Stories Today from UK-2, Canada, Italy and Thailand on Global PnP List

14yo girl serially raped by 40 men on Thai island

Phang Nga Bay, Thailand © Lucy Pemoni / Reuters

A teenage girl was reportedly gang-raped by as many as 40 men who came into her home while her parents were at work in Thailand.

According to the victim’s mother, the attacks began when a man broke into the family home in Ban Koh Raet in Phang Ng, near Phuket, last May and raped her then-14 year-old daughter.

“Because I and my husband work as rubber tappers, we must leave our children alone between midnight and dawn,” the girl’s mother explained.

A few days later, the man returned with another man and raped the girl. The attacks continued and the girl was reportedly taken to huts where she was drugged and gang raped. It’s estimated that about 40 men raped the girl.

The girl’s mother noticed a change in her daughter’s behavior and became suspicious when she realised the girl was afraid at night. She questioned her daughter and eventually she began to tell her what happened.

The mother then took her daughter to the police station to report the attacks in March. Three suspects had been arrested and later released on bail, the Bangkok Post reports.

The mother asked local police to re-open the case on Sunday after she learned how many men more raped her daughter.

Thai police have said they’ve identified 11 suspects on the small island of less than 200 people. The girl identified five of the men as her attackers when police showed her photographs, the Bangkok Post reported Friday. The men will be questioned by police before arrest warrants are issued.

Deputy National Police Spokesperson Colonel Krissana Pattanacharoen, told reporters they’re investigating the possibility that the case could be considered human trafficking, as the victim said she witnessed other girls being raped, the Nation reports.

The governor of Phang Nga has called for police to transfer the case to the police headquarters of the province, as locals are concerned that all the men have not yet been identified.

“Officials should identify all 40 suspects to clear any lingering doubts,” one resident said. “Or else, the reputation of our village will be ruined. Since this case was first reported, no tourists have come to our area.”

“Think about children who live in the village. They feel stress as such a claim means their fathers may be suspects," Yuttanakorn Juanjenkij, a governing official in Tambon Loryoong, said, the Strait Times reports.

Phuket Gazette reports the victim and her mother were brought to Takuapa Hospital for a physical and mental health check by the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security.

2 American students accuse Italian police of rape

Two members of the Italian Carabinieri are being investigated for the alleged assault of two American students, after driving them home from a nightclub, Italian media report. The State Department said it was taking the allegations “very seriously.”

Italian authorities said they questioned the two students about their allegations for several hours “and found no inconsistencies in their stories,” after they reported the rape early Thursday morning.

One student said she was assaulted in the hallway, and another in the elevator of their apartment building, reported La Stampa. Both women were taken to hospital to be examined.

The two Carabinieri were reportedly waiting to be questioned by police.

The US consul general in Florence had meeting about the case with the city’s chief of police on Friday morning. The meeting lasted about an hour and the consul left without making a statement to reporters, according to the Italian news agency ANSA.

The two women, 19 and 21, spent the evening at a nightclub. At one point, six Carabinieri were called in to break up a fight. Four of the officers left shortly afterwards, and the remaining two offered the Americans a lift home. CCTV footage captured the women getting into the police car.

A State Department official told AP they were aware of media reports about the assault and that such allegations were taken seriously.

The two students arrived in Florence several months ago to study Italian.

Florence is known for having one of the highest rates of reported sexual assaults in Italy, according to government statistics. In the first six months of 2017, more than 2,000 people were charged with sexual assault in Italy.

In January 2016, an American woman living in Florence was found murdered in her apartment. Later that year, a court in Florence convicted a Senegalese man of murdering the 35-year-old Ashley Olsen and sentenced him to 30 years in prison. An autopsy had determined that Olsen had been strangled and suffered skull fractures. Witnesses had said the woman and her attacker had met at a Florence nightclub a few hours before she was killed.

Churchwarden who imported child sex doll is jailed

© National Crime Agency / Reuters

A former churchwarden has been jailed for importing an “obscene” life-sized child sex doll into Britain.

David Turner, of Ramsgate, Kent, who was also a school governor, was arrested in November last year after Border Force officers intercepted a 3ft 10in (117cm) anatomically detailed and correct doll he had ordered from China. It was labelled as a mannequin and came with a fishnet body stocking.

A search of the 72-year-old’s home found two more child sex dolls, outfits for the dolls, 34,000 illegal images of child abuse, as well as photos he had taken of pupils at the school he governed.

He told police his preference was to view indecent images of children aged four to 10 and to “secretly” take photographs of girls in public places.

Turner said he bought the lifelike doll as a “companion” to join him and his wife. He said he had bought a number of dolls over the past eight years because he “loved children so much” and missed his own when they left home.

The 72-year-old admitted to having sex with the dolls on a few occasions.

Analysis of Turner’s computers showed he viewed websites selling items advertised as “flat chest love doll” and “mini silicone sex doll 65cm little breasts,” according to the National Crime Agency (NCA).

Officers also found 29 fictional stories written by Turner describing the sexual abuse of children, but these fell outside the Obscene Publications Act and were not the subject of a charge.

Following his arrest, Turner resigned as governor of St Ethelbert’s Primary School in Ramsgate, and from St Ethelbert’s and Gertrude Church, where he was a warden.

Turner has been jailed for 16 months – eight months for owning the doll and eight months for possessing images of child sex abuse.

In July, a court ruled the child sex doll was an “obscene” item after Turner’s lawyers had argued it was not covered by a law banning their importation. Other men have been convicted for importing child sex dolls, but this was the first case where the question of whether a doll is indecent or obscene has been tested by the courts.

Border officials are reporting seeing more lifelike silicone sex aids, which weigh around 55lb (25kg), imported into the country. They can cost thousands of pounds, and are sold on sites such as Amazon and eBay, the NCA said. The dolls are often manufactured in China and Hong Kong.

Authorities have seized 123 dolls from 120 individuals since March 2016.

What a pathetic person one must be to need things like this. And yet, I suspect they will be legalized in the next year or two.

Man arrested for alleged sexual offences against young relatives
Jonny Wakefield

Police have arrested an Edmonton man for alleged sexual offences committed against family members, including four children.

Alberta’s Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) Unit said Friday that officers arrested the 50-year-old man after a six-month investigation that identified four child victims in Alberta, Manitoba and Nova Scotia.

Police are not releasing the accused’s name to protect the identities of the victims. ICE is working with the Zebra Centre for Child Protection to provide support and resources to the victims.

Law enforcement became aware of the suspect in March after a man uploaded what appeared to be homemade child pornography online. The case was referred to ICE by the RCMP’s National Child Exploitation Coordination Centre.

The man was arrested on March 21 and charged with one count of possession of child pornography and two counts of distribution of child pornography.

Additional investigation turned up the historical sexual offences allegedly committed over several years against victims who were young children and family members of the man.

Police say the offences took place in Edmonton, Manitoba and Nova Scotia. While in custody, the man was charged with sexual assault, invitation to sexual touching and sexual interference for the alleged Edmonton crimes.

Late last month, the man was arrested on warrants issued in Manitoba and Nova Scotia for other alleged sexual offences, including sexual assault, sexual interference, touching for a sexual purpose, bestiality and child porn offences.

The accused is being transported under police supervision to Manitoba for court dates. He is set to appear in court in Thompson, Man., on Monday.

ALERT spokesman Mike Tucker said there is “a very real likelihood” that additional victims could be identified as the investigation progresses.

Det. Ian McFatridge said the alleged crimes happened over a period of eight years.

He would not say the ages or genders of the victims — including whether they are still minors — but said all four are related to the accused.

“This was a very troubling and challenging investigation,” he said, adding it “unfolded across multiple provinces, with multiple victims, and it entailed a number of sickening sexual offences.

“These victims were subject to varying degrees of sexual abuse when they were young children,” he said. “Some of these offences are historical, while some (were) committed more recently.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact local police or http://www.cybertip.ca.

ICE is a unit of the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams, an integrated unit that includes members of the Edmonton Police Service, RCMP and other municipal police forces.

Inquiry into sexual abuse of children calls for victims in South West to come forward
BY CARL EVE

A wide-ranging inquiry into the sexual abuse of children in the South West of England needs victims and survivors to come forward and tell of their experiences.

A number of organisations attended a workshop earlier this week where staff from the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA) urged them to reach out to their clients and urge them to take park in the inquiry's Truth Project.

Groups like the Devon Rape Crisis and Sexual Abuse Services, Intercom Trust and North Devon Against Domestic Abuse were asked to help inform survivors who stories and experiences will hopefully inform recommendations to government in an effort to improve upon past failures by the authorities.

David Poole, head of the South West Inquiry office said the meeting included more than a dozen different organisations where they discussed how to work together to encourage victims and survivors to speak out and have their voices heard.

Victims from the South West are urged to come forward and share their stories

While the Truth Project had been hearing from victims around the country for more than 18 months, the South West inquiry only opened its Exeter office in February and Mr Poole said he was keen to see it reach out to all parts of Devon and Cornwall.

He revealed that while 700 people had expressed an interest in the scheme, 315 had actually participated in the private sessions where their experiences were recorded.

Of those, only 26 in the South West had so far recorded their own horrific childhood tales of sexual abuse and how they were then treated by the authorities of the time.

Mr Poole accepted that many people still did not know of the existence of the inquiry and the Truth Project.

In response to questions from The Herald he also recognised the inquiry was lacking in knowledge about specific high profile cases in the South West – such as the appalling large scale abuse carried out by businessman William Goad over four decades and the wide-scale sexual abuse which was perpetrated at institutions like Forde Park, a Home Office-run approved school in Newton Abbot, which closed in 1985.

William Goad

The three-year police investigation into a number of Devon and Cornwall institutions including Forde Park – known as Operation Lentisk – cost £3 million.

In 2013 the force answered a Freedom of Information request which noted that the operation covered allegations made against 190 persons by 302 victims at 41 institutions throughout Devon and Cornwall. Of those, eight had been convicted with sentences ranging from six months to 18 years. Three had been found not guilty and one cautioned.

The document noted that "offences charge include, rape, buggery, indecent assault, grievous bodily harm and gross indecency."

The IICSA is described as offering an "unprecedented opportunity to examine the extent to which institutions and organisations in England and Wales have taken seriously their responsibility to protect children."

A wide range of institutions are being examined including "local authorities, the police, the Crown Prosecution Service, the Immigration Service, the BBC, the armed forces, schools, hospitals, children's homes, churches, mosques and other religious organisations, charities and voluntary organisations, regulators and other public and private institutions."

Forde Park School

Mr Poole said: "This is not part of the criminal justice process. What we're looking for is people to share their experiences with us. They won't be subject to cross-examination or judged in any way.

"They can say in their own words what has happened to them and their accounts will inform our recommendations."

He said the aim was to examine institutional failings to protect children and failures to respond to those incidents.

He said: "Some [victims] may know about the project but feel uncomfortable in coming forward at this stage of their life to share their experiences.

"For a long time people have not been listened to and their views were brushed under the carpet.

"The Truth Project offers the opportunity to come and share that experience.

"We know that people will find it difficult, very very difficult.

"We have emotional and psychological support to help them through that and have an environment at the Exeter office that is conducive to sharing their experiences."

He urged survivors to get in contact and say where they would prefer to share their story at a mutually agreed time.

Recognising that some of those who take part may have never before shared their painful experiences with any authority or even their own families, he said the IICSA had contracts with organisations who offer support which would immediately kick in after they were contacted.

In addition, the inquiry would, if necessary, make travel and accommodation arrangements for those who may need to come a long way to speak.

Survivors' stories would be digitally recorded on an audio system and then saved to be used as anonymised case studies.

Mr Poole said: "It will be in their own words, at their own pace, the effect this had on them and their families.

"We do ask people if they have any specific recommendations that they would like us to take into account, an observation on institutions and the impact of the abuse; the failings of those institutions; the roles of the organisations which have a physical presence and those that do not; what enabled the abuse to take place; what happened they didn't prevent it; what happened that perpetuated the abuse and why didn't those institutions do anything; how they were not heard and had to remain in those institutions; not being believed and then subjected to further abuse – we want to know about all of that.

"This inquiry is not here by accident. There have been patterns of abuse over decades and it's been a taboo subject for too long. But it had now started to be talked about in a way that society hasn't in the past and we have to act upon that."

He said the IICSA will make recommendations to Parliament based on the stories it gathers, which the Government and the Prime Minister would be expected to act upon.

He said: "Legislation may need to be changed."

Mr Poole stressed the inquiry was "independent of government" and will make "recommendations that it believes are the best to effect change for children."

He added: "It would be unwise for any future government to ignore any recommendations the inquiry makes."

6 Stories on Today's Commonwealth Perverts and Paedophiles List

Massive Child Sex Abuse Network Cracked by UK Police Who Paid Child Rapist to Inform

A total of 278 victims have been identified

A TOTAL OF 17 men and one woman have been convicted as part of a major investigation into the sexual exploitation of women and teenage girls in the northeast of England.

Operation Sanctuary by police in the Newcastle area has so far identified 278 victims who were raped, exploited or sexually abused.

Many of these victims were abused at “sessions” in which they were intoxicated with drugs and alcohol.

The victims ranged in age from 15 to their early 20s with the men in question aged in their 30s and 40s.

The women and girls were often groomed and befriended by the men who then invited them to these gatherings where they were plied with the intoxicants and abused.

The UK’s Crown Prosecution Service said that the trials heard how “the men would often threaten their victims with physical violence if they did not partake in sexual activity with them”.

Others were “subjected to sexual activity when they were incapacitated and unable to resist”.

The major investigation was set up at the beginning of 2014 and has so far arrested 461 people, spoken to 703 potential complainants and identified 278 victims.

In total, 93 convictions have been secured in addition today’s further convictions.

“These men systematically groomed and abused vulnerable teenage girls and young women over a number of years for their own sexual gratification. Some have already received significant prison sentences for their actions and others still face sentence,” Jim Hope of the Crown Prosecution Service said today.

In the various trials it emerged that a convicted child rapist was used as a paid informant to secure evidence against those accused.

Chief Constable Steve Ashman of Northumbria Police defended this tactic at a press conference today:

"XY was an authorised covert human intelligence source , an informant, who was able to report on criminality including child sex exploitation. He was a convicted rapist and to some of us the thought of the police engaging with such a person and paying them for information may appear repugnant, however he proved he was in a position whereby he could, and did, alert police to situations which allowed them to prevent offending and provide safeguarding measures towards potential victims."

"Those convicted today were mostly British-born and from a variety of backgrounds. Ashman added that communities in the area must ensure that shame must be attached to the actions of those convicted."

That they were British-born makes it all the more disturbing. They have no excuse because of their primitive culture. Besides, a quick look at their photos would reveal that probably 17 of the 18 are south Asian.

This holds out little hope that south Asians can be civilized over a period of time. Here we have at least one generation of barbarians who have not chosen to become civil. And, instead of addressing this problem, there is still an attempt to smooth it over - 'variety of backgrounds'!

“These are criminals and there has been no hesitation in arresting them and targeting them using all the means at our disposal. It is for individual communities to ask themselves whether they are doing all they can to eradicate such attitudes and behaviour so that the stigma and shame attached to such people prevents it from rearing its head again.”

Of the individuals convicted today, some have been sentenced to jail terms of two to ten years while others await sentencing.

In spite of my criticism above, I would like to congratulate Chief Ashman and everyone involved in this operation. God bless you.

New Zealand pedophile breaches home detention sentence

Christchurch child sexual abuse videos offender admits stopping outside primary school
LIBBY WILSON/STUFF

A child sexual abuse videos offender has admitted parking outside a school for six minutes while serving his home detention sentence.

The 49-year-old father, whose name is suppressed until his sentencing on October 5, will remain in custody on the charge of breaching his home detention.

The man had been sentenced in January for trading in child sex abuse videos involving 45 individual children, who had not been identified. He had also shared the videos 16 times.

He made the breach admission on Wednesday, the day a judge-alone trial had been scheduled in the Christchurch District Court.

On February 28 the man was allowed an approved absence from his home detention address for an appointment. He was required to travel directly home after the activity and not make any unapproved stops.

People on home detention wear electronic bracelets that allow GPS tracking.

His monitoring staff noticed he stopped outside a primary school for about six minutes. He said he stopped because he was on the phone, but was not able to provide proof of the call and he would not hand over his phone for a probation officer to check.

Probation commented: "The location in which he chose to stop based on his offending history shows a lack of insight into his own risk while putting himself into a high risk situation in stopping outside a school for a number of minutes."

Christchurch District Court Judge Tom Gilbert asked for an updated report on the man's suitability for another home detention term, but said it seemed "like a long shot".

The man had earlier agreed to a review of his home detention sentence. The Community Probation Service had asked for the home detention sentenced to be reviewed because the man was aggressive and hostile towards probation officers.

Crown prosecutor Pip Norman said the man's sentence began in January and had been due to run until January 2018.

The judge said the man's suppression would have to be re-argued at his sentencing.

Wow! A whole year of home detention! That should teach him... er.... well.... apparently, it hasn't taught him anything yet.

Former Ballarat mayor jailed for child sex abuse
Padraic Murphy, Herald Sun

A FORMER Ballarat area mayor has been jailed for sexually abusing a young girl.

But Graham Collins, 77, maintains he is innocent despite being found guilty by a County Court jury in June of four charges of child-sex abuse.

The offences occurred in 2015 and 2016 when Collins was 75 and the victim aged under 16.

Judge James Montgomery said he was unable to explain Collins’ offending because he maintains he is innocent and had offered no explanation.

Ballarat, AU
“(I am unable to say) why, given the constant publicity about this topic, you have offended as you have,” Judge Montgomery said.

“I’m amazed anyone would indulge in this sort of behaviour and expect to get away with it.”

Collins, a former football umpire and mayor of the shire of Sebastopol, has no criminal history and his wife and children continue to support him.

Collins served three terms on the Sebastopol Shire Council and has been awarded for his community service.

Judge Montgomery jailed Collins for four years, and ordered he serve at least two years and 10 months before he is eligible for parole.

'North Wales institutions failed to protect
victims from predators'

Professor Alexis Jay damning assessment as Truth Project
holds sessions in Bangor and Caernarfon
BY MARC WADDINGTON

The chair of a major inquiry into child sexual abuse said institutions in North Wales failed to protect young victims from sexual predators.

Professor Alexis Jay said she and her team wanted to hear accounts of people who were let down by those who were meant to look after them.

The Truth Project, which is being run as part of the Independent Inquiry Into Child Sexual Abuse, will be in Bangor and Caernarfon in October, where trained staff will be on hand for one-to-one sessions with victims.

Professor Jay OBE said: “For too long the voices of victims and survivors of child sexual abuse have not been heard and many have been made to feel ashamed for reporting the abuse in the first place."

Jailing of Gordon Anglesea 'justice at last' for reporter who spent 25 years searching for the truth

"We set up the Truth Project with the aim of allowing victims and survivors to share their experience with us in a safe and confidential environment.

“The Truth Project aims to give victims and survivors an opportunity to share their experiences in as much or as little detail as they feel comfortable with. Victims and survivors are also able to suggest how things can be done differently, which may help to protect children in the future.

"Hearing from victims and survivors in the Truth Project will help the Inquiry to draw conclusions about institutional failures.

“Many children in North Wales have been failed by the institutions that were supposed to protect them. As chair of this inquiry it’s my responsibility to examine to what extent institutions, including children’s homes, the police, local authorities, and religious organisations may have failed to protect children from sexual abuse.

Former Wrexham children's home boss John Allen was jailed for life in 2014 for abusing children

“Some people may be unsure about what constitutes child sexual abuse and some may even have experienced it without realising.

“Child sexual abuse means forcing or enticing someone under the age of 18 to take part in sexual activities. It doesn’t have to involve physical contact. For example, it could be encouraging children to watch pornography or to sext."

“It might be that the sexual abuse is carried out by a person in a position of authority, such as a teacher or someone who works in a children’s home. Or, the abuse might have taken place within the family environment but it was reported to someone in authority, such as a police officer, a teacher or a social worker but no action, or inappropriate action, was taken."

“I know that talking about child sexual abuse is not easy. Victims and survivors have often told me they feel stigmatised, ashamed, and guilty because of what happened to them."

"But I would like to encourage all victims and survivors to think about coming forward. The Truth Project was designed with help from victims and survivors to be as supportive as possible."

“You can share your experiences in Welsh or in English and we can pay travel expenses for you and for a companion to attend the session with you."

“The failure to listen to victims and survivors in the past is one reason why the inquiry was established and our aim is leave a legacy of a society which better understands the causes, nature and impact of child sexual abuse, so that institutions and individuals can never again say: ‘We did not know.’”

Queensland mother of three arrested over
child sexual abuse
Husband already charged with rape of children under 5

A 27-year-old northern Queensland woman has been arrested and charged with child abuse offences following months of police investigations into the abuse of her three young children.

It comes after her 32-year-old husband was arrested earlier this year in Charters Towers after he allegedly shared images of himself engaging in sexual acts with the children.

The three children were under five during the alleged offences and are no longer in their mother’s care.

Senior Sergeant Dave Miles from the Townsville Child Protection Unit said police believed a child was forced to watch a sexual act.

“The charge is in relation to the ongoing investigation, where we have imagery available to us which has identified a child being present while the parents engaged in sexual activity,” he said.

“We are still going through the material that has been made available to us through our investigation and through other policing agencies…. We will allege it demonstrates that the children were exposed to adult behaviours that is potentially damaging to their development.”

Sergeant Miles said police were now attempting to track down where the images were sent across the world.

The woman has been charged with one count of expose to a child under 12 to an indecent act.

Her husband has been charged with three counts of making child exploitation material, one count of distributing child exploitation material, five counts of indecent dealing with a child, three counts of indecent acts and two counts of rape.

Former Vancouver school janitor sentenced to
90 days in jail for sex crime against student

Joel Aguirre Gumban, 45, pleaded guilty to invitation to sexual touching of a person under the age of 16
CBC News

A former Vancouver School Board custodian has been sentenced to 90 days in jail to be served intermittently on weekends.

Last November, Joel Aguirre Gumban, 45, pleaded guilty to invitation to sexual touching of a person under the age of 16 relating to an incident at a Vancouver high school in the fall of 2014.

According to court documents, Gumban had been working at the school less than a week when he first approached a group of students, singling out a 14-year-old boy who spoke a shared dialect, eventually giving the boy his phone number.

A day later, Gumban approached the boy again and showed him a lewd picture on his cellphone.

A short time later, Gumban called the boy away from his study group, this time asking him for sexual favours and inviting him to the washroom.

In asking for the 90 day sentence, Crown highlighted four aggravating factors:

As a VSB employee he was in a position of trust and authority.
The offence was premeditated and involved grooming.
The victim was a child.
As a result of the offence, the victim has experienced paranoia, insecurity, sleep disturbances, anxiety and depression.

The pre-sentencing and psychiatric report filed by the defence noted that Gumban grew up in the Philippines in a conservative and devout Catholic family where "he was unable to be open about himself with his family and was unable to discuss his sexual attraction to both men and women."

Good grief!!!

In her decision, Judge Jodie Werier described Gumban as a "sympathetic offender," with no criminal record who is hard working and married with two small children.

Child Sex Abuse Probe to Hunt for Victims in UK Prisons

Troubled inquiry asks criminals if they were molested when they were young
The so-called ‘Truth Project’ is part of £100 million inquiry
into child sex abuse

By Martin Beckford Home Affairs Editor For The Mail On Sunday

The troubled child abuse inquiry is risking further controversy by going into prisons to ask criminals if they were molested when they were young.

Critics warn the plan could encourage inmates to make false allegations and lodge unwarranted claims for compensation.

The so-called ‘Truth Project’ is part of the £100 million inquiry which allows survivors of child sex abuse to tell their stories, without their accounts being tested, challenged or contradicted.

Officials will go into jails later this year to ask criminals if they were molested when they were young. Pictured is HMP Pentonville

Officials will go into jails later this year to ask prisoners to share their experiences, in the belief that many turned to crime after their lives went off the rails when they were abused as children.

Inmates’ stories may be published anonymously in official reports on the scale of past abuse and cover-ups in Britain’s schools, children’s homes and churches.

But barrister Barbara Hewson said: ‘I think it is trawling.

‘It’s all very well to say they want to look into institutional abuse but the more they do this and encourage people, some people will start to think maybe they can go for compensation.

‘They may well be people who have a long history of dishonesty and who see this as an opportunity to portray themselves as being wronged.’

Former Tory MP Harvey Proctor was questioned by Scotland Yard following lurid false allegations made by a fantasist

Former Tory MP Harvey Proctor, who was questioned by Scotland Yard following lurid false allegations made by a fantasist, added: ‘There is no veracity in the Truth Project because statements are made to it without any checks.

‘Anyone can say anything about anyone and it is not checked, but it goes down in history as truth. Many of the prisoners will have lied to the courts, but the inquiry has the default position that they believe what is said.’

The inquiry has not held a single public evidence session under its latest chairwoman, Professor Alexis Jay

Although claims will not be challenged by inquiry staff, cases will be handed to police to investigate, and prison and probation staff have been briefed about the plan to take the project into jails.

The huge public inquiry into historic child abuse has been beset by problems since it was set up by Theresa May in July 2014.

Its first three chairwomen quit, and it has still not held a single public evidence session under its latest chairwoman, Professor Alexis Jay. In addition, five of its top lawyers have quit.

A spokesman for the inquiry said: ‘The Truth Project is open to all victims and survivors of child sexual abuse, wherever they are.

‘There is evidence to suggest that victims and survivors are over-represented in the prison population. Therefore, we are planning a phased roll-out of the Truth Project in prisons in 2017.

‘The Truth Project does not have legal consequences, but lets victims and survivors of child sexual abuse bear witness.’

The project’s first report is due to be published in September.

Personally, I like the project. It could result in a lot of people beginning to deal with historical abuse where they otherwise would never get the opportunity to. It might even reduce recidivism somewhat. Certainly, it should lead to some perverts being brought to justice. I don't even mind the idea that there is an element of 'trawling' involved. Go Alexis!
