A doctor who raped a student nurse after contacting her through a dating app has been jailed for four years.

Manesh Gill, 39, lured the woman to a hotel room in Stirling in December 2018 and attacked her.

A judge at the High Court in Edinburgh told Gill the woman described their encounter as "distressing and frightening".

The married father-of-three, who worked as a GP in Edinburgh, was convicted after a trial earlier this year.

At his sentencing, judge Lord Tyre told Gill: "You have no criminal record and you have clearly been a valued member of the medical profession."

But the judge said he was in "no doubt" that the gravity of the offence could only be marked by a custodial sentence.

He told Gill that he would be placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely.

The court earlier heard that Gill and his victim met after connecting on dating app Tinder.

Gill called himself "Mike" and he "superliked" the young woman's profile, before they spent six weeks messaging each other on Snapchat.

When they met in a hotel, Gill got her to go to his room to use the toilet and poured a "really strong" pink gin and lemonade before she was attacked.

During evidence at Gill's earlier trial, the woman fought back tears as she described how her body "shut down" as she was sexually assaulted.

She told prosecutor Stephanie Ross: "He was on top of me. I was trying to push him off. I couldn't.

"I just felt like my whole body was stuck to the bed. He was having sex with me. I wanted to go home. I felt as if I couldn't move. I couldn't do anything," she said.

'Respected and valued'

She said she told Gill "no" and "stop it" during the attack. She eventually managed to get up and went to the bathroom. She said: "I came out of the bathroom and said 'I know what you've been doing to me'." She left the hotel and contacted police.

Gill, of Corstorphine, in Edinburgh, admitted that he brought a condom, Viagra and a bottle of the woman's favourite drink - pink gin - to the hotel.

But he denied raping the woman, claiming the sex was consensual.

Gill said: "I'm a married man with a professional job and I was meeting women on dates. I didn't want it connected with my job or my wife."

He was unanimously convicted of the sex crime committed when the victim was incapable of giving or withholding consent.

Defence solicitor advocate Iain McSporran said Gill maintained his denial of the offence. He said Gill was "greatly respected and valued" as a GP.

Det Insp Forbes Wilson, of Police Scotland's Public Protection Unit, said: "Gill must now face the consequences for his horrific behaviour.

"The victim has shown tremendous bravery in coming forward. I hope today's outcome will give her some form of closure."

Four arrests in Bradford child sex abuse probe

Published 7 days ago
BBC

Four men have been arrested on suspicion of sexually abusing a child over a period of three years.

The group, aged between 46 and 48, were arrested at addresses in Bradford and Kirklees as part of investigations into child sexual exploitation.

They are accused of offences said to have been committed against a child in Bradford between 1994 and 1997.

West Yorkshire Police said all four had been interviewed and released pending further investigations.

Deputy Chief Inspector Al Weekes said urged anyone who has been a victim of sexual abuse, whether recent or not, to report it to the police.

As is typical of BBC, they are protecting the identities of these men. Is that because the men are all Pakistani Muslims? I would bet on it.

'Incredibly warped' man imprisoned for online child exploitation material

A Nelson, NZ, man who pleaded guilty to knowingly possessing child exploitation material continued to profess his innocence, even as he was taken by guards to prison.

Dale William Cramond, 32, appeared in the Nelson District Court for sentencing on Tuesday. He had pleaded guilty to seven charges of knowingly possessing objectionable publications.

During 2019 and 2020, Cramond imported 116 child sexual abuse images and videos to cloud storage accounts, including Google Drive and Google Photos. The children in the material were aged between one and 12.

Judge Tony Zhorab said Cramond’s conduct suggested an “incredibly warped mind”, as he had downloaded some incredibly serious material that depicted sexualised poses, acts, and bestiality.

China: Nine men arrested after vicious attack on women in a restaurant

Nine people have been arrested in China on suspicion of violently assaulting several women at a restaurant.

Surveillance footage from a barbeque restaurant in Tangshan in northern Hebei province, time-stamped 2.40am on Friday, showed one of the men approaching a table where a party of four women were seated and placing his hand on a woman's back.

She rebuffed him several times before he slapped her, prompting her to fight back, causing a brawl.

A group of men entered the restaurant and attacked the woman and her dining partners, including shoving them to the ground, kicking them and throwing a chair at them.

Footage from outside the restaurant showed the attackers dragging the woman who had rebuffed the man's advances out before she was beaten, with passers-by and others looking on.

Pictures of her lying on a stretcher, with a swollen and bloodied face, as well as the CCTV of the attack sparked widespread outrage online.

All nine suspects were arrested on Saturday, according to a statement by authorities.

Two of the woman sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were receiving hospital treatment.

Their condition was reported as stable and two others were slightly injured.

A Weibo user who was one of the first to post it described it as "heartbreaking", adding: "Does that mean that dining out is so unsafe now, do we have to bring men with us everywhere we go? (These men) are no different from thugs."

By Sunday, the footage had received more than 68 million views and the video of the assault outside had been taken down.

Social media users have condemned the attack and criticised Tangshan police for being slow in arresting the suspects, while the incident also renewed the conversation about the treatment of women in China.

Earlier this year, another viral video showed a woman being chained to a wall in a hut, drawing outcry after officials denied she was a victim of human trafficking.

She was later found to have been sold as a bride.
