Paedophile jailed for sex abuse spanning 16 years in UK

A "selfish and dangerous" paedophile has been jailed for sexually abusing girls as young as four over a 16-year period.

Dominic Scribbins, 39, from Plymouth, was sentenced to 20 years in prison at Bristol Crown Court earlier.

At a trial in November, he was found guilty of 16 offences against victims aged between four and 14 from Bristol and Dorset.

Judge William Hart said Scribbins "abused the trust of three different families in order to sexually abuse their young daughters".

Det Sgt Lucy Bryant, of Avon and Somerset Police, led a four-year investigation into Scribbins after one victim approached officers in 2020. Following this, other victims came forward.

In a victim impact statement read to the court, one woman detailed the horrific abuse inflicted on her.

"The flashbacks of my body being touched in such a way makes me feel physically ill," she said.

"It's like an out-of-body experience in the nightmare. I am always stood next to my younger self, living and watching the abuse happen.

"What you did to me as a child was so disgusting. I have no idea how you lived with yourself for all those years."

Another of his victims said she had been left "riddled with anxiety" and suffering from sleep paralysis.

Addressing Scribbins in court, she said: "You have made me terrified of living my life, terrified of bringing children of my own into this world because the reality I know is there are monsters like you living amongst us.

"I am here to tell you today that the little girl you took advantage of years ago, that little innocent girl you stole from, is no longer that terrified little girl.

"I am a survivor and stronger for it. I choose to not let you win. More than half of my life you got away with this, but not any more."

'No remorse'

Following sentencing, Ms Bryant delivered a statement outside the court, commending the "exceptional bravery, patience and courage" of the victims.

"Today, this bravery has been rewarded as a dangerous man is put behind bars for a very long time," she said.

"He was selfish in his actions, seeking to meet his own sexual desires with no remorse or care for those that he harmed.

"His crimes were hateful, and to then subject his victims to the long court process by not admitting to what he had done is cowardly.

"I hope that other victims know that no matter when the abuse happened, if something has happened to you then please report it to us. You will be supported."

Scribbins' convictions include eight counts of indecent assault and three counts of sexual assault of a child under 13.

He was handed an indefinite restraining order against the victims and was put on the sex offenders register for life.

UK man jailed for almost 20 years for awful

child sex abuse

A SEX predator who launched a campaign of sexual abuse and rape towards a child has been handed a jail term of almost two decades.

Chester Crown Court sentenced Runcorn man Christopher Aherne after he admitted two counts of rape and 13 counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child.

The 47-year-old also admitted supplying class A drugs, possession of indecent images of children and five counts of making indecent images of children.

During the hearing, the court was told how the abuse took place in Ellesmere Port over a two-year period, beginning when the victim was a young teenager.

Aherne’s offending was eventually uncovered in December 2021 after staff at a bowling alley reported witnessing a man who was acting inappropriately with a child.

Police attended, but on arrival Aherne had already left the premises. However, following enquiries, they were able to identify him as the suspect.

Following further enquires, officers also identified the child, who told police about what Aherne had subjected them to.

Aherne was subsequently arrested at his garage in Runcorn, where officers recovered his mobile phone.

While examining the phone, officers discovered several inappropriate images and with messages to the victim, asking them to share photographs of themselves.

Aherne, of Perrin Avenue in Runcorn, was subsequently charged with the sexual offences and jailed for 19 years and six months.

The sentence was welcomed by DC Christopher Tyrer, who led the investigation and said: “I would like to commend the victim for the bravery and courage they have shown throughout the investigation.

“While Aherne admitted his guilt, he has shown no remorse for his actions, and the victim will never be able to forget what he did to them.

“However, I do hope that the significant sentence handed to him will provide them with some closure and help them to move forward with their life.”

In addition to the custodial sentence, Aherne was also ordered to sign the sex offenders register for life.

DC Tyrer added:  “Nobody should have to experience what the victim has been though.

“If anything can come from this case, I hope that it encourages other victims of sexual offences to come forward and report them to us.

“Cheshire Police takes any allegation of sexual offences extremely seriously, and any allegation will be thoroughly investigated, with the wishes and needs of the victim as our main priority.

“Victims should never feel ashamed to talk about what they have been subjected to.

“They will receive the help and support they need from our specialist officers, as well as from other support agencies we work alongside, and all victims of sexual offences have the right to anonymity.”

Sexual offences can be reported to Cheshire Police by calling 101 or by visiting cheshire.police.uk/ro/report
