Teacher, 24, who had sex with student, 14,
and sent him lingerie pics is spared jail

A teacher convicted of sexually abusing a boy, 14, after targeting him at a special education school has been spared jail.
Allyssa Gustafson, 24, had also sent her victim pics of herself posing in lingerie and swimwear, a court in Illinois was told.
Cops said that Gustafson, a special needs teacher’s assistant in Champaign, Illinois, abused the teen on at least five occasions, from March to August 2019, reports The News-Gazette.
The mom-of-two, who now lives in Tuscola, pleaded guilty to a single count of aggravated criminal sex abuse for engaging in a sex act.
Her plea deal was in exchange for the dismissal of a more serious count of criminal sexual assault initially brought by Assistant State Attorney Kristin Alferink, said the Gazette.
If convicted of the more serious charge, Gustafson would have faced penalties ranging from four to 15 years in prison.
But, on Friday, Judge Roger Webber told court he did not believe that Gustafson - who has no prior criminal convictions - was a danger to the public.
She was sentenced to four years of probation, with the judge also ordering the pervert to go on the sex offender register for life.
He dubbed it “the modern-day equivalent of the scarlet letter”, the Gazette added.
Her victim was sexually abused at his home.
She had been working as an assistant at Circle Academy in Urbana - a school for pupils with behavioral and emotional difficulties - which allowed for access to him.
When cops investigated the abuse in late 2019 they found messages between Gustafson and her victim on Snapchat and Facebook Messenger.
Some of those exchanges showed that she was concerned about fellow employees at the academy discovering her perverted actions. So strong were her fears that she ordered him to get rid of all the evidence.
The Gazette said that her victim's mom saw photos of Gustafson, and recognized her - as she had been at their house. However, the boy's mother had wrongly assumed that she was a high school senior.
Sex-offender evaluator and treatment provider Michael Kleppin told court that Gustafson was a low risk to re-offend. He also testified that she had been helped by counselling over the past seven months.
Gustafson's attorney, Mark Lipton of Champaign, said she had strong family support, and would be monitored under probation.
Gustafson told the court: “I made a terrible error in judgment and this has hurt a lot of people. I am sorry for the pain I have caused so many people.”
She also apologized to her victim and the boy's mother, both of whom attended sentencing.

Nebraska man set for trial in February for child sexual assault
HARTINGTON, Neb. — A South Sioux City, Nebraska, man will stand trial in February on five charges — including two counts of first-degree sexual assault of a child — for an alleged June incident at a Lake Yankton beach.
Guillermo Coronado Ortiz, 60, could receive a life sentence if convicted on either count of first-degree sexual assault of a child. In Nebraska, the charge is a Class 1B felony with a penalty ranging from 20 years to life imprisonment.
Coronado Ortiz received a pre-trial hearing Friday in Cedar County District Court in Hartington, Nebraska. He had pleaded not guilty to the five charges during his August arraignment.
He is scheduled for a five-day trial starting Feb. 8, according to the Cedar County District Court Clerk’s office. A pre-trial conference is scheduled for Jan. 25.
Coronado Ortiz is charged with engaging in sexual contact with a 15-year-old girl at Lake Yankton and with providing her with alcohol, according to court records.
The first sexual assault charge alleges digital penetration, while the second charge alleges penile penetration.
Both charges allege the defendant, being at least 25 years of age or older, subjected another person at least 12 years of age but less than 16 years of age, to sexual assault.
In both cases, the alleged victim is listed with the same initials and the same birth month and year of October 2004.
Court documents outline the events leading up to Coronado Ortiz’s arrest and charges.
A woman called the 911 dispatch around 6:20 p.m. June 16 concerning the alleged incident at the Gavins Point Project’s Lake Yankton swimming beach. Cedar County authorities responded to the call because the site is located in that county.
After investigating, law enforcement officials arrested Coronado Ortiz (7th story on link) and transported him to the Cedar County Jail in Hartington.
Besides the sexual assault charges, Coronado Ortiz faces three other charges related to the Lake Yankton incident. They include:
• One count of child abuse, a Class 3A felony, which carries a maximum penalty of five years imprisonment and a $10,000 fine.
• One count of public indecency, a Class 2 misdemeanor, which carries a maximum penalty of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine;
• One count of procuring alcoholic liquor to or for a minor, a Class 1 misdemeanor carrying a maximum penalty of one year in jail and a $1,000 fine.
Previously, a preliminary hearing in Cedar County Court determined sufficient evidence existed for the defendant to be bound over to Cedar County District Court for further proceedings.
Cedar County Court Judge Douglas Luebe bound Coronado Ortiz over for formal arraignment in Cedar County District Court Aug. 20.
The state’s motion to increase bond was denied and remains $125,000 at 10%, according to court records. The defense had previously sought a bond reduction, which was denied. Under the current bail terms, the defendant would be released from jail for posting $12,500.

A Lincoln County woman convicted of sex crimes alongside her boyfriend will serve 10 life sentences in prison, Oklahoma Attorney General Mike Hunter announced Friday.
Crystal Bales, 35, was sentenced to life after a jury found her guilty on multiple counts of child sexual abuse involving her and her boyfriend’s four children, age 9 months to 10 years old.
Bales’ boyfriend, Jonathan Moran, 43, pleaded guilty last year to seven counts of sexual abuse involving children younger than 12 and was sentenced to 40 years in prison.
Two of the children were Bales’ and Moran’s, while each adult had a child from previous relationships, according to a news release.
Three of the children had tested positive for methamphetamine, and one tested positive for marijuana, the Attorney General’s Office said in the press release.
“The children in this case suffered unimaginable horrors at the hands of monsters,” Hunter said. “These individuals have no business being a part of our society, and we want to ensure they, and those who do unspeakable acts to children stay behind bars for as long as possible.”
