Child sex abuse 'pervasive' at N.J. school for decades
USA TODAY NETWORK Mike Deak, (Bridgewater, N.J.) Courier-News

BERNARDS, N.J. — An investigation conducted for a New Jersey school found that there was "a pervasive problem of child sexual abuse" at the private school in the 1970s.

A private firm conducted a nearly yearlong investigation into abuse by former staffers at Pingry School in Basking Ridge, N.J. The school announced the investigation in March 2016.

According to the 44-page report, at least 27 students were abused by Thad Alton, a teacher, coach and Lower School principal, from 1972 to 1978 at the school's Short Hills campus. The victims interacted with him at Pingry or when he was a scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 64 or a camp counselor. Most of the victims were boys between 10 and 12.

"We are heartsick to learn the extent of his pattern of abuse," said Nathaniel Conrad and Jeffrey Edwards, Pingry headmaster and chairman of the board of trustees, respectively.

The two other former staffers that were the focus of the report were woodshop teacher Bruce Bohrer and the late Antoine du Bourg, a faculty member for 46 years who died in 2011.

The report, which T&M Protection Resources released Monday, offers extremely graphic details of the incidents which took place in  Alton's office during the school day, the school's gymnasium, the home of his in-laws and even at his school-owned home while his wife and children were at home.

An investigation found that Thad Alton abused at least 27 students from 1972 to 1978 at The Pingry School's Short Hills, N.J., campus. He is currently on the New York State Sex Offender Registry. (Photo: New York State Sex Offender Registry via (Bridgewater, N.J.) Courier-News)

The report found that after Alton left Pingry, at least one board member learned of the allegations against Alton, which led to Alton's arrest in 1979.

"Unfortunately," Conrad and Edwards wrote, "the school did not notify the full parent or faculty communities at that time."

Alton taught at Short Hills Country Day School from 1972 until it merged with Pingry in 1974. He taught at Pingry from 1974 to 1978. After leaving Pingry, Alton, 70, moved to Potsdam in upstate New York and worked at Clarkson University.

In 1990, Alton was convicted on charges of sodomy and sex abuse of boys age 10 and 12. He was incarcerated until 1995, according to New York State records.

Alton, who lives in Manhattan, is listed on the New York State Sex Offender Registry.

Bohrer, who taught at the Short Hills campus, had sexually inappropriate behavior with at least four students between 1978 and 1979, according to the report.

The report also found that du Bourg, a science and music teacher who left the school in 2002, engaged in harassing behavior and inappropriate physical contact with multiple students over his four decades at the school, with the most recent allegation in the 1980s.

"We are devastated by these findings and the reality that these abuses were, for decades, weighing on the survivors without our awareness or action," Conrad and Edwards wrote.

In a statement, a dozen victims of sexual abuse, calling themselves the Pingry Survivors, say they have instructed their legal team to continue an independent investigation into the abuse. The members say they want "to explore a way to work collaboratively with the school's investigators to share information in an appropriate manner."

The group lists three goals: disclose of the entire truth about sexual abuse at the school and the school's response at the time; have the school "hear, understand and acknowledge the suffering of each victim and to make meaningful amends"; and prompt Pingry "to dedicate itself to ensuring that this history can never be repeated."

The victims say their investigation found "a culture of silence and denial" among Pingry staffers.

"We acknowledge that the current Pingry leadership has a difficult task — to clean up a 'mess' that they did not personally create," they wrote.

The victims say they have not filed a lawsuit and "are making effort to avoid litigation."

"The past cannot be undone, but The Pingry School's response now will serve as a testament to Pingry's current values," they wrote.

child sexual abuse
By KLTV Digital Media Staff

CHEROKEE COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -
An east Texas man was found guilty of 34 counts of child sexual abuse in Cherokee County.

According to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, on March 30, 2017, in the Second Judicial District Court of Cherokee County the jury found Kevin Ray Morris Sr., of Jacksonville,  guilty of 34 counts of Child Sexual Abuse including, Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child, Sexual Assault of a Child, and Indecency with a Child.

The Honorable Judge R. Chris Day ordered all possible counts stacked, and told Morris after sentencing, “Mr. Morris, there is really no other way to put it, you are a monster.”

According to the CCSO, the judge went on to say, “Mr. Morris, if I could give you more time to serve, I would.”

During the trial, the State presented evidence that Morris had been molesting, raping, and threatening multiple children who ranged in age from 4 to 16 for more than twenty years before being brought to justice.

It was largely thanks to the efforts of Lieutenant Detective James Oden of the Jacksonville Police Department that the multiple victims were finally able to confront their abuser in open court, accordint to CCSO.

Through relentless investigation, Lieutenant Detective Oden was able to patch together a scurrilous record of child abuse dating back to the early 1990s.

Upon hearing that Lieutenant Detective Oden was tracking him, the Defendant fled to Ohio where he was later apprehended by the U.S. Marshals Service and transported back to Cherokee County for trial.

Multiple victims testified at trial, all of which told of the horrendous acts of sexual assault that the Defendant committed against them.

In addition to the life sentences stacked with 450 years in prison, the jury also assessed a $340,000 fine against Morris for his acts.

Salem man charged in sexual abuse of child, 12
By Julie Manganis Staff Writer

SALEM, MA — A registered sex offender from Salem has been arrested on new charges of aggravated child rape and child enticement, after police say he sexually assaulted a 12-year-old child in his Mason Street apartment earlier this month.

Scott Deschenes, 26, of 77 Mason St., a Level 2 sex offender, was taken into custody Friday morning on a warrant. He is also charged with witness intimidation, court records show.

He was ordered held without bail pending a hearing April 7 to determine whether he is too dangerous to release while awaiting trial.

According to a police report, the mother of the victim brought the child to the police station, Thursday afternoon. The child asked to be interviewed separately.

The child told investigators he’d met “Scott D.” through a friend. The child met Deschenes once in downtown Salem, at the Museum Place Mall.

After that, the child and Deschenes communicated on Snapchat, and the child said Deschenes made sexually-explicit comments such as “You’re cute, I wish I could touch you,” and “I like little boys.”

One day in mid-March, Deschenes allegedly sent a message inviting the child to “hang out” at his home “to play video games and chill.” Deschenes then picked up the child in downtown Salem.

The child, who was nervous, sent a Snapchat message to a friend saying, “If I go missing tell police 77 Mason St.”. He also sent a photo of the hallway leading to the apartment.

Once at the apartment Deschenes pushed the child onto a bed, held him down and sexually assaulted him, the child said.

Deschenes, he said, told him that if he told anyone “like police” what had happened, “I will hurt you.”

In 2011, Deschenes, then 20, pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of indecent assault and battery on a child and child enticement in a 2009 incident in Salisbury and was sentenced to a total of four years in jail, followed by probation, according to court records.

The 13-year-old child in that case met Deschenes at a skateboard park and then agreed to visit his home during the Christmas school vacation. During that visit, Deschenes sexually assaulted the child.

Deschenes continued to contact the child, asking him to pose for sexually explicit web videos and telling him they could make money doing that. The child lied, telling Deschenes he was grounded, to get out of it.
