Happiness Not Allowed - Another 'Honour Killing' in India

A 26-year-old IT worker has been found strangled at home in what police say is a rare "honour killing" in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

While this story is not about Child Sex Abuse specifically, it deals with a mind-set that has led to child sex abuse and the maiming or murder of children by their own parents for an obtuse sense of honor.

In June, 2010, in Delhi, two teens from different castes were beaten for hours, probably electrocuted, and finally murdered by the girl's father and uncle in the name of restoring family honor. Apparently, it is better to be a murderer than to have someone of a lower caste in the family.

Police say her parents, who are in custody, have admitted to murdering their daughter after she married against their wishes.

She wed another IT professional on 21 February.

But her parents thought her husband came from an unsuitable community, police say.

"The parents have confessed to the crime. They strangled her with her chunri [scarf] by tying it to the bed post in their house,'' Gopinath Jatti, superintendent of Guntur police, told BBC Hindi's Imran Qureshi.

"When the pressure built up, the girl informed her parents that she was in love with her friend. She tried to convince them but they obviously weren't."

The couple got married in Hyderabad and then her parents took them to Guntur with the promise of a traditional ceremony.

"The murder got to be known when the friends of the bridegroom got suspicious and went to the woman's house," the superintendent added.

The official added that so-called honour killings are rare in this part of India. Her parents have yet to make any public comment.

Not rare enough obviously. When murdering your own child and going to jail restores honor to a family, that family has a completely perverted sense of honor. Unfortunately, it resonates through Indian society though most parents aren't lunatic enough to murder their children.

The absurdity of honor killing is made obvious in this news report from 2011: cases of "honour killings" are regularly reported from the states of Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh which are deeply conservative and patriarchal regions.

In the last couple of years, many cases of brutal honour killings have been reported from the national capital, Delhi, too.

On Sunday, two widows were bludgeoned to death in a Haryana village by a man who accused them of being in a lesbian relationship.

The 23-year-old killer was the nephew of one of the women. He was on parole, having served a sentence for rape.

He said he had killed the women to protect his "family's honour". He has been arrested.

Three years ago Indian Supreme Court made this comment on honor killings: "There is nothing honourable in honour killing or other atrocities and, in fact, it is nothing but barbaric and shameful murder," judges Markandeya Katju and Gyan Sudha Mishra said.

"We have heard of khap panchayats (Village Caste Councils) which often decree or encourage honour killings or other atrocities in an institutionalised way on boys and girls of different castes and religion, who wish to get married or have been married, or interfere with the personal lives of people," they said.

"We are of the opinion that this is wholly illegal and has to be ruthlessly stamped out."

Please pray for Indians to abandon this spectacularly erroneous attitude toward honor. And please join my prayer team by praying my 3:15 PM prayer daily.
