A Harvey County jury last week convicted a Newton man of sexually abusing two young girls, starting when they were 7 or 8 years old.
James Everett, 63, was found guilty on Dec. 12 of four counts of rape, two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child and two counts of aggravated criminal sodomy.
He faces the possibility of a life prison sentence with no parole for 25 years and lifetime registration on each count when he is sentenced on Feb. 13.
Harvey County Attorney Heather Figger announced the verdicts in a news release Monday. Jurors reached their decision after hearing testimony from witnesses and law enforcement and listening to other evidence, she said.
According to court records, the girls disclosed the years of repeated sexual abuse when they were 12 and 16 years old.
Everett started molesting the older girl starting when she was 7 years old, telling her that “if she told anyone, he would abuse” the younger girl, too, court records say. She was abused dozens of times over about seven years, according to court records.
The younger girl’s abuse started when she was 8 or 9 years old and lasted for about a year, until she told Everett “his conduct felt ‘weird’ and she wanted it to stop,” court records say.
“This case involved extremely serious and disturbing offenses,” Figger said in the release. “We are grateful to the jury for their careful attention to the evidence and for holding the defendant accountable. We also commend the courage and strength shown by the victims throughout this difficult process.”
