"I'm a survivor, not a victim...': Woman bravely speaks out
as uncle jailed for sexually abusing her 40 years ago
Jayne Emsley bravely waived her right to anonymity
A woman has said she is a 'survivor not a victim' after her uncle was jailed for sexually abusing her more than 40 years ago.
Jayne Emsley, 56, bravely waived her right to anonymity as Glynn Whittle begins a four-and-a-half year prison sentence for the vile crime. Whittle, from Huddersfield, attacked Jayne when she was just 12 years old.
Her nightmare began when she was sent to stay with her grandmother while her mum suffered from ill health, Yorkshire Live reports. But what should have been a place of reassurance and comfort for Jayne, became the opposite, robbing her of her childhood and leaving her traumatised.
"We loved going to my grandparents’ farm in the summer. We loved playing in the fields, feeding the animals and going in the tractor to the shops," Jayne, now from Pontefract, said.
"I had never been alone with him before and did not know him well. My mother had 10 brothers and sisters who were spread out across Yorkshire, so it was hard to keep in contact with each other.”
Whittle plied Jayne and her younger sister with alcohol and cigarettes at a working men's club. It was that night sick Whittle attacked Jayne at his girlfriend's house.
Jayne said: "I didn't speak to him until a few days before my birthday where he asked if I had washed. I thought nothing of it. Now, I think he thought he got away with it as the DNA evidence was gone."
Jayne's mum recovered and she and her sister returned home. But the abuse had changed Jayne, making her feel like a 'different person'. It altered her relationship with her mum and she began to cut herself off from her family and friends.
These are typical responses of sexually abused children:
"My relationship with my mum was strained and I began to isolate myself from everyone,” said Jayne. “I would have constant anxiety. He had taken everything from me. My childhood, my innocence and my relationship with my mum.
"I kind of resented her for being ill and having to go to my grandparents, where the assault happened but I felt if I had ever told her, she would not have believed me. In those days, it was all hush hush."
After taking her school exams, Jayne ran away from home and never returned, stopping in bedsits and making ends meet with odd jobs until she met her husband.
"It was hard,” she said. “I slept in a bedsit but I made it work and finally got a job at 19. I had a stable relationship, saved money to buy a house."
Seemingly happy with her life, Jayne told her husband about what had happened and, with her mum and dad passed, tried to tell her wider family but was told to “let it go” and wasn’t believed by everyone.
Even if she was believed, most people have no idea of the kind of damage child sex abuse does to a child, or an adult survivor, or they would never suggest that a victim 'let it go'.
Finally, in 2021, Jayne found the confidence to go to the police and, with the memory of the attack etched into her mind, was able to recount the attack and miniscule details of what happened.
Jayne, a mum of two, said: “I was believed straight away. I could remember the house layout, that day and small details which never left me in all this time. One year later the case was in Magistrates court, then it was a two-year wait in Crown court."
Whittle, now aged 72, of Lucy Lane, Huddersfield, was found guilty of one charge of indecent assault on a child aged under 14 years following a four-day trial. He was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court on August 12 to four and a half years in prison and will be subject to Sex Offender Register requirements.
Now Jayne is hoping seeing her attacker face justice will bring her some closure. She said: "I am pleased he was sentenced and put away for the crime but he should have been in for life. I hope he rots in jail.
Jayne was 'in for life'. Why not the pervert who put her there?
"I came forward and put my name out there, as I believe there could be many more victims he could have done the same thing to and I just hope I have shown that it is OK to come forward.
“West Yorkshire Police have been amazing and very supportive throughout the whole thing. Nothing is going to stop me having nightmares first thing or last thing during the day or night but it feels like a circle has been completed. I am not a victim, I am a survivor."
After the court hearing, Detective Constable Yvonne Brear, of Kirklees Child Safeguarding Unit, said: “Whittle has committed a truly appalling offence, and we welcome the custodial sentence imposed on him.
“I want to praise the victim who came forward in this case whose bravery in making the initial report allowed us to fully investigate Whittle’s offending, making sure he was put before the courts to answer for what he did.
“I hope the sentencing can give the victim some closure, and the case demonstrates to victims of sexual offences that it is never too late to contact us if you have been victim to such abuse."
