Physician at Veterans Affairs Medical Center Arrested for Child Pornography Offenses

For Immediate Release
U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Massachusetts

BOSTON – A physician employed at the Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center in Bedford, Mass. has been arrested and charged with receiving and possessing child sexual abuse material (CSAM).

Sven Knudsen Ljaamo, 70, is charged with one count of receipt of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography. Ljaamo was arrested this morning and, following an initial appearance in federal court in Boston, was ordered detained pending a detention hearing scheduled for April 29, 2025.

According to the charging documents, law enforcement received a CyberTip reporting that over 100 files of suspected CSAM files had allegedly been uploaded to Ljaamo’s Google account. When Ljaamo spoke to investigators, he allegedly admitted to viewing, downloading and saving pornographic material involving female minors. It is further alleged that several CSAM files, along with tens of thousands of pornography files, were found during a review of Ljaamo’s devices, including on a cell phone Ljaamo kept in his office at the VA Medical Center.

The charges of receipt and possession of child pornography each provide for a sentence of up to 20 years in prison. The charge of receipt, specifically, provides for a sentence of at least five years in prison and up to a lifetime of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000. Sentences are imposed by a federal district court judge based upon the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and statutes which govern the determination of a sentence in a criminal case.

United States Attorney Leah B. Foley; James Crowley, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Boston Division; and Christopher Algieri, Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General, Northeast Field Office made the announcement today. Valuable assistance was provided by the Billerica, Lowell and Salem Police Departments. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sandra Gonzalez Sanchez of the Major Crimes Unit is prosecuting the case.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse, launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. Led by the U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the DOJ’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children, as well as identify and rescue victims. For more information about Project Safe Childhood, please visit https://www.justice.gov/psc.

The details contained in the charging documents are allegations. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

Man gets 10 years in prison for sexual assault of child over whom he was in a ‘position of trust’

A man who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a McHenry County child was sentenced to 10 years in prison and ordered to register as a sex offender for life.

Arturo Martinez-Ortiz, 59, pleaded guilty Thursday to one count of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child younger than 13, a Class X felony, records in McHenry County court show. Martinez-Ortiz is listed in court records with a Riverside, California, address, but jail records list him as homeless.

In exchange for his guilty plea, other charges were dropped, including an additional count of predatory criminal sexual assault, indecent solicitation and aggravated criminal sexual abuse, according to the judgment order signed by Judge Tiffany Davis.

The child told a teacher in 2022 that she had been sexually abused, according to a news release from the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Martinez-Ortiz was accused of assaulting the child once at his home in California and once in McHenry County. He held a “position of trust and confidence” with the child, according to a 2nd District Appellate Court appeal of his pretrial detention.

The appeal, citing details presented by prosecutors at his first court appearance after his February 2024 arrest, said that in a phone call with the child’s mother, Martinez-Ortiz “admitted there had been inappropriate contact between him and [the child] in December 2021, although he claimed that [the child] had initiated the physical contact.”

A defense attorney at that hearing had countered that prosecutors “mischaracterized” the call. Martinez-Ortiz “denied any wrongdoing, saying that he believed [the child] accidentally touched his private parts during a game but that he denied the allegations made against him,” according to the appeal.

The child gave graphic descriptions of what Martinez-Ortiz had done to her in an interview at the Children’s Advocacy Center in McHenry County. She said she feared him coming to her home for Christmas and a relative’s birthday, and worried for a younger sibling. The child said Martinez-Ortiz told her “not to tell her parents about the touching and especially not to tell her mother,” according to the appeal.

He is required to serve 85% of his prison term followed by three years to natural life of mandatory supervised release. He will receive credit for 212 days in custody of the county jail, according to the judgment order.

Buford couple found guilty after abuse of 7-year-old girl

By Will Daughtry News Reporter

Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center

A guilty verdict has been returned against a couple for reportedly abusing a 7-year-old girl at a Buford apartment.

The Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office reported on Friday that 25-year-old Javen Tyree Richardson and his girlfriend, 30-year-old Akilah Amin, were both sentenced in the case.

Richardson was convicted on four counts of aggravated child molestation and sentenced to two consecutive life sentences with the first 80 years to serve in prison.

Amin was convicted on one count of influencing a witness and one count of cruelty to children in the second degree. She was sentenced to 20 years with the first seven to serve in prison.

Amin and Richardson also had to register as sex offenders and must have no contact with the victim or her siblings.

“Justice for this young victim begins with the outcome of this trial,” Gwinnett District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson said. “Her family and her loved ones must continue to help her recover and heal.”

It won't help much that she will be in her mid-teens when Amin gets out of jail. She should be forced to live in a different state for the remainder of her sentence.

It’s reported that Richardson sexually abused the girl several times and the victim disclosed the abuse at school. It was revealed in court that Amin then trained the child to change her story and lie to officials about what happened to get Richardson out of jail.

The child told her story from the witness stand in front of the Gwinnett County jury, who returned the guilty verdicts.

Brave kid! Well done, sweetie.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) went to social media last Friday to make a point with a former crew member.

It announced that a cruise ship employee from northern Florida, Theodore “Banks” Pappas, Jr., previously employed by Norwegian Cruise Line on the Norwegian Bliss as the “Head of Broadcast” (broadcast technician), was extradited from Los Angeles on charges related to child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Pappas was arrested on April 4, 2025 at the Port of Los Angeles on CSAM charges after the FDLA began an investigation on July 24, 2023, when agents received a cybertip from the National Center for Missing and Endangered Children (NCMEC) about Pappas’ online account uploading files depicting children being sexually abused.

The FDLA posted on Twitter (X) taunting Pappas: “Welcome back to Florida, Theo! Turns out, even 2,500 miles isn’t far enough to hide from FDLE. Next time, pick a better hiding spot.

The FDLE posted images of FDLE agents escorting Pappas, who was cuffed and shackled, off a jet which flew him from Los Angeles to Jacksonville. The FDLE then transported Pappas to the Nassau County Jail north of Jacksonville, Florida where he had his mugshot taken.

Pappas was booked on fifteen felony charges. The online booking information indicates that he was charged with 13 counts of possession of “child pornography,” although news accounts reported that he is subject to 13 felony counts of possession of “child sexual abuse material.” He is also charged with one count of transmission of CSAM and one count of unlawful use of a two-way communication device, for a total of 15 felony charges.

A bond was set in the total amount of $1,125,030.00, which is comprised or $75,020.00 for each of the 15 felony charges. It is the highest bond I have seen for the last 20 or so crew members arrested for possession of CSAM.

It’s clear that after nearly two years of investigation leading to 15 counts involving child pornography / sexual abuse materials, a cross-country extradition via private plane, a bond of over a million dollars, and some healthy smack-talk via Twitter, the FDLE is ready to send this pedophile cruise ship employee to jail for a long, long time.
