Mission mom files civil claim against school district,

says son was sexually abused by five boys

A local (Mission, B.C.) mom has filed a notice of civil claim against the Mission Public School District, saying her nine-year-son was sexually abused by five boys while at school.

The claim, filed Jan. 9 in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver, alleges that the boy – who is in Grade 4 – was assaulted Nov. 1, 2022 on the school grounds.

The Record is not naming the child, his mom or the school in order to protect the boy’s identity.

According to the civil claim, the student reported the incident to school administration, and the five boys allegedly involved in the incident were sent home.

The court documents state that the boy was not sent to a medical facility, and his mom only found out about the incident when she arrived at the end of the school day to pick up her son.

She then reported the incident to the police.

The civil claim states that the principal told the mom that the school was investigating and the children involved would not be allowed to return to school until the investigation was complete.

However, the next day, one of the five students had already returned to class, the documents say.

The claim says the school administration, after learning about the assault, “failed to take the proper steps” to report and investigate the assault.

The school did not immediately notify the Ministry of Children and Family Development, the police, or the student’s parents, the claim states.

It also says the students involved were never disciplined or expelled and were known by staff to have assaulted other students.

The court documents say that the student suffered injuries that included physical pain, injuries to the legs and buttocks, mental anguish, feelings of guilt and shame, and more.

The claim seeks general and special damages; loss of earnings and earning capacity, past, present and future; loss of housekeeping capacity; cost of future care; past and future cost of health care services and more.

None of the allegations in the lawsuit has been proved in court, and the school district has not yet filed a response to the notice of civil claim.

Twitter on Saturday blocked searches for a series of hashtags and keywords used to promote the sale of child sex abuse material (CSAM) following an investigation by NBC News posted the day before. 

NBC News found that a series of hashtags on the platform related to the file-sharing service Mega served as rallying points for users seeking to trade or sell CSAM. NBC News observed the hashtags over a period of several weeks, and counted dozens of users who collectively published hundreds of tweets daily.

The accounts used thinly veiled keywords and terms related to CSAM to promote the content they said was stored on Mega, which they said was available for purchase or trade.

Twitter prohibits any promotion of CSAM on its platform and, since CEO Elon Musk took over the company, he has vocally criticized the company’s former leadership, claiming they didn’t do enough to address child sexual exploitation material on the platform. Musk in November said cleaning up the platform and addressing child exploitation on it was his “priority #1.” 

NBC News’ examination of the hashtags found that some accounts had been using them for months, and that dozens of users had tagged Musk using the hashtags attempting to alert him to the issue. The hashtags, however, appeared to remain largely unmoderated until Saturday.

Following NBC News’ report Friday, Ella Irwin, Twitter’s vice president of product trust and safety, which includes overseeing child safety on the platform, said in an email, “We will do a specific additional review this weekend and see what we find. As you probably know the links you shared relate to a file sharing service broadly used for a wide variety of purposes and so that makes it much harder to find the specific illegal content being posted using the hashtags in question.”

In a follow-up email Saturday, Irwin said she met over the weekend with her team and decided to ban the hashtags, which she said had been under review by the company. 

“We were already reviewing doing this in the coming weeks, given that we have banned other hashtags used commonly for trafficking [CSAM] material already, however, we made the decision to accelerate this action for these terms,” she said.

Three men have appeared in court charged with sexually abusing two girls who lived at a South Yorkshire children's home a decade ago.

Romulad Stefan Houphoet, Absolom Sigiyo, and Jacek Brozozwski were charged as part of Operation Stovewood, an investigation into historic child sex abuse in Rotherham.

They appeared before Sheffield magistrates and were released on bail.

All three are due to appear at Sheffield Crown Court on 6 February.

The National Crime Agency (NCA) said the charges relate to offences alleged to have been committed in 2011 and 2012, when the two victims were aged between 13 and 15 years old and resident in a children's home.

Mr Houphoet, aged 36 and from Burngreave in Sheffield, has been charged with four counts of rape.

Mr Sigiyo, aged 39 and from Catcliffe, Rotherham, has been charged with rape, attempted rape and witness intimidation.

Mr Brozozwski, aged 33 and from Rawmarsh, Rotherham, faces two charges of engaging in sexual activity and inciting sexual activity with a girl aged between 13 and 15.

The trial of 11 people accused of taking part in a child sex ring involving witchcraft, attempted murder and serious sexual violence is estimated to last up to seven weeks, a court has heard.

Seven men and four women are facing a 14-page indictment over alleged crimes said to have happened between January 2010 and March 2020 at various addresses in Glasgow.

Some charges claim the alleged victims, two young girls and a young boy, were forced to kill animals and made to use a ouija board, or similar object, “to call on spirits and demons”.

One of the young girls was said to have been shut in a microwave, a fridge, an oven and a freezer in an attempt to kill her, according to the charges.

There are also claims members of the group “did clap, cheer and verbally encourage” as well as video record the children being sexually abused.

The accused are further alleged to have forced the children to take part in satanic “seances” where they were told they were drinking blood and eating a heart.

Iain Owens, 44, Elaine Lannery, 38, Lesley Williams, 41, Paul Brannan, 40, Marianne Gallagher, 38, Scott Forbes, 49, Barry Watson, 46, Mark Carr, 49, Richard Gachagan, 45, Leona Laing, 50, and John Clark, 46, deny the charges they face.

Maureen Goudie, Steven McHendrie, Robert Brown, James McLean and Douglas Gachagan are also mentioned as being involved in a number of the charges, but court papers said they are now deceased.

At a hearing at the High Court in Glasgow on Friday, Judge Lord Beckett estimated the full trial could  take up to seven weeks, with several of the defence lawyers agreeing this was “realistic”.

The judge told the court: “There are so many people in the case there could be an unusual level of disruption.”

Advocate depute Kath Harper estimated the Crown case alone would last up to three weeks.

At Friday’s hearing – where none of the accused were present – several defence lawyers raised concerns over a video posted on social media in relation to the trial hours before the case was called.

Gary Allan KC described the content as “accusatory” and having “derogatory terms” directed towards the accused, and said it was “potentially prejudicial”.

Brian McConnachie KC told the court: “We need to speak to this person and tell them to stop what they are doing… There will be some future video uploaded.”

Lord Beckett responded to the lawyers’ concerns, saying: “The Crown has the resources to tackle this and I would encourage the Crown to do so.”

The case was continued to the full trial hearing in September.

ELEVEN people are accused of taking part in a child sex ring also allegedly involving witchcraft, serious violence and neglect.

The seven men and four women today faced a 14-page indictment listing 43 different charges during a hearing at the High Court in Glasgow.

The accusations mainly centre around three young children - two girls and a boy - between January 2010 and March 2020 at various addresses in the Townhead, Maryhill and Craigend areas of the city.

They include claims the trio were raped at different times while some of the group did "clap, cheer and verbally encourage" as well as video record what was happening.

One of the young girls was said to have been shut in a microwave during an attempt to kill her.

It also alleged the children were forced to take part in satanic "seances" and made to kill animals.

Iain Owens, 43, Elaine Lannery, 38, Lesley Williams, 40, Paul Brannan, 40, Marianne Gallagher, 37, Scott Forbes, 49, Barry Watson, 46, Mark Carr, 49, Richard Gachagan, 44, Leona Laing, 50, and John Clark, 46, deny the charges they face.

The accusation features a claim they got the young boy to "courier controlled drugs" on their behalf.

It is then said 10 of the group - apart from Forbes - assaulted the elder girl to the danger of her life starting when she was six.

This included running a wheelchair into her legs and also putting a black plastic bag over her head affecting her breathing.

The girl was also allegedly made to eat cat food as well as take drugs and alcohol.

The next charge states Owens, Lannery, Williams, Brannan and Gallagher assaulted the young boy.

It is said he was put in a bath which he was allegedly told was filled with blood.

Owens, Lannery, Williams, Brannan and Clark are then accused of the attempted murder of the younger of the two girls starting when she was just weeks old.

This charge - which runs between December 2015 and June 2019 - states she was made to "act like a dog" and eat pet food. It also said the group did chase the child while wearing a devil mask.

She was also allegedly hung by her jumper from a nail on the wall.

The murder bid charge finally claims the girl was pushed into and trapped inside a microwave, an oven, a fridge freezer and various cupboards.

The next charge claims Owens, Lannery, Williams, Brannan assaulted the other child mentioned in the earlier neglect accusation.Owens and Lannery are then accused of threatening one of the young girls that they had arranged for her to go to Turkey with a male stranger.

Prosecutors state all 11 are said to have got the boy and the older girl to take part in "seances (and) use an Ouija board...to call on spirits and demons".They also allegedly got the children involved in "witchcraft" leading them to believe that they themselves had "metamorphosed into animals".

The 11 are further said to have worn cloaks and devil horns as well making the young boy stab a budgie to death.

The group are also accused of killing a number of dogs including getting the children to attack the animals.

Owens alone then faces a number of charges that he raped the older girl including with Watson, Brannan, Clark and Forbes. Owens and Lannery go on to be accused of a sex abuse charge involving the boy and the younger girl.

A separate allegation states all of the group were then allegedly involved in the rape on various occasions of the older girl. It is claimed they got her to take drink and illicit drugs.

The charge states while she was being sexually assaulted Lannery, Williams, Laing and Gallagher did "clap, cheer and verbally encourage" the alleged crime, which was also video recorded.

The girl was said to be 10 when it started. Forbes alone next faces an indecent images accusation.

Prosecutors further state Gachagan, Laing, Carr, Forbes and Watson allegedly paid for "sexual services" for three of the children.

Two separate charges claim Owens and Lannery did "facilitate" this. There are then a string of accusations detailing further alleged crimes against all three children.

The indictment goes on to state Owens and Lannery took part in the rape of the boy.

All 11 also allegedly abused him with the men this time were said to have "cheered" while it was going on.

The next charge claims Owens and Lannery had sex in front of children.

Owens and Brannan go on to face an accusation of raping the boy.

The duo along with Lannery and Williams are also said to have made him watch a video of one of the girls being attacked. Lannery is then charged with molesting the younger girl before it is claimed she, Owens, Williams and Brannan raped her.

The whole group go on to face the same crime with the girl allegedly held down in a cot.

As this was said to be happening, the women are accused of clapping and cheering while the boy and older girl were shut in a room.

The elder child was also said to have been made to "operate a camera and create video footage" of some of the abuse. Owens and Lannery then face charges of attempting to defeat the ends of justice and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

This includes claims the older girl was threatened and her call to the police was disconnected.

It is also said attempts were made to "pressurise" two of the youngsters around the time of police interviews.

They also allegedly got rid of items to avoid prosecution. The group further face separate drugs charges.

Gachagan is finally accused of lewd behaviour towards another young girl in the mid-1990s in Glasgow's Townhead.Maureen Goudie, Steven McHendrie, Robert Brown, James McLean and Douglas Gachagan are also mentioned as being involved in a number of the charges.

But, the indictment states they are now "deceased".

Owens and Lannery, of Thornliebank, East Renfrewshire, Brannan and Clark, of Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire, Forbes of Townhead, Gallagher and Gachagan, of Maryhill, Watson, of Mount Vernon, all Glasgow deny the charges. Williams, of Lennoxtown, East Dunbartonshire as well as Laing, of Rutherglen, near Glasgow, also pled not guilty.

Carr, of Townhead, did not appear in the dock also pled not guilty through his defence counsel Brian McConnachie QC. Gallagher was excused from the dock during the hearing after taking unwell.

Judge Lord Beckett asked prosecutor Kath Harper about her eight-week trial estimate.

She replied: "It's extremely difficult [to tell] in this case.

"The recorded interviews will take three weeks - eight weeks is an estimate for the trial which I think will be maybe six weeks.”

Lord Beckett set an eight-week trial at the High Court in Glasgow for September next year.

A further hearing was also fixed for October.

SNP council leader resigns after being accused of sexual misconduct

AN SNP council leader has resigned after being accused of sexual misconduct.

Jordan Linden yesterday apologised for his behaviour at a party in 2019 - accepting that he caused “a sense of discomfort”.

Linden was the leader of North Lanarkshire Council whose HQ is in Motherwell.

In a statement, the Nat councillor also cited concerns for his own mental health.

Mr Linden became head of North Lanarkshire council with a £45,000 salary just two months ago.

But, at the weekend, it was revealed that he had been accused of making unwanted sexual advances towards a young activist at a party in Dundee following a gay pride march.

Following publication of the story, the SNP insisted there had been no complaint made about Mr Linden.

However, yesterday the 27-year-old announced he would stand down as North Lanarkshire Council leader - but remain on as a councillor.

In a lengthy statement, Mr Linden said: “Although I have never approached any personal interaction with ill intent, I accept that my behaviour at that party in 2019 caused a sense of discomfort which I entirely regret.

“I offered my apologies to the person concerned at the time and the matter was closed.

“I reiterate that apology today. And in all that’s been said in recent days, the empathetic words from that individual have given me the most reassurance.”

Mr Linden claimed press coverage of the allegations had put “immense strain” on him personally and had “seriously affected” his mental health.

He added: “It has been the privilege of my life to serve in this role, and I remain proud that I was able to lead the Scottish National Party to administration in North Lanarkshire for the first time.

“I intend to continue to represent the people of Bellshill to the very best of my ability as a councillor, as I have done since first being elected in 2017. The privilege of representing my home town continues to be incredibly special to me.”

The allegations against Mr Linden date back to 2019 with claims he groped a teenager while drunk at a party.

That year Mr Linden was due to stand as an MP candidate in the general election. But four days after the alleged incident he announced he would not stand - despite being nominated.

Scottish Tory MSP Annie Wells said: “Jordan Linden’s resignation and apology are at least a partial acknowledgement of the distress he caused and his responsibility for it. That is more than other SNP members have done in similar cases.

"But the issue here was never just about Mr Linden’s misconduct, but about the SNP’s reluctance to deal with serious allegations against senior party figures.”

In 2017, Mr Linden “stepped aside” after a probe into claims of inappropriate conduct at the Scottish Youth Parliament.

Scottish Labour MSP Neil Bibby said: “This resignation was the right thing to do, but it doesn’t fix the rotten culture of secrecy and cover-up at the heart of the SNP.

“His apology makes it all the more appalling that the SNP hierarchy were so willing to close ranks to protect him.

“The SNP cannot keep looking the other way and letting their scandal-hit politicians call the shots.”

Last night a North Lanarkshire council spokesman said: “We can confirm that the chief executive has received a letter from Councillor Jordan Linden resigning his role as leader of the council.

“A new leader will be elected at a meeting of the council to be held in due course.”

The Sick Family Legacy that Lead to the Turpin Family Torture

The brother and sister of Louise Turpin – accused of the horrendous abuse of her 13 children – have revealed their horrific upbringing and how it turned their once-naïve sibling into a cruel, sadistic psychopath.

“You hear people say sometimes the abused can become the abuser. I think that she’s just one of those that it did happen that way,” said Louise’s sister Teresa Robinette.

60 Minutes reporter Liam Bartlett joined Teresa and her brother Billy Lambert as they returned to their hometown of Princeton, West Virginia – or as they refer to it, the birthplace of the cycle of abuse that has forever tormented their family.

“This looked like a happy home on the outside but inside it was miserable,” said Teresa. “This is a house of horrors. This is where it all began.”

Louise and Teresa were repeatedly sexually assaulted by their grandfather, which was condoned and even encouraged by their own mother.

“My mum would take us to him daily,” Teresa revealed.

“There was no escape for us because you weren’t allowed to talk about it, because he had the money and the power. Basically, my mum lived off my grandfather for years.”

“She was pretty much selling us for money to live on.”

Desperate to escape from her grandfather’s abuse, Louise moved to Texas when she was just 16 years old, alongside her much older boyfriend David Turpin.

It was here they began to expand their new family, having eight children in the space of fifteen years.

“We thought she had the perfect life, she had the perfect husband,” Billy told 60 Minutes.

“We thought she was happy.”

From the outside, the Turpins lived a life of wealth and success.

David was a highly paid engineer and would pay for Louise’s family to visit them for holidays every year. But then, in 1998 something shifted in the Turpin household.

Louise and David completely withdrew not only from their family, but also from the outside world.

They were secretly bankrupt which meant an end to the yearly holidays, and in the first of many signs that something sinister was going on, they began to home-school all eight of their children.

“Her excuse to us was the crime rates were always bad or the kids are getting picked on too much and I don’t like them feeling down on themselves,” said Billy.

Ricky and Shelly Vinyard and their two daughters Ashley and Barbara spent a decade living across the gravel road from the Turpins in Rio Vista.

They told Liam Bartlett that even with distance separating them, it was clear there was something disturbing about their new neighbours.

“Ashley would go over there and play, I think that she may have been the only friend that they ever had,” said Shelly.

“All the other kids would make fun of them because they said they smelled bad, they were dirty and had weird haircuts; they wore weird clothes.”

But it wasn’t long before the Vinyards told their children to keep their distance from the Turpins.

“I had come across the kids out there with Ashley and I introduced myself, and then I notice how white her hands were,” said Shelly.

“At first, I thought they were gloves. White gloves and I said, ‘I thought you had gloves on there for a minute!’”

“And she goes, ‘You wash to the wrist or else you’re wasting water.’ And the way she spoke was really strange like she might be a little slow.”

“She was telling you that she’d been told not to wash?,” questioned reporter Liam Bartlett.

“Past the wrist or you were wasting water.”

The children’s horrible existence was almost uncovered when the eldest sibling attempted to run away.

A neighbour picked her up and, due to her extreme malnourishment and lack of education, assumed she was mentally challenged and returned her to her parents.

“After that happened, you started seeing the kids outside again during the daylight and in the evenings and then they’d pull them back in,” Shelly revealed.

“And then after a couple of weeks, they withdrew them again.”

When questioned why they didn’t alerted authorities to the Turpins’ concerning behaviour, the Vineyards replied: “We thought about it but then again, you’re out in the country and you mind your own business and you figure they want their business kept to themselves and you don’t realise what you’re seeing.”

“Evil is deceptive. I mean, it can look good from a surface if you don’t get in there too deep.”

By 2010, David and Louise Turpin’s secret perversions were becoming more obvious in Texas, so they moved across the country to California. They had added another four children to their ever-growing brood.

What they left behind is something the Vineyards say they will never be able to erase from their memory. 

“We walked off into the house, faeces all over the floor.”

“The desks were lined up where they had the little home school. They had the ABCs, the 123s on the walls. They had a giant whiteboard, but the house smelled of funk.”

“All the closets had padlocks. The refrigerators had padlocks. All the cabinets had padlocks. Everything in the house was locked down.”

The Vineyards also discovered unused bikes sitting in the car port that had rotted away.

“It was like mental torture, where you put the toy in front of a child but you can’t play with it.”

The children’s beds had rotted and were covered in ropes and chains used to tie them down.

Dead cats were found throughout the home.

“It was a house of horrors. A true house of horrors. It was right up under our nose and we didn’t see it.”

The Vineyards never reported their horrific discovery, and so David and Louise Turpin went on to not only have another child, but continue to escalate their abuse in Perris, south California.

How do you do that? How do you just go home and forget what horrors those children obviously faced? How did the neighbours, real estate agent, landlord or whoever saw that house not report it to the police? How many years of unnecessary suffering did those children endure because people felt it was more important to mind their own business than to rescue children from torture?

Teresa Robinette says her sister and David had also been pulled into a vortex of new temptations, including partying, gambling and sexual exploits.

“Louise had called me. She just told me that her and David had walked away from the church and they had been looking into other religions. But then eventually they did dabble into witchcraft.”

“I knew they were making some wrong choices but I never in a million years would have thought that it had anything to do with danger to the kids.”

Sin is progressive!

In the early hours of January 14 this year, David and Louise Turpin’s 17-year-old daughter escaped the family home and used a hidden mobile phone to call emergency services.

The state the children were discovered in shocked veteran police officers, legal experts and the wider community.

They were chained to their beds, fed once a day, bathed once a year and had no communication with the outside world.

The Turpin’s 29-year-old weighed just 37 kilograms. The 17-year-old had the IQ of a first grader.

It’s almost hard to believe, but the neighbours living just metres away denied any knowledge of the unfathomable conditions the children were living in.

For brother Billy Lambert that’s something too difficult to accept.

“I’m disappointed at the neighbours,” he told 60 Minutes.

“One said that they were marching in a circle at night-time upstairs and they saw them in the window.”

“To me that seems a little strange right there. I would at least go knock on the door and be like ‘Is everything ok?’”

“There was another neighbour that came forward that said that two of the older boys were digging in the trashcans at night. To me, how is that not a red flag?”

If found guilty, David and Louise Turpin face 94 years in prison for their sick crimes.

But their 13 children, who are currently in the care of the state, have already been dealt life sentences dealing with the psychological and emotional damage created by their wicked parents.
