Best-selling author Brendan DuBois indicted on child sex abuse images charges

New York Times best-selling author Brendan DuBois has been indicted by a New Hampshire grand jury on six felony counts of possession of child sex abuse images.

DuBois, 65, of Exeter, New Hampshire, will be arraigned Oct. 23, in Rockingham Superior Court. An indictment is not an indication of guilt; it means the grand jury found enough evidence to warrant a trial. The grand jury met in October.

DuBois has been held in preventative detention since he was arrested by Exeter police in July. A judge ordered detention based on clear and convincing evidence that the “defendant's release will endanger the safety of the defendant or the public, given the substantial number of alleged sexual abuse images and the recency of the downloaded images.”

DuBois was arrested by Exeter police on July 10 after he turned himself in on a warrant.

According to a criminal complaint, DuBois "did knowingly possess at least 35 visual representations of children engaging in sexually explicit conduct." The document states they were "images of nude boys and girls under the age of 18 engaging in various sexual acts."

DuBois is represented by attorney Harry Starbranch of Starbranch Law in Portsmouth, who did not return a call seeking comment Thursday.

Police say thousands of images of 'possible child abuse content' were discovered

According to a police affidavit, police received a cyber tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children regarding "apparent child pornography" in March. The tip was reported by Google and all the files were uploaded to a Google Drive account by the same IP address police later determined belonged to DuBois.

On May 7, police issued a search warrant on DuBois' home on Juniper Ridge Road in Exeter. According to a police affidavit, multiple items were seized from the property, including a Toshiba hard drive and an Apple laptop, both located in DuBois' office.

More than 5,600 images on the computer were flagged as being "possible child abuse content," according to the affidavit.

Twenty images were detailed in the affidavit. Some of the images, according to the affidavit, were not flagged as possible child abuse content and were a part of the 401,208 images on the hard drive.

"I estimate the age of the above-mentioned children to be between infancy to 12 years old," said Exeter police Detective Bailey Teixeira.

Teixeira stated she reviewed DuBois' search history, and on Jan. 27 that included news articles of people arrested for possession of sex abuse images. It also included searches like "I accidentally saved child pornography to my main Google Drive" and "How to tell if Google has reported me to the police."

If convicted, DuBois faces up to 15 years in prison and a fine of $4,000 on each count.

DuBois has authored more than two dozen novels, including “The First Lady” and “Cornwalls Are Gone.” He has also partnered with his mentor and “the most published author in the world,” James Patterson, on several books, including “The Summer House,” “Blowback” and the recently released “Cross Down.”

Mariano Rivera, wife break silence after being accused of covering up child sex abuse

New York Yankees legend Mariano Rivera and his wife Clara broke their silence on Thursday after they were named in a lawsuit and accused of covering up child sex abuse of a minor in their home and a summer camp connected with their church.

Joseph A. Ruta, their attorney, said in a statement that the first time they heard about the allegations was in 2022 – four years after the alleged incident took place. The attorney for the alleged victim at the time requested a financial settlement.

"Mariano and Clara Rivera do not tolerate child abuse of any kind and allegations that they knew about or failed to act on reports of child abuse are completely false," the statement read, via the New York Post. "The very first time they heard about these allegations was nearly four years after the alleged incident, when in 2022 a New York attorney sent a letter requesting a financial settlement. This was followed by a second letter in 2023, from a different Florida law firm, again requesting a financial settlement.

"The lawsuit, which seeks financial damages for the Riveras’ alleged failure to act on alleged incidents that were never reported to them, is full of inaccurate and misleading statements which we have no doubt will not hold up in a court of law."

In the lawsuit, a woman identified as "Jane Doe" said she was sexually abused by an older girl known as "MG" during a summer internship in 2018. MG was a minor at the time of the alleged incidents. The internship took place at the Ignite Life Center in Gainesville, Florida, which was affiliated with Rivera's church.

The suit said that the alleged victim's mother informed Clara of the abuse and that Clara promised to investigate the matter. However, they allegedly covered it up.

"Rather than take sufficient action to end the sexual abuse of Jane Doe, the Riveras each separately isolated and intimidated Jane Doe to remain silent about her abuse by MG to avoid causing trouble for Refuge of Hope and the Ignite Life Summer Internship," the suit read.

The suit also alleged that MG abused the victim at the Rivera residence in Rye, New York, that summer during a barbecue.

"At all times relevant, [the Riveras] knew or should have known that MG was a risk to sexually abuse children… before and during the time of the barbecue," the suit read.

"In order to avoid the potential scandal of child sexual abuse in its programs and otherwise protect [themselves] above all else, the Riveras… assured [Doe's mother] that [Doe] was safe and in no danger at Ignite Life Center, despite actual or constructive knowledge that Doe remained vulnerable to additional acts of sexual abuse by MG."

Several months later, in January 2019, Rivera became the first and still only player to be unanimously elected into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Later that year, President Donald Trump, during his first presidency, awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The daughter of celebrated Canadian writer Alice Munro has come forward with a dark secret about her family that is rocking the literary world and re-contextualizing the author’s legacy weeks after her death.

Andrea Robin Skinner, the youngest of Munro’s children, penned a first-person essay in the Toronto Star on Sunday that sheds light on the sexual abuse she suffered at the hands of her stepfather, Gerald Fremlin, Munro’s second husband. Skinner, who was nine years old when the abuse began, writes that her mother knew about it for decades and stayed silent.

Fremlin’s abuse was swept under the rug, Skinner writes. Even when he was eventually charged with indecent assault against her and pleaded guilty in a 2005 trial, her mother remained loyal to her abuser. Munro stayed married to Fremlin until his death in 2013.

Munro died on May 13 at the age of 92. Headlines of her death dominated Canadian news, with outlets hailing her mastery of the short story and praising her intimate portrayals of the lives of women and girls. Now, conversations are taking place about whether the Nobel laureate’s novels deserve space in the bookshelves of the nation.

Skinner’s story

Skinner is the youngest daughter of Munro and her first husband Jim Munro. The pair divorced in 1972 and each went on to remarry: Munro to Fremlin, and Jim to Carole Sabiston, a textile artist.

Skinner mainly lived with her father and stepmother in British Columbia, but spent summers with her mother in Ontario. In 1976, the year Munro and Fremlin were married, Skinner was sexually assaulted by her mother’s new husband.

Munro was away and Skinner, who was nine years old, had asked if she could sleep in Munro’s bed, next to Fremlin’s in the bedroom the couple shared. Fremlin crawled into the bed and molested her as she tried to fall asleep.

Then, Fremlin “tried to get me to hold his penis. My hand kept going limp though as I was pretending very hard that I was asleep,” Skinner told the Star.

Skinner, afraid of the fallout, didn’t tell her mother what happened. When it was time for her to return to British Columbia, Fremlin drove her to the airport by himself and asked the nine-year-old to expose herself to him — she said no — and tell him details about her “sex life.”

Back at home, Skinner told her stepbrother Andrew what happened and he urged her to go to his mother Carole. Skinner told Carole who then told Skinner’s father Jim. In the end, Jim decided to not tell Munro about Fremlin’s abuse.

“I was relieved at first that my father didn’t tell her what had happened to me… As relieved as I was, my father’s inability to take swift and decisive action to protect me also left me feeling that I no longer truly belonged in either home. I was alone,” Skinner writes in her essay.

Abused children desperately need a hero who will take their side and fight for them. Andrea's dad unfortunately failed miserably. He not only didn't report the creep to Alice or to the police, but he continued to send Andrea back east every summer.

Over the next several years, Skinner would return to Ontario each summer. Fremlin made inappropriate jokes, she wrote, “exposed himself during car rides” and talked about his sex life with Munro when he was alone with his stepdaughter. She tried to ignore him.

The abuse stopped when Skinner reached her teenage years and Fremlin lost interest, the Star reports. 

This is a typical sign of a genuine paedophile, they prefer prepubescent kids.

Munro seemingly remained in the dark until her daughter exposed the truth in a 1992 letter.

Skinner was 25 at the time and struggling with the trauma of her abuse. She had developed an eating disorder and battled insomnia and migraines. She had dropped out of the University of Toronto as a result.

Again, this is typical behaviour of adult survivors of child sexual abuse.

She decided to come clean to her mother about what happened.

“I have been carrying a secret for sixteen years. Gerry abused me sexually when I was 9 years old… I have been afraid all my life that you would blame me for what happened,” she wrote in a letter to her mom.

Skinner’s fears were realized. Instead of being met with sympathy and compassion, Munro painted herself as a victim of infidelity.

“She called my sister Sheila, told her she was leaving Fremlin, and flew to her condo in Comox, B.C. I visited her there and was overwhelmed by her sense of injury to herself. She believed my father had made us keep the secret in order to humiliate her. She then told me about other children Fremlin had ‘friendships’ with, emphasizing her own sense that she, personally, had been betrayed,” Skinner writes.

Rarely do paedophiles restrict themselves to a single victim. If there is one victim, there are most likely others.

When Fremlin learned of the letter, he began a campaign to discredit Skinner. In the end, his writings served to expose his crimes, and later helped in prosecuting him for indecent assault.

Of course, this is what liars do, and paedophiles are liars. They tell you as much truth as they think you can handle without turning on them, but they never tell the whole truth.

In a letter written to Jim and Carole, Fremlin wrote: “It is my contention that Andrea invaded my bedroom for sexual adventure. If she were in fact afraid, she could have left at any time. She was sexually receptive and mildly aggressive. While the scene is degenerate, this is indeed Lolita and Humbert. For Andrea to say she was ‘scared’ is simply a lie or latter day invention.”

He referred to her numerous times as a Lolita, and himself as a Humbert Humbert, referring to characters from Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita. Fremlin seemed to believe that Skinner, at nine years old, was not a “blameless victim” but a seductress.

Despite Fremlin’s letters, Munro went back to him and for years the family skirted around the topic of abuse. No one in the family spoke of it. No one wanted to tarnish Munro’s rising fame and reputation as a writer.

But in 2002, Skinner became pregant with twins and the issue could no longer be ignored. She told her mother that Fremlin would never be allowed near her children and confronted Munro with some of the horrible specifics of the abuse she faced as a child.

Three years later, still feeling betrayed and silenced, Skinner went to the police. On March 11, 2005, an 80-year-old Fremlin pleaded guilty to indecent assault for abusing Skinner in 1976. The letters Fremlin wrote were a key piece of evidence.

Fremlin never served jail time. He was placed on probation for two years, ordered to not have contact with Skinner and prohibited from visiting parks or playgrounds. Still, Munro stayed and not much about the family dynamic changed, the Star reports.

“The family went back to socializing with the pedophile,” Skinner’s sister Jenny Munro told the Star. “My mother went on a book tour.”

Fremlin died in 2013, the same year that Munro received the Nobel Prize for Literature. Jenny accepted the award on her mother’s behalf.

Skinner never reconciled with her mother, who died in May this year.

Now, the siblings are standing together, in agreement that Skinner’s story must be told publicly. The Star reports they are worried about the fallout of this revelation, but hope “this might lead to a more robust understanding of her as a writer.”

Already, the impact is being felt — with many Canadians sharing their shock online. It remains to be seen how Munro’s legacy will be affected longterm.

In her essay, Skinner said she hoped that Fremlin’s 2005 conviction would ensure that she never saw “another interview, biography or event that didn’t wrestle with the reality of what had happened to me, and with the fact that my mother, confronted with the truth of what had happened, chose to stay with, and protect, my abuser.”

While that didn’t happen in the aftermath of the 2005 trial, it could certainly be the case now.

Premier League player has bail extended as probe continues

into alleged child sex abuses

An unnamed Premier League player, who has been suspended by his club pending the results of an investigation into alleged child sex offences, has been granted a bail extension until October by Greater Manchester Police.

The player, whose identity remains a mystery, was arrested last month pending a further investigation and was initially granted bail which has since been extended until October 16.

When the news initially broke in July, Premier League side Everton issued a statement to confirm that they had suspended a first-team player - but refused to be drawn into speculation as to whether the suspension was linked to the reports of child abuse allegations.

"Everton can confirm it has suspended a first-team player pending a police investigation. The club will continue to support the authorities with their inquiries and will not be making any further statement at this time," the club said in July. 

According to reports at the time, the player's home was raided by police, with the Daily Mail quoting a source as saying: "Several items were seized by cops. He was questioned in relation to very serious offences."

Meanwhile, the UK Attorney General has delivered a warning to social media users to protect the identity of the player in question, stating that an online rumor mill could jeopardize the ongoing investigation.

"Everyone is innocent until proven guilty, and everyone deserves a fair trial," said the Rt Hon Michael Ellis QC MP.

On the other hand, many victims won't 'come out' until a pervert has been charged by police.

"A mis-judged tweet or post could have grave repercussions and interfere with a trial. It could mean a trial is delayed or at worst stopped, because a fair trial isn't possible.

"So I would caution everyone, don't get in the way of justice being done.

"The Attorney General's Office will monitor the situation and we will review any contempt of court allegations made to us."

This statement from the Attorney General mirrors a campaign run by the AG's office called #ThinkBeforeYouPost, which is aimed at warning social media users of the dangers of posting inaccurate information online which could potentially interfere with the judicial process.

One of Mexico’s most popular female internet influencers has been charged with possessing child pornography, after she shared a video of a sexual assault with her millions of social media followers.

A Mexico City judge has ruled that Yoseline Hoffman, who goes by the name of ‘YosStop’, should be held without bail for the next two months as authorities investigate the allegations against her. 

The internet celebrity boasts seven million followers on Instagram and more than eight million on YouTube. 

It appears that she uses the handle 'justyoss'.

The charges stem from a 2018 video of a gang rape committed against a girl who was only 16 years old at the time. The video reportedly shows a group of men inserting a bottle of champagne into the victim’s vagina. The footage was purportedly posted on social media and also appeared on a pornography website. 

The victim became the target of constant abuse and later ended up in a fight with a group of internet harassers who confronted her at a Mexico City shopping mall. When Hoffman learnt of the altercation, she published a video in which she called the victim a “whore” and claimed the teen had allowed the men to assault her in exchange for three packs of cigarettes. 

Then, in May last year, the victim took aim at Hoffman in social media posts of her own. In retaliation, the famous YouTuber shared a short portion of the video documenting the 2018 assault, and again criticized the teen. The victim, now 19, responded by pressing charges.

A lawyer representing the victim noted that the mere fact the YouTube star stored and shared the footage constituted a child pornography offense. “And she herself shows the camera the screen of her cellphone with the video of the rape on it,” he said. 

Hoffman, who faces 14 years behind bars if convicted, insists she has been involved in “an offense that I never committed.” 

“Unfortunately, I find myself involved in an issue that has nothing to do with me. But I hope that everything is cleared up and resolved soon,” she said in a message posted to social media. 

She doesn't seem to have a clue that she is in serious trouble. 14 years or even 14 months in jail would devastate the girl.

A criminal barrister became a criminal barrister after admitting making more than 300 indecent images of children.

Keith Rankin, 61, who also co-wrote three crime novels, pleaded guilty to three charges while appearing at Blackpool Magistrates’ Court, yesterday.

Rankin practised at the Bar in the north east, where he committed the offences between 2016 and 2020.

Some of the images were rated as the worst possible.

He was sent for sentencing at Preston Crown Court on Tuesday, September 7 and told by District Judge Jane Goodwin: “These matters are outside this court’s sentencing powers.”

Rankin, of Blue Anchor Court, Newcastle, and formerly of Dower House, Castle Eden, Durham, was placed on the Sex Offender’s Register, which means he must report to his local police station within the next three days.

He must hand over his passport and give police his National Insurance number – and tell officers if anyone under 18 stays with him.

Rankin has co-written four novels: Hung Jury; The Right to Silence; Abuse of Process; and The Oath. One online biography said Rankin was “recently described as the ‘enfant terrible’ of the Newcastle legal fraternity”.

Eric Bolling, host of the shows The Fox News Specialists and Cashin' In, has been suspended from the American cable network following a Huffington Post article alleging he sent lewd photos to co-workers.

According to a statement from Fox News to the CBC, an investigation into allegations against the television host is underway.

Report leads to suspension

A spokesperson for Fox News said Cashin In', a business analysis program which was taped Friday as usual, was pulled from airing once the media outlet "was made aware of the allegations" through the Huffington Post story. The show was replaced Saturday by a live half hour of news.

A story published Friday by Huffington Post alleges that Bolling, 54, "sent an unsolicited photo of male genitalia via text message" to three female colleagues several years ago. The article cites a dozen unnamed sources.

Bolling, a New York Times bestselling author, has held positions with Fox News Channel since 2008 as a host, conservative political commentator and financial analyst.

Network has faced multiple accusations in past year

Fox News, a right-leaning media outlet and the most-watched on American cable television, has faced a number of sexual harassment allegations recently.

Host Bill O'Reilly was fired earlier this year after a New York Times report revealed five women had received settlements totaling $13 million US after they alleged sexual harassment, prompting numerous advertisers to pull out of his highly rated talk show, The O'Reilly Factor.

Roger Ailes, who died in May at the age of 77, resigned from his post as head of Fox News amid accusations of sexual harassment.

Bolling 'does not believe' he sent texts

A lawyer for Bolling told the Huffington Post that his client "recalls no such inappropriate communications" and "does not believe he sent any such communications" when asked about the alleged texts.

Seriously? Are they his parts? It should be easy enough to determine if the texts are still available.

The law firm of Paul Weiss is conducting the investigation. According to Fox News, rotating substitute hosts will fill in for Bolling on Cashin' In and The Specialists, a nightly program which discusses top news stories through a multi-person panel.

The Specialists was created in May after Fox News was forced to revise its lineup to fill the void left by O'Reilly's ouster.
