Child Porn Sting Nabs Elementary Teacher, Disney Employees

An undercover child pornography bust has led to the arrests of eight men, three of whom stand out. 

One man was a housekeeper at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, another was a cook on Disney’s BoardWalk and a third was a school teacher.

Two of the men worked at locations around Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida.

Angel Rivera-Maldonado, 44, worked in housekeeping at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge while Kevin Nazzaro, 52, was a cook at Big River Grille and Brewing Works on Disney’s BoardWalk.

Disney has yet to comment on the status of these men’s employment, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

Polk County sheriff’s deputies also caught a man whose alleged crimes and occupation were in even more direct conflict. Juan Berrios, 64, faces 35 counts of possession of child pornography and is a first-grade teacher.

Detectives received tips that the Palmetto Elementary School teacher was uploading child pornography depicting children between the ages of three and six. However, after detectives seized his home computers, they discovered pornography with children less than a year old, WFLA reported.

The Polk County School Board has suspended Berrios without pay.

In a statement emailed to WFTS, Polk County Public Schools Superintendent Jacqueline M. Byrd said, “We are taking swift action and cooperating fully with law enforcement in their investigation… I will recommend that his employment be terminated at the July 26th meeting of the Polk County School Board.”

EL PASO, Texas – A Fabens Elementary School teacher wanted on two counts of continuous sexual abuse of a child was arrested Friday in South El Paso.

A spokesperson for the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said Santiago Chavez, 45, was arrested at a business in the 500 block of North Kansas Street.

According to the arrest affidavit, Chavez sexually abused two teenage brothers on a regular basis last year. Those teenagers are 14 and 16 years old. 

Deputies began their investigation on Oct. 28 when they spoke with the two victims. The relationship between the victims and Chavez is not known.

One of the victims told authorities that the abuse happened between 10 and 15 times within the past year, according to the arrest affidavit.

Chavez allegedly forced the teenagers to perform oral sex on him or he would perform the act on them. The victims also told police that Chavez raped them regularly. On Nov. 6, detectives tested the boys’ room for forensic evidence. Investigators reportedly found evidence to substantiate the teens’ claims, according to the arrest affidavit. 

Chavez is a special education teacher at the elementary school but is currently on administrative leave, according to the Fabens Independent School District. The district’s superintendent told KFOX14 he had been on leave for the past two months.

Parents at Fabens Elementary School said they couldn’t believe that Chavez would be capable of something like this.

“It was like a shocker because he does not seem like he would be that kind of person. He's really good with the kids and everything and it's like I'm just hoping that it's not true,” said America Pena, who has two boys enrolled at the school.

According to Pena, Chavez’s wife is also a teacher at Fabens Elementary and taught one of her sons last year.

“My sons didn't have him for a teacher, but my sons love him. My boys love Mr. Chavez,” she said.

Pena described Chavez as a good teacher and an outstanding member of the community. Other parents told KFOX14 they are still trying to figure out how to address the matter with their kids.

“As a parent, you don't think that you have to talk about something like that to your kids, especially at a school where they are supposed to be protected. Really, you shouldn't be talking about that with your kids because it shouldn't be happening, period,” said Diana Sanchez, the mother of two kids who attend Fabens Elementary.

She said the district did not send out any notification to parents informing them of the situation.

“They should let us know what is happening and let us know if our kids or anyone was around that person, because we want to know if something happened to our kids,” Sanchez said.

Chavez was booked into the county jail on two counts of continuous sexual abuse of a child. His bail totaled $500,000.

A former school teacher from Burlington is facing several charges after an investigation by the Halton Regional Police's child abuse and sexual assault bureau.

Police say they received allegations of physical abuse and inappropriate sexual touching against a 58-year-old man who used to work at Alexander's Public School in Burlington.

They say the teacher is now facing a charge of assault, three counts of sexual interference and three counts of sexual assault.

The man was employed as a music teacher at the time of the alleged incidents.

Police say they believe there may be other victims and are urging anyone with information to come forward.

A former Barrie man who was an elementary school teacher in the city faces three sex charges after Ontario Provincial Police received a complaint about a child sexual assault.

David Andrew Carswell, 61, of London, ON, was charged Friday with sexual assault, sexual interference and sexual exploitation during the 2004-05 school year while he was still teaching. The alleged assault took place at the school and during a field trip in Toronto, according to police.

The OPP child sexual exploitation unit received a complaint Sept. 16. Det.-Sgt. Paul Thompson said the complaint was made by a parent of the alleged victim.

“The allegations are from 10 years ago (when) the victim is still under 18,” he said. “At this time, we have no information that would lead us to believe there are any other victims.”

Thompson said the incidents happened when Carswell was a teacher at Ferndale Woods Elementary School in Barrie.

“It’s always troubling to hear of allegations that involve a vulnerable young child being abused by a person of authority," he said. "It can be very traumatic for the complainants and we try to help them with counselling resources.”

Carswell was scheduled for a bail hearing Friday in Barrie. He was released on bail and ordered to return to court next month.

Police say the investigation is continuing.

Carswell was convicted of possessing child pornography in 2009 for 14 images of child pornography.

But the judge also found that he used his credit card to purchase child porn and that he had 475 such images on his computer that had been previously deleted, and so he could not be convicted on those images.

Carswell, who was a Grade 5 and special-education teacher, used the online name 'Diamond Dave' in his pursuit of child pornography. Carswell used his credit card — information that led police straight to his door — to purchase the images from a child-porn ring that made millions of dollars selling the images in Canada, U.S., France and Spain.

Carswell said he was searching for one of his 10-year-old students because he feared the child was being groomed for child porn. At the time, Carswell testified, “It’s in my heart to protect children.”

The judge dismissed Carswell as a man "in denial" and sentenced him to six months under house arrest and two years of probation.

Carswell was forced to retire early after 29 years of teaching because he was threatened to be fired by the school board if he didn't, his lawyer said at the time.

Carswell received one-third of his pension and he and his wife, who was a school principal, moved to London. His wife was transferred to board administration.
