U.S. Marshals recover 8 missing, endangered children in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS — Police recovered eight endangered children after an operation with U.S. Marshals last week.

Several agencies, including IMPD and the Indiana Department of Child Services, joined the U.S. Marshals Service in "Operation Homecoming," from Aug. 31-Sept. 4. The children, who between the ages of 6-17, were determined to be among the "most at-risk and challenging recovery cases in the area," the U.S. Marshals said. The children were at high-risk due to being victims of child sex trafficking, child exploitation, sex abuse, physical abuse and medical or mental health conditions, the agency said.

Federal investigators also arrested one adult in the operation, which was carried out throughout the Indianapolis metro area. That person was arrested on allegations of parental kidnapping, intimidation, weapons possession and custodial interference.

The eight children were turned over to DCS to provide assistance for the victims and place them in homes. They had all been reported missing by local police and were reported to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which also assisted with the operation.

Agents used information including last-known addresses for the children, addresses of their friends' homes and their schools to begin the investigation. 

It was the first operation of its kind conducted by the U.S. Marshals Service, Southern District of Indiana. Several similar operations have recently recovered dozens of missing children nationwide, including in Georgia and Ohio.

Great work, this needs to be happening in every county in America, at least monthly.

“The Marshals are committed to assisting state and local agencies with locating and recovering endangered missing children to help prevent their falling victim to crimes of violence and exploitation,” said Dan McClain, U.S. Marshal for the Southern District of Indiana. “The message that we wish to convey to the missing children and their families is that we will use every resource at our disposal to find you.”

The U.S. Marshals Service Missing Child Unit and Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force, along with the Indiana Fusion Center also assisted in the operation.

Idaho man indicted on 9 felony child sex abuse charges;

held in 2C jail on $500K bond

CALDWELL — A Nampa man is being held in the Canyon County Jail on a $500,000 bond following his indictment last week on nine felony child sex abuse charges.

Kacey Rae Mcdonough faces six counts of lewd conduct with a child under 16 and three counts of child sexual abuse of a minor under 16.

Court records show the charges were alleged to have occurred in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2018. It is unclear if the same victim or multiple were involved. A no-contact order has been filed, barring him from contacting any victim(s) or anyone under 18.

Mcdonough's arraignment is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Sept. 16 before 3rd District Judge Christopher S. Nye. Mcdonough is represented by Nampa defense attorney Chad William Gulstrom.

If convicted, child sexual abuse of a minor under 16 carries a penalty of up to 25 years in prison; lewd conduct with a child under 16 carries a penalty of up to life in prison.

COLUMBIA, SC (FOX Carolina) - On Tuesday, SC Attorney General Alan Wilson said a man from Greenville County was arrested after he was accused of distributing files of child sexual abuse material.

Attorney General Wilson said 26-year-old Trent Cornell Bewley was arrested on Sept. 3 after investigators received a CyberTipline report from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) which led them to him.

Wilson said Bewley was charged with 10 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, second degree, a felony offense punishable by up to 10 years imprisonment on each count.

Youngest of three Berrys pleads guilty to child sex abuse in Cortland, NY

A city man pled guilty Thursday to sexually assaulting a young boy under the age of 11 in exchange for a prison sentence of 12 years with 20 years of post-release supervision.

Jonathan S. L. Berry, 26, formerly of Pendleton Street, admitted to performing oral sex on the boy last fall. Berry was charged in November (12th story on link, I think) with performing sexual acts on three young children: a 2-year-old boy, a four-year-old girl and an eight-year-old boy.

Berry pled guilty Thursday to one count of felony, first-degree criminal sexual act as part of the plea bargain; the charge carries a potential maximum sentence of 25 years and 20 years of post-release supervision. Berry’s brother and sister-in-law are also facing unrelated child sex abuse charges, but are being prosecuted in federal court.

Campbell warned Berry he could face civil confinement, such as forced residence in a state psychiatric facility or especially strict parole supervision in the community, after he completes his prison sentence. Civil confinement would continue indefinitely until the state Mental Health Office or the court determines Berry is no longer a threat to others, according to the state Division of Criminal Justice Services. To qualify for civil confinement, Berry would have to be diagnosed with a “mental abnormality” that predisposes them to sex crimes and urges that are especially difficult to control, according to the division.

While civil confinement is a possibility, less than 3 percent of sex offenders are forwarded to civil management proceedings, the division notes.

Campbell noted she cannot know if Berry will qualify. “I do not have a crystal ball,” she told Berry. “I cannot predict what will happen in the future.”

Jonathon Berry appears to have some delayed development issues. See the comments on the link above for more information. I hope they do a thorough pre-sentence investigation into his mental capacity.

City police arrested Berry in November after an investigation sparked by a disturbance at a Pendleton home, according to The Cortland Voice archives.

Police responding to the home determined Berry had pushed a 32-year-old woman down a flight of stairs, punched her television and threw it out a window, according to the Cortland Police Department. The woman told responding officers that she suspected Berry of abusing three children they were acquainted with, said Lt. Michael Strangeway in December.

Berry was originally charged with eight felonies: three counts of first-degree sexual abuse for engaging in sexual contact with a person under the age of 11, three counts of first-degree sexual abuse for engaging in sexual contact with a person under the age of 13 when the actor is over the age of 21, one count of first-degree criminal sex act against a person younger than 11 and one count of first-degree criminal sex act against a person younger than 13 when the actor is over the age of 18. Berry was also charged with three counts of endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor.

Berry’s brother and sister-in-law, Lawrence Berry and Brittany Berry, are also facing child sex abuse charges in federal court for creating pornography using a three-year-old in August and September 2018, according to the Department of Justice. Brittany Berry sent a video and a picture to Lawrence Berry of the abuse over the internet, the DOJ stated in a press release.

Brittany Berry pled guilty in October in federal court to one count of conspiracy to sexually exploit a child and five counts of sexual exploitation of a child, according to the DOJ. Berry faces a minimum sentence of 15 years and up to 30 years in prison on each of the six counts of conviction.

Lawrence Berry was also federally charged with conspiring to create child pornography, the DOJ stated. Both federal cases are still pending.

Oakwood, Ga. man sent video of child sexual abuse

An Oakwood man is behind bars after authorities say he transmitted a video of child sexual abuse via social media. 

Ernesto Aguilar-Ramirez, Jr., 41, is said to have been in possession of at least one video showing "child sexual abuse involving an adult male and a 6-8-year-old child," Sheriff’s Office spokesman Derreck Booth said in a news release. 

Hall County Sheriff’s Office investigators received a tip Aug. 12 from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children while working with the Georgia Internet Crimes Against Children task force, authorities said. 

Investigators obtained a search warrant for Aguilar-Ramirez's residence Wednesday, Sept. 2. Authorities said Aguilar-Ramirez had the video on his cell phone and sent it through social media in May, though Booth did not say who the intended recipients were. 

“At this time, there is no evidence indicating the video was produced locally or involved a local victim,” Booth said. 

Aguilar-Ramirez was charged with two counts of electronic exploitation of a minor, and investigators are still looking through Aguilar-Ramirez's phone, Booth said. 

He was booked Wednesday into the Hall County Jail, where he is being held without bond. 

Pittsburgh man gets lengthy term for child sex abuse

at mom's daycare

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A man who sexually abused children at a daycare center his mother ran at her Pittsburgh home has been sentenced to several decades in prison.

David Tyus received a term of 44 to 88 years on Wednesday.

He was convicted in March on numerous child rape and other sex assault charges.

Authorities said Tyus assaulted children attending the Friendships Play House daycare, as well as a 17-year-old girl who was in the house when no small children were present.

His mother pleaded guilty in July 2019 to child endangerment for leaving children alone with her son when he didn't have required clearances.

She was sentenced to probation.

So, as I have warned so many times, never leave your children in a daycare where men, or teen boys, are present. Nor allow boys to babysit your children. There may be some perfectly fine people out there, but there are dozens and dozens of stories like this on this blog.

Boulder, Colo, man, a R/W extremist, sentenced for thousands

of child sex abuse and torture images

BOULDER, Colo. (KDVR) — A Boulder man arrested last summer has been sentenced to 15 years and six months in prison for possessing thousands of images and videos of child pornography, U.S. Attorney Jason Dunn announced Friday.

Wesley David Gilreath, 30, accepted a plea deal in February. He pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of child pornography.

Authorities said they found more than 12,000 images and 200 videos depicting child pornography on his primary phone. They found tens of thousands of similar images on other devices inside his home, including a thumb drive.

“The child pornography on the thumb drive and both of the defendant’s phones included images and videos depicting the sexual abuse and torture of toddlers and infants,” Dunn’s office said in a statement issued Friday.

Additionally, during the sentencing hearing, evidence was presented that Gilreath had posted “hunting guides” online targeting Jews, Muslims and other groups.

Moreover, during a search of Gilreath’s home, agents found a full-size Nazi flag, materials about the Oklahoma City bombing and a T-shirt with Timothy McVeigh’s face on it.

“Agents also found hand-written notes bearing the names and addresses of 15 Mosques, Synagogues, religious centers and other locations, all less than 35 miles from the defendant’s apartment,” Dunn’s office said.

In May 2019, Gilreath tried to buy a gun, but was unable to following a query into the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.

The purchase was denied because he was previously adjudicated as a “mental defective or committed to a mental institution” on March 21, 2016, according to an affidavit.

Gilreath was apprehended in July 2019 after he left his unlocked iPhone on an RTD bus, leading authorities to arrest him, court records show.

“While one image of child pornography is horrific, tens of thousands of images and videos in the possession of one person is almost incomprehensible in its depravity and wickedness.  While we can never return the lost innocence that this defendant has stolen, this sentence ensures that he can no longer contribute to the market for these images,” Dunn said on Friday. “Mr. Gilreath was also a credible threat to various religious communities in Colorado.  They can now rest assured that that threat has been stopped for at least a very long time.”

According to a search warrant, Gilreath told federal authorities he did not “label himself a white supremacist,” but wanted the “white race to win at life,” by having money and property while preventing others from obtaining those things.

The case was investigated by the Denver FBI office with support from the Boulder Police Department, RTD and the Rocky Mountain Regional Computer Forensic Lab.

In addition to the prison term, Gilreath was sentenced to 10 years of supervised release.

15 years is not long enough. The judge should have cancelled the plea deal and sentenced him to twice what he got.

Astoria, Ore. man sentenced to prison for encouraging child sex abuse

An Astoria man was sentenced Wednesday to 2 1/2 years in prison for charges related to encouraging child sex abuse.

Fabian Alberto Zamora-Rodriguez, 34, pleaded guilty to two counts of encouraging child sexual abuse in the first degree and online sexual corruption of a child in the first degree.

He was arrested in February 2019 after the sheriff’s office said he showed up at a local park for what he believed was going to be a sexual rendezvous with an 11-year-old boy.

Deputies had been posing as the boy and the boy’s 40-year-old babysitter online after a local resident reported a person was using the dating application Grindr to solicit sex with children in exchange for child sex abuse imagery.

Zamora-Rodriguez was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in July 2019 at the Clatsop County Courthouse in Astoria after a hearing related to the charges.

Federal agents used what appeared to be pepper spray on people who were trying to escort him away. He was taken to a federal detention center in Tacoma, Washington.

Zamora-Rodriguez’s detention was cited by civil liberties advocates at a rally in August 2019 in Washington County. Advocates called on Oregon Supreme Court Chief Justice Martha Walters to issue an emergency rule prohibiting ICE arrests at or near county courthouses. There were also concerns raised about ICE using administrative warrants to detain people in courthouses.

Walters enacted the rule in November prohibiting ICE from detaining people at state courthouses without a judicial arrest warrant.

She said in a statement that “arrests in courthouses have interfered with judicial proceedings and removed criminal defendants before they have been sentenced or completed their sentences.”

Circuit Court Judge Cindee Matyas ordered ICE in December to release Zamora-Rodriguez to the Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office for his scheduled court appearance and any other court appearances for the duration of the case.

Zamora-Rodriguez has been lodged in the Clatsop County Jail since December.

Toronto police say the 2014 discovery of an online group allegedly involved in the sexual abuse of children has led to 153 arrests and numerous convictions in multiple countries and jurisdictions, including Canada.

The results of a three-year-investigation, dubbed Project Mercury, were announced by investigators from Canada, the U.K. and the U.S. at a news conference in Toronto Thursday.

Police said that after the National Crime Agency in the U.K. discovered the group in 2014, they reached out to various other police agencies as offenders and locations were identified.

The growing investigation led police to a number of disturbing discoveries.

As part of an undercover investigation in July 2015, officers from the Toronto Police Child Exploitation Section observed the sexual abuse of a six-year-old child being live streamed for the pleasure of the abuser, as well as for a participating online audience, police said Thursday.

“During the abuse of the six-year-old child, users commented amongst themselves, as well as directing the abuser,” Detective Constable Janelle Blackadar told reporters. “Unfortunately this was not the first time this happened, but I can tell you that it was the last.”

Blackadar said the abuser was identified in Pennsylvania within hours and the child was rescued.

Several people who allegedly watched and directed the abuse were subsequently identified by local police services and more than 20 alleged offenders were arrested.

In March 2016, an undercover Toronto police officer found child sex abuse material involving an eight-year-old child.

“The offender also was inviting members of this community to attend and engage in the sexual abuse of this child by drugging the child with narcotics to facilitate the abuse,” Blackadar said.

The child was identified as being in Saskatoon, Sask. Toronto police contacted local RCMP, who arrested a suspect within hours and rescued the child.  

A Saskatoon man was subsequently convicted of multiple child porn-related charges and an application has been made to designate him as a dangerous offender, police said.

The investigation has led to the arrest and conviction of multiple alleged offenders, including seven in Toronto, two in Ottawa and one in each of Belleville, Thunder Bay, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Quebec, New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

“The success of this joint project with the National Crime Agency and Homeland Security Investigations, along with numerous other domestic and international partners is a great example of cooperation of law enforcement agencies with one common goal; to identify and safeguard children, no matter where they are in the world,” Blackadar said.

Graham Ellis of the U.K’s National Crime Agency told reporters that many of those arrested as part of the investigation were people who had occupied positions of trust.

“We’ve safeguarded 58 children as a direct result of this operation,” Ellis said. “We’ve also removed nine people from a position of trust. By that, I mean four teachers, a doctor, a member of police staff, an A&E nurse, a priest, and a private music tutor. We’ve also prevented a child being adopted by an offender and we’ve removed a child from foster care.”

He said the July 2015 incident observed by Toronto police led U.K. police to arrest and prosecute six offenders.

“Of those six, the most serious was a youth worker who drove vulnerable adults around the United Kingdom,” Ellis said. He was sentenced to 11 years in prison.

Other people prosecuted in connection with that incident included a charity worker and primary school teacher, Ellis added.

In all, Project Mercury involved 23 U.S. states, as well as the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, France, Ireland, Denmark, Belgium and Slovenia.

Police have published a list of those charged and or convicted in Canada as part of the investigation.

Blackadar said technology has multiplied the potential for the sexual abuse of children and she said investigators are urging anyone with a sexual interest in children to come forward to police or health professionals to receive treatment rather than consuming child sex abuse material.

Police are hoping revolutionary DNA technology will lead them to a suspect in the cold case of a young B.C. couple killed 30 years ago in Washington state.

Tanya van Cuylenborg, 18, and Jay Cook, 20, of Saanich, Vancouver Island, were last seen on Nov. 18, 1987.

The high school sweethearts took a ferry from Victoria to Port Angeles, Wash., on what was supposed to be an overnight trip to Seattle. Both of their bodies were found within days of their disappearance and police have been baffled by the case ever since.

Images of a suspect in the double homicide have been created using DNA collected back in 1987. They show a Caucasian, green or hazel-eyed, blond-haired man at ages 25, 45 and 65.

According to the information gleaned from DNA, the man may also have freckles and be thinner or heavier than the images indicate. Detectives believe whoever the killer is likely bears a strong resemblance to the images.

The sister of Jay Cook says she hopes the photos will spark new tips in the case.

"If these pictures from this new, amazing technology triggers a memory ... please come forward forward for the sake of my brother Jay and Tanya. Call it in," said Laura Baanstra.

New DNA technique

The technique used is called Snapshot DNA phenotyping and is a relatively new procedure that involves using DNA to predict the physical appearance and ancestry of a suspect or unknown person. 

"We've used it in over 150 cases and with 100 different agencies both in the U.S. and internationally," said Ellen McRae Greytak of Parabon Technologies, the company behind Snapshot DNA.

"We've helped solve quite a number of cases, [some] as old as 25 years."

Baanstra said she had yet to work up the courage to look at the images. "That may be the face of the person who killed my brother," she said, choking back tears. "That's tough."

Cold case detective Jim Scharf, who works in Snohomish County, Wash., said if nothing else, the photos help rule out anyone with dark skin or dark hair being a suspect.

"We hope that this new technology will help us positively identify a suspect and finally provide answers for their families," said Scharf. "We believe that someone knows who our person of interest is."

Cook, 20, and van Cuylenborg, 18, were reported missing Nov. 20, 1987, after taking the ferry from Victoria to Port Angeles, Wash., on what was supposed to be an overnight trip to Seattle.

A week after the couple vanished, van Cuylenborg's body was discovered in a ditch, 20 kilometres south of Bellingham, Wash. Police said she had been raped and shot in the head.

Cook's body was discovered under a bridge in Monroe, Wash., a couple of days later. He had been beaten and strangled.

"The person who did this came prepared to do a brutal crime," said Scharf, who has worked on the case for 13 years.

Despite numerous public appeals over the years and and a number of crimes shows profiling the homicides, detectives had exhausted all leads.

"Their killer has never been identified, and the DNA has never come back with a positive hit," said Snohomish County Sherrif Ty Trenary. "With this, we may be one step closer to identifying the killer." 

"It gives us hope," agreed Sgt. Jennifer Sheahan-Lee of the Skagit Country Sheriff's Office.

Cook and van Cuylenbog's families have put forward a reward of $50,000 that will stand until the end of this year in exchange for information leading to the identification of the suspect.

"This was a cold and calculated crime. This person could have talked or bragged about this event," Baanstra said. "Even just the smallest piece of information could help."

Former B.C. CSA police detective pleads guilty

to 3 sex-related offences

A former Vancouver Police Department detective who specialized in investigating child exploitation has pleaded guilty to three sex-related charges, including two that involve a minor.

James Fisher made his guilty pleas at provincial court in Surrey on Wednesday.

Fisher was originally arrested in Surrey in December 2016 on three counts of sexual exploitation, one count of breach of trust, one count of sexual assault and one count of obstructing justice by providing false or misleading information, but a BC Prosecution Service spokesperson said the Crown was proceeding on two new informations containing the entirety of the charges.

This avoids a stay of proceedings but doesn’t affect sentencing.

The two counts of breach of trust and one count of sexual exploitation that Fisher pleaded guilty to Wednesday were added in March 2017.

The charges state that Fisher abused his position of trust by kissing a young person for a sexual purpose, and kissing two witnesses in a criminal prosecution. The victims were one minor and one adult.

According to the BC Prosecution Service, the three offences took place between Aug. 22 and Dec. 7, 2015, and all took place in Surrey or Vancouver.

Fisher was a longtime detective with the VPD’s (Vancouver Police Dept.) unit that investigates child exploitation. He received the 2015 Chief Constable Unit Citation for extraordinary dedication for his part in the force’s probe into a child-trafficking case.

The Vancouver Police did not comment on the case Wednesday, however Chief Const. James Palmer spoke out when charges were initially laid in 2016.

“I was upset… very troubling news,” Palmer at a press conference. “It’s a very unfortunate set of circumstances and it’s a very difficult thing for me to stand before you today.”

Fisher is expected to be sentenced on June 29.

Priest who repeatedly raped boy, 5,

jailed for nine years in Scotland

A PAEDOPHILE priest has been jailed for nine years after repeatedly raping a five-year-old boy and abusing other youths.

Father Francis Moore, 82, forced his vulnerable victims to relive the horror abuse by giving evidence during his trial.

Moore was convicted at the High Court in Glasgow

Today, Judge Rita Rae slammed Moore for abusing his position within the church.

He was convicted of the historic sexual abuse of three young boys and a trainee priest.

And one of his victims Paul Smyth, now 49, has urged other victims  to come forward.

Moore, who was also known as Father Paul, was found guilty after trial at the High Court in Glasgow last month.

Judge Lady Rae told him: “You have been convicted of despicable crimes involving the sexual abuse of three children 40 years ago and more recently of a student priest.

“The most serious of these crime involved the repeated sodomy of a little boy aged five."

“In carrying out these crime you took advantage of your position as a minister of religion, a profession from which the public, including children, ought to be able to expect integrity, trust, support and pastoral care. What you did was a gross breach of trust."

“The complainers have displayed considerable courage in coming forward to denounce your criminal conduct.”

Moore showed no emotion as he was led away to begin his sentence.

Outside court, brave victim Paul Smyth, who has waived his right to anonymity, said: “I am glad justice is done and I can finally put this behind me. I am sure there are other survivors who were too scared to come forward.”

Paul, who was sexually abused as a boy on Irvine beach, added: “I would urge all victims of historic abuse to go to the police and give their testimony."

“Tell a teacher, tell your parents, tell the police, tell the clergy. There are good clergy as well as abusive clergy in the Catholic Church.”

The court heard allegations against Father Moore were first raised in 1996 but it was not until 2015 that a major cop probe was launched after former top cop and former Labour MSP Graeme Pearson flagged the matter in parliament.

Bishop Maurice Taylor, 91, told the court Moore admitted he had “an attraction to young boys” and had “a desire to abuse minors” – and was shipped off to a specialist clinic in Toronto for his “problem”.

When he returned from Canada he was told he could no longer serve as a parish priest.

The court also heard the priest groomed some of his victims by taking them swimming or out for meals before sexually abusing them.

His youngest victim was just five when the priest abused him at primary school. The man, now 46, told how Moore kissed him and then sexually abused him.

He said the abuse took place for the first time when he was sent to Moore by his teachers after drawing a picture of Jesus Christ with nipples.

The man said he was crying and Moore embraced him and then sexually abused him.

Serial molester gets 15 years’ jail for

MUMBAI: A special Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act court on Wednesday convicted and sentenced a serial molester to a total 15 years in jail for sexually abusing three minor children in his neighbourhood.

The man was found guilty and sentenced to five years’ imprisonment in each of the three cases. The sentences will have to be served one after the other.

The 39-year-old accused, arrested by Santacruz police in 2015, will be granted a setoff for the time he has already spent in jail. This means, he will now be in jail for 12 years.

The accused was, however, acquitted in a fourth case where he was accused of sexually abusing two girls in the neighbourhood.

In April 2015, four offences of molestation and rape were lodged against the accused at Santacruz police station. Police arrested him and alleged he was a serial offender who called the girls over to play with his two-year-old child.

A 10-year-old girl first complained to her parents, and later two girls—aged between five and eight—related similar experiences.

The 10-year-old told police that she and other children from the neighbourhood would often go to play at the residence of the accused, whom she called “mama” (uncle). The girl said that on April 15, 2015, when she was playing at his place, he sexually abused her. She informed her parents a few days later.

The 10-year-old girl also told police that her sister too had told her parents about a similar incident involving the accused.

UPI -- Pope Francis told bishops in Chile he feels "pain and shame" for the "crucified lives" of clergy-related sex abuse victims, saying he made "serious mistakes" in his handling of the cases.

The pope angered abuse victims in January by accusing them of slandering Bishop Juan Barros Madrid, who accusers say protected priest Rev. Fernando Karadima. The pontiff had said there was no evidence against Madrid.

In a letter Wednesday to followers, the pope asked for forgiveness and said he misjudged the severity of the cases. He said his perception was "due to a lack of truthful and balanced information."

And, why would he expect truth from a bishop?

The papal apology stems from a recent investigation by Maltese Archbishop Charles Scicluna into potential abuse cover-up. Scicluna's 2,300-page March 20 report includes testimony from abuse victims.

"I can affirm that all the testimonies collected speak in a stark manner, without additives or sweeteners, of many crucified lives and I confess that this has caused me pain and shame," Pope Francis said after a "slow reading" of the report.

"I apologize to all those I have offended," he said, adding that he plans to apologize personally to some of the survivors who testified.

The pope has not said whether he will ask Madrid to step down, but has asked the country's bishops to visit Rome for a meeting in the near future.

Karadima, the former head of the El Bosque parish in Santiago, was sentenced to a life of penitence and prayer for his abuse of young boys in 2011.

LONDON:  Child sex dolls have been pulled from sale by online retail giant Amazon.com Inc after widespread criticism from a watchdog and charities in Britain over concerns that people who use such lifelike dolls may go on to sexually abuse children.

More than a dozen child sex dolls were removed from sale, having been listed by third-party sellers, according to Amazon.

"All Marketplace sellers must follow our selling guidelines and those who don't will be subject to action including potential removal of their account," an Amazon spokesman said in a statement. "The products in question are no longer available."

England Children's Commissioner, Anne Longfield, said Amazon should explain how the dolls were permitted to be posted on their website, and ensure they cannot be put back up for sale.

"Such dolls are clearly built for one purpose, and that purpose is a clear danger to the safety of real children," she said in a statement after a BBC investigation into the issue.

Britain allows people to manufacture and own child sex dolls yet it is illegal to import them. A British man was convicted last year for doing so in what police said was a landmark case in the fight against a new form of sex crime against children.

Opinion is divided over the use of child sex dolls, which have the appearance, weight and anatomy of real children.

Some charities argue such dolls should be made available on prescription to help prevent people who are sexually attracted to children acting on their desires.

Other organisations, such as the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC), say sex dolls can be dangerous proxies to act out fantasies like rape or child abuse.

"There is a risk that people using these dolls could become desensitised ... (and) go on to harm children, as is often the case with those who view indecent images of children online," said Almudena Lara, NSPCC's head of policy and public affairs.

"There is absolutely no evidence that using the dolls stops potential abusers from abusing children," she added.

In fact, because we know that sin is progressive (which we have documented many times here), we know that men will soon tire of the imitation and begin to desire the real thing.

Bangkok: A mother has been arrested in the Philippines after she allegedly spent five years sending sexually explicit images of her two daughters to an Australian paedophile in the country's booming cybersex industry.

The youngest daughter was only 10 when Stephen James Sheriff, 46, of Cairns, started sending money to her mother in Mandaue City on the Philippine island of Cebu.

Nine months after Sheriff was arrested by the Queensland Police's ARGOS Child Abuse and Sexual Crime Group, Philippine police burst into the mother's house on May 27 and allegedly caught her live-streaming her now 15-year-old daughter performing sex acts for another paedophile.

The girl told Philippine journalists she had been praying for the abuse to stop.

Thank You, Lord, for answering that prayer!

In a separate case three days later, police stormed a house in Iligan city, a cybersex hotspot on the island of Mindanao, and allegedly caught five people in the act of live-streaming the sexual abuse of children aged two, six, eight and 15.

The suspects include the mother one of the children.

General Liborio Carabbacan, of the Philippine police's Women and Children Protection Centre, said forensic examination of electronic devices seized from the house would help identify "multiple foreign perpetrators" – possibly Australians - who allegedly purchased child exploitation images and video from the suspects.

"Such information will be shared with international law enforcement," she said.

The mother arrested in the Cebu case faces charges including child abuse, human trafficking and cyber crime. She could be sentenced to life imprisonment if convicted.

The five suspects aged 15, 18, 22, 25, and 43 in the Iligan City case face similar charges.

Fairfax Media understands the Australian Federal Police and members of the ARGOS task force have identified other Australians who have bought view-on-demand child sex and abuse videos and images from the Philippines, as investigators work to expose dark web operators in the country, one of Asia's poorest.

Fairfax Media revealed in early May the AFP had played a key role in the rescue of three sisters aged eight, nine and 12 in Bacolod City, 720 kilometres south of Manila. Another Queensland man was arrested in connection with that operation.

On April 20, Philippine authorities, acting on an overseas tip, uncovered a major live-streaming child abuse and torture syndicate linked to predators in Australia, Canada and Europe, arresting 53-year-old American David Timothy Deakin.

Six children aged between two to 18 were rescued.

Authorities seized a mobile HD tablet containing more than 4000 contacts, numerous computers and hard drives.

Jon Rouse, head of the ARGOS task-force, described the behaviour of Sheriff, who has been convicted in Cairns District Court on eight counts relating to the exploitation of children, as "despicable".

"Sheriff may as well have been in the room with the kids. The fact he was seeing it in the virtual world is irrelevant…what happened to those kids happened because of him," he said.

Sheriff was sentenced to less than three years in prison.

That's just wrong. Live-streamed child sex abuse should be considered the same as if the buyer were the one doing the actual physical abuse. It's not like downloading a video that has been seen dozens or hundreds of times. Each live-stream connection is at least one child being sexually abused. He ought to be put away for 10 years or more, as it is he'll be out doing it again in a couple years. What's the point.

Detective-Inspector Rouse said more cases of child cybersex are being uncovered because of the increasing capabilities of law enforcement agencies, including in tracing financial transactions.

"We are detecting it more because we are looking for it more," he said, adding that Australians have been known to be involved in the online sexual exploitation of children for almost a decade.

Asked whether the involvement of Australians was growing, Detective-Inspector Rouse said "it is already quite an established market".

The International Justice Mission (IJM) helped rescue 201 children who were forced to participate in online sexual exploitation between 2011 to May 2017.

More than half of the victims were under 12 and 70 per cent involved parents, relatives or close family friends of the victims.

Evelyn Pingul, IJM's director of communications in the Philippines, said the alarm needs to be sounded that online sexual exploitation of children has become an epidemic in the Philippines.

"We need the police to continue rescuing these children, we need the prosecution to continue convicting more sick criminals," she said.

IJM's National Director Samson Inocencio called for law enforcement agencies to be given more resources "to fight this horrific crime against children".

"We also need to have specialised after-care models to address the restoration of these young survivors," he said.

NEW ORLEANS -- A human trafficking task force specially designed to attack the crime and rescue victims updating the New Orleans community on its latest two-day operation during a press conference Wednesday, February 1. 

The operation by the New Orleans Violent Crime against Children and Human Trafficking task force rescued 11 women in just two days. The victims range in age from their early 20s to late 40s.

This sting focused on victims, so no arrests were made, but police said they are cracking down on human trafficking especially as more people travel to the city for Mardi Gras and the NBA All-Star Game weekend. 

"Anytime you see somebody being victimized, it's heartbreaking," said FBI Special Agent in Charge Jeff Sallet. "The scars, both physical and mental, are incredible. If you are a pimp, do not come to New Orleans."

Sallet also said other operations like this one will be taking place in New Orleans in 2017. The NO VCAC/HT TF is a full-time task force currently comprised of FBI agents and task force officers from the Louisiana State Police, Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office and Kenner Police Department.

Interpol says 10,000th Victim of Child Sex Abuse Rescued

Less than seven years after Interpol set up its international child sexual exploitation database, the global crime buster has identified and rescued the 10,000th child victim, it said on Monday.

Congratulations, Interpol. Keep up the great work.

Using the worldwide database, investigators analyse millions of images found on suspects’ computers or spotted on the internet.

The system’s sophisticated software compares photos and videos, allowing investigators to identify abusers and locations.

“The scale of this crime is shocking, made worse by the fact that these images can be shared online globally at the touch of a button and can exist forever,” said Interpol chief Juergen Stock. “Each time an image or video clip is shared or viewed, the child is being re-victimised.”

Analysis of the digital, visual and audio content of files is another way of finding clues, determining when cases overlap and pooling efforts to locate victims.

Police services in 49 of Interpol’s 190 member states are connected 24/7 to the ICSE database.

In June, 2015, a man in his 40s was arrested in the southwestern French town of Ariege after he posted pornographic pictures of his 10-year-old niece on the internet.

His detention was triggered on the other side of the world where New Zealand police had just entered the photos into the Interpol database after infiltrating a discussion forum.

That step allowed their French colleagues to determine the same day that the images came from Ariege, by spotting in the background a French shampoo logo and the uniform of the local firefighting service.

In another case, British police were able to rescue a child and arrest his suspected abuser only 10 hours after Australian police uploaded images to the ICSE database.

But Stock warned: “Whilst we are pleased to have assisted law enforcement around the world... this is just the tip of the iceberg.”

Saying “more can still be done,” he urged the private sector and the public to play a greater role in tracking down abusers.

The trafficking of child pornography, which existed long before the internet, grew exponentially in the 1990s as the internet expanded, an official of the ICSE told AFP.

“No country is spared” from the scourge, said the official, a French woman who requested anonymity.

“In more than 95% of cases, the abuser is part of the victim’s entourage,” she said.

“Sometimes you see children growing up in the pictures, without being able to find them. But sometimes you can find them in less than 24 hours.”

Nevertheless, the important thing is not that one more Chibok girl was rescued, but that 97 women and children were rescued. Boko Haram has abducted thousands of women and children; all rescues should be celebrated.

ABUJA, Nigeria, May 20 (UPI) -- The Nigerian army said it rescued a second Nigerian schoolgirl abducted in 2014 by Boko Haram, but Chibok residents are disputing the statement.

The rescue of Serah Luka came Thursday afternoon after a clash between the military and Islamist insurgents in northeastern Nigeria, in which at least 35 Boko Haram fighters died, Nigerian Army Col. Sani Usman said. He added 97 women and children were found, including Serah.

"We are glad to state that among those rescued is a girl believed to be one of the Chibok Government [Girls] Secondary School girls that were abducted on 14 April 2014 by the Boko Haram terrorists. Her name is Miss Serah Luka, who is number 157 on the list of the abducted school girls. She is believed to be the daughter of Pastor Luka," Usman said in a statement.

But activists and residents in Chibok, the town where up to 276 female secondary school students were abducted on the night of April 14, 2014, noted the girl's name is not on the families' list of missing persons.

The leader of a group representing the girl's families, Yakubu Nkeki, told the BBC four priests are among the parents but none are named Luka, adding that Serah Luka is from Nigeria's Adamawa state while all the abducted girls are from Borno state.

Two days earlier the army announced the rescue of Amina Ali Nkeki, 19, one of those kidnapped. She is considered as the first rescued captive from the Chibok abduction. While some jumped from trucks on the night of the kidnapping to escape, at least 218 girls remain unaccounted for.
