April is Sexual Abuse Awareness month > The Natasha Kampusch story

Natasha's story is one of a few stories that inspired me to begin this blog on Child Sexual Abuse 13 years ago.

She was ten years old, walking to school for the very first time on her own.
A quiet suburban morning. A little girl tasting independence for the first time.
She never made it to class.
A man named Wolfgang Přiklopil pulled her into a van and drove her to a house on the outskirts of Vienna. Behind a hidden trapdoor, past a heavy steel door, he locked her in a room barely bigger than a walk-in closet.
No windows. No sunlight. Concrete walls in every direction.
That room would be Natascha Kampusch's entire world for the next 3,096 days.
She was ten years old. And she was completely alone.
On her very first night, terrified and trembling in the dark, Natascha did something that would define her survival strategy for the next eight years.
She asked her captor to tuck her in and kiss her goodnight.
Not because she felt safe. But because she understood — instinctively, at ten years old — that to survive, she had to make him see her as a human being.
"Anything to preserve the illusion of normality," she later wrote.
That one insight — that psychological strategy — would carry her through years of darkness.
Přiklopil controlled everything.
He cut the electricity off at 8 PM every night. He barked orders through an intercom. He starved her, shaved her head, forced her to clean his home. He told her that her parents never paid a ransom. That they didn't want her back. That no one was coming.
But Natascha never stopped being Natascha.
She devoured every book he brought her. She clung to routine. She refused to let hatred consume her — not out of weakness, but because she knew: "That hatred would have eaten me up and robbed me of the strength I needed."
She was choosing, every single day, to protect her own mind.
Then came the night that changed everything.
She was 12 years old. The pitch-black cell. The crushing loneliness. The terrifying feeling that she might lose her grip on reality.
And in that darkness, she did something extraordinary.
She imagined herself at 18. Older. Stronger. Free.
And her future self reached out a hand.
"Right now, you cannot escape. You are still too small. But when you turn 18, I will overpower him. I will free you. I won't leave you alone."
That promise became her lifeline.
Every time Přiklopil hurt her, she whispered it to herself.
Every time the darkness felt permanent, she held onto it.
She is coming. She is getting stronger. She will not forget me.
The years crawled by. 13. 14. 15.
At 15, she punched her captor — and proved to herself she hadn't broken.
At 17, Přiklopil began taking her outside. Skiing. Shopping. Work sites. Always with threats. Always with fear. But the outside world existed, and she had seen it.
And on her 18th birthday, something shifted deep inside her.
She looked at Přiklopil and said: "This situation must come to an end. One of us has to go."
August 23, 2006. 12:53 PM.
Natascha was in the garden, vacuuming Přiklopil's car.
His phone rang. The vacuum roared. He stepped away.
For the first time in 3,096 days — she was outside. And she was alone.
Every cell in her body screamed one word.
Run.
She dropped the vacuum and bolted — through gardens, over fences, past startled strangers who stood and stared. She knocked on a window. A 71-year-old woman named Inge opened the door.
"I am Natascha Kampusch," she gasped.
Police arrived at 1:04 PM.
After 3,096 days — Natascha Kampusch was free.
She had freed herself. Not through luck. Not through rescue.
Through a promise she made to herself at 12 years old — and spent six years becoming strong enough to keep.
That evening, Přiklopil took his own life.
When police told Natascha, she wept — not from love, but because the complicated thread that had bound her survival to his existence had snapped all at once. Trauma doesn't follow a script.
She rejected the label of Stockholm Syndrome. "I have the right to describe my own experience in my own words," she said.
Today, Natascha Kampusch is 38 years old.
She wrote 3,096 Days, which became a film. She bought PÅ™iklopil's house — to stop it from becoming a tourist attraction, because that place, however dark, was part of who she became.
She has dedicated her life to advocacy, speaking, and healing on her own terms.
The 12-year-old girl who made a promise in the dark was right.
On the exact day she turned 18, she walked out of that prison.
Just like she promised she would.
Here's the thing that will stay with you:
No one rescued Natascha Kampusch.
In her darkest moment — a child in a concrete cell — she reached forward in time, created a version of herself who was stronger, and held onto that image for six years.
Most of us will never face what she faced.
But all of us know what it is to feel trapped — in a situation, a mindset, a season of life that feels permanent.
Natascha's story whispers the same thing her future self once whispered to her:
Hold on. A stronger version of you is already on the way.

Islamic Insanity > Muslim Knife to Woman's throat - 'Because I wanted you' - Vienna

‘Because I wanted you!’ Syrian asylum seeker

threatened woman with bread knife in a beer garden

translated from “„Weil ich dich wollte!“ Syrischer Asylwerber bedrohte Frau mit Brotmesser im Gastgarten,” Unzensuriert, July 12, 2024 (thanks to Medforth):

A 25-year-old woman will not soon forget this incident in a beer garden on Trabrennstrasse in Vienna-Leopoldstadt (Krieau). A Syrian citizen threatened her with a knife. Reason: He wanted to “have” her!

Bread knife held to throat

The young woman told uncensored that the suspected perpetrator, a 28-year-old man, had constantly come to the table where she, her mother and her grandfather were sitting. The Syrian had been asked several times to go away until he suddenly pulled out a bread knife and held it to the 25-year-old’s throat.

Mother reacts reflexively

With presence of mind, the courageous mother then knocked the knife out of the attacker’s hand and, with the help of her grandfather, held him to the ground until the police arrived. The suspect was arrested on the spot and charged with suspicion of making a dangerous threat. According to the Vienna State Police Directorate, he was taken to a correctional facility after consultation with the public prosecutor’s office.

“Because I wanted you”

The incident occurred on July 7 in broad daylight, at around 8 p.m. according to the victim. The first few days after this experience were not particularly funny, the young woman described the effects of the event. When asked whether she had any idea why the man grabbed the knife, the 25-year-old replied:

When he was lying on the ground, I asked him why he did it. He replied: “Because I wanted you.”

Not untypical of a Muslim man who thinks he has a right to rape any non-Muslim woman he can.

She is now very angry and has been warned about what can happen to you in broad daylight in Vienna, the young woman told uncensored. The alleged perpetrator had apparently carried the bread knife in his backpack. You never know if you might suddenly have to cut a piece of bread somewhere…

8 Iraqi Men Jailed for Gang-Rape of German Tourist in Austria

© AP

Nine to 13 years

Eight Iraqi asylum seekers have been sentenced by an Austrian court to between nine and 13 years in jail for the brutal gang-rape of a 28-year-old German woman during New Year’s celebrations over a year ago.

A group nine Iraqi nationals, between 22 and 48 years, were arrested last summer in Vienna and two other Austrian provinces and charged with “abuse of a defenseless person and rape in a very humiliating and agonizing way for the victim.”

Charges against one suspect were dropped, as investigators found that he was asleep during the assault.

All members of the same family, the men came to Austria as migrants between May and December 2015. Five of them already had refugee status at the time of the assault, while the other four had their applications pending.

Vienna New Year's Eve 2016

The brutal assault took place on 2015/2016 New Year’s Eve, as the victim from the northern German state of Lower Saxony came to Vienna to celebrate with her female friend. The victim got “separated” from her friend during the festivities and met four reportedly drunk Iraqis at some point after midnight. They took advantage of her heavily intoxicated state and brought her to a flat, where five other men were waiting.

The perpetrators assaulted the victim for several hours, and the savage attack left the woman in need of medical and psychological treatment. “Nothing makes me happy anymore,” her lawyer quoted her as saying.

Only one of the perpetrators has reportedly acknowledged the rape and showed some remorse, while others either claimed the sex to have been “consensual” or have denied it altogether.

The investigating team, however, managed to prove their horrific assault with DNA and video evidence.

The quite harsh sentences imposed on the eight Iraqis might serve as a “warning” for all the migrants coming to Austria, Defense lawyer Andreas Reichenbach believes.

“As we all know, asylum-seekers don't have the best image here in Austria,” AP quoted him as saying. “I think that this surely played a certain role, to make it clear to these people that when they come to Austria that such behavior won't be tolerated.”

The victim was awarded damages of €25,000 ($26,265). Both prosecution and defense teams said they might appeal the court ruling, Reuters reported, citing the court spokesperson.

Migrants from other countries expressed fear that such outrageous cases might incite hostility against them to a whole new level and condemned the attack.

“Eight people raping a woman – that's honor-less! Such a thing doesn't exist in our religion,” a migrant from Turkey, Burhan Akbas told AP.

I'm sorry; what planet do you live on? Is it more 'honorable if only 4 people rape a woman, or just 2 or 3? Does marrying 9 year olds exist in your religion? Does taking sex slaves exist in your religion? Have you actually read the Quran?

Sexual related attacks and incidents have been on the rise amid EU’s migrant crisis. Last year, mass sexual abuse transpired in the German city of Cologne, perpetrated by a group of men allegedly of North African and Arab descent, although police failed to identify all the attackers.

Ahead of New Year celebrations this year, police in Austria’s capital Vienna took precautions and distributed 6,000 special “anti-rape” pocket alarms among women. The devices emit a shrill sound to deter potential perpetrators and alert police.

Despite the measures, at least 18 sexual assaults occurred during this year’s revelry in the Austrian city of Innsbruck, where women were reportedly groped by a gang of “individuals.”

9 Iraqi Gang Rapists Cannot be Deported from Austria

By David Frankenhuis

In the Austrian capital of Vienna, nine Iraqi men are now on trial for kidnapping and gang-raping a 28-year-old German woman nearly 14 months ago, on New Year’s Eve 2016. The suspects, between 23 and 47 years of age, are all relatives. They entered Austria as asylum seekers.

This makes no sense!

The migrants may face 15 years in jail for their crimes. After serving their sentences, they cannot be deported to Iraq since that country has reintroduced the death penalty in 2004, Kronen Zeitung reports today.

This is just odd; are they facing charges in Iraq? If not, and if they have paid for their crimes by serving time in Austrian prisons, what is stopping them from being deported? They won't have to face court in Iraq for gang-raping a woman in Austria, so what does it matter if Iraq has the death penalty. Unless they are facing criminal charges warranting a possible death sentence, then there is no reason not to deport them. If they are, do you really want to keep them in Austria? It makes no sense. How many Austrian girls will suffer abuse because of this nonsensical ruling?

Just two weeks ago I posted a story of an 18 y/o who raped a 72 y/o woman (see second story). He won't be deported because he has no prior record. The fact that he had only been in Austria for 2 months seems to have been lost on officials.

Only one of the Arabs has confessed to the rape charges. Some of the other migrants have admitted to having ‘sex’ with the victim, named Julia, but deny any claims of coercion in the ordeal lasting more than two hours.

They even dared to state in court that “the woman had initiated all of it,” which is rather flippant considering the fact that Julia was carried away from a restaurant by four of the men to an apartment several miles away, after being plied with drinks that possibly were spiked.

Vienna Christmas market

In the apartment, 5 male relatives of the men were waiting. All of the wives and daughters had been sent away in advance in order to create some ‘privacy’. One of the Iraqis later told police:

“The room should be dark, we had decided, so she did not realise how many of us were present at the time, but she caused trouble by crying so much and sometimes by trying to fight back against us.”

Then all of the 9 refugees raped the terrified victim, some of whom even violated her more than once. Following the gang rape during the NYE festivities, the men took selfies with her and one was even “dancing and singing,” OE24 yesterday reported.

When the ordeal was finally over, the men dumped Julia near a tram station. The disoriented and traumatised woman was then found by passers-by, who brought her to a police station.

Julia has since quit her job and was hospitalised in a psychiatric clinic. She has been diagnosed with severe post-traumatic disorder and depression.

Another Afghan Proves They Cannot Be Assimilated

Refugee teen charged with rape of social worker after finishing course on how to behave with women

© Darrin Zammit Lupi / Reuters

A 16-year-old Afghan refugee, who had recently taken a course on how to behave towards women, has been charged with raping a female employee at a refugee shelter in Belgium.

The center’s spokeswoman told RT he had had “an eye on her for quite some time.”

The incident took place in the Belgian town of Menan near the French border. The minor, who “has been staying in the center in Menan already for five months,” followed the “young cook into the basement,” where he allegedly raped her, An Luyten, a spokeswoman for the Red Cross Flanders, told RT.

She added that the teenager “apparently already had an eye on her for quite some time.”

Belgian prosecutors confirmed that the Afghan minor had attacked the young woman, who works for a catering firm providing services to the Menan refugee center, adding that a judge had ordered that the suspect be detained in youth custody until his next hearing.

According to the Red Cross Flanders, which runs the center, the “boy” had attended a course on how to behave towards women given by the organization just two weeks before sexually assaulting the young girl.

Afghans will not be assimilated into western culture.
Keeping them in Europe is cultural suicide.

“When a minor comes to Belgium and when a minor comes to a center of the Red Cross Flanders, we teach them two things: first thing is sexual education… sometimes we are talking about children who are 14, 15, 16 years old. Without parents, they do not know anything,” Luyten told RT.

“We also have to explain what the normal ways of treating women here in Flanders [are],” she added.

Luyten stressed that, although “this is a very serious case and we will condemn it very strongly,” it was “a single case,” and it would be “unfair” to extend blame for it to “all the 5,000 people that we shelter at this moment.”

Menan, Belgium

However, the incident has already thrown more fuel on the already raging migration debate, as Tom Van Grieken, leader of the Belgian anti-immigrant party Vlaams Belang, said in a tweet that “people who need a course on how to treat women should not be there in the first place.”

Friday’s incident was just one of the latest in a string of sexual assaults linked to the Europe’s ongoing mass refugee influx.

On December 4, four male refugees living in a shelter in Norway raped and beat up their 19-year-old female friend, who was later taken to a hospital in serious condition. The culprits even recorded a video of their crime, which ended up becoming key evidence in the case.

In another incident last December, an Iraqi refugee raped a 10 year-old boy at a swimming pool in Vienna, Austria, after which the victim, who suffered severe internal injuries, was admitted to a children’s hospital. Following the assault, the assailant simply remained at the pool until he was detained by police, to whom he explained that that he had had a “sexual emergency,” as he had not had sex in four months.

New Year's Eve assaults in Germany still worse than reported

A wave of public indignation was also caused by a series of sexual attacks in Germany on New Year’s Eve. First reports indicated that a large number of sexual assaults, including several rapes, had taken place in the German city of Cologne. However, leaked police documents later revealed that attacks had actually taken place in 12 German states and the number of victims in only four German cities, including Cologne, had exceeded 1,200. According to police documents, the suspects were mostly men of migrant origin, although the majority of them had been living in Germany for some time, and were not recent arrivals.

Austrian Swimming Pool Off-limits to ‘Unaccompanied Refugees’

Mom says son may never recover mentally
© Wolfgang Rattay / Reuters
The alleged sexual assault of a 10-year-old boy by an Iraqi refugee in Vienna has sparked mixed reactions: while locals feel unsafe and blame the government, pro-immigration campaigners claim such cases should not be the basis for “general mistrust.”

After the boy was allegedly brutally raped in southwestern Vienna by a 20-year-old refugee in the changing rooms at a swimming pool, people became more worried about their families’ safety in the Austrian capital. The suspected child abuser, who arrived in Austria from Iraq in September of last year, leaving a wife and a child back at home, is one of many newcomers who now prevail in their neighborhood, locals say.

“There are more migrants than Austrian families at the moment here, really huge groups of migrant people,” one woman told RT.

“We used to bring our kids swimming in this pool, [but] when we heard about the incident, after this sad story we decided to stay away,” another man said, adding: “It’s the fault of the Austrian government, because it took lots of refugees from the outside.”

The mother of the boy who was raped said that he was badly injured and will never recover mentally. I think with some counselling he will be able to deal with the incident and go on to have a somewhat normal life. I hope so anyway.

Incident hushed up
The incident at the public pool happened in December of last year, but received no coverage in the media back then. Police are still reluctant to share the details, only telling RT that the suspect “lives in Vienna and has a refugee status.”

Meanwhile, management at another municipal swimming pool near the Austrian capital in the town of Modling has recently banned migrants. Citing “repeated complaints by bathers and staff,” the managers banned admission to people “of immigration background” if they are not accompanied by social workers.

“Some of them were not able to behave themselves, and went after the women following them into the showers. They [also] tried to break up our vending machine. I couldn’t just stand by, I had to do something,” Robert Mayer, the manager of the pool, told RT’s Laura Smith, adding that “young asylum seekers are welcome to come here, but only if they are accompanied.”

The decision has been criticized by left-wing pro mass immigration campaigners, who claim there have been other places and people that have refused to deal with migrants and refugees.

“This is something that we’ve been seeing a lot happening lately, be it in a swimming pool, or at a doctor’s – which we had – who refused the treatment of refugees, or a lawyer who would say he would not represent refugees or asylum seekers or migrants. And then you would have a bar that would ban refugees from entering,” Vienna city councilor and Green Party member Faika el Nagashi told RT.

Calling for tolerance, she stressed that “there is never any basis to stigmatize a whole group of people based on one, or two, or a number of incidents.”

So, then, how many little boys have to be brutally raped before it is obvious to you that there is a huge cultural problem?

“We feel very worried about the atmosphere as it [is] today. After so many bad news in the media and picture of Islam as a religion, there is an atmosphere of general mistrust,” Carla Amina Baghajati of the Islamic Faith Community of Austria told RT’s Laura Smith.

Yet, such incidents do not receive enough coverage in the western media, Laszlo Maracz, a professor from the University of Amsterdam, argued.

“We see the same pattern all the time: migrants commit an offense, [including] sexual molestations or a robbery... and the authorities try to suppress this information, and the media is not reporting on it,” Maracz told RT, adding that “the mainstream media is trying to cover up the data that is somehow violating the image that migrants are all very nice people who can be trusted.”

The media think they are doing the right thing in not inflaming the passions of Austrians, but they are not. They are making ordinary Austrians more vulnerable this kind of attack by not warning them of the dangers of being around migrants. If the truth hurts, then deal with what's causing the pain, don't pretend it isn't there; you are betraying the very people you serve.

“Western Europe was the place where citizens were trusting their authorities, their quality media. Now it all has become questionable and it shows that the European way of life as we used to know it is changing,” he said.

Iraqi Refugee Raped 10yo Boy in Austria, Says it was ‘Sexual Emergency’

Vienna swimming pool  © Ruptly
Austrian police have confirmed that an Iraqi refugee was arrested over the rape of a 10 year-old boy at a swimming pool in Vienna in December. He told police he did it due to a “sexual emergency,” local media reported citing the interrogation record.

"A complaint was filed over the rape of a 10-year-old boy in the Theresienbad swimming pool. We determined the suspect is a 20-year old man, who lives in Vienna. He was arrested and later sent to the Josephstadt prison," Chief Inspector Roman Hahslinger told the Ruptly video new agency on Saturday.

Hahslinger added: "The suspect is an Iraqi citizen, who lives in Vienna and has refugee status."

The attack took place in a swimming pool cubicle on December 2. The man, whose name has not been disclosed, dragged a boy into the changing room and assaulted him. After the boy told a lifeguard what had happened, the police were immediately called. They managed to apprehend the attacker in the pool, who, to their amazement, instead of fleeing the crime scene, was having fun by jumping from a three-meter board, Die Heute reported.

The boy, who suffered severe internal injuries,
was admitted to a children’s hospital.

The perpetrator, who came to Austria via the Balkans on September 13, confessed to police he had acted because of a “sexual emergency.” When asked if such actions were legal in his home country, he admitted he knew that “such acts were forbidden in any country of the world.”

He also confessed he had made a “huge mistake,” Die Standard reports, citing the interrogation record published by the Austrian Press Agency.

The state prosecutor charged the man, who remains in custody, with rape and grave sexual abuse of a minor, the body’s spokeswoman Nina Bussek confirmed on Friday, the Kronen Zeitung newspaper reported.

"The topic of refugees certainly is occupying all at the moment, but people needn’t be worried; Vienna is a safe city, nothing has changed about that yet," Hahslinger told Ruptly.

Austria has accepted the second highest number of refugees per capita so far in Europe. Only Sweden has taken in more. In January, Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann announced a plan to introduce a cap on the number of asylum requests the country would approve in 2016, fixing the number of refugees at 37,500.
