‘Pedophile Playground’: Sexual Predators Targeting Increasing Numbers of Children Online

This is so sick, and, it seems to me, so easily preventable. Every school should have age appropriate education on child sex abuse and online predators should be part of that. Their methods are pretty similar, I think, and so making children aware of those methods should make them far less vulnerable.

The internet is increasingly a “playground” for predatory pedophiles, a charity warns, allowing them to groom children, view pictures, and even direct live sexual abuse online.

Social networks and online gaming communities are leaving an increasing number of children and teens vulnerable to grooming and other forms of online harassment and abuse, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) said.

ChildLine, the NSPCC’s telephone counseling service, conducted more than 3,700, counseling sessions with children and teens worried about online abuse in 2015-2016 — a 24 percent uptick from the previous year.

“Most of us talk to people online and it’s a great way to stay connected and make new friends,” said NSPCC Chief Executive Peter Wanless.

“But it can be a playground for pedophiles, exposing young people to groomers who trawl social networks and online game forums exploiting any vulnerabilities they may find.”

Figures released by the charity reveal that most of the children who contact the counseling helpline are between the ages of 12 and 15, and more than half of them are girls.

The figures for grooming increased 21 percent in the year to March 2016, with one in eight counseling sessions now related to this practice.

ChildLine is launching a new campaign aimed at helping children recognize the signs of grooming and unhealthy relationships both online and offline.

“We hope that by putting this in the spotlight we can help young people to feel able to speak up if they feel worried or scared about a situation or relationship,” Wanless said.

In March, the NSPCC found that cases of recorded child sexual abuse had increased by 30 percent in the previous year, with police chiefs attributing the spike to predators’ increasing use of the internet.

A Georgia mother who performed sex acts during a lewd party with her 16-year-old daughter’s friends and provided them with alcohol and marijuana, has avoided jail.

Details of the April 2015 party hosted by 36-year-old Rachel Lynn Lehnardt for her daughter and her friends were revealed in a police report, filed by Lehnardt’s Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor.

Lehnardt told the sponsor that four of her children were with their father when her oldest daughter asked if she could have friends over “to party.” Lehnardt allegedly replied “Come on, let’s party.”

The report details Lehnardt’s claims that she allowed the teenagers to drink alcohol and smoke marijuana in her home and “divulged that the group of minors and her” played “naked twister” in the living room.

Lenhardt allegedly had sex with an 18-year-old friend of her daughter’s in a bathroom, performed sex acts before the group, and languished in a hot tub before passing out.

Her sponsor said Lehnardt claimed she woke up in her bed while being raped by her daughter’s 16-year-old boyfriend. She filed no sexual assault charges.

Lehnardt was sentenced to 12-months probation and fined $100 for each of six counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Following her arrest last year, Lehnardt issued a statement through her attorney claiming “many of the allegations are exaggerated”, that she was “extremely remorseful” and was “obtaining professional and pastoral counseling to ensure that this conduct is never repeated.”

Lehnardt said she was still a supporter of the Alcoholics Anonymous program and would continue to participate in it.
