forks County District Court must vacate guilty verdicts against 41-year-old David Walter Gaddie. A jury found Gaddie guilty on four counts of gross sexual imposition in 2021.

The charges alleged Gaddie sexually abused a child multiple times when she was in second and third grade, according to an affidavit of probable cause. Court documents said the allegations happened between Dec. 1, 2017, and May 31, 2018.

And the child is still a child while the accused is back out on the streets. How is that fair to the victim? Why is it that fairness to the accused ends up costing the victim any form of justice or closure? There must be a better way.

Ex-detective accused of strangling pregnant woman he

abused as teen and trying to make death look like suicide

Matthew Farwell is charged in the Feb. 1, 2021, death in Massachusetts of Sandra Birchmore, who weeks earlier had told him she was pregnant with his child, officials said.

A former Massachusetts police detective accused of strangling a woman who had recently told him she was pregnant with his child and then staging the scene to appear as a suicide has been charged in her 2021 death, federal prosecutors said Wednesday.

They allege that Matthew Farwell killed Sandra Birchmore years after he began grooming and sexually abusing her as a youth in the Stoughton Police Explorers Academy. Farwell was an instructor in the program designed to foster an interest in police work and worked for the Stoughton Police Department from 2012 to 2022.
