Pensioner faces multiple charges of attempted child sex offences
A 77-YEAR-OLD man from the Isle of Wight is facing multiple charges of attempted child sex offences.
Leon Clifton, of St Mary's Road, Cowes, appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court on Friday (August 1).He has been charged with two counts of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child.
There are also two charges of attempting to cause or incite a girl aged under 13 years to engage in sexual activity by penetration.
Clifton also faces a charge of attempting to cause a child under 13 to watch or look at an image of sexual activity.
The charges relate to a period between May 13 and June 12 last year.
No pleas were entered by the defendant.
He has been bailed and is set to reappear for a plea and trial preparation hearing at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court on September 1.
Isle of Wight ex school governor accused of

A NEW trial date and venue has been set for an Isle of Wight solicitor accused of various child sex abuse offences and possession of extreme pornography.
In November last year, Stuart Nuttall, of Stonelands Park, Ryde, appeared before a judge at the Isle of Wight Crown Court, where he denied a string of offences - 12 in total.
The 53-year-old, who served as a director of the IW Youth Trust between 2013 and 2018 and as a governor of Ryde Academy between 2007 and 2010, is accused of the following:
- Two counts of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child.
- Three counts of making an indecent photograph/pseudo-photograph of a child.
- Three counts of distributing an indecent photograph/pseudo-photograph of a child.
- Attempting to cause/incite a child under the age of 13 to engage in sexual activity.
- Attempting to cause a child under the age of 13 to watch/look at an image of sexual activity.
- Attempting to cause a child aged between 13 and 15 to watch/look at an image of sexual activity.
- Possession of extreme pornographic images/images portraying an act of intercourse/oral sex with a dead/alive animal.
Of the indecent images of children, Mr Nuttall is accused of possessing 206 category A images – the worst kind – 486 Category B images, and 168 Category C images.
Of those he is accused of distributing, they comprise 11 Category A images, 31 Category B images, and 12 Category C images.
He is also accused of possessing three extreme pornographic images portraying a person performing an explicit act of intercourse with an animal, namely a horse.
The charges relate to dates between February 19, 2023, and March 5, 2024.
Mr Nuttall, who was initially due to stand trial on July 28 on the Island, will now stand trial at Portsmouth Crown Court on September 25.
