News agencies all over the world are reporting the return of 63 girls and women to their families on Saturday after being abducted by Boko Haram two weeks ago. They are virtually all reporting the same story, obviously copying from one to another.
But there are some very curious things about this case.
1. Neither the government nor the military confirmed it.
2. No pictures of the girls or personal stories have become available yet.
3. 70 girls and women were abducted, 7 are still unaccounted for.
4. 31 boys were also abducted in that raid, none of whom escaped - were they made into child soldiers?
5. Neither the government nor the military ever actually acknowledged that the girls/women were missing in the first place. So, obviously they can't confirm what they refused to acknowledge. In fact, anonymous sources say that there was a grand-conspiracy to cover-up the abduction.
It's election year in Nigeria and the government didn't want the embarrassment of having another major abduction before they have retrieved even one of the Chibok girls. So, they pretended it didn't happen, but then the Governor of Borno State called for an inquiry into the incident.
It seems the Nigerian government and military's first response is always to lie. Alhaji Kashim Shettima, the Borno State Governor, seems to be the only politician who will give you a straight answer. And yet, the federal government had accused Borno State of master-minding the kidnapping in Chibok. Apparently, they blame everyone except themselves.
Still waiting for solid confirmation on this story.
