Everyday thousands of children are being sexually abused. You can stop the abuse of at least one child by simply praying. You can possibly stop the abuse of thousands of children by forwarding the link in First Time Visitor? by email, Twitter or Facebook to every Christian you know. Save a child or lots of children!!!! Do Something, please!

3:15 PM prayer in brief:
Pray for God to stop 1 child from being molested today.
Pray for God to stop 1 child molestation happening now.
Pray for God to rescue 1 child from sexual slavery.
Pray for God to save 1 girl from genital circumcision.
Pray for God to stop 1 girl from becoming a child-bride.
If you have the faith pray for 100 children rather than one.

Two Abortions Before the Age of 13 and No-one Charged with Child Sex Abuse

A legal and human rights expert wants to know how a Winnipeg girl could have been twice impregnated by her stepfather and had two abortions before the age of 13 yet not be deemed a victim of sexual assault.

Manitoba Law Courts, Winnipeg
The offences took place in 2011 and 2012, but the crimes only came to light after the accused, now 35 years old, was arrested for assaults against two other victims.

He's since pleaded guilty to multiple counts of sexual assault as well as other charges.

"In my view, if a child presents at a hospital pregnant, there's questions. There's reason for red flags to be raised," said Karen Busby, a University of Manitoba law professor and a director of the university's Centre for Human Rights Research. "Because technically speaking, an offence has occurred."

At the time, her stepfather had sole custody of her and repeatedly sexually assaulted her.

Each time she got pregnant, she had an abortion; once at a Winnipeg hospital and once at a hospital out of province.

Court documents show the girl was instructed to tell medical staff her boyfriend was the father.

According to The Criminal Code of Canada, the age of consent for sexual activity is 16, but Busby said if both partners are younger and both agreed to it, it's unlikely criminal charges would be laid.

She added even if that was her explanation, officials should have investigated it further.

"If two kids end up having sex together, probably neither of them would be charged unless someone was an aggressor," she said. "[But] if it was your boyfriend, it's still a child in need of protection. The question is, 'Is this a child in need of protection?'"

Carol Scurfield is a doctor with the Women's Health Clinic, one of two places in Winnipeg that provides abortions.

The girl did not access her abortion there, but Scurfield said if a girl that young did show up at the clinic in need of an abortion, she would automatically be suspicious.

"In any case, if a 12 year old is pregnant, it raises red flags that a health care provider should be addressing, whether or not there is a child protection issue is one of those," Scurfield said.

A spokesperson for the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority would not comment on this case but said they too contact authorities if they suspect a sexual assault has been committed.

They did not, however, specify whether simply being as young as 12 years old would prompt an investigation.

The accused in this case was arrested in September 2012, after he assaulted another teenage girl and her mother.

A year later, he was charged in connection to the crimes against his stepdaughter.

He pleaded guilty to the offences and is in custody. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Aug. 28.

To Make a 10-year-old Give Birth Isn't Just Horrifying – It's Life Threatening

Would anyone in their right mind think it reasonable that a 10-year-old carry a pregnancy to term? This is not a thought experiment but the horrible story of a real child in Paraguay: raped by her stepfather and now denied an abortion.

According to Amnesty International - which is leading the charge to obtain an abortion for the child - the young girl’s condition became public when she went to the hospital complaining of stomach pain and was found to be 21 weeks pregnant.

“The physical and psychological impact of forcing this young girl to continue with an unwanted pregnancy is tantamount to torture”, Guadalupe Marengo, Americas Deputy Director at Amnesty International said in a statement. (In fact, the United Nations has declared lack of access to abortion at any age a form of torture.)

Paraguay has very strict laws on abortion – the procedure is only permitted when a person’s life is at risk. There are no exceptions for rape or incest.

Antonio Barrios, the Health Minister of Paraguay, said: “there is no indication that the health of the [girl] is at risk ... therefore we are not, from any point of view, in favor of the termination of the pregnancy”.

There are so many levels of horror here it’s hard to know where to begin but this, perhaps, is the most baffling: in what universe is a 10-year-old delivering a child not a risk to her life?

Childbirth is a risky enterprise for a healthy grown woman – a woman of reproductive age in Paraguay for example, has a one in 310 chance of dying from from complications from labor. For a child, the risks are exponentially worse.

Children’s bodies are not meant to give birth. Dr Dalia Brahmi, the Director of Clinical Affairs at Ipas told me: “It is cruel to force a 10-year-old girl to carry her pregnancy to term”.

Dr Brahmi, who once worked at the World Health Organization in the Department of Reproductive Health and Research, told me: “very young adolescents [under 15 years old] have a high risk of eclampsia, infection, preterm birth and intrauterine growth restriction” compared to adult women.

If you have been reading this blog for awhile, you may remember many such cases where 'child'brides' suffered from child-birth, some for the rest of their lives and some by losing their lives.

The dangers are clear – and it takes a whole lot of magical thinking or straight up denial to think otherwise. Pregnancy for a child risks not only her emotional and mental health, but her physical health and possibly even her life.

Paraguay’s decision to remain the course has nothing to do with the actual risk to the child involved, but is all about their adherence to an antiquated, tortuous law that would rather see a child’s life at risk than admit their anti-abortion policies are too strict.

If those who would see this young girl give birth are truly pro-life, whose life are they concerned about? Because it’s certainly not the ten-year-old at the center of this story who is being forced to carry her rapist’s baby to term.

This anonymous young girl - this child - has already been violated by a member of her family. Must she be violated by her country as well?

I think her step-father should have an abortion and have his prostate removed.

I don't have the answer to this ethical/spiritual dilemma. As a Christian, I am concerned about what abortion says to God. Although I often wonder if a pre-born infant going straight to Heaven is such a horrible thing compared to the risk and suffering of a child like this.
