Physician at Veterans Affairs Medical Center Arrested for Child Pornography Offenses
BOSTON – A physician employed at the Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center in Bedford, Mass. has been arrested and charged with receiving and possessing child sexual abuse material (CSAM).
According to the charging documents, law enforcement received a CyberTip reporting that over 100 files of suspected CSAM files had allegedly been uploaded to Ljaamo’s Google account. When Ljaamo spoke to investigators, he allegedly admitted to viewing, downloading and saving pornographic material involving female minors. It is further alleged that several CSAM files, along with tens of thousands of pornography files, were found during a review of Ljaamo’s devices, including on a cell phone Ljaamo kept in his office at the VA Medical Center.
The charges of receipt and possession of child pornography each provide for a sentence of up to 20 years in prison. The charge of receipt, specifically, provides for a sentence of at least five years in prison and up to a lifetime of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000. Sentences are imposed by a federal district court judge based upon the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and statutes which govern the determination of a sentence in a criminal case.
United States Attorney Leah B. Foley; James Crowley, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Boston Division; and Christopher Algieri, Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General, Northeast Field Office made the announcement today. Valuable assistance was provided by the Billerica, Lowell and Salem Police Departments. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sandra Gonzalez Sanchez of the Major Crimes Unit is prosecuting the case.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse, launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. Led by the U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the DOJ’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children, as well as identify and rescue victims. The details contained in the charging documents are allegations. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
Man gets 10 years in prison for sexual assault of child over whom he was in a ‘position of trust’
A man who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a McHenry County child was sentenced to 10 years in prison and ordered to register as a sex offender for life.
In exchange for his guilty plea, other charges were dropped, including an additional count of predatory criminal sexual assault, indecent solicitation and aggravated criminal sexual abuse, according to the judgment order signed by Judge Tiffany Davis.
The child told a teacher in 2022 that she had been sexually abused, according to a news release from the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Martinez-Ortiz was accused of assaulting the child once at his home in California and once in McHenry County. He held a “position of trust and confidence” with the child, according to a 2nd District Appellate Court appeal of his pretrial detention.
The appeal, citing details presented by prosecutors at his first court appearance after his February 2024 arrest, said that in a phone call with the child’s mother, Martinez-Ortiz “admitted there had been inappropriate contact between him and [the child] in December 2021, although he claimed that [the child] had initiated the physical contact.”
The child gave graphic descriptions of what Martinez-Ortiz had done to her in an interview at the Children’s Advocacy Center in McHenry County. She said she feared him coming to her home for Christmas and a relative’s birthday, and worried for a younger sibling. The child said Martinez-Ortiz told her “not to tell her parents about the touching and especially not to tell her mother,” according to the appeal.
He is required to serve 85% of his prison term followed by three years to natural life of mandatory supervised release. He will receive credit for 212 days in custody of the county jail, according to the judgment order.
Buford couple found guilty after abuse of 7-year-old girl
A guilty verdict has been returned against a couple for reportedly abusing a 7-year-old girl at a Buford apartment.
The Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office reported on Friday that 25-year-old Javen Tyree Richardson and his girlfriend, 30-year-old Akilah Amin, were both sentenced in the case.
Richardson was convicted on four counts of aggravated child molestation and sentenced to two consecutive life sentences with the first 80 years to serve in prison.
Amin was convicted on one count of influencing a witness and one count of cruelty to children in the second degree. She was sentenced to 20 years with the first seven to serve in prison.
Amin and Richardson also had to register as sex offenders and must have no contact with the victim or her siblings.
“Justice for this young victim begins with the outcome of this trial,” Gwinnett District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson said. “Her family and her loved ones must continue to help her recover and heal.”
It won't help much that she will be in her mid-teens when Amin gets out of jail. She should be forced to live in a different state for the remainder of her sentence.
It’s reported that Richardson sexually abused the girl several times and the victim disclosed the abuse at school. It was revealed in court that Amin then trained the child to change her story and lie to officials about what happened to get Richardson out of jail.
The child told her story from the witness stand in front of the Gwinnett County jury, who returned the guilty verdicts.
Brave kid! Well done, sweetie.
