‘450,000 UK Child Abuse Cases in 2 yrs’ – Report

As many as 450,000 children are thought to have been abused in England in the two years up to March 2014, according to a major new report.

Some 50,000 cases of sexual abuse were recorded by police and local authorities during this period, but the Office of the Children’s Commissioner (OCC) believes this is a major underestimate.

A study by the OCC found that around 85 percent of sexually abused young people are not receiving help and treatment.

These statistics (estimates) do not include girls who suffer female genital mutilation or become child brides, both of which I consider child sex abuse. I don't doubt that these would push the estimate up close to half a million.

In cases where children are found abusing other children, the report blamed easy access to the internet for creating a generation who are imitating what they see online.

It's not access to the internet that is the problem, it is access to pornography that is the problem. If the internet had no pornography on it, there would be no issue here.

Police spokesperson for child protection and abuse Simon Bailey said children believe the abuse is normal behavior.

“I have had cases whereby 12, 13-year-old boys are abusing four, five-year-old girls because what they have seen online they just thought was normal behavior,” said Bailey.

“The scale of abuse identified within the OCC report is horrific and it confirms my belief that the police service has been dealing with the tip of the iceberg,” he added.

The report, titled ‘Protecting children from harm: A critical assessment of child sexual abuse in the family network in England and priorities for action,’ said that most abuse cases involve relatives.

Two thirds of sexual abuse cases, both known and unknown to the authorities, are believed to be perpetrated by family members.

The report’s authors called for urgent action to identify and prevent child abuse in England.

Most victims remain unidentified because police and social services rely on children to speak out about what they are suffering.

One suggestion in the report is to give children as young as five lessons at school to teach them about relationships and encourage them to discuss concerns.

Children’s Commissioner for England Anne Longfield said preventing abuse is a top priority.

“In recent years the terrible experiences of sexual abuse that some children have suffered in institutions or at the hands of groups of perpetrators have come to light, and preventing and tackling these been made a priority,” she said.

Longfield said it is necessary to urgently address child sexual abuse within families and trusted circles.

Culture of Rape Getting Some Support from University of British Columbia

The head of the University of British Columbia has apologized to the women in a CBC special The Fifth Estate investigation into sexual assault.

"I want to apologize to the women in these cases who feel they have been let down by our university," Martha Piper, 
interim president and vice-chancellor, said in a statement issued online.

"We admire the courage of the women who came forward to bring attention to this crucial issue."

Despite the apology, one of the former students in the CBC's story, Glynnis Kirchmeier, says she plans to file a complaint with the BC Human Rights Tribunal by the end of the year. She's asking anyone who reported sexual misconduct to the school during the past 20 years to contact her at ubcsexualassault@gmail.com.

"UBC has a legal duty to provide a harassment-free environment," she said. "UBC's chance to do the right thing is over ... The university is going to be tried in the court of public opinion, and then it is going to answer to the BC Human Rights Tribunal, and I suspect it will be tried in civil court as well."

I'll bet they wished now that they had actually acted before the Fifth Estate story forced them to.

Kirchmeier says when she approached UBC's Equity Inclusion Office about a sexual misconduct she witnessed, she was told in effect to keep quiet.

In School of Secrets, which will be livestreamed online Monday evening, the fifth estate reveals that UBC took more than a year and a half to act against a grad student despite mounting complaints of harassment or sexual assault by at least six women on campus.

Piper acknowledged that "the process took too long" and that it was "frustrating and time-consuming."

"I appreciate the light the women have shone on this issue," Piper said, pledging to create a sexual assault policy that will handle complaints "in a more timely and effective manner."

That is...before the Fifth Estate airs their dirty laundry.

"We will be reviewing the steps that were taken in these cases to determine how they might have been handled more effectively and expeditiously," she said.

Delayed investigation

The women allege a 28-year-old PhD student in the history department committed a wide range of offensive acts against them from inappropriate touching to sexual assault, starting at least as far back as the spring of 2013.

The first formal allegations against him were brought to the university in spring 2014.

In one case, a woman went to university officials to get UBC to take action, but says the university dismissed her complaint because the alleged assault took place off campus.  

UBC officials at another point urged mediation between the female students and the PhD student, which the women refused. One of them said it was not appropriate to have to sit in a room with someone alleged to have sexually assaulted them. 

The university quietly expelled the grad student last week. He told the fifth estate he is appealing the decision.

And why not? Surely he has a right to sexually assault UBC girls? That's the impression you get by the lack of action by UBC administration.

Margaret Thatcher blocked plans to strip a paedophile diplomat of his knighthood, according to confidential Government papers published for the first time today.

The then Prime Minister allowed Sir Peter Hayman to keep his knighthood even though she knew he was a member of the Paedophile Information Exchange (PIE) and had recently been convicted of gross indecency with another man in a public toilet.

Peter Haymen was a high level diplomat and may have been a "long-time deputy director of MI6", as well as High Commissioner to Canada.

Foreign Office files obtained by this newspaper under Freedom of Information laws show that Mrs Thatcher chose to warn Sir Peter – who died in 1992 – about his future conduct rather than strip him of the knighthood.

Apparently, gay sex in public toilets and pedophilia were acceptable behaviour in Maggie's economy. 

On July 11, 1984, Sir Robin Butler – her principal private secretary – told the Foreign Office: ‘I am writing to confirm that the Prime Minister agrees that Sir Peter Hayman should be warned that if there were any repetition of the offence for which he has recently been convicted and fined, there should be no alternative but that he should be stripped of his honours, but that no such recommendation should be put forward at the present time.’

Details of Mrs Thatcher’s intervention come just two months after The Mail on Sunday revealed that she approved a knighthood for the late Sir Cyril Smith – even though she knew police had investigated him over allegations of child sex abuse. 

And in 2013 it emerged that she had tried to secure a knighthood for the disgraced DJ Jimmy Savile, even though civil servants regarded him as a ‘strange personality’.

At the time of Sir Robin’s letter, Mrs Thatcher would have been aware of both Sir Peter’s recent conviction and his links to PIE.

In 1981 Tory MP Geoffrey Dickens had used parliamentary privilege to brand the retired diplomat a paedophile in the House of Commons. He was responding to the revelation that in 1978 the then retired Sir Peter, a father of two and former High Commissioner to Canada, had left paedophilia-related material on a bus.

The Foreign Office papers show there was strong support for stripping him of all of his honours – but suggest that Mrs Thatcher may have resisted because she wanted to avoid dragging the Queen into a scandal.

On June 27, 1984, Sir Antony Acland – the Permanent Under Secretary at the Foreign Office – told then Foreign Secretary Sir Geoffrey Howe that the calls for action would be difficult to ignore. He said that those high up in the Order of St Michael and St George – an order of chivalry – felt that ‘officers of the Order should recommend that he be stripped, since to do nothing might offend Members of the Order, and possibly members of the public.

‘The Dean of St Paul’s also took the view, because of his anxiety to protect children, although Sir Peter was not convicted of any charge in this respect.’

But he warned that stripping Sir Peter of his honours could prove problematic. ‘The matter is further complicated since Sir Peter holds the CVO – the Queen’s personal order,’ Sir Antony said.

He added that if he were stripped of the knighthood, ‘he would have to lose the CVO and MBE also, so the Queen is to some extent already involved’.

In the papers, Sir Peter expresses shame for his actions and reveals he is being supported by his wife Rosemary and a psychiatrist.

On July 25, 1984, he wrote to a Whitehall official: ‘Let me repeat once again how bitterly ashamed I am for what I have done.’ He added: ‘Rosemary wants me to say how greatly she too appreciated all that you have said and all that you have done.’

Retired Anglican Priest Charged with Sexually Assaulting First Nations Boys

A retired Anglican priest and award-winning university lecturer who served a First Nations congregation west of London, Ontario, Canada almost 40 years ago is facing historic sexual assault charges involving three boys.

David Norton, 69, was charged Friday with three counts of indecent assault and one count of sexual assault.

Another well-known and highly respected man of the church and academia facing the possible complete destruction of his legacy and his relationships. Was it worth it?

London police said Norton was released from police headquarters and will make his first court appearance on Jan. 7.

The allegations involve the sexual abuse of three First Nations boys who were seven years old in 1977.

Police said the assaults happened at a London residence and continued until 1983.

Norton was the priest at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church at Chippewa-On-The-Thames in 1977.

Archdeacon Tanya Phibbs of the Diocese of Huron said Norton retired from the full-time clergy in 2011 but still filled in at churches periodically to cover for holidays.

“Our diocesan bishop, once we learned of the charges, suspended Mr. Norton’s general permit, which means he can’t function as a priest,” she said.

That status won’t change for now and Phibbs said they are waiting for the criminal proceedings to unfold.

Norton wasn’t in any formal interim relationship with a church, she said. The diocese learned of the investigation from police a week ago.

“In the meantime, the diocese is certainly keeping prayer for those who are affected, those who assist them and everybody who’s going to be involved in the next while as it moves through the criminal justice system,” Phibbs said.

Norton’s most recent church affiliation was with St. Mark’s in London. He also spent time about 30 years ago in the Yukon.

He has been a part-time history professor at King’s University College at Western University since 2003. This semester he was teaching a course entitled Totalitarianism.

In 2013, Norton won the college’s part-time teaching award. It was noted then that he had taught “a variety of history courses at various levels over many years and made the dean’s honour roll for teaching excellence without fail.”

At that time Norton specialized in First Nations history and “has had a strong connection with the local First Nations reservations for decades.”

King’s spokesperson Jane Antoniak said Norton has been placed on a leave of absence with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.

“We’ve been made aware of this situation by the London police and the fact that an investigation is being conducted which is in no way related to King’s University College,” she said.

A dentist has been arrested for sharing child sex abuse images and selling methamphetamines.

John Wallace Wolf also allegedly told a police informant he was “actively involved” in underground bestiality parties, in shocking claims.

“The defendant’s admitted conduct is nothing short of terrifying,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Moira Penza stated in papers filed in Brooklyn Federal Court.

A meth dealer informant claims to have sold large quantities of drugs to Wolf in exchange for working on his teeth, according to court papers.

Wolf, 59, appeared in a New York court on Friday with his head bowed as he indicated he had read the FBI's evidence against him, reports the New York Daily News.

FBI special agent Aaron Spivack stated the unnamed man witnessed the dentist and his employees using drugs at Wolf’s office.

Spivack stated: "[The informant] advised that Wolf had shown him images on Wolf’s cellular phone of infants and toddlers being sexually abused by adults.”

Wolf allegedly claimed he is HIV-positive and “punctured holes in condoms in an intentional attempt to spread the HIV virus,” according to the complaint.

The FBI say they have conversations recorded between the informant and Wolf where the dentist discusses attending parties in Manhattan and Brooklyn where people had sexual intercourse with animals.

A recording also allegedly contains Wolf claiming to have drugged an adult male with 'Special K', a medication used in anesthesia, because he refused sex without a condom.

An undercover FBI agent feigning an interest in child sex abuse images was introduced to Wolf as the informant’s roommate and met the dentist at his office, authorities said.

According to their report, Wolf allegedly plugged a flash drive into the computer and connected a cord to a large-screen TV showing child sex abuse videos.

The complaint alleges: "Wolf stated that he gets particularly ‘excited’ by specific child pornography videos and described a video depicting an 8-year-old ‘retarded’ girl engaged in sex."

The 23 files were then allegedly moved to a flash drive given to the agent.

Wolf also allegedly told the agent about sex parties in the building's basement, suggesting they could sexually abuse children together.

Drugs and child sex abuse images were recovered from Wolf’s office and his apartment in Greenwich Village, federal agents report.

After being read his rights, Wolf admitted possessing illicit porn, but refused to discuss meth use or whether he had drugged anyone during sex, according to court papers.

Prosecutors argued on Friday that Wolf, despite his strong community ties, should be held without bail “given the bizarre duality” of his professional and private life.

A bail hearing will be held tomorrow.

Defense lawyer Marc Agnifilo complained about the inclusion of the HIV and bestiality allegations in the complaint.

“It seems to be an idle, somewhat scandalous, somewhat superfluous uncorroborated fact,” Agnifilo said outside court, adding that his client is “devastated.” Gee, I wonder how the people he infected with HIV feel; or the children he may have molested, or the children who were raped for his entertainment? Of course, people like that are so narcissistic it's all about them, not their victims.

Wolf could face up to 20 years in prison if he is convicted.

The FBI asked that anyone who is a victim or suspects a family member may be a victim of the demented dentist, to call the feds at (212) 384-5000.

Sex abuse: Police are investigating complaints against hundreds of VIPs

More than 300 ‘VIPs’ are being probed by police over historical sex abuse allegations, the officer in charge of the investigations revealed.

Chief Constable Simon Bailey, of Norfolk police, revealed that 302 people in the public eye - including TV and radio personalities, athletes and politicians - were on the radar of his Operation Hydrant team following complaints.

Hydrant was set up to coordinate probes into child sex abuse at state institutions - such as hospitals, children’s homes and schools - or carried out by those with “public prominence”.

It was launched last year in the wake of the Jimmy Savile scandal and other high profile abuse cases.

Mr Bailey, the police national lead on child abuse, said 2,156 people had been identified as suspects, including the 302 VIPs. The last update in May saw 261 well-known names under suspicion.

He believes historic child abuse allegations are, after fighting terrorism, the “biggest policing challenge of the 21st century”.

Mr Bailey revealed the prominent figures were made up of 147 are television and radio personalities, 17 sports stars, 39 from the music industry and 99 elected officials.

“But the data increases on a weekly basis,” he said. “We have alleged abuse in 753 institutions to date and 286 deceased offenders.”

The Hydrant commander said he is in the process of drawing up new guidelines for investigating officers on how to handle witnesses and alleged offenders.

The move comes after the public naming of alleged abusers - and the damage to their reputation that comes with it - but where cases have proved impossible to build.

But Mr Bailey said all witnesses had a right to go to police with the confidence they would be believed and then work to have their stories corroborated.

He told The Sunday Times: “If you are a victim of crime and you have the confidence and courage to report that crime, it doesn’t have to be sex abuse, it could be that you’ve been burgled, you would expect to be believed.

“That doesn’t mean there is then complete blind faith and we don’t look at the evidence and seek corroboration.

“This is not somebody coming in and someone saying, ‘Right, you’ve told us that, so that has categorically happened.’”

In the desert dust of Sinjar, in north west Iraq, a walking stick lies on the ground.

Strewn casually alongside it are a couple of pairs of scissors, some household keys and a shoe. Bank notes flutter in the dirt.

But, if you look a little closer, the scene becomes a horror show. Clumps of hair and fragments of bone poke grotesquely out of the ditch. It is estimated that almost 80 women are buried in this mass grave, aged between 40 and 80-years-old. The bodies are of Yazidi women, murdered by Islamic State butchers.

As the world prayed for Paris, more than three thousand miles east another atrocity was being uncovered.

Last week Kurdish forces – backed by British and American air strikes – liberated Sinjar from Islamic State militants, along with 28 other villages.

They discovered two graves. The first – containing the corpses of older women – was found west of the city’s centre, near the Sinjar Technical Institute. The second was ten miles west, and is believed to contain men, women and children. It is rigged with explosives and deliberately difficult to access.

The Kurdish government team will analyse the bodies in an attempt to uncover the grim story of what happened here.

But let’s be frank: it is not difficult to guess.

Over the past year, Islamic State forces have kidnapped thousands of young Yazidi women to use as sex slaves. Now we know what happened to those not deemed ‘attractive enough’ for them.

French President Francois Hollande has called the sickening atrocities carried out in Paris “an act of war” committed by Isil.

But for the Yazidis, persecuted in Iraq, this is not just a war. It has all the marks of genocide.

Reading about what happened to the Yazidis is difficult. At a time when the west is still mourning the victims of the co-ordinated terror attacks in Paris, more horrific news can seem too much to bear.

But the massacre of the Yazidis cannot be ignored if the true nature of the enemy in Hollande’s ‘war’ is to be understood.

The Yazidis are a religious sect whose faith incorporates parts of several ancient Middle Eastern religions. To Isil, they are 'devil worshippers' – the lowest of the low – who should be either killed or enslaved.

In August 2014 the militants overran Yazidi territory in Sinjar and began killing and kidnapping thousands of men, women and children. The United Nations has already acknowledged that what happened in those dark days may be considered genocide.

In the village of Kocho, Isil militants gave the inhabitants a deadline by which to convert to Islam. If they refused, they would die.

Hundreds of men and boys were slaughtered; many killed by point-blank shots to the head or were pushed off cliffs. More than a thousand women and girls were kidnapped. The brutal sexual violence against these women and girls – passed around by Isil fighters – has been well documented.

Last year, one 17-year-old girl, part of a group of about 40 Yazidi women who were still being held captive and sexually abused on a daily basis by Isil fighters, told how they were raped on the top floor of the building, up to three times a day, by different groups of men.

"Our torturers do not even spare the women who have small children with them. "Nor do they spare the girls - some of our group are not even 13 years old. Some of them will no longer say a word."

Now, another chilling part of the picture has been filled in: what happened to the older women.

After a two day offensive to recapture Sinjar, last Friday, Kurdish forces were met by young Yazidi women who had somehow managed to escape the clutches of the Isil kidnappers. They led their liberators to ditches containing the bodies of their mothers and grandmothers.

According to the survivors, these older women were taken behind the technical institute in the Solagh area, east of Sinjar. After a pause, gunfire was heard.

The belongings scattered by the dusty mass grave in Sinjar show this is no ordinary war. Elderly women who use walking sticks are not soldiers.

Islamic State’s attitude to women has been brutally laid bare in its division of the Yazidis into those who were young and beautiful enough to rape, and those who were not. Mothers and grandmothers who seemingly could not command a price in the sex market (reportedly a 'packet of cigarettes') were simply slaughtered.

It's hard to imagine women being reduced to pieces of meat in a more savage manner.

Iowa man sentenced to prison for child sex abuse

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) - A 48-year-old Council Bluffs man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for sexually abusing a teenage girl.

The Council Bluffs Daily Nonpareil reports (http://bit.ly/1N37YC2 ) that Steven Cain pleaded guilty to two counts of third-degree sexual abuse. In exchange, prosecutors dropped other sexual abuse charges against him.

Police say the abuse started in 2006 and continued until last year. Cain's victim is now 18.

So she was 9 years old when it started. 20 years is not enough!

During a search of Cain's home, investigators found naked pictures of the victim among Cain's collection of pornography.

Once Cain is released from prison, he will have to register as sex offender and remain on parole for the rest of his life.

Iowa ex-teacher to plead guilty in child sex abuse case

FOREST CITY, Iowa (AP) - Court records show a former North Iowa Community School District kindergarten teacher accused of inappropriately touching a child will plead guilty in the case.

The Mason City Globe Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/1N35QKo ) that 62-year-old Allen Twait, of Forest City, will enter the plea at a hearing set for Tuesday. Online court records to not indicate to what charge Twait will plead guilty.

He had been set to be tried on Dec. 9 in Winnebago County District Court on a charge of lascivious acts with a child.

Prosecutors say a criminal complaint alleges Twait fondled a child under 14 last February, but that the incident was not alleged to have occurred at the school where Twait worked.

Twait was placed on administrative leave after he was charged.

Man arrested in California for child sex abuse

Salinas police officers have arrested a man accused of sexually abusing children.

According to police, one victim was 11-years-old when the abuse began.

There are also two other victims who are minors. One victim is 17-years-old and the other is 11-years-old. Detectives are now looking into the possibility of a fourth victim.

39-year-old Guadalupe Martin was taken into custody Friday night.

Martin is in the Monterey County Jail and is facing multiple counts of child molestation.


His bail has been set at $2 million.

Church pastor accused of sexually abusing girl between 13 and 17 years old

A pastor at an evangelical church in Deerfield was charged with the sexual abuse of a minor after he approached police and confessed to the inappropriate relationship, authorities said.

The pastor, Samuel Kee, "just walked into the police station and said he had to confess to a crime," Deerfield Deputy police Chief Tom Keane said. "We had to kind of work backward and locate the victim and talk to the victim and build the case."

Kee, 39, who has since resigned from the North Suburban Evangelical Free Church, appeared Wednesday in Lake County court, where he pleaded not guilty to aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

Authorities said the allegations involve a 16-year-old girl who was a member of the church. Kee was charged Oct. 15, a day after police said he first contacted them.

Ten days later, the church's Elder Board accepted Kee's resignation from his role as pastor of teaching and discipleship, according to a statement released by the church.

The statement said the church could not provide further comment on the charges, adding: "Church officials are fully cooperating with the Deerfield police on their investigation."

Kee is free from custody after posting 10 percent of a $300,000 bond.

According to a court document filed by Kee's defense, he has asked to be allowed to clear out his desk at the church because the senior pastor requested Kee do so. One of Kee's bond requirements is that he have no contact with the church.


A woman who answered the door Wednesday at Kee's Lake Zurich home said he was not there and declined to comment.

Two Rochester, NY Men Charged with 66 Counts of Child Sex Abuse

Rochester, New York - A Monroe County grand jury has voted to indict two men on child rape charges. Keith Wilcox, 59, and Andrew Lomax, 50, were charged with a combined 66 counts involving sexually abusing several children under the age of 16. Wilcox is accused of sexually abusing eight victims, all under the age of 17. 

Wilcox was charged with two counts of Predatory Sexual Assault Against a Child, 12 counts of second-degree Criminal Sexual Act, two counts of first-degree Criminal Sexual Act, 20 counts of third-degree Criminal Sexual Act, seven counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, first-degree sexual abuse, first-degree attempted sexual abuse, and contact with a victim under the age of 13.  Yikes!

Lomax was charged with ten counts of second-degree criminal sexual act, four counts of endangering the welfare of a child and seven counts of third-degree criminal sexual act. The crimes allegedly happened at the suspects' home on Tacoma Street between 2010 and 2015.

"We are asking anyone in the community with additional information related to this case or anyone who feels they are a victim to immediately contact the Major Crimes IMPACT Unit at the Rochester Police Department: (585) 428-7368," Assistant District Attorney Kyle Rossi said.

Cyprus Police Investigating Rising Number of Child Sex Abuse Cases

Police on the Mediterranean island of  Cyprus are investigating another case of child sexual abuse, spokesman Andreas Angelides told CyBC TV on Friday.

The case was reported via the school that the child attends and Social Welfare.

To protect the victim, Angelides avoided giving the ages and town of the people involved. Police have arrested one person, while a second person who is a minor was placed under the care of Social Welfare. Both are relatives of the victim.

Sounds a lot like incest to me.

The girl was examined by a gynaecologist, a pediatric surgeon and a coroner who confirmed signs of rape.

Limassol, Cyprus police have arrested four-people who are accused of sexually assaulting two girls related to them from 1992 until 2002.

A Paphos couple, 62 and 64, along with their two-grown up sons, aged 36 and 37 have been detained by police on suspicion of assaulting the couple’s nieces.

One of the victim’s now aged 29-years-old has claimed that from the young age of seven she was repeatedly raped by her cousins and uncle in the presence of her auntie. She further alleges that she was forced to watch pornography and sexually assaulted.

Out of the four suspects, the three-men are being held on suspicion of rape.

It is believed that the victims did not come forward to report the crimes before, for fear of being ostracised by the family and ruining the families tight bond.

Limassol police are taking the allegations very seriously and continue to investigate the case.

 ‘European Day on the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse’

The number of sex crimes against children in Cyprus has gone up as Europe marks ‘European Day on the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse’.

The rise in the number of sex crimes being perpetrated against children and minors has meanwhile prompted a response from Child Protection Commissioner Leda Koursoumba who has called on the state to do more to protect young victims.

According to the latest government figures, a total of 32 cases of child abuse were reported in 2011, 41 cases were reported in 2012 and 36 cases were reported in 2013. Last year, police investigated 48 cases concerning child sex abuse while a total of 28 cases have been reported since the beginning of 2015 until today.

The same figures showed that while 2011 and 2012 a total of 38 and 54 cases of child pornography were reported, that figure dropped to 23 in 2013 but increased sharply in 2014.

The Cyber Crime Unit of the Police investigated a total of 106 cases while that figure is expected to rise again this year with a total of 100 cases already under investigated since the beginning of 2015 until today.

Figures from the Mental Health Services have showed a total of 42 victims of sexual abuse/harassment (under the age of 17) were examined in 2013 while that figure climbed to 54 the following year.

“Who will give back that lost innocence of the child and who will apologise for the criminal negligence by the state and society for not doing enough to protect those victims?” commented Koursoumba who spoke of the need for the government to look into those figure and take action.

“That is why it is wise for all of us to look into proposals that better safeguard children.”

The objectives of the European Day are to:

raise public awareness of sexual exploitation and sexual abuse of children, and the need to prevent such acts;

facilitate open discussion on the protection of children against sexual exploitation and sexual abuse and help prevent and eliminate the stigmatisation of victims;

promote the ratification and implementation of the Lanzarote Convention- a unique legally-binding instrument that obliges Parties to criminalise all forms of sexual abuse of children and spells out the ways to fight it.

Labour Minister Zeta Emilianidou meanwhile has pointed out that within efforts to protect children and combat sexual exploitation and sexual abuse, Cyprus signed the Lanzarote Convention in 2007, which was ratified on February 12, 2015, and participates in the Council of Europe campaign “One the Five. ”

Furthermore, in July 2015 Cyprus passed the Prevention and Suppression of Sexual Abuse and Sexual Exploitation of Children and Child Pornography Act, which includes provisions of the Council of Europe Convention for the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse, as well as provisions of EU Directive 2011/93.
