BETHEL, Alaska (KTUU/Gray News) - A repeat offender has been sentenced to one of Alaska’s longest prison terms for sexual assault.
Bethel Superior Court Judge William Montgomery sentenced 58-year-old Leonard Olrun to 156 years after a jury found him guilty in March of two counts of first-degree sexual abuse of a minor and misconduct involving a controlled substance.
Jurors determined Olrun repeatedly sexually abused children between December 2019 and early 2021 and gave marijuana to one of his victims.
Prosecutors said his prior convictions — dating back to 1987 and 2001 — and his history of violent behavior factored heavily into the court’s decision.
Officials said the court found multiple aggravating circumstances, including Olrun being more than 10 years older than his victims and his prior convictions for similar crimes.
Montgomery described Olrun as being a “worst offender” and said the composite sentence was necessary to protect the public.
Assistant Attorney General Bailey Woolfstead told the court the state sought a sentence of 175 years, arguing Olrun’s criminal record poses the question: “How many times should a person be allowed to sexually abuse children before we say enough?”
Through counsel, Olrun requested a minimum sentence of 52 years.
However, Montgomery said the community needed to see the case as an example that the justice system could respond.
“One person with enough courage came forward, the process worked,” he said. “The community in Mekoryuk does not have to deal with Mr. Olrun inflicting more pain on that community.”

Dallas horror: Why Chandra Nagamallaiah killer, accused of 'child sex abuse, carjacking', roamed free
Chandra Mouli Nagamallaiah, who was allegedly beheaded by Cuban-origin Yordanis Cobos-Martinez, is survived by his wife Nisha and son Gaurav (18), for whom a fundraiser has raised nearly $200,000

Prior to the murder of Indian-origin Chandra Mouli "Bob" Nagamallaiah (50) over a laundry dispute in Dallas on Wednesday, the accused, Yordanis Cobos-Martinez, had once faced a deportation order to his native country, Cuba.
Jail records show the 37-year-old—found wearing a blood-soaked t-shirt soon after the grisly killing—is being held without bond in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody at the Dallas County Jail, an NBC News report said. The records identify him as an undocumented immigrant.
"He was most recently in ICE Dallas custody at the Bluebonnet Detention Centre until he was released on an Order of Supervision on January 13, 2025—under the Biden administration," a press release from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said, about his previous conviction.
It added that a previous attempt to deport him failed because Cuba refused to accept "this barbaric criminal", citing his criminal history.
Currently facing homicide charges, Cobos-Martinez's criminal history includes child sex abuse, grand theft of a motor vehicle, false imprisonment, and carjacking.
Condemning his release into the streets after the failed deportation attempt to Cuba, Tricia McLaughlin, a Public Affairs official at the DHS, stated that ICE would now be "removing criminal illegal aliens to third countries".
"President Trump and Secretary Noem are no longer allowing barbaric criminals to indefinitely remain in America. If you come to our country illegally, you could end up in Eswatini, Uganda, South Sudan, or CECOT," she warned.
