Legal consultant from Johannesburg arrested in child pornography investigation
JOHANNESBURG - A 14th suspect, a 64-year old man, has appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate Court for possession and distribution of child pornography in an ongoing investigation called Operation Cloud 9.
According to a statement released by the South African Police Service (SAPS), equipment suspected to have been used to share child abuse images including cell phones, laptops, an external hard drive, CDs and DVDs have been seized.
The investigation into paedophile ring that uses software to share child abuse images started in 2014 when a take-down operation was conducted in conjunction with members of the Gauteng Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences and their counterparts of Belgium Law Enforcement officer, says the SAPS.
Since December 2014, several suspects who were sharing the child abuse images and videos were arrested in South Africa. The 14th suspect, who is a legal consultant, was arrested on Monday at The Hill, south of Johannesburg. Child Pornography was found on his laptop. The suspect is out on R6000 and will again appear in court on 18 August.
The SAPS warns that child pornography victims are often abused by someone they know. This includes grooming the children and encouraging secrecy. They say members of the community should help in preventing child sexual abuse by. amongst others, talking to children about child abuse, and engaging the community to keep an eye out for children who show signs of abuse.
The SAPS reiterated that it is illegal to visit a child pornography site.
Police are appealing to anyone who may have information about child pornography or any abuse of children to contact Colonel Heila Niemand (082 780 2956) who heads the Electronic Crime Investigation Unit at the Gauteng Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences.

Did sex abuse carer, 70, prey on more boys?
Flora Thompson Argus
A CARER jailed for systematically abusing vulnerable boys at a special school has been accused of more crimes.
Police confirmed another person has come forward alleging they were assaulted by Robin Carter.
The 70-year-old was jailed for nine years in May after being convicted of ten indecent assaults of three boys aged between ten and 12 in the mid 1990s.
He is now a registered sex offender for life and is the subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order restricting his access to boys.
Carter, of Lewes Road, Westmeston, worked at Ditton Place in Staplefield, near Haywards Heath, as a child care officer between 1984 and 2000. The building closed in 2002 but had been part of nearby Brantridge School, a residential special school for boys with social, emotional and mental health difficulties.
Sussex Police said officers were in the early stages of an investigation.
The news comes as lawyer Peter Garsden, who leads the fight for justice on child sex abuse, urged victims and witnesses to come forward.
He is already representing those who suffered at the hands of Carter and claims there are likely to be dozens more victims who are yet to come forward.
He said it was time for victims to “stop suffering in silence”, adding: “This is just the tip of the iceberg in my experience in cases where abuse takes place in an institution, the chances of the incidents being this isolated are extremely slight. These type of offenders have usually abused many more children over the years.
“You will not be judged and everything is anonymous. From our research and interviews we believe there to be many more victims out there. Many of these victims wouldn’t have told even their close family so coming forward and admitting the abuse is very hard to do. But it can help the healing process.”
“We are interested in speaking to anyone who was a former pupil at Brantridge Boarding School who had any contact with Mr Carter, any former staff, or anyone else involved with the school, particularly between 1994 and 1995.”
A victim Carter was convicted of abusing has launched legal action against Royal Borough of Greenwich council which ran the home.
He said the carer would regularly watch him and other boys naked in the shower from the age of 10 and later went on to molest and fondle him in bed.
The victim, who has to remain anonymous for legal reasons and is now in his 30s, told how he lived in a dormitory with five other boys but was usually left alone when they went home at weekends, leaving him him vulnerable to Carter’s attacks.
He said the abuse had a profound effect on his life and he has battled with flashbacks and depression ever since.
A council spokesman said: “The Royal Borough of Greenwich has received a claim regarding alleged incidents at Ditton Place. As this is an on-going legal matter, it would not be appropriate to comment further.”

Marske man found with dozens of child abuse images
Andrew Simpson pleaded guilty to possessing 146
indecent images over a five year period
BY DAVID HUNTLEY
A Marske man actively searched for child sexual abuse images and was found to have over 100 still and moving images in his possession.
Andrew Simpson has now admitted possessing 146 indecent images over a five year period - some of which were in category A - the most serious category.
Appearing at Teesside Magistrates’ Court the 57-year-old was said to have four still and moving images of category A, 58 in category B and 84 in category C in his possession.
Rachael Dodsworth, prosecuting, said that the offences were carried out between September 2012 and January this year.
She said Simpson claimed he was searching for adult pornography when he “accidentally” happened upon child abuse images which then “escalated” from there.
Simpson, of Sherwood Drive, Marske, would then “deliberately” search for “pre-teen” child abuse images online.
Because of the severity of the crime, chair of the bench, Keith Barker, transferred the case the crown court for sentencing.
Simpson was given unconditional bail and will appear for sentencing at Teesside Crown Court on a date that is yet to be set.
He was also made subject to notification requirements meaning he must notify the police withing the next three days about his conviction.
NSW Police release photo of man sought in case
of 14yo girl's sexual assault
NSW Police have released an image of a man they believe may be able to assist with their investigation into the sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl who was groomed online.
Police said detectives from the State Crime Command's Child Abuse Squad began an investigation after receiving information the teenager had been sexually assaulted by a man she met online.
The pair began engaging online in early 2015 when the girl was 14 years old.
Police said they met on a number of occasions at an oval in the northern Sydney suburb of Hornsby Heights between February 2015 and January 2016, and had sex.
Child Abuse Squad Commander Acting Superintendent Peter Yeomans said despite extensive inquiries, detectives had not been able to identify the man involved, and had released the image of a man they believed could assist.
"The man is depicted as being of Asian appearance, aged between his mid 20s and mid 30s, having a medium build, with short black hair, brown eyes and clean shaven," he said.
"He may be named or used the name 'Alex', wears glasses and was known to wear business-style clothes.
"I urge members of the community to look closely at the image and if you recognise the man, please contact police."
Warning about meeting strangers met online
Acting Superintendent Yeomans said the case provided a timely reminder for parents to warn their children about online safety.
"Any app, online game, or social media platform that allows the user to be in contact with someone they've only met online, potentially puts them at risk," he said.
"Not only should young people be very careful about providing personal details to a person they only know in the online environment, they should never organise to meet as doing so may place them at further risk of harm."
