Paedophile facing jail for child sex offences is arrested by police

in Dover after being found hiding in lorry bound for France

A fugitive paedophile was arrested by police in Dover after being found hiding in a lorry bound for France.

Mezbaha Uddin is now facing a long spell in jail after a jury convicted him of a string of child sex offences.

The 39-year-old had been under investigation by Nottinghamshire Police in relation to a series of offences between September 2018 and July 2020.

A jury has now found him guilty of 16 child sex offences including 10 counts of attempting to engage in sexual communications with a child and six counts of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity. 

He is due to be sentenced on October 22. 

Canterbury Crown Court heard that Uddin's arrest followed an allegation of sexual communication with a child in Nottinghamshire in July 2019. Jurors heard that Uddin had communicated with a decoy account set up by an online child activist group.

The group alerted police when he sent indecent images of himself and arranged to meet what he thought was a 14-year-old girl in Mansfield.

Uddin was arrested and his mobile phone was seized. 

Messages from a chatroom website found that Uddin had attempted to engage in sexual communications with more than a dozen underage girls, in some instances with a view to meeting them in person. On other occasions, he encouraged girls to engage in sexual activity while he watched.    

Detective Constable Stuart Dolby, of Nottinghamshire Police's public protection team, welcomed the convictions. 'This was a complex and thorough investigation which included disturbing evidence for our officers to deal with.

'I am pleased with the verdicts and I hope they send a clear message that Nottinghamshire Police will do what is necessary to tackle these crimes and to protect the most vulnerable people in our communities.

'Child sex offences of any kind are taken incredibly seriously and we have a number of tactics in place to catch offenders out. No child should be subjected to any sexual offence and it's our duty to protect them.'

A Florida man was sentenced today to 35 years in prison followed by 10 years of supervised release for enticing and sexually abusing a minor. 

On August 17, 2020, Emilio R. Moran, Jacksonville, pled guilty to the charges.

 

According to court documents and other information presented in court, Moran, 39, enticed a minor into a prolonged sexual relationship while living in Okinawa, Japan. 

Moran, a former U.S. Marine, was working in Okinawa at the time of the crime. Moran used text messages and gifts to entice the minor into the illicit relationship. 

The sexual relationship ended when the parents of the minor discovered it and reported the crime to investigators with the U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations.

Moran was court-martialed on April 19, 2016, in an unrelated case.

For two years beginning in February 2013 and continuing until January 2015, the appellant engaged in an adulterous relationship on and around Camp Foster, Okinawa, Japan, with the wife of a civilian government employee.

During the first year of their affair, the appellant and Mrs. P engaged in sexual relations two or three times per week. Over the last year of the relationship, they engaged in sexual relations weekly, primarily during the appellant’s working hours while he was in uniform.

Moran and Mrs. P’s sexual relationship involved rough sex, choking, anal intercourse, and rape fantasies and regularly occurred inside military buildings, in personal vehicles parked on base, outside Mrs. P’s residence, and in a park off base.

Additionally, on three occasions Mrs. P traveled to Combat Town, near Camp Hansen, to engage in sex with the Moran while he was engaged in-field training.

On one occasion, they engaged in sexual intercourse while the appellant was on duty as the Assistant Regimental Duty Officer (ARDO). On a separate, similar occasion, Moran allowed Mrs. P to use his service-issued duty pistol in a sexual manner:

Moran attempted to insert the pistol into [Mrs. P’s] vagina, but [Mrs. P] told Moran to stop because it was hurting her. Then Moran inserted the pistol into her mouth. [Mrs. P] remembers the taste of metal in her mouth. The pistol was placed on top of the holster while [the appellant and Mrs. P] engag[ed] in sexual intercourse.

This act occurred in her van in the command parking lot while the appellant was present and on duty as ARDO. Throughout their lengthy relationship, both Moran and Mrs. P were married to other people.

During presentencing, the Moran introduced evidence of his prior service, including two Combat Action Ribbons and a Purple Heart received in 2007 for injuries occurring while deployed to Afghanistan. This evidence was also presented to the convening authority for clemency consideration.

 

Assistant Attorney General Kenneth A. Polite Jr. of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division and G. Norman Acker, III, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina made the announcement after sentencing by U.S. District Judge James C. Dever III. The United States Air Force Office of Special Investigations and Homeland Security Investigations investigated the case and U.S. Department of Justice Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section Trial Attorney Charles Schmitz and Assistant U.S. Attorney John Parris prosecuted the case.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice.

Police investigating child sexual abuse claims in Bradford have arrested 19 men.

The offences, which allegedly happened between 2000 and 2005, relate to one girl, detectives say.

The men were arrested at addresses in the Bradford district during a month-long operation, according to West Yorkshire Police.

All 19, aged between 36 and 55, have been interviewed and released pending further enquiries.

Detective Chief Inspector Alan Weekes, of Bradford District Police, said: “This investigation forms part of West Yorkshire Police’s ongoing commitment to the investigation of both current and non-recent sexual offences against children.

“Tackling child abuse and safeguarding children is not something that any one agency can do in isolation though, which is why we work closely with local authorities and other organisations and charities to support victims, bring offenders to justice and make our communities safer.”

He urged anyone who had been a victim of sex abuse to report it to police, insisting they would be “listened to, taken seriously and supported by professionals”.

Man jailed over 'most grotesque' child sexual abuse material

Joshua Alan Bainton has been sentenced to three years’ jail for his collection of “horrific” objectionable material.

A 24-year-old man had thousands of videos and photos depicting sexual abuse, exploitation and torture of children as young as 6 months old – a stash a district court judge described as the most offensive material he had come across in his career.

Joshua Alan Bainton was sentenced on five counts of possession of an objectionable publication in the Christchurch District Court on Wednesday.

The charges are all representative, meaning they represent multiple incidents of a similar offence.

Judge Tom Gilbert described the images and videos found in Bainton’s possession as “the most repellant and grotesque material imaginable”.

“I have been involved in this type of work for about 15 years and I can’t remember ever coming across material as offensive as this, which is saying something,” the judge said.

“It is important to remember that whilst you are just looking at the screen, at the end of the lens is a little kid who is being abused and defiled in the worst way imaginable. This is not a victimless crime.”

While the nature of the material was “horrific”, the judge took into account Bainton’s attempts at rehabilitation since his arrest, the fact he had co-operated with the investigation, and his guilty pleas. The judge said some credit could also be given for Bainton’s young age.

He sentenced Bainton to three years’ imprisonment.

Bainton’s name would also be added to the Child Sex Offender Register.

According to the Department of Internal Affairs’ summary of facts, Bainton created an account on an online cloud storage service on July 5, 2019. He used the account two months later to import a selection of files, including a video containing multiple images stitched together.

All the images were sexually explicit and involved children aged 1-6 years.

Between July 5, 2019, and February 4, 2020, Bainton used the account to save 6644 photos and videos that were classified as objectionable publications, including 6496 depicting child sexual abuse and exploitation.

The material included 165 files showing “extreme” abuse of children aged as young as 1 year.

More than 2000 files showed sexual activity between children and adults.

Bainton closed his account on February 4, 2020, but created another one that he used to access more objectionable material. He closed this account on March 31 but opened another one on May 4 and used it to save 424 objectionable videos and images.

He closed the account the same day.

The man also used a chat application to talk about the objectionable material and to trade files with others. The summary of facts said he spoke with another person about their desire to “touch little kids” on February 11, 2021.

Bainton claimed to have shared the child sexual abuse material with only one person and said that person had initially provided the material to him. The person had threatened him with exposure if he did not make the files available, he said.

Tim Houston, the manager of the Department of Internal Affairs’ digital child exploitation team, said the investigation into Bainton’s activities highlighted the importance of detecting and prosecuting this type of crime.

“Possessing and sharing child sexual exploitation and abuse material perpetuates a horrific cycle of revictimisation. This is not a victimless crime.

“This material depicts a crime scene and the worst moments in a child’s life that has been captured and disseminated across the internet by offenders,” he said.

Former detective turned grooming gang whistleblower Maggie Oliver said that the apologies offered in the lastest review to child rape victims in Bradford are “pointless” and that the scourge of rape gangs persists “everywhere” in the UK.

An independent review into five child grooming cases in Bradford, West Yorkshire since 2001 found that “children suffered abuse no child should have to experience”.

The review repeated the oft-heard refrain from such findings that the Bradford Partnership “fully accepts more needs to be done”.

“We want to apologise to the young people identified in this report and any others where the actions of agencies in Bradford has failed to protect them from child sexual exploitation.”

One of the victims highlighted in the report, referred to as Anna, was placed into the care of foster parents whose son was her abuser.

Anna was then forced into an Islamic wedding with her abuser after becoming pregnant at the age of fifteen, all of which, she claimed, was sanctioned by Bradford authorities.

“While in the ‘care’ of these adults, she was subjected to further sexual abuse and exploitation, domestic abuse, including assaults and coercion and what we would now recognise as domestic slavery,” the report revealed.

Anna said that the agencies “just ignored the abuse”, destroying her childhood.

Anti-abuse campaigner Maggie Oliver, who quit the Greater Manchester Police in 2012 in order to expose the grooming scandal in Rochdale, said of the review: “It’s another apology where they say lessons will be learned and all the rest of it.”

“We’re now 15 years on and as a result of what I learned after resigning, I started the Maggie Oliver Foundation where we help survivors and victims of child abuse every single day,” she told GB News.

“I can tell you that in the last six months,

we are dealing with 31 cases from West Yorkshire, alone.

“Bradford is just another case, this is going on everywhere. What we’re finding in the foundation is that the worst cases that we are aware of are West Yorkshire and in [Greater Manchester]”.

Another victim cited in the latest review, Fiona Goddard — who waived her life-long right to anonymity — said that the Bradford police and council had many opportunities to stop her abuse and “nip it in the bud” but they “never did”.

Goddard, who was the victim of sexual abuse by the 2008 Bradford grooming gangs, said: “I reported it multiple times – physical abuse, sexual abuse or rapes – and they were never followed up on."

In 2019, nine Bradford men, Basharat Khaliq, Saeed Akhtar, Naveed Akhtar, Parvaze Ahmed, Zeeshan Ali, Fahim Iqbal, Izar Hussain, Mohammed Usman and Kieran Harris were convicted of rape and inciting child prostitution against girls as young as fourteen years old starting in 2008.

The jury in the trial heard that local authorities were aware that at least one of the girl victims in the case was “being picked up by multiple Asian males in smart cars”.

One of the victims in the case told the court: “I struggle to leave the house due to anxiety which prevents me from living a full life, and have spent my adult life on medication,” adding that “the drug and alcohol misuse has had a large effect on my health, such as abnormal liver function.”

Maggie Oliver said that the survivors of grooming gangs and other child abuse crimes feel as if they have no one to turn to, saying: “They’re being blamed, they’re being ignored. There are cover-ups and there is a lack of concern.

“These children are in care they are taken away from homes because they are deemed to be at risk. I would argue that they are being put into situations that are even more risky than when they’re in their own home”

“It destroys lives and it’s about time that we did something as a country to address it.”

British paedophile caught sneaking out of the country by RUNNING through the Channel Tunnel is jailed for six months in France

A convicted paedophile from Britain began a six-month prison sentence in France today after being caught running through the Channel Tunnel.

Ryan Murryland, 31, was caught in the undersea link on December 21, causing all trains to be stopped at a cost of some £45,000.

Appearing in court in Boulogne-sur-Mer, northern France, on Monday afternoon, he said he had no memory of what happened, and said he was not guilty.

Funny! How can you declare yourself not-guilty if you have no memory of what happened?

But CCTV images clearly showed Murryland, who is from Manchester, in the Channel Tunnel and being stopped by French police.

'It's not me in the pictures,' Murryland told the court. 'I was arrested by the police in the street after arriving in a car'.

But magistrates refused to believe his claims after hearing that registered sex offenders were not allowed to leave the UK without permission from the police.

The paedophile was formally arrested by French Border Police at the border post in France after he scaled four security fences and dodged 400 surveillance cameras before running in darkness through the tunnel

Murrayland was jailed in 2015 for sexual activity with a child and was on the run last year for breaching the conditions of his bail following his release from prison.

After his arrest in France by border police at Coquelles, Murrayland was held on remand, but his claims were 'full of inconsistencies,' according to a prosecuting report.

He had scaled four security fences and dodged 400 surveillance cameras before running in darkness through the tunnel.

Murrayland was found guilty of two offences – entering a railway without authorisation and refusing to comply with railway regulations - and received the maximum six month sentence.

Maxime Cottigny, his defence barrister, pleaded for his release, saying Murryland had 'not understood why he was placed in police custody.'

Eurotunnel, the Channel Tunnel operator, has warned that anyone trying to walk along the lines could be killed, with risk from both high-speed trains and potentially fatal electrical currents.

It is estimated that the disruption to traffic caused by the Myrrayland incident cost Eurotunnel some £45,000 in lost revenue.

The incident has raised serious questions about border policing following Britain's departure from the EU on January 1.

Tony Smith, former head of UK Border Force, said: 'The Channel Tunnel is a critical part of our national infrastructure. As such the security of the tunnel and of those using it is of paramount importance to both the UK and French governments.

'It is important that both sides conduct an urgent review to determine how this incident was allowed to happen, so as to ensure that criminals and terrorists are denied any opportunity to gain access in future.'

Before Murrayland's sentencing, MP Damian Collins said: 'I'm glad that the trespasser was caught before a nasty accident could happen, although I understand not before causing considerable disruption and loss in revenue to Eurotunnel.

'This is a very rare incident, and I'd like to thank the British and French authorities for dealing with it so swiftly.'

The Channel Tunnel is composed of three tunnels each 31 miles long bored at an average 40m below the sea bed, linking Folkestone to Coquelles in Calais.

Shuttles, Eurostar and freight trains travel at up to 100mph along the Channel Tunnel line and pose an immense danger to anyone walking in the Tunnel.

A Sudanese migrant who walked the length of the Channel Tunnel from France in 2015 was eventually granted asylum in the UK a year later. Abdul Haroun was initially charged with obstructing a railway under 19th-century legislation before also being held in custody.

But the 40-year-old was instead granted asylum, leading to Eurotunnel saying in a statement: 'He not only caused significant disruption to Eurotunnel and to the many freight and passenger customers travelling at the time, he also put his own life and that of others at risk.'

NAIROBI — Some coincidences are impossible to ignore.

Margaret Ruto, a Pennsylvania nurse in her mid-30s, thought she was returning to the rolling green hills of Kenya’s tea-growing region to care for her dying mother-in-law.

Instead, a fluke of fate awaited her: A man who lived just 10 minutes from her home in the United States had opened an orphanage not 10 minutes from her ancestral village in Kenya — and children were saying they had been sexually abused there.

It was the summer of 2018, and she found the village in uproar. Two girls, 12 and 14, had recently escaped and shared horror stories of sexual abuse at the hands of the orphanage director, Gregory Dow.

Ruto was led to a rumpled patch of earth behind the orphanage. Former employees said a 9-month-old boy buried there had died a few years earlier after choking on something while he’d been left unsupervised.

Standing over the grave, she felt dizzy. It was a moment that would divide her life into a before and an after: a transformation from an “ordinary woman” into a detective.

Dow, whom she would spend the next year chasing, had already fled back to Pennsylvania after members of the community confronted him and alerted authorities. Kenyan police say they missed catching him at the airport by just a few hours.

Locals told Ruto they feared that this entitled, white foreigner claiming to be a devout Christian was going to evade justice.

“I was meant to know about this,” she remembered thinking. “And I was meant to do something about it.”

Turmoil lay ahead that Ruto, a dual U.S.-Kenyan citizen, could scarcely have imagined: sleuthing on two continents, constantly looking over her shoulder, working through the trauma of child sex abuse survivors, and sobbing uncontrollably in her car, all while compiling a shocking investigation that would eventually make it into the hands of FBI agents (3rd story on link), splash across the front pages of every Kenyan newspaper and dramatically alter Kenya’s child services policies.

The only hint of her involvement until now has been an official acknowledgment that the FBI was “acting on a tip.”

After agreeing to a plea deal, Gregory Dow, now 61, was sentenced Thursday in a U.S. federal court to 188 months in prison on four counts of “engaging in illicit sexual conduct in foreign places.” Dow will be nearly 80 years old if he makes it to the end of his sentence.

Dow’s plea deal acknowledges guilt on all charges brought against him. His attorneys did not make Dow available to respond to the allegations of deaths at the orphanage, saying only that he had never publicly addressed those claims. A special clause in the U.S. penal code allows for prosecution of child abuse cases committed by Americans overseas.

During the sentencing hearing Thursday, Dow apologized “for the pain that I’ve caused.” Judge Edward G. Smith called him “a missionary from hell.”

Ruto is coming forward with her story because she — and the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office that prosecuted Dow — hope it will inspire similar sleuthing instincts in others.

“Ultimately, Ms. Ruto’s information found its way to a team of dedicated FBI agents, who … gathered the evidence required to charge Dow and hold him accountable for the monstrous abuse he perpetrated on his victims,” William M. McSwain, the U.S. attorney at the time in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, said in a statement to The Washington Post. “This case is a textbook example of the ways in which the public can assist law enforcement in bringing sexual predators like Dow, and other criminals, to justice.”

Separately, Kenyan police exhumed and autopsied the body of the 9-month-old, James Kipkirui, as part of an ongoing investigation into the circumstances of his death, according to Johansen Oduor, the government’s chief forensic pathologist.

Three summers ago, Ruto made a silent, solemn promise that nothing would stop her — not corrupt authorities in Kenya and not sticky-slow bureaucracy in the United States — from pursuing justice for the children at the orphanage.

“I’m just an ordinary woman, a nurse, a mother,” she recalled recently. “I had no idea what I was getting into.”

Kenya has a vast array of missionary-run institutions, including nursing homes, schools and orphanages. Often, impoverished families avoid extra financial burden by sending their children and elderly to live at these charitable institutions.

When the Dow Family Children’s Home opened in 2008, foreigners were not required to submit to background checks. It is possible that no one in Kenya was aware Dow had been a registered sex offender in the United States until 2006.

The Dutch man accused of tormenting and extorting B.C. teenager Amanda Todd online before she killed herself in 2012 was extradited to Canada in December, CBC has learned.

Court officials confirmed Aydin Coban made his first appearance in a B.C. court on Dec. 8, 2020. His lawyer Robert Malewicz confirmed that his client, who he said is eager to clear his name, was flown to Canada in early December. 

Coban was charged in Canada with extortion, criminal harassment, child luring and child pornography in connection with the 15-year-old from Port Coquitlam, B.C.

A spokesperson for the federal Department of Justice said that once Coban's Canadian trial has concluded, he will return home to complete his sentence. If he is convicted of the Canadian charges, that sentence will also be served in the Netherlands.

Todd's death drew international attention after she left behind a poignant YouTube video using flash cards to tell how she sank into depression after she was exploited online.

Coban is accused of sexually blackmailing the teen. He was charged in Canada in 2014, but first had to face criminal proceedings unrelated to Todd's case in his home country.

Coban was convicted and sentenced in 2017 for fraud and blackmail in a series of cyberbullying cases involving young girls and gay men. 

In a statement online last November, Coban said: "The Canadian authorities finally agreed to execute the extradition. I hope to be in Canada in a few days, if not weeks. I'm looking forward to clear my name. I am innocent."

Last year, Coban's lawyer said his client was eager to fight the charges in Canada, but had been stymied by travel document issues.

In a statement on his website in November, Malewicz said, "further delay of the extradition is for him unacceptable, as he also takes into consideration that the family of Amanda Todd and Canadian society have been waiting for a trial."

Malewicz said his client had been fighting to come to Canada since 2018.

"He is looking forward to clear his name and to fight the charges. He's not willing whatsoever to enter a plea agreement or plead guilty," said Malewicz.

Coban's next appearance in court, for a pre-trial conference, is scheduled for Feb. 12 in New Westminster, B.C. He'll remain in custody throughout his time in Canada.

Cricket coach sentenced in Wollongong for grooming young boys

A former New South Wales cricket coach has been sentenced to three years in prison for grooming several teenage boys.

Christopher Cranny thanked Magistrate Claire Girotto and nodded to his father in the public gallery before police escorted him out of Wollongong Local Court today.

The 31-year-old pleaded guilty to 12 charges, including grooming a child for unlawful sexual activity and intentionally performing a sexual act with a child.

Magistrate Girotto said the pattern of offending was the same against each of the boys and occurred between 2015 and 2017 and again in 2019.

"A message must be sent to those who might sexually abuse children," Magistrate Girotto said.

"Their actions won't be tolerated."

To "denounce the conduct" and "protect the community" she handed Cranny a three-year prison sentence with a non-parole period of 14 months.

'Pay the price'

Cranny's crimes involved communicating with his victims through social media, talking to them about sex and, at times, masturbating in front of them.

One of the boys' fathers reported the conduct to police after reading a text message on his son's phone.

In delivering her sentence Magistrate Girotto said she had taken into consideration that Cranny had "deep remorse" for what he had done and that he had offered to explore the option of chemical castration to reduce his "urges" towards young boys.

She explained that Cranny was from a "stable and loving environment", but as a child had been "subjected to some bullying" and was "reclusive". He then developed an attraction to young boys, she said.

Outside the courthouse Cranny's father said his son was relieved to have the matter finalised.

"He realised what he's done and he's going to pay the price," he said. "What my son has done, he's done. To the families, all the best — I hope they can get over it and get on with it."

As if that was an easy thing to do.

Six men are currently taking legal cases against Scouting Ireland over alleged historical child abuse by convicted abuser David O’Brien, who previously told gardaí he had abused up to 40 children as a scout leader.

O’Brien (69) of Benburb Street, Dublin, has been convicted of sexually abusing 10 boys in the 1970s and 1980s. He is currently serving two prison sentences totalling 14 years, with three years suspended.

During an interview with gardaí in 2016, O’Brien estimated he had abused between 30 and 40 children as a scout leader, a court heard.

He was first jailed for 4½ years in October 2015 for sexually abusing six young boys on camping trips in the late 1970s and 1980s. He was jailed for a further 6½ years in 2019 for the abuse of another four boys.

During a sentencing hearing, it emerged one of the victims had made a criminal complaint to gardaí in 1996. O’Brien was interviewed by gardaí in 1997 and said while he did not remember the specific abuse allegation, he did not deny it.

Confronted

He told gardaí at the time of the abuse he was molesting several young boys in the scouts, and had been doing so for 10 years.

He said he had left one scout group after being confronted by a parent, but later joined another group where he continued to abuse children.

Following a Garda investigation a file was submitted to the State solicitor in 1997, but a decision was made not to pursue a prosecution.

I have encountered this statement so many times on this blog and it almost always comes from Ireland. What is wrong is Irish prosecutors? Do they identify more with the paedophiles than the victims?

At a Court of Appeal hearing last week a lawyer for O’Brien said he wanted gardaí to find the rest of his “many victims” so that he could “put an end to all of this”, as he could not remember their names.

Does he think an apology will fix things? He probably has no idea what he has done to those men.

Cases

Two of the civil cases were filed in 2016, one in 2019, two in 2020, and one to date this year. Coleman Legal Partners, who specialise in abuse cases, are representing the plaintiffs in three of the cases.

Scouting Ireland has in recent years been at the centre of a major child sex abuse scandal involving its predecessor bodies, the Catholic Boy Scouts of Ireland and the Scout Association of Ireland.

A report by child protection expert Ian Elliott, published in May 2020, concluded past child abuse had been “tolerated” at the highest levels of the scouting bodies. It found the crimes of known abusers had been covered up to protect the reputation of the movement. Scouting Ireland has identified more than 350 alleged survivors of historic child sex abuse, and 275 alleged perpetrators.

Scouting Ireland previously said about 40 alleged abuse survivors were seeking to take legal cases against the youth organisation over the historic abuse.

Britain continues to throw young British girls under the bus of Political Correctness, or, more accurately, #PCMadness. 

Thousands of girls were horribly abused by Pakistani, Muslim gangs and local police and councils did nothing for fear of looking like racists. Now, the UK government has taken the same stand out of cowardice and callousness to the suffering of thousands of young, white British girls. This is unforgivable.

Two and a half years after being announced by Sajid Javid, research into the “characteristics” of grooming gangs has been published.

The former home secretary spoke about the work several times in 2018, sparking controversy by saying there was a “high proportion of men of Pakistani heritage” in high-profile cases and that there could be “cultural reasons” behind the abuse.

Of course, Mohammed gave clear commands that any girl 'in your right hand', that means under your power, is fair game for anything you want to do with her. This statement was made in response to a question about slaves, or prisoners of war, but has been interpreted as any kafir, ie non-Muslim. Muslims have been doing this for 1400 years, so they are quite astonished when they arrive in western countries and find that their tradition is illegal.

But after his move to the Treasury, the Home Office fell silent and later said the work was “internal”, refusing to release it following a freedom of information request by The Independent in December 2019.

Which, no doubt, was why he was moved to Treasury out of Home Office.

The resulting article sparked a petition signed by more than 130,000 people demanding the release of the research, prompting a government U-turn in May.

But the Home Office paper on “group-based child sexual exploitation” does not contain the answers that many were eagerly awaiting. Instead of providing a much-needed official resource to aid prevention efforts, the report is a catalogue of unknowns.

As a result, different groups are likely to use it to confirm pre-existing beliefs. Far-right groups will continue to blame Muslim men, either by selectively quoting the report or dismissing its findings.

Hours after its release, Britain First declared it a “blatant cover-up”, while Tommy Robinson was posting claims about “predominantly Pakistani Muslim child rape gangs”.

The report concluded that the “existing data would not answer the question of the relationship between ethnicity and child sexual exploitation” (CSE), and that it “was not possible” to say whether certain groups are over-represented among abusers.

I am inclined to believe that the existing data was carefully selected for the sake of obfuscating the whole picture.

The report said that a “number of high-profile cases have mainly involved men of Pakistani ethnicity” and that some research found high numbers of Asian and black grooming gang members.

But it warned of problems with data quality and sample selection, as well as “the potential for bias and inaccuracies”.

The Home Office concluded that it was “most likely” that most grooming gang members are white, but offered little evidence other than data gaps and wider sexual offending trends.

It said the prevalence of grooming gangs was also “difficult to determine” because of under-reporting by victims, and under-recording by police.

Grooming gang members may be convicted of a range of offences, from rape to trafficking and drug supply, and although police introduced a “CSE flag” to draw together related crimes in 2016, it is not consistently used.

The flag is for all CSE, rather than abuse by groups, and – as the report says – “‘grooming gang’ is an ambiguous term that has no official definition”.

“We have found that a lack of clarity around definitions of groups, gangs, and sexual exploitation contribute to inconsistencies in recording,” it added. “There remains confusion amongst practitioners around what constitutes group-based CSE.”

Good grief! What a horrible joke!

Only 32 out of 44 police forces across England, Wales and Scotland responded to a call for a data snapshot in June, and it was “not possible” to exclude different types of CSE such as online grooming from the figures they provided.

The inquiry had Home Office backing, why were there not responses from 44 police forces?

What the report does show is the continuing failure to properly record, analyse and ultimately prevent sexual abuse by grooming gangs in Britain.

While an improved response by police has resulted in dozens of abusers being convicted, the report suggests a case-by-case approach where no agency has taken responsibility for joining the dots.

The Home Office’s paper is the first step towards filling that gap, and the government has promised to further its understanding with a new Tackling Child Sexual Abuse Strategy.

As Rotherham survivor Sammy Woodhouse says, “this is something that is still happening today and will continue to happen in the future”. Victims cannot afford to wait another two-and-a-half years for action.

It was being caught smoking at the age of ten that Hannah says led to seven years of terrifying abuse by a grooming gang - including four relatives.

She says a male cousin told her he caught her on video with a cigarette and warned he would show her Pakistani parents, unless she performed a sex act.

Terrified, the schoolgirl says she did what he asked only to later discover that the attack had also been recorded. She was again threatened with him telling her strict Muslim family about the video if did not comply with more sick demands.

She told how she soon went on to be abused by three other cousins, before their friends and acquaintances also began making sexual demands when they saw her in her home town of Walsall.

Hannah, whose name we have changed to protect her identity, said: "One of them once punched me whilst he was sexually abusing me.

"Sometimes they would whistle to me which was a sign to come over or follow them somewhere private. I used to dread the whistle."

The repeated abuse took place in the backstreets of Walsall, in the famous Arboretum grounds and even the town library.

But the traumatised youngster says she never considered going to police for one reason - her strict Muslim family.

Hannah said: "Any form of sexual intercourse is going to bring shame on your family. Even rape. That's basically your fault in a Muslim person's eye, you've brought that shame upon yourself. But it's not just shame for me, it's shame then for my family."

In total, Hannah claims 18 boys and men raped and sexually abused her over seven years. All, she says, lived in the Walsall area and were known to each other.

Yet she did not even fully realise the horror she had been living through until she fled to the East Midlands at the age of 18 after her father had allegedly tried to force her into marriage.

It took counselling from refuge workers and police to extract the horrifying details of the child sexual exploitation.

Hannah said: "We had been in a session when my support worker just looked at me and said, 'I feel like there's so much to you that you're just not letting out'.

"Everyone was always telling me, 'It's like you're in your own little world, you've got so much in your head that you want to let out'.

"I was sitting there and I couldn't think of anything. Then I thought, 'Oh my God, the blackmail'.

"I ended up talking to her and said that from a young age my cousins were blackmailing me'.. but she listened to what had happened and, 'It wasn't blackmail, it was sexual abuse."

Police were called in and more details of what had happened during her early years emerged - including the alleged abuse of other young girls by the same grooming gang members.

Hannah said: "The abuse happened in the Arboretum Park in Walsall, also in school grounds.

"I didn't drink but I know there's a lot of girls who got plied with vodka and stuff and got raped behind the church by these guys. I saw girls being plied with vodka by these perpetrators.

"I've also had girls messaging me about their abuse by the same group and I passed this onto West Midlands Police in 2015. Girls messaged me back and told me they had been abused.

"There was a place on Birmingham Road and I know that me and another Asian girl were taken there. I gave her name to the police.

"She's now married. I saw her about a year ago at Walsall train station and she looked at me and I looked at her and she smiled, and we basically both just smiled at each other.

"And we just hugged for ages and asked each other if the other was OK. I said, 'I know what was happening to you' and she said, 'I know what was happening to you'.

"She said to me, 'I'm married, I've got kids now'. She's Pakistani as well. She said, 'I can't do anything'.

"We ended up talking on Facebook to one another but she then said she couldn't carry on. And she blocked me. I get it...."

Today, in the final extract from her new book, Sammy reveals how coming to terms with years of abuse led her into a spiral of depression, guilt and thoughts of suicide. Yet worse was to come. 

Despite launching a brave quest to bring her abuser to justice, she was again failed by the police and social services and, in the process, faced losing her children. Here, with remarkable courage, Sammy describes how she successfully battled to expose one of the greatest child protection scandals of modern times.

I’ll never forget the moment. It was the autumn of 2012 and I was standing in a queue at a petrol station when I glanced at the front pages of the newspapers. My stomach dropped to the floor. There, in black and white, were allegations from leaked files suggesting three unnamed Asian brothers were known to have groomed and abused young teenage girls in Rotherham from 1999 to 2001, but had never been prosecuted.

The reports were horrifying – 54 girls had believed that one of these men was her boyfriend. Eighteen thought they were the girlfriend of the ringleader. Sickened, I realised with certainty that the men were my former boyfriend, Arshid ‘Ash’ Hussain, and his brothers Basharat and Bannaras, known as Bash and Bono. It was more than a decade after my relationship with Ash had ended, and here I was, finally confronting the appalling truth of what had happened to me as a 14-year-old schoolgirl.

Our entire relationship raced through my head. We’d drifted apart, wasn’t that the truth of it? When I reached 16, things went wrong. Sixteen. The thought made me feel nauseous. Ash was most interested in me when I was underage. I’d never wanted to listen. I’d put my family through hell fighting to be with him.

I’d always denied being ‘groomed’, whatever that was. The penny finally dropped. At home, I fell to the floor, crying hysterically. I felt like I’d fallen into a black hole I’d never be able to climb out of. I was now 27, and the past 13 years of my life had been a big, fat lie. But if I thought the authorities would help me now, I was sadly mistaken. Even now, as the sordid truth emerged, I had a fight on my hands…

Since my relationship with Ash had ended in 2001, Mum had died suddenly of a brain haemorrhage and I thought about the hell I’d put her through. By early 2013, I was struggling to get out of bed in the mornings. I stopped eating and self-harmed, punishing myself over what I’d done to my family.

Ash had destroyed my life when I was a child and was now destroying it all over again. How I’d been living my life started to make sense. I’d become a topless model and lapdancer so effortlessly, so robotically. Ash had brainwashed me to think it was normal to be treated as nothing more than a sex object. I had no self-respect, no self-esteem. He took those things away from me and left me an empty shell.

I thought my two children – Ash’s son James, by now 11, and Reece, six, born from a subsequent relationship – would be better off without me. But one NHS mental health worker reported me in disgust to social services, claiming it was ‘unacceptable’ to admit I was suicidal in front of my children. Social services said my case wasn’t severe enough. I was passed around every support service in Rotherham, but nobody was geared up to help a grooming victim like me.

Memories from those days made me so angry it hurt. My foster carers and social workers had been adults trained in caring for and protecting children. What if the police had prosecuted Ash the first time I’d got pregnant, or for the girls he abused before me? To make matters worse, Ash – who’d been briefly in touch with James some time previously – kept ringing and messaging. When I called him a paedophile, he threatened to have me killed, but after reporting the threat to police they said the dispute was ‘domestic’ and I should ignore it. They even blamed me for ‘provoking’ him.

I felt abandoned and betrayed by everyone in authority all over again. It felt like nobody was answering my cries for help, and I was too weak and broken to keep on crying. Eventually, I was diagnosed with severe depression and, following a breakdown, began telling my story from the beginning to Nikki, an emergency social worker.

I described Philip and Richard, two older boyfriends I’d had aged 13, before my relationship with Ash. Both had known Ash – Richard had worked for him and his brother, Bash, selling drugs. ‘I think the grooming started earlier than you thought,’ Nikki said carefully. My heart nearly stopped.

‘I think the authorities have failed you,’ she added. ‘I think you were a victim of grooming over many years. It’s time this was handled professionally. You were a victim, but now you are a survivor.’

I wanted Ash to pay for what he’d done; I wanted him jailed so he couldn’t harm anybody else.

Heart pounding, I’d sat down with two officers from South Yorkshire Police, who came to see me at my sisters’ house, but their casual dismissal of my credibility was shocking. They were very laid-back.

One, who’d known me as a teenager, said I’d been Ash’s girlfriend and would never be a reliable witness because of my criminal involvement with Ash’s gang. Evidence from those years – including my dad’s 11-page statement and my teenage diary – had seemingly vanished without a trace. The only thing that remained, they claimed, was a missing person’s report detailing one of my many disappearances.

Even James couldn’t be used as evidence if DNA testing proved he was Ash’s son. They said it was ‘inappropriate’ to tell a boy his age that his father was a suspected paedophile.

I even asked whether police officers could be called on to provide statements about our relationship. But the other officer said: ‘I can’t force them to write something if they say, “I never saw that.” ’

He added: ‘Opinions have changed now. Now we identify that as child abuse. Before they’d see it as sort of a lovesick teenager who keeps going back to this fella.’

I realised there and then that I couldn’t rely on the police to help me. I contacted a solicitor and requested to see my police files before anything else disappeared.

Slowly, I began to piece together the extent of the authorities’ failures, and the network of people who had covered for Ash and his gang. It transpired, of course, that police and social services knew all about him. In 2000 – the year I fell pregnant twice by Ash – the Home Office had commissioned research into child sexual exploitation in various locations, including Rotherham. The report, written in 2001, contains a chapter about Ash as a ‘suspected pimp and drug dealer’ with convictions for wounding, stabbings, assault, affray, robbery, arson, burglary, kidnapping and false imprisonment. Chillingly, I learned I was named as one of ten victims – or ‘child prostitutes’ as we were still called then.

The authorities knew which hotels and takeaways he used, which schools he was sighted outside, and had a long list of taxi firms he was linked to that were also suspected of being involved in the exploitation of children.  

The researcher had been astonished by the scale of abuse and wrote an interim report criticising Rotherham Council and the police for failing to act. When it was sent to the South Yorkshire Chief Constable, the researcher was given a roasting by senior members of Rotherham police. None of her work was ever published. In desperation, I contacted a journalist who was investigating child sexual exploitation. The police panicked, and on the day my story was published in the newspapers I gave my first formal interview to officers.

One asked me: ‘Do you feel guilty, Sam? Because a lot of good professionals are going to lose their jobs.’

I didn’t. The interview became the starting point for Operation Clover, the long-running police investigation into Ash and his associates and other historic child exploitation cases in South Yorkshire. There would be separate interviews about the behaviour of police officers and the criminal activity I’d been involved in while under Ash’s spell.

Lawyers advised me that I risked jail, or even being killed. Every time I heard a knock at the door I was petrified.

I knew what violence Ash was capable of. Two days after the first interview, James said he saw Ash outside in a black car. I called the police, and that’s when I really started to see how things had changed. I was listened to, taken seriously, and given an incident number. The days of being viewed as a stupid little girl who got what she deserved, or a ‘white slag’ who was willingly prostituting herself, had finally ended.

Still, it wasn’t always easy. Social workers from Rotherham Council said speaking out had put my own children at risk of harm, and they put James and Reece on a protection plan – a process which could eventually have seen them taken away from me. They had failed to protect me for years, yet now I was naming and shaming them in the media, they wanted to protect my children. It felt like I was being blackmailed to stop campaigning. I considered stopping, but realised it was the very last thing I should do.

False accusations crept into social services’ reports. One said I’d abandoned my children for two weeks to go to Ibiza; another said I’d allowed James to be part of a drug-dealing gang when he was six. I could prove both were untrue, but I was furious. I knew I was going to get a hard time for speaking out, but this was ridiculous.

It was just a few days later that Rotherham Council was shamed into ordering an independent inquiry into how the sexual exploitation of children had been handled, which caused massive political fallout and resignations when it was published in 2014. The inquiry concluded that thousands of girls may have been abused over 16 years.

But my biggest victory was putting Ash behind bars after giving evidence at his trial in December 2015. He was found guilty of 23 serious child sexual exploitation crimes, including multiple rapes and sexual assaults dating back to 1990. He was jailed for 35 years.

After the verdict, more victims came forward and eventually a further 20 abusers were convicted. It had turned into one of the biggest child-abuse trials this country had ever seen.

I was proud of what I’d achieved. The result gave closure at last. In the end, too, the Crown Prosecution Service rightfully decided not to prosecute me. An astonishing charge of ‘consensual rape’ on my criminal record sheet now no longer appears, although nobody can explain to me how and when it was added or taken off.

My aim now is to campaign to prevent future generations of children from having their lives devastated by sexual exploitation, and to get victims the support and justice they deserve. My abuser stole my childhood, destroyed my mental health and stripped me of the chance of happiness in my 20s.

I suffered from major depression, was left with disengagement and emotional detachment issues, and developed an eating disorder that I only recently defeated.

I lost precious years with my family and friends. I have major trust issues and have never been able to form new friendships. I also lost my education and gained a criminal record. I lost every last shred of my self-esteem, and I almost lost my children. I have been asked many times how I cope now I know the truth. The answer is simple: I have forgiven him. If I don’t move on and look to the future I will always be my abuser’s victim and I am not that vulnerable little child any more.

My life starts now.
