For 18 Months
A woman who was held captive in squalid conditions in a nine-square-foot outdoor toilet by her husband for 18 months has been freed by local authorities in India.
The horrific incident took place in Rishpur village in the northern Indian state of Haryana.
The unidentified, 35-year-old mother-of-three was rescued by police and welfare officers on Tuesday having been discovered in a malnourished and weakened state. The woman was periodically starved and denied water for days at a time by her captor.

“She was so weak that she could not even walk,” the district’s women’s protection officer, Rajni Gupta, said. “She ate eight chapattis when we gave her food.”
Her husband, Naresh Kumar, who maintains his innocence, claiming his wife suffers from severe mental illness, was arrested at the scene by police. He could not provide any evidence to support his claims.
“It is being said that she is mentally unstable, but it is not true,” Gupta added. “We have talked to her and it was apparent that she is not mentally unstable.”
The pair have been married for 17 years and have three children together between the ages of 11 and 15.
The woman was hospitalized before being left in the care of her cousin while police investigations into her horrific ordeal continue.

This week, a woman in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh was bludgeoned to death with an iron rod by an auto-rickshaw (a three-wheeler) driver. Reason? Police said that the driver was angry that the student was talking on her phone.
What madness is that? We've all been annoyed at someone talking on the phone at some time in our lives, but none of us have beaten them to death for it, I hope. Is there no such thing as self-control in India? Does it have to do with how lowly girls are in the minds of men? How insignificant they are that they can be beaten to death for something so trivial?
According to Indian news reports, Aafreen, a 20-year-old student, had gone from her village Rajpur, on Tuesday morning, for tuition classes with her brother Naved.
“Naved dropped her midway through to the destination, after which she boarded an auto. The girl knew the auto driver from earlier. The auto driver attacked her after a misunderstanding between the two,” a police official said, according to a report by the Indian news agency Asian News International (ANI).
While it is unclear what transpired between the two, reportedly, the accused began attacking the woman with an iron rod. According to news reports, Afreen was taken to a nearby hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries.
By the time Naved got to know about his sister's ordeal and reached the hospital, she had already died. "The accused was so vicious that after killing my sister, he started calling the case a road accident," Naved said.
The police confirmed that Hassan, the accused, has confessed to the crime. They also added that the student and the accused knew each other.
Based on the family's complaint, the police have registered a case against the accused driver. They also took his three-wheeler into custody.

Dubai: The Dubai Court of First Instance has jailed an airport cleaner for two years for locking up a Dubai girl inside the washroom and inappropriately touching her. The defendant will be deported after serving his sentence.
Records showed that a 31-year-old housewife from Sri Lanka was travelling out of the country with her eight-year-old daughter in November 2019 when the incident occurred. “Before boarding the aeroplane, my daughter went to the bathroom. I couldn’t escort her as I was standing with our luggage. She came back after five minutes and was terrified. She told me someone touched her body and pointed to the cleaner,” the mother said.
A policewoman calmed the girl and spoke to her about what happened. “My daughter said that the cleaner stopped her and asked her to enter the special needs bathroom. He locked the door and touched her body,” the mother added.
Investigation
The 23-year-old Nepali defendant got scared when the girl yelled for help and left the bathroom. The police identified four cleaners who were in the area during the time of the incident with the help of CCTV footage. “One of them admitted that he saw the defendant going outside the bathroom and later the girl came out crying,” a police officer said, according to court records. During interrogation, the defendant admitted to abusing the girl.
Dubai Public Prosecution charged the defendant with kidnapping the girl, locking her inside the bathroom, sexually abusing her and trespassing. The verdict will be subject to appeal within 15 days.

A 23-year-old Indian-origin woman living in the US was charged with attempt to murder after she gave birth to her baby while taking a shower, panicked, and tossed the baby out of the bathroom window. The condition of the baby is critical, and the mother is under arrest on charges of attempted murder, according to a US media report.
Apparently, Sabita Dookram, a resident of Queens in New York, threw the baby out of the window into an alley, the New York Post reported. Later on, instead of informing someone, Dookram cleaned the washroom, showered, and took a nap.
She told investigators: "I had a baby out of nowhere. I went to the bathroom, and the baby popped out of me. I didn't know what to do, I'm sorry. I panicked and threw it out of the bathroom window. I did not check on the baby. I put my clothes in the laundry hamper in the bathroom, I showered and went to sleep.”
Dookram added that she cut the umbilical cord herself, with a scissor in the bathroom.
Neighbours heard the cries of the infant, who survived the fall. Once they located the child, the neighbours informed the police and took the newborn to a nearby children's hospital in a critical condition.
Medical checkup showed that he had numerous injuries, including brain bleeding, swelling of his brain, skull fracture. He was immediately put on a ventilator at the hospital and is still on life support in critical condition.
Following the investigation, Dookram was charged with attempt to murder, the report said. Assistant District Attorney Melissa Kelly in the court argued for $50,000 (Dh183,650) bail for the suspect, noting that Dookram "is able to hold down a job."
"Meanwhile, she threw a full-term baby boy out of a window over five feet high [and left him] naked on the ground for several hours," Kelly added.
"She is able to do her laundry. She is able to clean the bathroom ... all while the child was crying,'' Kelly said. She added that authorities have video surveillance where the baby's wails are audible.
The prosecutor claimed that Dookram made "numerous contradictory statements" to cops to cover up her heinous crime.

A 35-year-old man, Chindalal Saket, was arrested by state police for murdering his wife and one-year-old daughter from Rewa district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday. The news has created an uproar on social media.
While sharing the incident, a Facebook user Tamanna said: “Why do they marry when they can’t take care of a family? What a torturous death.”
Talking to the media, officials confirm that Saket murdered his family and has cut their bodies into 22 pieces.
According to the district’s superintendent of police, Rakesh Singh said: “The accused Saket got into an argument with his wife suspecting her of infidelity. He then attacked her with a sharp-edged weapon. Saket slit his wife’s throat. He then strangled his one-year-old daughter because she was crying,” he added.
“He was carrying the body parts in a cloth to a forest area when the villagers stopped him after noticing a foul smell. When they checked the cloth, they found pieces of his daughter’s body.”
Another Facebook user Ritesh Sharma posted: “Gruesome death. It’s a real shame to humanity, especially during these times.”
Police arrested the accused on Thursday when he was trying to dispose the body parts, reportedly.
During the investigation, police said that Saket has confessed to the crime. The accused was produced before the court on Friday.
Later, he was remanded to judicial custody according to the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

Upset over giving birth to a second girl child, a 30-year-old woman in the Indian state of Punjab allegedly killed her older four-year-old daughter by banging her head against a wall on Saturday. The shocking incident happened in Ludhiana district.
According to Indian news reports, the woman named Priyanka, married to a migrant labourer named Tinku Yadav from Bihar, gave birth to her second daughter two months ago.
A police official said: “The woman was upset because she did not have a son.”
Her husband, Tinku, told the police that following the birth of her second child, Priyanka would always remain upset and quarrel over the smallest issue.
Or, was Tinku the one who was upset and argumentative? At the very least, he was not able to support his wife emotionally during this time.
Tinku told the police that on Saturday morning, Priyanka went up to the terrace of the house, where the bathroom is located. She called Darpan, her elder daughter, to bring her some shampoo. But, when the child took the shampoo to the mother, her mother started hitting the child’s head on the wall, a news report said.
"She thrashed her 4-year-old daughter to death by hitting her against the wall and the floor of her bathroom in her house at Navneet Nagar in Salem Tabri locality," a police official said.
The neighbours heard the girl screaming and reached the couple's house and knocked at their door. Concerned, Tinku ran up to the terrace but found his wife standing over their daughter’s motionless body. The wall and the floor were stained with blood.
The child had died on the spot.
According to a report by the Indian news agency Press Trust of India, Joint Commissioner of Police Bhagirath Meena said that the police arrested the woman and charged her with murder.

Yesterday, a 16-year-old girl in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh allegedly beat her father to death, because he used to get drunk and assault her mother. The incident happened in Bhopal on Wednesday evening.
According to an Indian news report, a police official said: “The man was unemployed and lived off the earnings of his eldest son, who works as a mason. The family was dealing with a difficult situation as the man was an alcoholic and would abuse his family. He was especially violent towards his wife.”
At around 6:30pm on Wednesday, the family was sitting together discussing the eldest son’s marriage when the father started quarrelling with the mother again.
Furious and tired of the daily abuse, the 16-year-old picked up a washing bat and bludgeoned her 45-year-old father. He began bleeding profusely, but the girl picked up a lohangi (a traditional stick with iron rings) and kept battering him.
After killing him on the spot, she dialed 100 to call the police and confessed to the crime. She also told them that she was waiting to be arrested.
Bhopal Police have registered a case and sent the teenage girl to a juvenile shelter, which helps to enforce protection, rehabilitation, and restoration of juveniles (below the age of 18 years) convicted for a crime.
Not sure she needs rehabilitation, but her brother might. Why did he not stop his father? Why did he not intervene and keep his sister from killing his father? The girl is a hero in my books. The son, not so much!

In a suspected case of honour killing, a father allegedly stabbed his 14-year-old daughter to death in the city of Karachi, Pakistan, on October 17. According to the police, the man had also killed his wife 11 years ago for the same reason.
The incident occurred in Karachi’s low income housing area of Madina Town. According to news reports, the man identified as Murad killed the teenager in the early hours of the day.
Murad confessed to killing his daughter “for honour” and said that he does not regret stabbing her multiple times and killing her, as per news reports.
Speaking to a local news outlet, a neighbor identified as Shahid was quoted as saying: “It was around three in the morning when I heard screams coming from Murad’s house. The victim had been crying for help, but by the time I, and other neighbours, reached there, she was already dead. We saw her body outside the home.”
Speaking about the incident, another neighbour Benazir Buneeri said: “I have lived next to them [the father and daughter] for 10 years I have never seen her [the victim] do anything. I have never seen her even standing at her house’s gate.”
An advocate of the District and Sessions Court in Karachi’s Malir locality, Kiran Zahra, said that the accused should be handed a severe punishment.
According to a source, the suspect called the police station in the early hours of Saturday to confess to the murder and turn himself in, local news outlets reported.
A First Information Report (FIR) was registered against Murad for homicide. Furthermore, the police revealed that Murad had also murdered his wife 11 years ago in the name of honour.
Seems he has a very high standard of honour for his wife and daughter, but not himself. Hope he rots in prison for the rest of his life with his honour.
