Convicted child abuser faces up to 25 years in prison after plea agreement in Texas child sex case

SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio man who had been pushing for overnight visitations with his son despite having a violent criminal history out of state faces up to 25 years in prison after pleading no contest to aggravated sex assault of a child Friday.

Santos Vigil, 37, is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 9, according to a copy of his plea agreement obtained by the KSAT 12 Defenders.

He has applied for deferred adjudication but prosecutors have already opposed that request, according to the agreement, which states his sentence cannot be longer than 25 years.

Vigil was the focus of a Defenders investigation last month after he asked a Bexar County civil court judge for overnight visitations with his son, 5, as long as a member of Vigil’s family was present.

Vigil’s wife opposed the request, citing the then-pending continuous sex abuse of a child case against Vigil along with a lengthy criminal history in Michigan that included a conviction of child abuse.

Vigil lashed out at the Defenders as he left the hearing and refused to answer questions about the allegations against him in Bexar County as well as his Michigan criminal record.

“You’re making a clown of yourself. This is a (expletive) divorce proceeding," Vigil said. "What the (expletive)?”

An arrest warrant signed in April 2018 accused Vigil of repeatedly sexually assaulting his stepdaughter beginning when she was nine years old and continuing until she was 13.

The sexual assaults stopped, according to the warrant, only after the teen was taken to a hospital.

A public records search shows that Vigil had at least ten encounters with police in Ludington, a small harbor town on the west side of Michigan, between 2005 and 2007.

Vigil was arrested multiple times and listed as a criminal suspect in a majority of the cases.

Among the incidents:

January 2006: Vigil investigated for child abuse after a three-year-old boy in his care was found with possible bite marks and circular bruises. Vigil was never charged.
January 2006: Six days later, Vigil was arrested for felonious home invasion after he and another man broke into a home and assaulted several people inside. One victim told police Vigil held a small knife to his throat, threatened to kill him and then cut his forehead after scraping the tip of the blade from the man's throat to his forehead. Records show Vigil was later convicted of home invasion.
January 2006: A day after the home invasion, Vigil was arrested for disorderly conduct after officers said he became belligerent, ignored their commands and obstructed them from arresting another person at a bar.
July 2006: Vigil arrested for child abuse after the boy from the January 2006 investigation was found with bruises on both sides of his face and his back. A second victim, a woman Vigil was dating, was found with a black eye. Vigil told police he switched from hitting the boy with his fists to using a belt after being released from prison. Records show Vigil later pleaded guilty and was ordered not to be around the woman or child.
April 2007: For the second time in four months, Vigil is investigated for possibly violating a protective order by being around the woman and child. The boy told officers Vigil was still hitting him. There is no record that Vigil was arrested for this incident.

A spokesperson for the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday.

Her husband, Matthew Gridley, 45, has a trial scheduled on Feb. 13. for 20 counts of possession of child pornography, sexual battery of a child and lewd or lascivious molestation.

Stacey Gridley was a teacher at Varsity Lakes Middle School and a Cub Scout Den leader. She was arrested by Florida Department of Law Enforcement on May 31.

A Lee County School District statement confirmed that she had been an employee with the district since 2012. Once the district was notified of her husband's arrest, she was immediately removed from the classroom and an investigation opened.

Court documents indicate that Stacey Gridley knew for several years about her husband's actions involving the child abuse and only stopped when she confronted him.

She admitted to investigators that she should have reported the incidents and that she should have believed the child, court documents state.

The abuse was revealed when the child was questioned at the Children's Advocacy Center of Southwest Florida after Matthew Gridley's arrest on May 15, FDLE reports state.

The arrests of Stacey and Matthew Gridley were part of a months-long investigation of alleged sexual offenders by the FDLE called Operation Safe Summer.

20 years in prison, 40 years on parole for
Port Leyden, NY, child sex criminal
By JULIE ABBASS NNY360

LOWVILLE, NY — A slight nod and the briefest eye contact was the answer given by the 15-year-old victim of a Port Leyden sex criminal when asked if the sentence handed down moments before in the nearby court room offered him some sense of vindication, of closure, even though it could do nothing to change what had happened. At the same time, his mother was quickly shaking her head no, strong emotion etched on her face.

Michael S. Daskiewich, 58, was sentenced by Judge Daniel R. King in Lewis County Court to a total of 40 years in state prison on the eight charges for which a jury of his peers found him guilty on Sept. 11, after deliberating for about 75 minutes.

In October 2018, Daskiewich brought two 15-year-old boys to his house, plied them with alcohol and had sexual contact with one of them while the other was sleeping in another room.

Addressing the judge before the sentence was handed down, prosecutor Caleb J. Petzoldt said that Daskiewich gave the victim a “lifetime sentence” of battling thoughts of blame, shock, fear, post traumatic stress disorder and depression as well as impacting the boy’s family and relationships, present and future.

“Mr. Daskiewich had accepted no responsibility for his actions,” Mr. Petzoldt said, referencing evidence presented at the trial, and that Daskiewich had “not only been in inappropriate sexual contact [with the victim] but in fact he was excited about having more.”

Mr. Petzoldt told Judge King he believed the sentence needed to be enough “to make sure this defendant definitely doesn’t hand another life sentence to someone else,” before asking for it to be 25 years.

In his address to the judge, Daskiewich’s attorney Kevin J. Dwyer said his client had “taken a step” toward responsibility after having maintained his innocence throughout the proceeding by “acknowledging he put himself in a bad situation by having two 15-year-old boys in his house” and giving them alcohol.

Mr. Dwyer asked Judge King to consider Mr. Daskiewich’s compliance with the court, consistently showing up when expected, being respectful and providing any information requested of him. He also said he hoped Daskiewich’s “decision to go to trial and exercise his constitutional rights” rather than accepting a plea deal wouldn’t count against him.

The pre-trial plea deal offer would have given Daskiewich 15 years in state prison, which Mr. Dwyer asked Judge King to consider as still an appropriate sentence.

After reading the pre-sentencing report issued by the probation department three times, Judge King said he didn’t see any acceptance of responsibility, that Daskiewich was blaming the victim and being “flippant and dismissive.”

Judge King said he was sentencing for the crimes, not for going to trial, before handing down 20 years in state prison followed by 20 years of parole for each of the two counts of the felony first-degree criminal sexual act, to be served back-to-back, totalling 40 years.

Daskiewich was also sentenced to four years in prison each for two counts of third-degree criminal sex act and five years for one count of first-degree sexual abuse, all felonies, as well as one year in county jail each for endangering the welfare of a child and two counts of unlawfully dealing with a child, all to be served at the same time as the 20-year sentences.

He is also required to pay $1,375 in court fees and surcharges and register as a level two or three sex offender, to be determined after he leaves prison.

“I’m happy with the sentence,” Mr. Petzoldt said outside of the courtroom with the victim and his mom, “The most important thing is that there are no other victims.”

According to Mr. Dwyer, Daskiewich intends to have an appeal filed on his behalf within the next few days.

As co-owner of the Hulbert House with other family members, Daskiewich sold the historic restaurant and lodging in Boonville in February, after a failed auction at the end of 2018.

Daskiewich could have been sentenced to a maximum of 50 years in state prison for his crimes.

Oregon man on probation for sex crimes against child pleads guilty to child pornography
by Christina Giardinelli

MEDFORD, Ore. — Dorian Jeffries, 34 of Medford, pleaded guilty on Thursday, to five counts of Encouraging Child Sexual Abuse in the First Degree and was sentenced to 55 months in prison and 3 years probation.

The charges were relating to a case opened by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) after Jeffries uploaded images of child pornography on the internet.

The case was referred to Internet Crimes Against Children and the Department of Homeland Security before it reached local law enforcement.

According to the Jackson County Circuit Court, a search warrant executed at Jefferies home yielded "images of child exploitation."

The courts noted that Jeffries initially told officers "that he saved and uploaded the images in order to forward them to law enforcement," however no report was made.

Jeffries was lodged in March, will receive credit for time served and will be forced to register as a sex offender.

According to Oregon's online court system, Jeffries has several previous charges relating to sex crimes against minors.

He was logged in June of 2015 on charges of Unlawful Sexual Predation and Sexual Abuse in the First Degree for sexual activity with a child under 12. The incidents dated back to Feb 2014 and June 2015.

In May of 2016 he pled no contest to the charges and was granted credit for time served and sentenced to five years of supervised probation which would have ended in May 2021.

Jeffries was required to register as a sex offender for those crimes.

In June of 2015, Jeffries was also arraigned on charges relating to separate instances involving another child under 12 in Jan 2004 and Dec 2007.

He was charged with 4 counts of Sodomy in the First Degree and 2 counts of Sexual Abuse in the First Degree for sexual intercourse with a child under 12.

The case went to trial in Jan of 2016 and he was ultimately found not guilty and acquitted of all charges by a jury of 12 although one juror voted in opposition.

Oregon is the last state in the U.S. that allows juries in criminal cases to reach verdicts without all 12 jurors agreeing.

3 charged in alleged incidents of physical and sexual abuse involving foster children in Oxford, Mass
..
The charges stem from incidents that allegedly occurred in the early 2000s

By Arianna MacNeill Boston.com Staff

Three people are facing charges after former foster children alleged that they were subjected to physical and sexual abuse, such as being kept in dog cages and being forced to eat dog feces, in a foster home in Oxford in the early 2000s.

State records reviewed by WCVB indicate that there was “physical, mental, and sexual abuse of multiple former foster children in that home for years.”

Susan Blouin, 61, was arraigned for indecent assault and battery on a child under 14 on Monday in Dudley District Court, MassLive reported. She was released with conditions. Blouin, a registered nurse, was also reportedly fired from her job at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Boston.

Blouin allegedly tugged a foster child, who was between 7 and 10 years old, around a room by his testicles and beat him after he allegedly brought shotgun ammunition shells to school, according to the Worcester Telegram and Gazette.

Raymond Blouin, 65, Susan’s husband, is also being charged with indecent assault and battery, according to WCVB. He was already convicted of molesting a foster child and is a registered sex offender. He pleaded guilty to the past charge, according to the Telegram and Gazette, and served three years of probation.

Raymond Blouin is facing the new charge after a former foster child came forward in July, alleging that he and his brother would be locked in a dog cage with their hands, eyes, and ankles duct taped. The same former foster child also reportedly had issues with bed wetting and said Raymond Blouin would touch him inappropriately when checking to see if he wet the bed, the Telegram and Gazette reported.

Philip Paquette, 59, Susan Blouin’s ex-boyfriend, was arraigned on child rape-related charges on Thursday for incidents that reportedly occurred almost 20 years ago, WCVB said.

One of the former foster children, who is now incarcerated at Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center, a maximum security prison in Lancaster, told authorities that he was often given dog food for breakfast and was ordered to remain naked, according to the Telegram and Gazette. He also alleges that Paquette made him perform oral sex on him twice, and threatened to kill him if he told anyone.

Back in 2004, Paquette faced 12 charges related to child abuse at the Oxford home – he allegedly struck foster children with a belt, the newspaper reported. But those charges were reportedly dropped since social workers didn’t want to put the victims, children at the time, on the witness stand.

Good grief!

Twin Tiers performing arts teacher sentenced to prison
for child sex abuse in Pa.
Anthony Borrelli, Elmira Star-Gazette

A performing arts teacher from Waverly will spend at least six months in prison for sexual assaults against students at two Northern Tier school districts.

Justin P. Shaw, 38, was sentenced Friday in Bradford County Court and will spend 25 years as a registered sex offender. He founded and directed the Justin P. Shaw Academy of Performing Arts in Athens, and was arrested by Pennsylvania State Police in June after allegations surfaced of sexual assault involving a minor.

At the time of the incidents, Shaw was also employed as drama director in the Athens and Sayre school districts, according to investigators.

The case began when Athens High School Principal Corey Mosier contacted Pennsylvania state troopers and informed them a then-17-year-old student told him the school's drama director had touched him inappropriately and tried to establish a relationship with him, court documents said.

The chain of events started around November 2017, the victim told police. He also stated Shaw had the victim list him as his godfather, so he could sign the boy out of school.

Sayre schools Superintendent Sherri Griggs confirmed Shaw did sign the victim out of school on more than one occasion, the complaint stated.

A school kid can list who gets to take him out of school? How crazy is that?

Other alleged victims included a 16-year-old female, a minor female of unknown age, and a 15-year-old male, according to the complaint.

In September, Shaw pleaded guilty to felony counts of institutional sexual assault and sexual assault by volunteer.

The sentence handed down Friday imprisons Shaw for up to 23 months, followed by five years on probation. The Bradford County District Attorney's Office said Shaw would be re-sentenced to prison, if he were to violate terms of the probation once he's released from prison.

Salisbury, NC, man sentenced to 28 years in prison for production of child pornography
By David Whisenant

SALISBURY, N.C. (WBTV) - A man who pleaded guilty to production of child pornography was sentenced to 28 years in prison today, announced Matthew G.T. Martin, United States Attorney for the Middle District of North Carolina.

Joshua Douglas Martorelli, 36, of Salisbury, pleaded guilty on August 7, 2019, to one count of production of child pornography and one count of attempted production of child pornography. He was sentenced by Chief United States Chief District Judge Thomas D. Schroeder to 28 years of imprisonment followed by 25 years of supervised release.

According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Martorelli targeted children for sexual exploitation by forming romantic relationships with their mothers. He then cajoled the mothers to exploit their own children for his sexual gratification.

In fall 2016, Martorelli directed the mother of a young boy to sexually assault the child and send him a picture of the abuse. The mother complied. Messages recovered by investigators revealed that Martorelli made many similar requests during the same time period.

This case was investigated by a team of agencies comprised of the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). All are members of the North Carolina Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force.
