A Vancouver area man is threatened with jail for opposing his 14 y/o daughter's transitioning to male. He could easily end up in jail for even speaking about it. But speak he does, while honouring the command not to name any of the doctors or lawyers involved.

A Christian pastor in Surrey, British Columbia and his wife are facing numerous charges related to a long series of sexual assaults, and police are asking other alleged victims to come forward.

Thirty-four-year-old Samuel Emerson of the Cloverdale Christian Fellowship Church has been charged with 13 counts of sexual assault, 11 counts of being in a position of authority and touching a person for a sexual purpose and one count of sexual touching of a person younger than 16, according to an RCMP news release.

His wife, 37-year-old Madelaine Emerson, faces one charge each of sexual assault, being in a position of authority and touching a person for a sexual purpose and threats to cause death or bodily harm.

Samuel is the son of the senior pastor of the church.

The accusations against the couple stretch back as far as 2015 and were first reported in May of this year, according to police. Both Emersons were arrested May 18 and released on strict conditions.

After arrest

RCMP Cpl. Scotty Schumann described the charges as disturbing and said they relate to alleged offences against one person under the age of 16 and "several other young adults."

"A lot of us, especially parents for example, entrust that these people are going to have the best interests of our children at heart and when that trust is broken, you certainly feel terrible as a community but terrible as a parent for not being able to protect your children," he told CBC News.

Investigators believe there may be other alleged victims who have not come forward, and they're asking those people to trust the Surrey RCMP with their stories.

"We don't actually know there are other victims, but a lot of times with offences involving sexual assaults, victims don't want to come forward for a variety of reasons," Schumann said.

"If they know that other people are coming forward, they may find some strength in that and call the police."

Neither Emerson was previously known to police, RCMP say. No one was answering the phone at the Cloverdale church on Tuesday afternoon.

This must be a very traumatic time for this church. Samuel and Madelaine's names do not appear on their web site, but the senior Pastor and his wife are Randy & Christine Emerson. According to the Vancouver Sun, they are the parents of Samuel.

Cloverdale Church appears to have a Pentecostal bent to it although there are no obvious ties to any denomination on its website.

A man is awaiting his sentence and his partner is facing trial over an extremely violent attack on a 16-year-old Surrey girl.

A British Columbia man has pleaded guilty to several charges in the case of a 16-year-old girl who was tied up, beaten and sexually assaulted during a two-day ordeal in 2014.

Details of the violent and disturbing attack were revealed during a sentencing hearing for Paul Schipfel in a Surrey, B.C. courtroom on Tuesday.

Paul Schipfel pleaded guilty to a string of charges linked to crimes committed in November 2014.

Court heard that the teenage victim met Schipfel through a mutual acquaintance and was lured with the promise of a cleaning job.

The girl was taken to a vacant property, where she was tied up, gagged, threatened with death and sexually assaulted, the Crown said.

The Crown alleges that Schipfel’s common-law wife, Grace Davies, participated in the attack. Davies is being tried separately and none of the allegations against her have been proven in court.

The Crown alleges the teenage victim was told to call her attackers "master" and "mistress," or "mommy" and "daddy.” Prosecutors also allege the victim was told that she was the couple’s anniversary gift to one another.

After the girl was assaulted at the vacant property, she was taken to the couple’s residence in Surrey, where the Crown alleges that the torture and sexual assaults continued.

Prosecutors also allege the victim was injected with a drug and photographed. The court heard Schipfel was high on crystal meth while the crimes took place.

Hospital workers documented a total of 56 injuries on the victim’s body, the court heard. More than two years later, she still suffers nightmares, flashbacks and severe anxiety.

In seeking a 10-year sentence, the defence told court that Schipfel is genuinely remorseful for his actions. The Crown is seeking a 15-year sentence, less time served.

You get double for time served, if I am not mistaken, which means a 15 year sentence will see him back on the streets in 10 years. The poor girl will still be having nightmares and worse should she ever run into him. He should get a year for every injury inflicted on her body. 

The judge is expected to deliver the sentence in May.

Judge, please consider the victim! She will not be ready to encounter him in 10 years. The trauma of rape is magnified exponentially when coupled with violence and pain. There's a good chance this girl will never function normally in society the rest of her life. I pray otherwise, but...

B.C. Councillor Resigns while Suing Daughter for Revealing Sexual Abuse Suffered as Child

Eileen Wilke submitted her resignation as a Lions Bay councillor on Thursday

A Lions Bay councillor who is suing her daughter for revealing details of the childhood sexual abuse she suffered at the hands of her husband has resigned her seat on council.

Lions Bay Mayor Karl Buhr confirmed in an interview that village councillor Eileen Wilke handed in her resignation Thursday, adding that “she indicated that the reason she was stepping down was for the good of Lions Bay. But I don’t think Lions Bay has heard the last of this. It’s been very divisive in the community.”

Wilke has filed suit against her estranged daughter, Sherri Thomson, alleging that Thomson broke the terms of a 1996 settlement requiring her not to reveal details of being molested by her stepfather, Ronald Wilke. Thomson had agreed to settle her civil lawsuit against her parents in exchange for $33,000 to help pay for her therapy bills, agreeing not to disclose details of the case to anyone outside of her immediate circle.

But when Thomson discovered that her mother was running for council last November, she sent the Lions Bay mayor and several organizations in town copies of legal documents in which Ronald admits to the repeated abuse and Eileen acknowledges allowing him back into the home after learning about his transgressions. Thomson also recently filed a report with police in Ontario, where the abuse occurred.

In her resignation letter, which was released by the Village of Lions Bay Friday, Wilke said: “Since it is before the courts, my side of the story has to wait until the case is heard and decided or I will be breaching a court order with heavy punitive consequences. In the interest of peace and good government for Lions Bay, I am tendering my resignation as a Councillor effective immediately.”

Wilke has also stepped down from her volunteer positions with the Emergency Social Services and Block Watch organizations.

Resident John Pappas, who had started an online petition calling for Wilke’s resignation, said he was disappointed that mayor and council didn’t inform the community about Wilke’s past before she was elected in a Nov. 19 byelection.

Buhr said in statement Thursday that the village is subject to the privacy provisions of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, and to the law of defamation.

However, Buhr said that on the day before the Nov. 19 byelection, the village manager “received a call and package of documents as described in the January 24/25 articles in local print and other mediums.

“He immediately contacted Elections B.C. and our lawyers, to be advised that there did not appear to be anything in the materials which would disqualify the candidate under B.C. or Canadian law. With no grounds for cancelling the election or candidacy, the municipality was obligated by law to hold it.”

He said that the Squamish RCMP, which provides policing services to the village, advised that “there was nothing for the municipality to do, and indicated the RCMP would be taking no action unless requested by the Ontario Provincial Police.

“I can say that the village’s lawyers are confident that neither the village, nor its officers, nor its elected officials, did any wrong.”

Referring to the matter as a “half-story” that broke in the press, Buhr said: “The deplorable vitriol spewed out by social media trolls that brought this resignation about … angers and disappoints me. We have lost more than a councillor. A byelection will be held in due course.”

On Friday, Buhr said in a separate statement: “This is a troubling time for as close-knit a community as Lions Bay. Eileen Wilke has done a decent thing, to try to spare more divisiveness. I hope we extend that decency to her too, whatever our views.”

Thomson described the news Thursday as a win, but said she was still processing it.

“I think this is exactly what should happen, but emotionally it doesn’t do much for me,” she said. “Thank you to all the people in Lions Bay who made this happen.”

Thomson added that she hoped the resignation was a sign of remorse from her mother.

She's suing you, Sherri, I don't think there is much remorse there. Nor does there appear to be any desire for a relationship or she would never have allowed your abuser back into her life. I see it so often on this blog where a boyfriend or step-father sexually assaults their step-daughter. Too many single moms are just not careful enough in whom they allow into their homes and consequently, alone with their daughter.

Forgiveness is a necessary element in complete recovery from CSA. But, while a mother can forgive the man who molested her daughter, it's a whole different thing to let him back into your life and your home especially while your children are still young and vulnerable. That's a risk that is inexplicable!

The lawyer for a man found by a judge to have sexually abused his children – a ruling that also blasted B.C. social workers for giving the man continued access to the children over their mother’s pleas – has questioned the academic credentials of an expert used to support the allegation.

B.C. Supreme Court Justice Paul Walker last year delivered a scathing ruling in which he said social workers violated a court order by allowing the father unsupervised visits with his children. B.C.’s Ministry of Children faced a barrage of criticism after the judgment and announced a review. The province also appealed the ruling.

On Tuesday, a three-judge panel at the B.C. Court of Appeal heard from the father’s lawyer.

The family cannot be identified, and the mother has been identified only as J.P.

Morgan Camley, the father’s lawyer, told the court the trial judge failed to act as a “proper gatekeeper.” Ms. Camley took particular issue with the judge accepting expert evidence from U.S. psychologist Claire Reeves, saying her degrees appeared to be obtained through “diploma mills.”

“If this court finds that Ms. Reeves did perpetuate a fraud on the court by lying about her academic qualifications or other important things in her CV, it should absolutely affect the result of the case. Ms. Reeves’s evidence was crucial and central to the trial judge’s finding that [the father] sexually abused his children,” she said.

Ms. Reeves, who founded the group Mothers Against Sexual Abuse, could not be immediately reached for comment.

The B.C. Court of Appeal has allowed an "extraordinary" time extension to enable a man accused of sexually abusing his children to appeal a family case "more than three years out of time."

The decision comes after the court learned that the credentials of a so-called expert witness who testified in the major child abuse case were called into question by the accused father's legal team.

In launching his bid for appeal, B.G.'s lawyer, Morgan Camley, labelled Reeves "a fraudulent expert" who was "utterly unqualified."

Camley told the B.C. Court of Appeal that Reeves got her degrees from unaccredited companies posing as universities online, offering diplomas for a fee.

A release on the B.C. Court of Appeal website today said the decision to grant an application was granted.

"Although granting an extension of time in the face of a three-year delay is extraordinary, this case is extraordinary and the interests of justice overwhelmingly favour it. There is evidence that an expert tendered by the mother at trial to prove the abuse was a fraud. The "expert" not only may have lacked bona fide credentials and experience, but her opinion relied on a debunked and inadmissible scientific theory. This evidence permeates the judgment, including the sexual abuse findings," wrote Madam Justice Elizabeth Bennett.

Today's ruling means the legal team for the man — known only as B.G.— can now prepare an appeal of the original family case which heard evidence from experts that led to him being labelled a child abuser.

CBC News learned that the case involved a woman whose professional views have been labelled "bizarre."

Claire R. Reeves, 74, who calls herself a doctor of psychology, holds controversial views on the Catholic church, mind control and transgender individuals.

I believe she is still practicing as an 'expert witness' in the USA today. I reported Claire Reeves to the FBI in February or March, but received no acknowledgment from them.

How typical this is of a dishonest, amoral person perpetrating a fraud for money and completely without consideration of the confusion and mess she makes of the lives of children. It's almost always the children who suffer for the sins of adults.

Jack Hittrich, who is representing the mother in the court case, has said the judge’s decision was not based on Ms. Reeves’ evidence.

The province said social workers received expert advice from, among others, a pediatric psychologist who specializes in child sexual abuse. The province said the consistent advice was that the sexual abuse was unlikely to have occurred.

The father has denied abusing his children. The Vancouver Police Department investigated the matter in 2010, but charges were not laid.

A lawyer for the province made its submission Monday. The province has said the trial judge ignored relevant evidence and drew inferences that did not rationally emerge.

Andrew Gay, the lawyer for William Strickland, a social worker who was involved in the case, said the trial judge found his client showed “antipathy and ill will” toward the children’s mother. He said the judge erred by saying Mr. Strickland committed misfeasance.

“Aside from criminality, there is no finding that could be made against a social worker that is more damning than a finding of misfeasance in public office,” he said.

The appeal had originally been scheduled to be heard in June but was delayed until this week. It is scheduled to run through Friday.

Mr. Hittrich is to begin his submission Wednesday.

Justice Walker’s decision said the ministry showed “reckless disregard” when it falsely accused the mother of being mentally ill and removed four children from her care in 2009. The ruling, which stemmed from a lawsuit brought by the children’s mother, said social workers failed to investigate the children’s claims that their father had sexually abused them.

The B.C. government released its review into the matter last December. The review, led by former deputy minister Bob Plecas, said two decades of chaos produced a system that failed children in care.

The government acknowledged it needed to restore funding to child protection programs.

Woman Sentenced to Prison for Making Child Pornography with her Children

A 37-year-old Fort St. James, British Columbia woman was sentenced Monday to 2.5 years in prison for making pornography involving her son and daughter and then sending the images and videos to a man she met through an internet dating site

   
In issuing her decision, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Marguerite Church agreed entirely with Crown prosecution's decision on sentencing, noting it was actually at the low end of the range for the offences in question.

She was sentenced to 18 months on two counts of inviting a person under 16 years old to sexual touching and to a consecutive term of one year for one count of making child pornography.

Defence counsel had argued for two years less a day plus three years probation, arguing that the woman had pleaded guilty to the counts, had no previous criminal record, was remorseful, cooperated with the authorities and committed the crimes over a short period of time.

But Church found the case law simply does not support such a lenient sentence and described the actions as a "gross breach of (the woman's) trust obligations to her children."

She also noted the term will be served in the federal system which provides treatment programs for female sexual offenders, in contrast to the provincial one.

A court-ordered publication ban against information that would identify the son and daughter prohibits the woman's name from being printed.

The acts occurred about a half-dozen times over a two- to three-month period beginning in early November 2010 when the children were 11 and 12 years old.

The law caught up to her in April 2013 when police uncovered the images on the man's computer and traced them back to her home.

The man was eventually sentenced to four years in prison with the woman testifying at his preliminary inquiry in Calgary.

At the time of the incidents with her children, the woman had been drinking and smoking marijuana and had come off a failed marriage in which she was the victim of abuse, the court had heard.

Although it turned out to be the same person, the man had taken on different personalities in a scheme to coax her into the acts.

She complied with the man's demands in order to maintain the relationship and because he had threatened her and the children, the court had heard during a hearing on sentencing in August. She finally broke off the relationship and stopped drinking, telling her children "mum grew up," and later told a parole officer she had "let her guard down," the court has also heard.

In victim impact statements, the children said they continue to suffer significant emotional trouble with feelings of anger, fear, anxiety and lack of trust. Both want no contact with the woman.

Church also barred the woman for five years, once she's completed her sentence, from jobs or volunteer positions in which she is in a position of trust or authority over someone under 16 years old and from being in contact with anyone under that age unless in the presence of a parent or guardian. The woman's name will also be in the national sexual offender registry for life.

Creep Catchers Says Latest Sting Nabs Elementary School Principal in Abbotsford

British Columbia: The controversial group Creep Catchers says a man caught on video in its latest sting operation in Abbotsford may be an elementary school principal.

While Creep Catchers has made mistakes in the past identifying the subjects of their videos, some parents are convinced the man shown in the latest video is a Lower Mainland elementary school principal. Now, police and school officials are investigating.

The video was taken Oct. 14 in the food court at Sevenoaks Shopping Centre in Abbotsford. The man identified himself as “James,” a 33-year-old biologist.

A woman named Marie working with Creep Catchers posed as a teenage girl online to lure James. She says she didn’t know the man was possibly a principal until she read Facebook posts about him.

“They use that position of trust to gain the trust of these vulnerable children,” she told Global News.

One mother, who doesn’t want to be identified, says she has two children who attend the same school.

“A friend sent me a text that she said ‘Isn’t this the principal at your school,’ and she sent me a link to a video. I watched it and I was surprised, and yes that is.”

This isn’t the first time Creep Catchers has named high-profile individuals as the subjects of their stings.

Surrey RCMP officer Dario Devic has been taken off duty and charged with luring a child. He had also been charged with breach of trust, but last week the Crown dropped that charge.

In the wake of the suicide of a woman portrayed in a Creep Catchers’ video, Alberta police harshly criticized the group, calling them vigilantes.

“Individuals running Creep Catchers are about being judge, jury and executioner,” said acting Staff Sgt. Stephen Camp with ALERT’s Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) team.

ICE investigators are the experts in child sex cases. They say Creep Catchers constantly disrupt their work and have even caused predators to move on and re-offend in other provinces.

“The harm this group is causing to the public and law enforcement and injustice is just wrong,” Camp said.

While their actions are controversial, this mother supports their work.

“It can be controversial, but anything that keeps my children safer and me in the know is good for me.”

Police say they are now investigating. The school superintendent has also released a statement saying:

“The school district is aware of the video and is conducting an investigation. Due to protection of privacy legislation, the district is not able to comment any further at this time.

British Columbia Couple Charged with Human Sex Trafficking

RCMP arrested a Prince George couple after being called to a motel last week. The pair now face human trafficking charges. 

A Prince George, B.C. couple are facing human trafficking charges after RCMP raided a motel where a woman was allegedly held against her will and forced into the sex trade.

Jody Lee Burns, 33, and Jennifer Dawn Comadina, 34, are charged with trafficking in persons, forcible confinement and sexual assault with a firearm. Both are in custody.

Police say they arrested the couple after attending a motel in the 3600 block of Highway 97 on Wednesday evening.

In a telephone interview, one of the owners of the Rosebud Motel told the CBC the couple stayed in a room for about a week. She said she also heard another woman's voice coming from the room at one point but wasn't sure what to think.

"They looked normal," said Una Wu.

RCMP say they believe Burns and Comadina may have held the woman against her will for a number of days.

"The investigation is just beginning," police said in a news release.

"Police are looking into the possibility that there may have been other victims. Investigators are hoping that the apprehension of these suspects will provide any other victims with the courage to come forward."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Prince George RCMP or Crime Stoppers.

Minor Baseball Coach Charged with Voyeurism, Child Pornography

A Coquitlam man who coached kids hockey and baseball for decades has been arrested for a shocking crime.

A 59-year-old minor baseball and hockey coach from Metro Vancouver has been charged with a slew of child pornography and voyeurism offences.

Four counts of making or publishing child pornography, four counts of secretly observing or recording nudity in a private place, and one count of child pornography possession have all been approved against Randy Downes.

Downes is a Coquitlam resident who has coached various levels of hockey and baseball since the 1990s. On Wednesday, Mounties asked any parents who noticed concerning behaviour from the coach over the years to come forward.

"If there has been any suspicious behaviour over the years that wasn't reported, this is the time," Const. Jamie Phillipson told reporters.

Most details about the allegations against Downes have been sealed, but the RCMP said they conducted a search warrant at his home in April and seized a large quantity of digital storage equipment.

There were pictures on the equipment that investigators believe Downes, who is a photographer, took himself between June 2013 and April 2016.

"There were images in there of children in a public setting that did not know they were being photographed," Phillipson said.

"Going into specifics about what the images contained, I cannot do today."

The allegations are sure to shock and trouble parents whose children were coached by Downes, but Mounties added that none of the evidence they have gathered suggests the coach had any sexual contact with children.

Downes is the president of the Coquitlam-Moody Minor Baseball Association, and last year coached a team of children under 13.

The organization was unaware of the RCMP's investigation until Wednesday, when charges were approved. The B.C. Amateur Baseball Association issued a statement saying Downes has since been suspended from "all baseball, volunteer and board activity, effective immediately."

"After consulting with the RCMP, we have no information on any individual alleged victims involved with baseball. Should we become aware of any individual potential victims, we will try to assist them in accessing all appropriate resources," it read.

Downes made his first court appearance Wednesday and was released on conditions.

Elderly British Columbia Trucker Guilty of Sexually Exploiting Teenage Girl

A 74-year-old McBride, B.C. man has been found guilty of sexually exploiting a teenage girl when she was living in his home.

In reaching his conclusion, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Ron Tindale found the man, whose name cannot be published under a court-ordered publication ban against information that would identify the victim, used his position of authority to coerce her into having sex with him.

The girl and her mother had moved into the man's home in the community of 577 people 220 kilometeres east of Prince George in September 2009. She was 16 years old and he was 67 years old at the time.

During the time they lived there, he had sex with the girl on an ongoing basis whenever the mother was away as well as when she joined him on his trips as a long-haul trucker, Tindale found.

The girl had minimal education and no job and her mother relied on a limited income and the man was aware they had just left an abusive situation with the girl's father, Tindale said. Lacking the ability to support herself, Tindale noted the victim testified she had "nowhere else to go" and found she was "100 per cent dependent on the man" during the trips, which provided the only opportunity to leave McBride and see other parts of the country.

She also alleged the man raped her and, in one instance, threw her over his shoulder and took her into the bedroom to force sex on her. But Tindale found the man not guilty of sexual assault in part because injuries to his back and shoulder and a hernia suggested he was incapable of carrying out the acts. He also found she would not have gone on a road trip shortly after one of the incidents if her story was true.

Neighbours who testified at the trial described odd behaviour between the two while out in public given their difference in age. They were seen holding hands, engaging in open-mouth kissing, sitting close to each other in his truck and with the man's arm around her waist.

The man contended they were the acts of someone taking on the role of a father figure but Tindale disagreed.

"The manner in which the accused touched the complainant in public as described by the civilian witnesses is consistent with the accused and the complainant engaging in intimate sexual activity," Tindale said.

After about 18 months, the girl and her mother moved out of the home but she did not tell anyone what had happened out of embarrassment.

In March 2013 she filed a complaint with police. By that time, she had moved away from McBride and was living with a common law spouse but was concerned the man was stalking her, the court had heard during the trial.

The man, who appeared frail and had trouble standing and walking, faces at least one year in jail for the offence. He will remain out on bail until sentencing at a later date.

One year! One year for God only knows how many counts of statutory rape and child sex exploitation. Regardless of his health, he needs to be sentenced to much longer than one year, otherwise you're saying statutory rape and child sex exploitation are not a big deal. That would be a travesty of justice for underage girls.

A 37-year-old Fort St. James woman is facing sentencing for making child pornography involving her son and daughter and then sending the images and videos to a man she met through an internet dating site.

The incidents occurred about a half-dozen times over a two- to three-month period beginning in early November 2010, the court was told during a sentencing hearing Wednesday at the Prince George courthouse.

She agreed to the man's requests through a combination of fear – he had threatened to harm the children – and a desire to maintain the relationship. At the time, she had been drinking and consuming drugs and was suffering from low self-esteem as the result of a failed marriage.

By January 2011, she broke off the relationship and struck up a new one with another man in Fort St. James.

The law caught up with her in October 2013 when she was arrested, roughly five months after a police investigation into allegations that images of child pornography were being exchanged through a website that led to the arrest of the man in Calgary.

He was subsequently sentenced to four years in prison.

The children, who were 10 and 12 years old at the time of the incidents, are now in the care of relatives on her ex-husband's side of the family and are not ready to have contact with their mother, the court was told.

Crown counsel is seeking 2 1/2 years in a federal penitentiary noting sexual offender treatment is not available in provincial jails.

Defence counsel argues a provincial time of less than two years followed by three years probation is appropriate, noting she can participate in sexual offender treatment in the community once out on parole.

Her name cannot be published under a court-ordered publication ban against information that would identify the victims.

B.C. Supreme Court Justice Marguerite Church will issue her decision at a later date.

A 31-year-old New Westminster man has been arrested for allegedly making sexual advances on a woman with whom he met to play Pokemon Go. 

Delta Police say the 19-year-old woman arranged to meet the man, who was a stranger to her, on another online app to play the popular game, which was just recently released in Canada.

They met on July 13 just before midnight at the Annieville Lions Park in North Delta, says Acting Sgt. Sarah Swallow.

"When they met at the park, the man made some unwanted sexual advances," Swallow said. "She was able to leave the park and reported it to the police."

Police officers went to the park and found him there. 

He was arrested and is facing a possible sexual assault charge.

Are these people typical of Pokemon Go players? Are they generally that stupid? What kind of girl meets a complete stranger in a park near midnight? And the perpetrator didn't have enough sense to leave the park after the girl got away. There's not much chance either of these people will become rocket scientists.

Folks, someone you meet online playing Pokemon Go, or anything else, is not your friend! Be careful, or at least use a little common sense.

A man suspected of cyberbullying British Columbia teen Amanda Todd before she took her own life can be extradited, a Dutch court ruled following a hearing today in Amsterdam.

But, the court said, Aydin Coban must first stand trial in the Netherlands, where he faces 72 charges not related to Todd, including blackmail and the production and distribution of child pornography.

Authorities in Canada want Coban, 38,  brought to Canada to face five charges in connection with Todd's death.

In October 2012, Todd, a 15-year-old from Port Coquitlam, committed suicide after posting a video on YouTube saying she had been blackmailed by an online predator after exposing her breasts on a webcam.

Coban was arrested in the Netherlands the same year, after an investigation into online harassment involving Dutch victims.

He was eventually charged with extortion, internet luring, criminal harassment, and the possession and distribution of child pornography by the RCMP in the Todd case.

His trial in the Netherlands is due to start in 2017. He has denied harassing Todd or any other wrongdoing.

Hopefully, this will send a shiver down the spine of perverts harassing little girls in other countries.

A British Columbia pedophile convicted of producing online child pornography in Cambodia and disguising his face with a swirl has been sentenced to 5½ years in prison.

But because of his time already served, a B.C. Supreme Court judge has ruled Christopher Neil will remain behind bars for just over 14 months.

The full sentence is six months longer than the five years the Crown had requested. Prosecutor Brendan McCabe said he was "very happy with the decision."

Neil will also be restricted from using the internet for five years except to seek employment, and banned for life from playgrounds, parks and anywhere children might congregate.

Neil, 41, was nicknamed Swirl Face for the way he obscured his image in photos of him sexually abusing young boys in Southeast Asia.

In December, he pleaded guilty to five charges laid in 2013, including counts under Canada's rarely used child-sex tourism laws.

The province's Criminal Justice Branch said the guilty pleas pertained to two charges of sexual interference involving two boys under the age of 14 in Cambodia in 2003, one charge of possessing child pornography in Maple Ridge, (Vancouver suburb) in 2007, and two charges of accessing child pornography in Vancouver in 2013 and 2014.

During the sentencing hearing Neil's lawyer, Mark Thompson, argued that his client has served enough time in jail and further incarceration wouldn't help in his rehabilitation or reintegration.

Thompson presented a report on Neil by a psychologist who supported an argument for release, noting his client poses a low to moderate risk of directly re-offending.

Low to moderate risk - so why not let him have another go at destroying the innocence of children?

A Canadian man has been charged with child enticement in Idaho after police say he arranged to meet a 14-year-old girl for sex at a parking lot. 

The 42-year-old man from Chilliwack, B.C. thought he was exchanging messages with a young girl, but Ada County Sheriff's say it was actually one of their detectives. 

Police say the detectives began their investigation after the accused posted a Craigslist ad that indicated he was soliciting sex from teenage girls in Boise.

A detective answered the ad, posed as a 14-year-old girl. Police say the messaging between the two became sexual in nature.

John R. Jones was arrested, Friday, when he showed up at the meeting place.

He now faces three charges, including enticing a child over the internet, lewd conduct with a child under 16 and sexual abuse of a child under 16. 

Jones will make his initial court appearance Monday afternoon.

The crime of enticement of children over the internet in Idaho is punishable by up to 15 years in prison, police say.

Many pedophiles are not particularly bright. Using Craigslist is really not clever, and crossing the border to commit a crime in the country with the harshest prison sentences in the civilized world is really dumb. 

Canadian Charged in 'Brutal Sexual Assault' in Denver, 3 Others Suspected

A Victoria, British Columbia man is awaiting his next court date in Denver, Colorado, accused of six counts of sexual assault in what is described as a "brutal sexual assault of a 27-year-old woman" in a Denver hotel room. Three other Vancouver Island men are considered suspects in the case.

A release from the Denver District Attorney's office says 30-year-old Victoria resident Colby James Messer has been in custody since his arrest in Las Vegas on March 4.

Messer was released after posting a US$300,000 cash bond, spokeswoman Lynn Kimbrough of the District Attorney’s Office says in an email on Monday.

The conditions of his release include that he must surrender his passport, remain in Denver and wear a GPS tracking device, she says.

Ken Eichner, a Denver-based lawyer listed in court documents as representing Messer, declined to comment on the case.

The arrest warrant and an affidavit from police detailing the woman’s allegations that have been filed in court say three other men from Vancouver Island are suspects in the case, but their identities have not been released.

The affidavit alleges that the woman was out celebrating her birthday with a friend when they met two men who offered to buy them drinks.

The woman told police that she remembers going to a bar and having drinks with the men, but does not remember going with them to a hotel.

She said she woke up naked on a hotel room bed, bleeding and felt that she had been sexually assaulted.

The documents allege that objects available in the hotel room were used in the sexual assaults.

Denver police identified four suspects by looking at hotel records and surveillance footage.

Officers contacted police in Vancouver, who told them that none of the men had a criminal record, the affidavit says.

The document says Vancouver police told their Denver counterparts that driver licence records for the four men showed two of the men lived in Victoria and two lived in Port Alberni, B.C.

All four suspects attended Alberni District Secondary School in Port Alberni.

The affidavit says all four returned to Canada the day after the assault.

Messer was arrested in Las Vegas last week.

“It is my understanding that he had travelled to Las Vegas to propose to his girlfriend,” Kimbrough says in an email.

Messer is scheduled to appear in Denver court Tuesday.

The search for missing toddler Chase Martens resumes today in rural Manitoba.

The two-year-old boy went missing Tuesday from his farm home near Austin, Man., about 120 kilometres west of Winnipeg.

Dozens of volunteers fanned out across fields and wooded areas around the community Thursday. Searchers formed tight clusters and scoured pasture land late into the evening.

On Friday, volunteers came together at about 9 a.m. CT and continued the search, RCMP Sgt. Bert Paquet said.

The search has expanded beyond a 1½- to 3½-square-kilometre radius around the farm Thursday, he added.

As a teen in Nova Scotia, I helped search for a toddler, smaller than Chase, whom we found about a mile and a half deep into the woods.

After a couple weeks of warm weather, temperatures have dropped below zero in the Austin area each night since the boy was reported missing, prompting search and rescue officials to issue an urgent plea for help in the search from residents in and around the community.
