Kodiak, Alaska Youth Leader Arrested for Child Sex Abuse

ANCHORAGE - ALASKA
The longtime organizer of a traditional drumming program in Kodiak has been arrested for sexually abusing a 17-year-old girl.

Michael J. Daquioag, 56, was arrested in late February by Kodiak police and faces child sex abuse and child pornography charges. For the past ten years Daquioag has been the primary director and teacher of the Kodiak Island Drummers, a nonprofit musical performance group made up mostly of children and teens.

Kodiak Police Chief Ronda Wallace said that a 19-year-old woman reached out to police on Feb. 1, alleging Daquioag sexually assaulted her continuously over a period of about one year, from August 2012 to June 2013. The woman said the abuse occurred when she was 17 years old.

A police affidavit filed in court Feb. 27 states the victim was involved with the drumming group for about two weeks before the 2012 Alaska State Fair. After the fair, the victim said Daquioag offered private drum lessons, first at her home and later at his.

It was during these lessons that the victim alleges Daquioag began kissing her. The advances eventually became more frequent. When the victim was not receptive, court records say Daquioag “would proceed with a demeaning verbal tirade” that ended with the girl “giving in” to sex.

The victim told investigators that the sexual advances continued through June 2013, when she says Daquioag also used webcams and video chat software to take nude pictures of her.

February search warrants allowed police to record phone conversations and text messages from Daquioag, and police eventually searched his home and used a warrant to access his email account and found additional nude photographs of the victim taken while she was underage.

Police served warrants on Feb. 20. When Daquioag learned who filed the complaint of sexual misconduct, police records say “his body went limp and he tilted his head back and quietly uttered ‘Oh my God.’” Police say Daquioag soon admitted to having a sexual relationship with the victim.

Daquioag was formally charged on Feb. 27 with one count of sexual abuse of a minor, one count of exploitation of a minor, and one count of possession of child pornography.

Wallace said the investigation is ongoing, and urged anyone with information on the case to contact Kodiak police.

“We’ve had several concerned school members and teachers … because (Daquioag ) had a lot of contact with children,” Wallace said.
