Police in the Indian city of Mumbai arrested a 30-year-old man for allegedly raping a five-year-old girl on Monday. The shocking incident has left Indian social media users angry at the rising instances of rape in the country and the lack of immediate judicial action.
Police officials told news media outlets that the man was an acquaintance of the girl’s father. An official said that the accused knew the family and would often visit their residence in Mumbai's suburb Goregaon.
On Monday afternoon, the accused visited the girl’s home and found her alone. Taking advantage of the situation, he sexually assaulted the girl.
The girl's elder brother reached home around the same time and immediately alerted his neighbours. He also quickly informed his parents about the incident.
The parents went to the local police station and lodged a First Information Report (FIR) against the accused, the official added.
According to news reports, cops arrested the accused on the same day. Police have charged him under various sections of the Indian Penal Code for rape, and also under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO).
Many took to Twitter to urge severe punishment. @athimoolamias posted: “It is very sad... The culprit should be punished severely.”
Tweep @MadMonkIndie wrote: “These men are not scared of the consequences, they are so consumed by evil that they commit this sort of a crime with a child… Such people have no guilt.”
According to India’s National Crimes Records Bureau, in 2016 the rape of minor girls increased by 82 percent compared with the previous year. And, across all rape cases, 95 per cent of rapists were not strangers but family, friends, and neighbours.
Tweep @liyakat7070 added: “Minors easily targeted by rapists, so parents have to take extra care of them.”
India: 16-y/o pregnant girl strangled to death by father for 'shaming' family

A 16-year-old pregnant girl was allegedly killed by her father and elder brother in a village in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh for “bringing shame to the family”. Apparently, the Dalit (lowest caste in India's outlawed caste system) girl had been raped by an acquaintance and gotten pregnant.
The shocking incident came to light on Tuesday after the police found the mutilated body of the girl, buried in a riverbed, in the Shahjahanpur district of the state. The police identified the girl and reached her family for further details.
According to an Indian news report, when the police asked them about the girl, the family initially said that she was living with a relative. Later, the father of the girl confessed to the crime. A police official said: “The father has confessed to having killed his daughter because she was pregnant, and people had started insulting him publicly.”
Police found that the girl had remained silent about the alleged rape, till her baby bump betrayed her ordeal.
When the news of the unmarried girl’s pregnancy spread in the village, villagers started insulting her family members, who felt ashamed. The father and brother of the girl beat her up and strangled her to death. Her body was then decapitated and buried in a nearby riverbed.
The police said: “The girl’s elder brother is also involved in the murder, and we have booked both of them under sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code. We have also questioned the mother and other relatives, but we didn’t find their involvement in the murder.”
According to the police, the minor girl didn’t reveal the name of the rapist to the family. Police are now trying to find the accused.
This will go down as another honour-killing, but it has nothing to do with honour and everything to do with pride. The men are unable to accept insults because their pride is too strong, even as Dalits. They would rather torture and murder their daughter or sister than to be insulted. How pathetic they are as men.

IPL in UAE: CSK captain Dhoni's 5 y/o daughter Ziva

New Delhi: In a disturbing incident, Mahendra Singh Dhoni's five-year-old daughter Ziva received rape threats from social media trolls following Chennai Super Kings' loss to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Tuesday night.
CSK failed to chase a 168-run target, losing the game to KKR by 10 runs.
Dhoni's wife, Sakshi, got the threats on her Instagram account. The threats created an outrage on social media, especially from women.
Actor-turned-politician Nagma tweeted, "Where are we headed as a Nation? It's disgusting Dhoni's 5-Year-Old Daughter Ziva is Getting Rape Threats after CSK Lost IPL Match to KKR. Mr #PM what is this happening In our country??"
This tweet belies the naivety of many Indian politicians with regard to just how much child sexual abuse occurs in the country. It's not so much 'where you're headed' as to 'where you are'. This is not unusual behaviour for anywhere on the sub-continent, in my humble opinion.
Sowmya Reddy, MLA from Jayanagara, Karnataka, wrote on her timeline, "This is just nasty! What's happening to our country? Where are we heading?"
Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi tweeted, "This has to be the most disgusting example of how social media platforms are being misused."
Nope! Not even close! If you know where to look, you can find lots of 5 y/os actually being raped on video, and some even being murdered afterwards, or during.
Fans have often taken out their ire on the players. In earlier days, they have even pelted stones at players' homes, burnt posters and shouted abuses.
However, targeting the daughter of a player in such a way has been unheard of before.
That's not to say it never happened, just that it was never announced beforehand prior to social media.
