Madeleine McCann Kidnapped 8 Years Ago Today

New leads being investigated
Madeleine and possible crime scenes
It was eight years ago today that Madeleine vanished from her holiday apartment in Portugal.

No trace of the toddler has ever been found, despite an intensive police hunt and campaign by her parents.

Detectives had previously been probing 18 burglaries at tourist apartments in Praia da Luz which matched the circumstances by which they believe Madeleine was taken.

These burglaries had seen the thief gain entry to the premises via a window.

However after intensive police investigation in the case, a further ten apartments have now been included in the investigation.

Forensic evidence from these apartments is now being compared to evidence from the apartment
Madeleine was staying in.

The development was revealed in new book ‘Looking for Madeleine’.

Last week her parents won a libel payout against Portuguese detective Goncalo Amaral.

He had been on trial over claims he made in a book that the couple were involved in Madeleine's disappearance.

Madeleine McCann's parents win libel damages
in trial of police chief

A former Portuguese police chief has been ordered to pay the parents of Madeleine McCann €500,000 (£357,953) in libel damages after accusing them of faking their daughter’s abduction.

Gonçalo Amaral, who led the botched police search for the three-year-old in 2007, has been on trial at Lisbon’s Palace of Justice over claims he made in a book about Madeleine’s disappearance.

Gerry and Kate McCann told the trial last year of their “devastation, desperation, anxiety and pain” at being accused by Amaral of hiding their daughter’s body.

In a lengthy ruling on Tuesday, Amaral was found guilty of libelling the pair and ordered to pay them €250,000 (£179,170) each in damages, plus €106,000 (£76,000) in interest. The judge also banned further sale of his book, the Truth of the Lie.

The ruling comes days before the eighth anniversary of Madeleine’s disappearance on Sunday. She vanished from her parents’ holiday apartment in Praia da Luz on the evening of Thursday 3 May 2007, triggering the biggest missing persons investigation for decades.

The McCanns said after Tuesday’s verdict that they were delighted with the judge’s ruling and stressed that the action was never about money.

McCann and ordered to pay €500,000

In a statement issued by their family spokesman, Clarence Mitchell, they said: “We are delighted with the judge’s verdict today. We want to emphasise the action was never about money. It was entirely focused on the effect of the libels on our other children and the damage that was done to the search for Madeleine.

“A lot has changed in the six years since we launched the action and we are pleased that there is still an active investigation in both Portugal and the UK. We would like to remind people that there is still an innocent little girl who is missing and that those responsible for her abduction remain at large.”

A renewed Scotland Yard inquiry, launched in 2011, has so far failed to make a significant breakthrough. In the past year, detectives have carried out fresh ground searches and interviews with witnesses in the Algarve resort.

Kate and Gerry, who were originally seeking €1.25m (almost £900,000) in compensation from Amaral, said the damage caused by the retired officer’s book was exacerbated because it could stop people coming forward with information if they believed his assertion that Madeleine was dead. However, the judge’s 52-page ruling said €500,000 compensation was “adequate and proportional” to the damage caused by the allegations.

Amaral’s book, which was a bestseller in Portugal, was particularly controversial because it was released just three days after the Portuguese attorney general’s office decided to shelve the search in July 2008.

The court said it was not proven that the allegations made in the book “contributed to hindering, in any way, the course of the investigation” into Madeleine’s disappearance.

Isabel Duarte, the McCanns’ lawyer, declined to comment on the libel result but said she had sent Kate and Gerry a copy of the ruling.

Giving evidence in the libel trial last year, Kate McCann told how her son asked if she had hidden his missing sister’s body after hearing Amaral’s claims. She said she and Gerry had taken advice from a child psychologist on how to answer questions asked by Sean, nine, and his twin sister Amelie.

Kate added: “They know Mr Amaral has written a book and about the documentary. They obviously don’t know the detail. We had advice from a child psychologist. He told us to let the twins lead the conversation so if they ask a question try to answer it honestly. I believe what’s in Mr Amaral’s book and the documentary is very distressing to adults. To a child it could be very, very damaging.”

Describing the moment Sean asked her about Amaral’s claims, Kate said: “Sean asked me: ‘Mr Amaral said you hid Madeleine, didn’t he?’ It was October last year. I just said: ‘He did. He said a lot of silly things.’”

She told the judge, Maria de Melo e Castro, that Amaral’s claims were even more damaging because they could prevent potential witnesses from coming forward with information if they believed his insistence that Madeleine is dead.

Amaral, who was dropped from the Madeleine investigation after several blunders, vowed earlier last year to countersue the McCanns. Writing on Facebook, he said he would launch “a lawsuit against the McCann couple and others to be compensated for enormous damage they caused me – moral, professional and financial”.

He added: “The time to judicially react to those who put my privacy, intimacy, freedom of expression and opinion and survival at stake is approaching. They have tried to assassinate me civilly. But due to the support and solidarity of all of you, they were not successful.”

In October last year, the McCanns were awarded £55,000 in libel damages from the publisher of the Sunday Times over an article which alleged that the couple deliberately hindered the search for their daughter.

That settlement came six years after the couple negotiated a £550,000 payment to Madeleine’s fund from Express Newspapers over a series of defamatory articles in the Daily Express, Sunday Express and the Daily Star.

Boko Haram Freed Women Tell of Captivity Horror

Women and children rescued from Boko Haram in Sambisa forest by the Nigeria
military arrive at the internally displaced people's camp in Yola on 2 May 2015

From BBC Africa

Former hostages held by Boko Haram militants in northern Nigeria say some fellow captives were stoned to death as the army approached to rescue them.

The women said Boko Haram fighters started pelting them when they refused to run away as the army came nearer.

A group of nearly 300 women and children was brought out of the vast Sambisa forest to a government camp.

The military says it has rescued more than 700 people in the past week in an offensive against the Islamist group. I'll take that with a large grain of salt.

The women said several were killed in the stoning, but they did not know how many.

Sambisa Forest
The survivors said that when they were initially captured, the militants had killed men and older boys in front of their families before taking women and children into the forest.

Some were forced into marriage.

They said the Islamists never let them out of their sight - not even when they went to the toilet.

"They didn't allow us to move an inch," one of the freed women, Asabe Umaru, told Reuters news agency. "We were kept in one place. We were under bondage."

The women and children were brought to a refugee camp from the vast Sambisa forest.

One woman described how they were fed just one meal a day.

"We were fed only ground dry maize in the afternoons. It was not good for human consumption," Cecilia Abel told Reuters. This led to malnutrition, disease and death.

"Every day, we witnessed the death of one of us and waited for our turn," Umaru, a 24-year-old mother of two, told Reuters.

The women and children travelled for three days on pick-up trucks from the vast Sambisa forest where they were rescued, to the camp in the city of Yola.

Hopefully it's a temporary camp and the survivors will soon be moved farther from the threat of recapture by Boko Haram.

Through interviews, officials have determined that almost all those rescued are from Gumsuri, a village near the town of Chibok, the Associated Press news agency reports.

Yola, Nigeria
It does not appear that any of those released are from the group of nearly 300 Chibok schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram a year ago in a mass abduction that led to worldwide protests calling for the girls' release.

Thousands have been killed in northern Nigeria since Boko Haram began its insurgency in 2009 to create an Islamic state.

In February, Nigeria's military, backed by troops from neighbouring countries, launched a major offensive against the Islamist fighters, recapturing Boko Haram territory taken in the previous year.

Portland Martial Arts Fighter Suicides After Child Sex Abuse Charges

A nationally-recognized mixed martial arts fighter from Hawaii died of an apparent suicide in an Oregon jail, one day before a scheduled court appearance on child sex abuse charges.

Eben Kaneshiro
Kauai native Eben Kaneshiro owned a martial arts school in Portland, Oregon and was accused of sexually abusing a boy.

Now, Oregon officials are looking for more possible victims because of a letter found in Kaneshiro’s jail cell hinting at additional crimes.

Kaneshiro was a veteran MMA fighter and a native of Omao on Kauai. Since 2007, he owned the New Breed Jiu Jitsu Academy in Portland, where he taught several kids.

The studio closed down after his arrest last week on three counts of sex abuse and sodomy of a child under the age of 12.

“He was alone with children most of the time — largest class size I ever saw was 60 at once,” said one father, whose two boys attended the school.

The father spoke to KOIN, KHON2’s sister station in Portland, under condition to keep his identity secret in order to protect his two boys, in case they were victims of Kaneshiro.

New Breed Martial Arts School, Portland, Oregon
“Eben was not particularly friendly with children,” he said. “He didn’t have an aptitude to working with children, not particularly skilled at teaching them.”

The father is shocked by the allegations and never pegged Kaneshiro as a sexual predator.

More victims sought

But according to an Oregon official, Kaneshiro knew the young victim. Now, authorities are hoping more victims come forward.

“It’s really hard to cope with not knowing what’s happening, given he’s confessed to having other victims,” the father said, “and we don’t know what he’s done.”

According to Oregon authorities, if they identify or learn of any victims, they will be referred to victim services. Court proceedings, however, have been canceled due to Kaneshiro’s death.

Prestigious Xavier College Admits Historic Child Sex Abuse

Xavier College, Senior Campus, Melbourne, AU
The Age/ABC
The head of one of Melbourne's top private schools has, for the first time, admitted the extent of child sex abuse that took place on college grounds.

Xavier College principal Chris Hayes said there had been nine cases where children were sexually abused at the school in the 60s and 70s and later reached a settlement.

Another six former students are in the process of having their claims heard.

"I'm certainly saddened that events took place here that led to their distress," he told ABC television on Sunday.

Mr Hayes said no criminal convictions were recorded for the offences.

"There has been no criminal prosecution or matter brought to the criminal court relating to any Xavier Jesuit or Xavier lay teacher referring to sexual abuse at Xavier College," he said.

He said the school was now a very different place.

"I'm very confident things have changed but in saying that we are always vigilant to make sure that the protection of children at the school is paramount," he said.

Xavier College Chapel - obviously not used enough by some priests
The 140 year old Xavier College ranks in the top ten schools in Australia and has an impressive alumni.

Other victims encouraged to come forward

Janusz Skarbek, who attended Xavier for three years in the 1970s, said his time there left him scarred for the rest of his life.

"Corporal punishment was quite common at the time but they went way over the top and in some cases it went as far as sexual abuse," he said.

Mr Skarbek is one of six former students still fighting for compensation from the Jesuits for alleged abuse.

He said he believed there were dozens more victims yet to come forward.

"You can't move on until that's resolved. It's defined my life and my entire family's life," he said.

The school is encouraging any other victims to come forward, to have their claims heard.

"My advice is that if they're troubled by what did take place, please go to the police," Mr Hayes said.

"If they don't feel comfortable in going to the police, they can make contact with the Jesuit professional standards committee." Or, talk to a lawyer!

The Catholic Church previously acknowledged Father John Byrne, who taught at the school in the late 60s and early 70s, was a sex abuser.

However the Jesuit Professional Standards Committee would not answer questions from the ABC about how many other sex abusers had worked at Xavier College.

Survivors said most of the offenders were now dead.

Sex Abuse Gangs in Black Country: Like Rotherham, say Police

Children in the Black Country are being sexually exploited, with gangs similar to those in Rotherham operating in the West Midlands, says a police report

Black Country, for non-Brits, is an area in the West Midlands northwest of Birmingham, England. It was called Black Country because of its many coal mines, coking, iron foundries and steel mills, which produced a lot of blackish pollution.

The heavily-redacted findings reveal there are ‘significant similarities’ between child sex abuse here and the scandal in Yorkshire.

The findings are revealed in a West Midlands Police report entitled Child Sexual Exploitation, which was produced in October last year but has only now been made public.

The report reveals:
Organised gangs, typically of Asian origin, are targeting victims at children’s homes and schools
They are also using hotels and parks for ‘house parties’ to abuse youngsters
Victims are usually, but not always, white females aged 13-16
210 children or young people were sexually exploited or at risk of sexual exploitation in the West Midlands in the first six months of 2014
It is marked as ‘restricted’ and large sections of information have been redacted – blacked out.

In Wolverhampton, the city council’s processes are criticised and the report states: “Inference: There are significant numbers of child sex exploitation victims that are not identified by the Wolverhampton local authority.”

A map showing two ‘clusters’ where there have been ‘high concentrations’ of ‘referrals’ in the city is among the items to have been covered up. Certain postcodes and a list of areas in Wolverhampton have also been redacted.

None of the councils in Wolverhampton, Walsall, Sandwell and Dudley have escaped criticism in the report, which was compiled in October last year but has only now been made available to the public.

Other hotspots in the region are Lye, Brierley Hill, Tipton, Smethwick and Rowley Regis in Sandwell, Willenhall and Walsall town centre.

But council bosses don’t know how many children are being abused and some of the information needed to identify abuse is ‘non-existent’.

Abuse is a top priority, say police
West Midlands Police said officers ‘across the force’ had in the past year been trained how to deal with child sex exploitation and tackling the problem was a ‘top priority’.
The force recently created 10 ‘child sex exploitation co-ordinator’ roles, one for each of its 10 local policing units.
Assistant Chief Constable Carl Foulkes said: “Child sex exploitation affects all communities and remains a top priority for us – nothing is more important in policing than protecting vulnerable people.
“The responsibility of tackling this lies with every police officer, staff member, PCSO and special constable.
“Over the last 12 months the force has carried out extensive work to train officers across the force in identifying and dealing with child sex exploitation so we can improve the outcomes for victims.
“A primary role of a co-ordinator is to review all missing and absent child records and record the incident appropriately.
“If the assessment is that the child has been exposed to child sex exploitation, Children’s Services are informed and a professionals meeting is conducted, whereby all details and information is shared.”

All the Black Country councils have come under fire for not sharing enough information about potential victims.

The 125-page report was released by West Midlands Police after a Freedom of Information request. But lots of details remain redacted. It reveals that between January and June last year, 210 children were identified by councils as having been ‘sexually exploited or at risk of sexual exploitation’. But a lack of processes to identify potential victims means there could be many more slipping through the net.

Police said it was ‘difficult’ to say how many were being abused, or at risk of being abused. The report compares the situation to Rotherham, where at least 1,400 youngsters were sexually exploited by gangs between 1997 and 2013. It states: “An assessment of all child sex exploitation profiles produced by West Midlands Police since 2010 identifies a consistent profile in relation to victims, locations and offenders. There are significant similarities to the Rotherham victim/offender and location profiles. It remains difficult to quantify how many child abuse crimes or incidents have actually occurred within the West Midlands.”

Offenders are said to be typically Asian, of Pakistani origin, aged 17 to 40. Most victims are white females aged 13 to 16.

Many are known for going missing. The report adds: “Targeting of victims takes place mainly at children’s homes and schools. Offending typically takes place in private houses or hotels often under the guise of ‘house’ parties. Offences also take place in parks.”

At the time of the report, there was ‘no specific process’ for identifying child sexual exploitation in Wolverhampton. Bosses insist this has now been rectified. Police and Crime Commissioner David Jamieson said: “The way to tackle hidden crimes is to bring them into the open. I am pleased this information is in the public domain.”

Well, at least that which was not redacted. But why did it take 6 months and a Freedom of Information request to make it public? You are saying the right things Commissioner, but do I trust that you are genuine? Not yet!

Children’s Safe Harbor Recognizes 1,000-plus Child Sex Abuse Victims in Montgomery Co.

Montgomery Co. Courier

The Children’s Safe Harbor in Conroe treated a record 1,053 children last year that had been sexually abused, according to Executive Director Dr. Victoria Constance.

To recognize the victims, the harbor joined community stakeholders this week in displaying 1,053 pinwheels on the grounds of the Alan B. Sadler Administrative Building in downtown Conroe.

Montgomery County commissioners granted permission for the ceremony to recognize April as National Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month.

Constance said April 30 was chosen as the day to display the pinwheels to show each one represents the life of a child who walked through the Safe Harbor’s doors in 2014.

“A pinwheel moves with the air, so there’s movement forward,” Constance said. “When you see those, they’re actually children’s lives that we have impacted and I believe we’ve positively impacted these children.”

The Safe Harbor has been in Conroe for 16 years, but never saw this many children in a single year, Constance said.

Surpassing 1,000 new cases of child sexual abuse ranks the Safe Harbor, located in rural-suburban Conroe, along with other urban centers across the nation.

Constance said Montgomery County’s population growth is one of the factors driving up the number of cases.

“There’s a certain number of children that are going to come forward and as population grows, there are more children,” Constance said. ”We are doing a better job of serving these children.”

First Assistant Phil Grant called the Safe Harbor “an incredible resource” for abused and neglected children in the community.

“As terrible as the event is that is represented by these pinwheels, there is victory in the end when we see the perpetrators punished and children made whole again.” he said.

Grant added that Safe Harbor, along with law enforcement and the DA’s Office, are working together to see children emerge as survivors, noting that it is unfortunate the children find their way into the criminal justice system as victims of physical or sexual abuse.

The Safe Harbor wanted to illustrate the two-part process of healing and justice stressed at by the child victims advocacy group.

“(The commissioners) wanted it outside of their building, which I think is a beautiful thing,” Constance said. “It’s there where the public can see for one day how many children’s lives are impacted. Let the healing and justice move forward because their lives are going to continue to touch this entire community.”

Children's Safe Harbor (I believe), Conroe, Tx
Montgomery County has a population of about 500,000, leaving about 112,000 children under 18 years of age. Safe Harbour has treated about 1% of all children in the county. Statistically, 15 - 20% of children are sexually abused in the US, leaving 14,000 to 19,000 sexually abused children untreated in the county unless they are getting help from another source.

Safe Harbor should be congratulated for their excellent work, God bless them. But is anything being done to help the other children, or do they simply fall through the very large cracks in government floors?

If governments can't stop the incredible amount of sexual abuse of children, the very least they can do is to take responsibility for the care and treatment of every single victim.

Bus Staff in India Attack Girl (14) and Throw Her to Her Death

I'm beginning to fear that reforming Indian men may be impossible. This is nearly identical to the gang-rape, torture and murder of a student in New Delhi 21/2 years ago. So what did they learn? Apparently nothing!

There are three stories below presenting the rape or molestation of 5 girls or women. I have little hope for Indian girls/women to ever be safe from predatory men; it is just too deeply ingrained. Van Linschoten was right 400 years ago, they are the most lecherous of men.

Politicians seek resignation of chief minister of Punjab whose son owns bus company

The death of a teenage girl in India’s northern Punjab state, after being thrown off a moving bus by staff who tried to molest her, triggered a furore in the country’s parliament yesterday.

Opposition parties demanded the resignation of provincial chief minister Prakash Singh Badal, whose son owns the company operating the bus involved. The girl (14) was pushed out near Moga, a small town 390km north of New Delhi, on Wednesday.

Mr Badal’s son, Sukhbir Singh, is the state’s deputy chief minister and their Akali Dal Party is an alliance partner of prime minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party.

Police said the teenager, along with her mother Shinder Kaur and brother Akashdeep, was hurled from the bus, after the driver, conductor and other staff tried to molest her. Police have arrested the driver and conductor, and are searching for others involved. (Indian buses are staffed by several people. Don't ask me what they all do aside from gang-raping girls).

“The incident reveals the lawlessness and anarchy that prevails in the state,” Punjab’s Congress leader Pratap Singh Bajwa said yesterday.

“The transport company owned by the Badals has always been given preferential treatment,” he added.

Aam Aadmi (or Common Man’s Party) MP Bhagwant Mann said the police never checked or impounded Badal’s buses, even if they were involved in accidents.

“The Badals are a law unto themselves in the state and need to be curbed,” he said.

The incident is reminiscent of the December 2012 fatal gang rape of a 23-year-old medical student on a moving bus in Delhi. The crime outraged the entire country and led to more stringent laws against rape, voyeurism, stalking and acid attacks on women. But these have not proved to be a deterrent. In Delhi – known as India’s “rape capital” – over 300 rapes were reported in January and February.

The India Express

The family of 13-year-old Arshdeep Kaur who died after being pushed out of a bus here late Wednesday while resisting an alleged molestation bid has refused a postmortem and cremation. They are demanding registration of a case against Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal, who owns Orbit Company, to which the bus belonged.

Arshdeep’s father Sukhdev Singh also demanded that the four accused arrested by the police be paraded in front of his wife, who witnessed the alleged molestation. “Police have till now not even shown them to us for identification,” Sukhdev Singh said. Arshdeep’s mother, who was also pushed out of the bus, is hospitalised.

For more than 48 hours now, the body of Arshdeep, who studied in Class VII of a government school in Moga’s Lande Ke village, has been lying in the mortuary of Civil Hospital, Moga.

There are a number of versions of this story floating around, the above seem to be the most popular.
Conflicting information includes:
Both Mother and daughter were molested
Mother and daughter jumped off the bus
The daughter was anywhere from 13 to 16 years old.

The Delhi bus referred to at the top of this post

Within hours of the above story, a second horror story emerged from the same small area:

Indo-Asian News Service
A young woman in Punjab’s Moga district has alleged that she was gang-raped by her friend’s husband and his friends, police said on Friday. The woman’s claim came just hours after the horror story of a girl being killed after being pushed out of a moving bus by her molesters.

The victim, aged 23, claimed that she was gang-raped by her friend’s husband and others on the intervening night of April 29 and 30 (Wednesday and Thursday) at a secluded house in Marhi Mustafa village near Moga, 180 km from here.

Police have registered a case of rape against her friend’s husband and others following the complaint on Thursday.

No arrest has been made so far.

The victim claimed that she had gone to meet her friend at the latter’s house on Wednesday night along with her boyfriend. They decided to stay there overnight.

The friend’s husband came home drunk late in the night with seven other friends. They allegedly thrashed her boyfriend and took her to the tube-well room in a secluded part of the village.

She was gang-raped by the eight men after confining her to the room and allowed to leave the room only on Thursday morning.

Moga, Punjab province, India

The following story is a year and a half old, but I think it's important to know the level of debauchery of Indian men.

Delhi’s shame: 72 hours, 3 gangrapes - 2013
Express News Service
| New Delhi | Published on:November 16, 2013 12:57 am

Three incidents of gang-rape were reported from the capital in the last 72 hours. So far, police said they had arrested four persons in connection with the cases.

One
In the first incident, reported from Shalimar Bagh on Wednesday, a 16-year-old girl studying in a private school in the area was gangraped allegedly by her classmate and his three friends. Police said the classmate and one of his friends had been arrested.

In her statement to police, the girl said the classmate and she had become friends in March this year. She claimed that he forced her to engage in sexual activities, and later began blackmailing her claiming that he would tell her friends and others about their relationship. She claimed that he also forced her to have sexual relations with three of his friends.

According to police, the girl claimed that she did not report the matter to anyone and continued to be blackmailed. She finally informed her parents, following which police were informed.

Two
In another incident, a 27-year-old airline ticketing agent was sedated and gangraped, allegedly by two men. Police said she was gangraped in her office, which is located in a shopping complex in Outer Delhi'’s Pitampura area.

In her statement to police, the ticketing agent said she knew both the men. She told police that the men had gone to her office on the pretext of booking tickets. There, she claimed, they offered her a drink laced with sedatives. After she fell unconscious, they allegedly locked the door and raped her, the woman told police.

The accused, identified as Sunil Chabbra and Sunil Sehgal, have been arrested, police said.

Three
In a third incident, a 27-year-old married woman has alleged that she was gangraped by four men at knife-point at her residence on Thursday night.

According to police, the woman and her husband, who lived in Madhya Pradesh, are separated. They have two children, police said.

In her statement to police, the woman claimed that around 11 pm on Thursday, her husband’s brother and uncle barged into the house. They were accompanied by two others, she claimed.

The four held her at knife-point and raped her, she told police.

Police said the woman was reportedly alone at home at the time of the incident.

All four men have been identified and a police team has been sent to Madhya Pradesh to trace them, police said.

Happy Valley Pastor Not so Happy Now

A Multnomah County Sheriff's deputy takes Happy Valley pastor Mike Sperou
into custody after he was found guilty in Multnomah County district court on
and sentenced to 20 years in prison for abusing a girl who grew up in his church
Randy L. Rasmussen | The Oregonian/OregonLive

Pastor Mike Sperou was sentenced Thursday to 20 years in prison for sexually abusing a girl who grew up in his Happy Valley church.

Two sheriff's deputies led Sperou away in handcuffs while several supporters sobbed. He didn't address the court.

A Multnomah County jury of six women and six men had convicted Sperou moments earlier on three counts of first-degree sexual penetration of a person under the age of 12. The jury deliberated just 2½ hours after hearing 12 days of conflicting testimony.

Circuit Judge Cheryl A. Albrecht also ordered Sperou, 64, to register as a sex offender and to pay the victim $20,000 for her ongoing counseling and mental health therapy. When Sperou is released from prison, he must remain under supervision for an additional 10 years.

Victim Shannon Clark said by phone that she was "thrilled" with the sentence, for her the closing chapter in a long legal struggle. Clark was among seven young girls who complained in 1997 that Sperou had abused her while her family was part of the North Clackamas Bible Community. After a Portland police investigation, prosecutors declined to file charges and dropped the case.

But the case was reinvestigated in 2013 and 2014, leading to new charges against Sperou based on new allegations.

"I am very happy that someone believed me -- after all this time," said Clark, 29.

Deputy District Attorney Chris Mascal said she was pleased that the jury saw Sperou's  pattern of abusing helpless children – now adult women.

"They've waited a long time for justice," Mascal said. "I'm happy they finally got it."

Defense attorney Steven L. Sherlag said he intends to appeal Sperou's conviction to the Oregon Court of Appeals. He said the judge's ruling constituted "reversible error" when she allowed six additional women not listed as victims in the case -- Jennifer Olajuyin, Bryn Garrett, Rachel Schackart, Emily Bertram, Amy Robinson and Jessica Watson --  to offer graphic testimony of their experiences with Sperou when they were girls.

Hmmm. That does sound legally questionable.

Albrecht said she allowed the testimony only for the jury to decide if Sperou's contact with Clark was accidental or if it was part of a pattern of his behavior. If the appeals court agrees with Sherlag, the case would be sent back to Multnomah County.

"I am confident I will see us back in trial within two years," Sherlag said.

The trial has been unusual in several ways.

There was no physical evidence and the case turned solely on "he said-she said" testimony about incidents in the 1980s and 1990s.

Excessive church loyalty
The allegations pitted family members against one another. The parents of three women testified that they didn't believe their daughters' complaints. Those parents remain loyal to Sperou and the church, where they continue to hold positions of responsibility.

So their identity is, in part, invested in the church, and there would need to be some acknowledgement of guilt by association for their own daughter's molesting. That's a big pill to swallow, but it's better than tearing your family apart by calling your daughter a liar over what was, arguably, the worst thing that happened to her in her life.

Meanwhile, parents of the other four women blamed their former friends for protecting and enabling Sperou. After a couple of sharp verbal exchanges in the courthouse hallway, the judge has asked sheriff's deputies to keep an eye on the opposing camps.

The case also is unusual for The Oregonian/OregonLive, which generally doesn't disclose the names of possible sex crimes victims. But all seven women connected with the case came forward and asked that their names be made public.

The jury returned a mixed verdict on the three charges against Sperou, all Class A felonies. One count relating to an encounter in 1993-94 drew an 11-1 vote to convict. Another referring to the same time frame, drew a 10-2 vote to convict. The third, relating to an incident in 1995-96, also drew a 10-2 conviction.

In Oregon, 10 guilty votes are the minimum to convict in all but the most serious crimes.

Mount Scott and Happy Valley, Oregon
Christian community
The trial has brought into focus the North Clackamas Bible Community, a small, orthodox Christian church whose core members live communally in a group of rental homes that straddle the city limits of Portland and Happy Valley. Sunday services, along with weekly Bible study and language classes, are held in the homes.

At its peak, the church had about 60 members, but now has about 27. About  a third of the members left the church in 1997 after the girls accused Sperou of molesting them.

Supporters say the church draws its strength from the extraordinary faith and commitment of its members, who are dedicated to scholarship and applying biblical principles in their daily lives. But some of those who left said the church plummeted when Sperou began drinking heavily, taking drugs, having affairs with the wives in church families – and eventually sexually abusing young girls.

Yeah, that would do it!

Sex-abuse allegations against pastor
In 1996, seven girls told police that they were sexually abused by the pastor of a small Portland-area church. After an investigation, prosecutors declined to pursue the case, calling it unwinnable. Now the pastor faces new charges based on new allegations from one of the women.

Sperou admitted that he once drank heavily and took drugs to treat what was then-undiagnosed post-traumatic stress disorder from his combat service in the Vietnam War. But he said he has since remained sober and is under Veterans Affairs medical care for his PTSD.

Throughout the trial, the prosecutor painted a picture of a charismatic pastor who dominated and manipulated church members, convincing them that he has the highest and best understanding of the Bible and could guide them toward spiritual improvement.

By contrast, Sherlag worked to show that memories degrade and evolve over time. He said Sperou's accusers likely weren't lying, but suffered from memory errors introduced by repeatedly retelling their stories, by improper interviews that suggested certain acts may have occurred, by pressure from their parents and by "contamination" – discussions with other alleged victims who may have had axes to grind.

A jury poll revealed that only one juror voted to acquit Sperou on all charges. The juror was not available for comment.

200 Yazidi Women and Girls Released by ISIS, but to What?

Nine-year-old girl pregnant after being gang raped by at least 10 Islamic State (ISIS) paeodphiles

Girls as young as 9 are being raped and tortured by ISIS savages, according to aid workers in Iraq.

God have mercy on these women and bring this great evil to an end soon
Express - Hundreds of Yazidi women and children who were taken hostage by the brutal regime were released this week after more than eight months in captivity.

But volunteers in huge make-shift refugee camps have given a distressing account of trauma and abuse at the hand of the jihadist group, which continues to wage a bloody war across the region.

Charity workers said one nine-year-old girl, who was left pregnant after being raped by at least 10 different men, was so young and weak she was likely to die during childbirth. “Even a caesarean section is dangerous,” Yousif Daoud, a Canadian-based aid worker who recently returned from the region, said. “The abuse she has suffered left her mentally and physically traumatized.”

The freed group of 200 girls and women was taken hostage last summer after intense fighting in northern Iraq.

Tens of thousands of Yazidis – a minority group based mainly in the Kurdistan region of the country – were attacked and besieged on a mountain side in August 2014. Hundreds were killed during the fighting and estimates put the number of girls still being held by extremist fighters at up to 4,000.

the blonde-haired, blue-eyed gene
Aid workers said releasing the 200-strong group of girls and women this week might have been done simply to shame them when they returned to their families.  "Sending back those girls and women is a way of shaming the whole community,” Mr Daoud said.

“I don’t know what the future would be for their babies. “The girls and women don’t want them. They have suffered so much they just want to forget.  “If they are married, their husbands won’t take them back if they are pregnant. And it’s clear that the babies will never be accepted.”

There are fears that some of the pregnant women will attempt to have an abortion, but healthcare provisions are so poor that many will die in the process, aid workers claim.

The Rape of Berlin

Treptower Park's Soviet Memorial, in Berlin
But some call this memorial the Tomb of the Unknown Rapist
The USSR's role in the defeat of Nazi Germany World War Two 70 years ago is seen as the nation's most glorious moment. But there is another story - of mass rapes by Soviet soldiers of German women in the dying days of the war.

Some readers may find this story disturbing.

Dusk is falling in Treptower Park on the outskirts of Berlin and I am looking up at a statue dramatically outlined against a lilac sky. Twelve metres (40ft) high, it depicts a Soviet soldier grasping a sword in one hand and a small German girl in the other, and stamping on a broken swastika.

This is the final resting place for 5,000 of the 80,000 Soviet troops who fell in the Battle of Berlin between 16 April and 2 May 1945.

The colossal proportions of the monument reflect the scale of the sacrifice. At the top of a long flight of steps, you can peer into the base of the statue, which is lit up like a religious shrine. An inscription saying that the Soviet people saved European civilisation from fascism catches my eye.

But some call this memorial the Tomb of the Unknown Rapist.

Stalin's troops assaulted an uncounted number of women as they fought their way to the German capital, though this was rarely mentioned after the war in Germany - West or East - and is a taboo subject in Russia even today.

The Russian media regularly dismiss talk of the rapes as a Western myth, though one of many sources that tells the story of what happened is a diary kept by a young Soviet officer.

Vladimir Gelfand - Jewish lieutenant from Ukraine
Vladimir Gelfand, a young Jewish lieutenant from central Ukraine, wrote with extraordinary frankness from 1941 through to the end of the war, despite the Soviet military's ban on diaries, which were seen as a security risk.

The so far unpublished manuscript paints a picture of disarray in the regular battalions - miserable rations, lice, routine anti-Semitism and theft, with men even stealing their comrades' boots.

In February 1945, Gelfand was stationed by the Oder River dam, preparing for the final push on Berlin, and he describes how his comrades surrounded and overpowered a battalion of women fighters.

"The captured German female cats declared they were avenging their dead husbands," he writes. "They must be destroyed without mercy. Our soldiers suggest stabbing them through their genitals but I would just execute them."

It gets worse.

One of the most revealing passages in Gelfand's diary is dated 25 April, once he had reached Berlin. Gelfand was whirling around on a bicycle by the River Spree, the first time he'd ever ridden one, when he came across a group of German women carrying suitcases and bundles.

Vladimir Gelfand on his bicycle
In broken German, he asked them where they were going and why they had left their homes.

"With horror on their faces, they told me what had happened on the first night of the Red Army's arrival," he writes.

"'They poked here,' explained the beautiful German girl, lifting up her skirt, 'all night. They were old, some were covered in pimples and they all climbed on me and poked - no less than 20 men,' she burst into tears.

"'They raped my daughter in front of me,' her poor mother added, 'and they can still come back and rape her again.' This thought horrified everyone.

"'Stay here,' the girl suddenly threw herself at me, 'sleep with me! You can do whatever you want with me, but only you!'"

By this stage, German soldiers had been guilty of sexual violence and other horrors in the Soviet Union for almost four years, as Gelfand had become aware as he fought his way to Berlin.

"He went through so many villages in which the Nazis had killed everyone, even small children. And he saw evidence of rape," says his son, Vitaly.

Vitaly Gelfand discovered his father's diary after he died
The Wehrmacht was supposedly a well-ordered force of Aryans who would never contemplate sex with untermenschen.

But the ban was ignored, says Oleg Budnitsky, a historian at the Higher School of Economics in Moscow. Nazi commanders were in fact so concerned about venereal disease that they established a chain of military brothels throughout the occupied territories.

It's hard to find direct evidence of how the German soldiers treated Russian women - many victims never survived - but in the German-Russian Museum in Berlin, director Jorg Morre shows me a photograph taken in Crimea from a German soldier's personal wartime album. A woman's corpse is sprawled on the ground.

"It looks like she was killed by raping, or after the rape. Her skirt is pulled up and the hands are in front of the face," he says.

"It's a shocking photo. We had discussions in the museum, should we show the photos - this is war, this is sexual violence under German policy in the Soviet Union. We are showing war. Not talking about war but showing it."

As the Red Army advanced into what the Soviet press called "the lair of the fascist beast" posters encouraged troops to show their anger: "Soldier: You are now on German soil. The hour of revenge has struck!"

A Soviet soldier struggles to take a woman's bicycle in Berlin
In fact, the political department of the 19th Army, which fought its way into Germany along the Baltic Coast, declared that a true Soviet soldier would be so full of hatred that he would be repulsed by sex with Germans. But once again soldiers proved the ideologists wrong.

While researching his 2002 book, Berlin, The Downfall, historian Antony Beevor found documents about sexual violence in the state archive of the Russian Federation. They were sent by the NKVD, the secret police, to their boss, Lavrentiy Beria, in late 1944.

"These were passed on to Stalin," says Beevor. "You can actually see from the ticks whether they've been read or not - and they report on the mass rapes in East Prussia and the way that German women would try to kill their children, and kill themselves, to avoid such a fate."

Another wartime diary, this time kept by the fiancee of an absent German soldier, shows that some women adapted to the appalling circumstances, in order to survive.

Starting on 20 April 1945, 10 days before Hitler's suicide, the anonymous author is, like Vladimir Gelfand, brutally honest, with razor-sharp powers of observation and occasional flashes of gallows humour.

Describing herself as "a pale-faced blonde always dressed in the same winter coat", the diarist paints vivid pictures of her neighbours in the bomb shelter beneath her Berlin apartment block, including a "young man in grey trousers and horn-rimmed glasses who on closer inspection turns out to be a young woman" and three elderly sisters, "all dressmakers, huddled together like a big black pudding".

As they await the arrival of the Red Army, they joke "better a Russky on top than a Yank overhead" - rape is preferable to being pulverised by bombs. But when the soldiers reach their basement and try to haul women out, they beg the diarist to use her Russian language skills and complain to the Soviet command.

Braving the chaos on the rubble strewn streets, she manages to find a senior officer. He shrugs his shoulders. Despite Stalin's decree banning violence against civilians, he says, "It happens anyway."

The officer returns to the cellar with her and reprimands the soldiers, but one is seething with fury.

"'What do you mean? What did the Germans do to our women!' He is screaming: 'They took my sister and…' The officer calms the man down and gets them outside."

But when the diarist steps back into the corridor to check they have gone, the men have been lying in wait and grab her. She is brutally raped and nearly strangled. The terrified neighbours, or "cave dwellers" as she calls them, had slammed the basement door shut.

"Finally the two iron levers open. Everyone stares at me," she writes. "My stockings are down to my shoes, I'm still holding on to what's left of my suspender belt. I start yelling 'You pigs! Here they rape me twice in a row and you leave me lying like a piece of dirt!'"

Eventually the diarist realises that she needs to find one "wolf" to stave off gang rape by the "male beasts". The relationship between aggressor and victim becomes less violent, more transactional - and more ambiguous. She shares her bed with a senior officer from Leningrad with whom she discusses literature and the meaning of life.

"By no means could it be said that the major is raping me," she writes. "Am I doing it for bacon, butter, sugar, candles, canned meat? To some extent I'm sure I am. In addition, I like the major and the less he wants from me as a man, the more I like him as a person."

Many of the diarist's neighbours made similar deals with the conquerors in the ruins of Berlin.

When the diary was published in German in 1959 under the title A Woman in Berlin, the author's frank account of the choices she made to survive was attacked for "besmirching the honour" of German women. Not surprisingly, she refused to allow the book to be republished until after her death.

Seventy years after the end of the war, new research on sexual violence committed by all the Allied forces - American, British and French as well as Soviet - is still emerging. But for years the subject slid under the official radar. Few reported it and even fewer would listen.

Besides the social stigma, in East Germany it was sacrilegious to criticise Soviet heroes who had defeated fascism while across the Wall in the West, the guilt for Nazi crimes made German suffering unmentionable.

But in 2008, there was a film adaptation of the Berlin Woman's diary called Anonyma, starring the well-known German actress Nina Hoss. The film had a cathartic effect in Germany and encouraged many women to come forward, including Ingeborg Bullert.

Ingeborg Bullert
Ingeborg: "My mother liked to boast that her daughter hadn't been touched"
Ingeborg, aged 90, now lives in Hamburg in a flat filled with photos of cats and books about the theatre. She was 20 in 1945, dreamed of becoming an actress and lived with her mother in an upmarket street in Berlin's Charlottenberg district.

When the Soviet assault on the city began, like the woman diarist, she took refuge in the cellar of her building.

"Suddenly there were tanks in our street and everywhere the bodies of Russian and German soldiers", she recalls. "I remember the dreadful whining sound made by those Russian bombs - we called them Stalinorgels (Stalin organs)."

During a lull in the air raid, Ingeborg left the cellar and ran upstairs to look for a piece of string to use as a wick for a lamp. "Suddenly there were two Russians pointing their pistols at me," she says. "One of them forced me to expose myself and raped me, and then they changed places and the other one raped me as well. I thought I would die, that they would kill me."

Ingeborg didn't talk about her ordeal at the time, or for decades afterwards - she said it was too difficult. "My mother liked to boast that her daughter hadn't been touched," she says.

Ingeborg Bullert
Ingeborg: "I thought I was going to die"
But the rapes had affected women in households across Berlin. Ingeborg recalls that women between the ages of 15 and 55 were ordered to get tested for sexually transmitted diseases. "You needed the medical certificate to get the food stamps and I remember that all the doctors doing these certificates, had waiting rooms full of women."

What was the scale of the rapes? The most often quoted number is a staggering 100,000 women in Berlin and two million on German territory. That figure - hotly debated - was extrapolated from scant surviving medical records.

In a former munitions factory which now houses the State Archive, Martin Luchterhand shows me an armful of blue cardboard folders. These contain abortion records dated July to October 1945 from Neukolln, just one of Berlin's 24 districts - it's a small miracle that they survived intact.

Abortions were illegal in Germany according to Article 218 of the penal code, but Luchterhand says "there was a small window for those women because of that special situation of the mass rapes in 1945".

The written notes

Folders of notes
Altogether 995 pleas for abortion were approved by this one district office in Berlin office between June 1945 to 1946. The files contain over 1,000 fragile scraps of paper of different colours and sizes. In childish round handwriting, one girl testifies that she was assaulted in the living room of her home in front of her parents.

We will probably never know the true scale of the rapes. Soviet military tribunals and other sources remain classified. The Russian parliament recently passed a law which says that anyone who denigrates Russia's record in World War Two could face fines and up to five years in prison.

Vera Dubina, a young historian at the University of Humanities in Moscow, says she knew nothing of the rapes until a scholarship took her to Berlin. She later wrote a paper on the subject but struggled to get it published.

"The Russian media reacted very aggressively," she says. "People only want to hear about our glorious victory in the Great Patriotic War and now it is getting harder to do proper research."

Women in the ruins of Berlin (1945)
It's the fate of history to be rewritten to suit the agenda of the present. That's why first-hand accounts are so valuable - from those who brave the subject now, in their old age, and from those younger voices who put pencil to paper on the spot.

Vitaly Gelfand, son of the Red Army diarist Vladimir Gelfand, doesn't deny that many Soviet soldiers showed great bravery and sacrifice in World War Two - but that's not the whole story, he says.

Recently Vitaly did an interview on Russian radio, which triggered some anti-Semitic trolling on social media, saying the diary's a fake and he should clear off to Israel (he has in fact lived in Berlin for the last 20 years). Yet he is hoping the diary will be published in Russia later this year. Parts of it have been translated into German and Swedish.

"If people don't want to know the truth, they're just deluding themselves", he says. "The entire world understands it, Russia understands it and the people behind those new laws about defaming the past, even they understand it. We can't move forward until we look back."

Red Army soldier raises the Soviet flag over the Reichstag in Berlin

The Battle for Berlin (April - May 1945)

After the Red Army captured Vienna, Joseph Stalin ordered his forces on to Berlin, determined to take the city before US forces

Two and a half million Red Army troops, 6,000 tanks and more than 40,000 artillery pieces were deployed, supported by thousands of aircraft

After heavy fighting and substantial losses, by 21 April, Red Army soldiers had entered the outlying suburbs of Berlin

In a staff conference on 22 April Adolf Hitler came close to admitting defeat but instead resolved to fight on, directing troops from his underground bunker

As Soviet forces took the city, it is estimated that close to 100,000 women were raped by Red Army soldiers

On 30 April Hitler killed himself and by 2 May the Reichstag had fallen
