Elgin, Ill, man who skipped child sex assault
trial gets 47 years in prison
Harry Hitzeman, Daily Herald

An Elgin man who is on the run after skipping court for his child rape trial earlier this year has been sentenced to 47 years in prison.

Mario Piñeda, 37, of the 1-99 block of South DuBois Avenue, was convicted in absentia of seven counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, along with two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse by a Kane County jury on Jan. 16.

At trial, prosecutors presented evidence that Piñeda sexually assaulted the victim, who was younger than 13 and whom he knew, numerous times in 2016.

The girl told her parents about the assaults and her father called police, prosecutors said.

Piñeda faced a top prison term of 217 years. Kane County Judge Charles Petersen on Thursday sentenced Piñeda to 42 years in prison for predatory criminal sexual assault and five years for aggravated sexual abuse, prosecutors said.

The sentences must be served consecutively.

Piñeda posted $20,000 bail after his arrest in 2017 but last came to court for a Sept. 20, 2019, hearing. Petersen issued an arrest warrant for Piñeda after he was a no-show on Jan. 9, 2020.

"This victim has showed so much bravery and strength throughout her ordeal, overcoming her fear to tell her parents about the abuse, providing important details to investigators and telling her story in court," State's Attorney Joe McMahon said. "Mr. Piñeda, on the other hand, was too much of a coward to face her."

Anyone with information on Piñeda's whereabouts is asked to call the Kane County Child Advocacy Center at (630) 208-5160.

Under state law, Piñeda must serve 85% of the 42-year sentence for predatory criminal sexual assault and must register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

Salyersville, Ky, man gets 21 years for illicit overseas sex

By Steve Rogers

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)A Kentucky resident was sentenced in federal court today to 21 years in prison, followed by 20 years of supervised release for being a U.S. citizen who engaged and attempted to engage in illicit sexual conduct with two minor females while he traveled and resided in Cambodia.

According to federal prosecutors, 36-year-old Micky Rife, 36, formerly of Salyersville, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Gregory F. Van Tatenhove.

In his plea agreement, Rife admitted that between Sept. 3, 2012, and Dec. 9, 2018, he traveled in foreign commerce, and between March 7, 2013, and Dec. 9, 2018, he resided in Cambodia, and that during those periods of time, he touched two minor females under their clothing and inside or on their genital areas on more than one occasion, prosecutors said in a release

He further admitted that both minor victims were under the age of 12 when the illicit conduct occurred, according to the release.

Rife was previously indicted for two separate counts of the same offense in February 2019.  He pleaded guilty to a single-count information filed on Jan. 16, 2020.

The investigation was conducted in Cambodia and Kentucky by HSI and the Kentucky State Police.  Trial Attorney Lauren S. Kupersmith of the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS) and Assistant U.S. Attorney David A. Marye prosecuted the case.

Assistant Attorney General Brian A. Benczkowski of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, U.S. Attorney Robert M. Duncan Jr. for the Eastern District of Kentucky, Special Agent in Charge Jerry Templet of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), Nashville, and Kentucky State Police Commissioner Rodney Brewer made the announcement.

According to the Cambodia News, Rife was a former teacher at Hi-Bridge International School in Phnom Penh.

Federal law prohibits an American citizen or resident to travel to a foreign country with intent to engage in any form of sexual conduct with a minor. Rife was arrested in January 2019 after an investigation that began when his former girlfriend, with whom he adopted a child, reported concerns, according to previously released court documents.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.  Led by U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and CEOS, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.  For more information about Project Safe Childhood, please visit www.justice.gov/psc.

By Matthew Enfinger menfinger@aikenstandard.com

An investigation led by multiple agencies resulted in an Aiken man facing five charges connected to distributing child sexual abuse material.

Timothy James Granger, 20, of Aiken was charged with five counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, according to jail records.

Each charge is a felony offense punishable by up to 10 years imprisonment on each count, according to the South Carolina Attorney General's Office.

Investigators received a report from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children which led them to Granger.

Child sexual abuse material, or CSAM, is a more accurate reflection of the material involved in these heinous and abusive crimes, according to a news release from the S.C. Attorney General's Office. "Pornography" can imply the child was a consenting participant. Globally, the term child pornography is being replaced by CSAM for this reason.

Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force investigators with the Aiken Department of Public Safety arrested the suspect Wednesday.

Investigators with the Attorney General's Office, Aiken County Sheriff's Office and United States Secret Service, all also members of the state's ICAC Task Force, assisted with this investigation and arrest.

Idaho Man Pleads Guilty To Attempting To Solicit Sexual Abuse Images Of A 9-y/o Child in Fla.
By Shore News Network

Jacksonville, Florida – United States Attorney Maria Chapa Lopez announced that Aaron Kirk Woolman (58, Hagerman, Idaho) has pleaded guilty to attempting to entice a 9-year-old child to engage in sexual activity and produce pornographic images of herself. Woolman faces a minimum mandatory penalty of 10 years, and up to life, in federal prison. Woolman was arrested by FBI agents at his home in Idaho on December 11, 2019, and transported to Jacksonville, where he remains in custody pending sentencing.

According to court documents, on August 7, 2019, an undercover FBI agent from Jacksonville, posing as a parent of a 9-year-old child, made contact with Woolman in an online chat application. During several chat sessions, Woolman solicited the “parent” to send him pornographic images of the child. Woolman also engaged in conversations via text messaging with an undercover FBI agent posing as the 9-year-old child. During these conversations, Woolman solicited the “child” to engage in sexual activity, produce explicit images of herself, and send these images to Woolman. Woolman tried to convince the “child” to comply with his requests by sending the “child” explicit images of himself and adult pornography.

On December 13, 2019, FBI agents and other law enforcement personnel executed a search warrant at Woolman’s home, where he was arrested. Woolman admitted to communicating with the “dad” and the 9-year-old “girl” for a couple of weeks. He also admitted that he had sent the “girl” a picture of his penis and acknowledged that he had asked the “girl” for a picture of her in the shower, and for other explicit pictures of her.

A search of Woolman’s online cloud storage account revealed several images and videos depicting young children engaged in sexual acts with adults. Woolman’s smart phone also contained child sex abuse images. FBI agents also recovered a loaded handgun in the drawer of Woolman’s nightstand, stored together with a quantity of marijuana, baggies, and a digital scale.

This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (Jacksonville and Boise, Idaho), as well as the Gooding County (Idaho) Sheriff’s Office and the Twin Falls (Idaho) Police Department. It is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney D. Rodney Brown.

It is another case brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
